Welcome to the MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown!

98 ballots were submitted for this countdown, making this the second most ballots ever submitted for a MoFo countdown (the first being the Top 100 All-Time Refresh). I really enjoyed reading your ballots as they came in and I also appreciated the positive reception the Group Watch thread received, especially since this is the first time we ever had one on this forum. Here's hoping that idea catches on for future countdowns.

The Voters: Tugg, Holden Pike, John W Constantine, Steve Freeling, ueno_station54, MovieBuffering, Nope1172, MovieFan1988, LAMb EELYAK, Guaporense, Torgo, Ash TheStrangeOne, mrblond, Kaplan, Allaby, pahaK, Hey Fredrick, Deschain, Thursday Next, Cobpyth, Wigram, Fabulous, The Rodent, seanc, ahwell, Citizen Rules, John Dumbear, Mr. Sunshine, donniedarko, mark f, Daniel M, Harry Lime, ScarletLion, dadgumblah, MovieMeditation, Miss Vicky, rauldc14, matt72582, culliford, Thief, Siddon, xSookieStackhouse, Burning, GulfportDoc, mattiasflgrtll6, urkillinmesmalls, Supercraig, kgaard, CharlesAoup, MovieMad16, mojofilter, Slentert, John McClane, WorldFilmGeek, beelzebubble, PHOENIX74, iluv2viddyfilms, Chypmunk, Kaiju39, John-Connor, crumbsroom, Frightened Inmate No. 2, cricket, Captain Spaulding, Wyldesyde19, KeyserCorleone, Takoma11, thracian dawg, honeykid, CosmicRunaway, aronisred, WHITBISSELL!, Mr Minio, edarsenal, Little Ash, gbgoodies, gandalf26, Iroquois, SpelingError, WrinkledMind, I_Wear_Pants, Sedai, Diehl40, sawduck, Okay, ChunkyMonkey, Loner, jiraffejustin, Austruck, Yoda, ApexPredator, CaptainT, Wooley, TheUsualSuspect, WBadger, Followthrough, sarah f, this_is_the_girl.

816 films were voted for, with many great films making the top 100 while a number of other films unfortunately missed the cut. However, keep in mind that, with so many good/great films from the 2010s, not every film could've made the top 100. Therefore, don't be disappointed if some of the films on your ballots don't make the countdown. Rather, take the opportunity to watch the films you haven't seen and look over the user ballots for recommendation at the end of this countdown.

As usual, while discussion is allowed and more than encouraged in this thread, make sure not to reveal your ballots before the countdown is over.

As many of you are aware, mark f passed away recently, so he sadly won't be joining us for this countdown and all future ones on this forum. While I didn't know him as well and as long as some of you did, I always liked him and found him to be a very interesting poster. His reviews/write-ups were always among the most well-written and insightful contributions to the countdown threads, so this thread obviously won't be the same without him. Fortunately, sarah f found a rough draft of his ballot and submitted it for this countdown. Therefore, mark f's ballot will be included and I'll be sure to list any films on his ballot which make the countdown as they come up. I'll also search the forum to see if I can find some reviews/write-ups he might have as well.

One Pointers

As per tradition, I'll post the films which received only one point for this countdown. This would occur if only one person voted for a film and placed it at the end of their ballot (#25, generally). This time, we had 35 one pointers. Feel free to state whether you voted for one of these films (or you can have us guess as to which one it is).

Revenge (2017)
Microhabitat (2018)

The Burden (2017)
Corn Island (2014)

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

I am so pleased we were able to recover a ballot for Mark, and have him participate in one last countdown. This countdown is, without question, dedicated to his memory and his infectious love of cinema.

When Sarah sent me the ballot, I noticed it had just 24 films on it. He hadn't quite completed it. I invited either his daughter or wife to choose the last film, if they wanted, but Sarah said it was better left as-is. And I think she made the right choice.

It seems fitting that there is one empty spot on Mark's ballot, because there was always one more film to see. And I suspect, had he lived to be 100, that still would have been true.

I almost never play the "one-pointer" game and try to get something obscure or silly listed. Having run a couple of these, it is amazing how often a single point will be the difference in making a title jump up a whole place or even make the list at all. I don't waste that possibility just for the sake of making this first page. Never really understood the appeal, honestly.

The only time I ever succumbed was for the animated countdown when I got Hugo the Hippo a mention. But overall...not my thing.

Enjoy!

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

First time I've made the one-pointers.

Danny Collins is an excellent Al Pacino movie. His more intimate films often seem to get overlooked, which is a shame since he does such a brilliant job in them. Every second of him onscreen here is a joy, and he creates a character who's wasted so much of his life, and feels like he has no idea where to go. But thanks to his charismatic and effortlessly likable performance he convinces us it's never too late to turn your life around for the better, and in turn makes for a film that is equal parts funny, heartwarming and inspiring. I strongly recommend all Pacino fans to give it a watch.

That's how I operate. If I genuinely really like an obscure film and think that #25 is the appropriate spot for it, I'll gladly do that, but I don't go out of my way to try and get one pointers.

John-Connor 12-13-22 02:15 PM

The one-pointers I've seen and liked:

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
21 Jump Street
Iron Man 2

Pretty sure my #25 made the top 100.. it has a lot of beautiful women in it..

Aamis aka Ravening in mine.
It's NOT a Bollywood movie. It's an Assamese (as from the state of Assam - every state has its own movie industry) movie.

It is a beautiful but twisted, romantic movie with melodious music. Highly recommended.

Here's the trailer to tempt people to watch.

Kitbull is mine. One of Pixar's best shorts. It's available on Pixar's official YouTube Channel. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Kitbull (Rosana Sullivan, 2019)
(Rewatch)

When this film first appeared on YouTube, I was a little hesitant to give it a try. Pixar does 2-D hand-drawn animation? I don't know about that. But at only 9 minutes, I didn't exactly have much to lose so I clicked that play button.

Almost immediately, a smile began to spread across my face. The simple designs, soft music, and warm colors quickly swept away any skepticism I had and this adorable tale of the unlikely friendship between a feisty stray kitten and and an abused pitbull charmed the hell out of me. Of course, as any great Pixar film will do, that smile was at times replaced by tears - of both joy and sadness - and by the time those 9 minutes had passed I knew that this would be an enduring favorite for me. As I wiped away my tears I also knew that I needed to watch it again and I clicked that replay button right away. I've lost track of how many times I've watched it since then and I expect I'll watch it many more times in the future.

Of the rest, I've seen Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Burden, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, Gifted, and Death at a Funeral. All good but were never in serious consideration.

CosmicRunaway 12-13-22 02:20 PM

While I did have a one-pointer in mind, I rewatched it this weekend and wanted to place it a couple slots higher. The film I ultimately put in last place was one I originally thought would be around the middle (or even upper portion) of my list, but a recent rewatch knocked it down quite a few pegs. I expect it'll show up somewhere in the bottom half of the Countdown, so I'll talk more about it then.

From the actual one-pointers list I've seen six: Revenge, Resident Evil: Retribution, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Purge: Election Year, 21 Jump Street, and Iron Man 2. Don't really have much to say about them, though 21 Jump Street was a lot better than I expected.

WrinkledMind 12-13-22 02:26 PM

Seen quite a few of those, but really interested to see Nude Nuns with big Guns.
And I am sure Burden belongs to @Takoma11
Lastly, prefer the British original of Death at a Funeral, though the remake isn't bad.

The same here. ;)

In addition, I'd say that probably I'm a single voter for almost all of my #20-25 and anything of my #26-30 would also make the one pointers section here.

Purge election year is mines, just incase the other purge movie that I voted for doesn't make it :D

I've only seen 5 other one pointers on the list

Revenge - Thought it was okay.
Resident Evil Retribution - Thought it was okay
Iron Man 2 - I liked it.
21 Jump Street - I voted for the 2nd one, the chances on making the list may be low lol, but will see anything can happened.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil- I liked it, funny movie too lol

seanc 12-13-22 03:46 PM

Nice to see Teen Beach Movie get some love!

I do play the one pointer game, normally. I didn’t this time though. Seen a handful. Nothing I came close to voting for. Royal Affair was good though. That’s my guess for CR.

Thanks Yoda for making me choke up one more time. Nice thoughts on Mark. Mofo sure misses that guy.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

If I'd thought of it, I might have voted for A Royal Affair and got it knocked off the one pointers. I liked it a lot when I saw it in school and even talked to the director after the screening because I was so impressed. The only other director I talked to in that class was Jeff Nichols because I was becoming a fan of his and I'm realizing I probably should have put Take Shelter or something on my list too. haha I was rushing a bit too much I guess. (The class in question was taught by Leonard Maltin where he did advanced screenings and q&a's with the filmmakers.)

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was my one pointer. While it'd be nice to see it show up on the list proper, at least it gets some visibility on the front page.

Takoma11 12-13-22 05:56 PM

Anyone from the Group Watch thread won't be surprised that The Burden is mine. It just happened to end up in my #25 slot (I ordered my films from the 2010s that I gave 8/9/10 ratings to in order of favorite to least favorite then counted down 25 and chopped off everything under that point).

I really loved Revenge and it was a hard one to cut for me. I'm not surprised that it didn't get much love here, but I think it's one of the most interesting, thrilling horror movies of the last decade.

Dammit. Somebody else voted for my one pointer…

It’s an amazing movie so understandable.

Didn't try a one pointer this time as I found something I hope would make the countdown, sometimes a single point can't change the order quite a bit.

Here are a few questions:

1. What director do you think will be represented the most?

2. What year do you think will appear on this list the most?

3. What film do you think will be at #1? HINT: It's Mall Cop 2

I think the two other one-pointers I've seen are 21 Jump Street & Tucker and Dale vs Evil

21 isn't anything special, but I'm surprised to see T&D only get 1-point. I considered it for my list

1. Its got to be Denis Villeneuve, partly cause he probably made more films than every other director, and they're all ridiculously good.

2. Stab in the dark but I'll go 2010.

3. Probably some overrated Tarantino.

Bliss is my 1-pointer. It's a very good and underseen movie. Here's what I wrote after watching it:

I guess the best way to describe Bliss is a tribute to Abel Ferrara's The Addiction with drug-induced imagery of Mandy or Requiem for a Dream. Dezzy is a painter searching for a way out of her creative block. Booze, sex, and drugs soon escalate to blood and violence. A short and quite intensive film with a nice soundtrack. The lead actress is pretty good too.

It's become a bit of a staple in the UK on the Horror Channel. One of those 2am filler movies they put on at least once a fortnight :D :D

Also, it's worth watching for the sake of being able to say you've seen it.

My #25 didn't make the one pointers though.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

RIP to Mark F. I enjoyed reading his posts on this forum.

Cheatin was an interesting animated film. It wasn't a film that ended up on my list, but if you're a huge fan of Plymptoons, it'd make sense showing up here.

Iron Man 2 might be among the worst Marvel films I've seen. Despite some efforts from recently then comeback actor Mickey Rourke, too much of it was just a less interesting rehash of the first one right down to the similar corporate villain.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil was a fairly good horror comedy (maybe skewering closer to dark comedy than actual horror). A film of obsession and prejudging people before meeting them, not everything clicked. But more often than not, it did.

To the surprise of not many who saw me recommend it on the 2022 List thread, The Retrieval is mine. A Civil War drama about a young boy and his "older brother" who are tasked with catching an escaped slave in the South and what happens when the young man starts to bond with his bounty. Complicating things is that the amount of cash that'll be earned will put him closer to be freed from his servitude to a white bounty hunter and his gang. So will he choose money or principle? Doing the right thing or survival? A fascinating story told with good acting and strong direction from Chris Eska leads to an unforgettable climax.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

I've seen a whoppin' 2 films from the One-Pointers, in addition to mine: Iron Man 2 and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. I had issues with the former, and had a lot of fun with the latter.

As for mine, it was Antes que cante el gallo; a Puerto Rican film I saw earlier this year. Here's the review I wrote here back then...

ANTES QUE CANTE EL GALLO
(2016, Cruz)

https://i.imgur.com/pMbQl2v.png

"The 'rooster is gonna crow' for that girl soon. If she's like that now, I don't know how she'll be when she's a little woman."

The "rooster crowing" is a slang term in Puerto Rico for a girl's first period, the entrance into womanhood and therefore, her sexual awakening. An entirely normal and expected phase, that can be problematic when the environment around the girl is not the best one. That is the case with Carmín (Miranda Purcell) in this wonderful Puerto Rican film.

Antes Que Cante el Gallo, translated as "Before the rooster crows", follows Carmín as she struggles with the above while living with her strict grandmother (Cordelia González). To complicate things, her mother is moving to the US looking for a better job, and her father Rubén (José Eugenio Hernández) has returned home after a prison sentence.

But "before the rooster crows" also has Biblical connotations, specifically to the story of Peter disowning Jesus three times. Carmín has to deal with her own kind of disowning, maybe from her mother who is abandoning her, but also of her father, who can't seem to stay out of trouble. This angle of disowning or betrayal might also extend to Gloria, as both grandmother and granddaughter have to deal with the "betrayal" of Rubén.

Technically speaking, the direction by Ari Manuel Cruz is pretty good and the cinematography by Santiago Marí Benet is impeccable. There are some really good shot compositions along the film, and the overall camera movement is solid. There is also great use of the mountain and country landscapes where the film is set. This, paired with a pretty good production design results in a film that feels real, as opposed to other local films that feel and look like a "fake" Puerto Rico.

But what keeps the film together are the main performances, especially Purcell and Hernández. For a girl so young and with little acting experience, Purcell does an excellent job conveying all the emotional storm inside of Carmín. She's angry, frustrated, sad, confused, wanting, sometimes all at the same time. Meanwhile, Hernández' performance walks a fine line between charm and threat.

The complex relationship between father and daughter, which isn't even fully explored, is one of the most interesting angles of the film. There are certainly some plot points that are left hanging, but in the end, what remains is a story about women learning to move past the abandonment of their loved ones, and growing up to find their own.

Grade:
As far as I know, it's available to watch free on Tubi, so feel free to check it out.

1. I think Denis Villeneuve has a legitimate chance to get all his 6 films in, but at the very least he's getting 4. Scorsese will struggle to get 4, I think, but he will surely get 3.

2. 2017?

3. I agree that Parasite seems to have a certain edge as far as popularity AND "prestige" goes, but who knows.

For the first ever time on one of these countdowns my 1-Pointer has been included on another person's ballot - that makes me equally excited and disappointed. Now I'm going to be hoping it makes the top 100 - but there seems little chance of that. Still, these things are unpredictable!

Out of the 1-Pointers that made it, I've only seen Iron Man 2, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, 21 Jump Street, Death at a Funeral and Danny Collins.

Damn - missing that one-pointer has me in even more anticipation. Get set for a crazy first few entries I reckon...

(I've seen Kitbull too now.)

(and I've seen The Burden as well - I love when people put short films on the 1-pointer part of their ballot.)

Iroquois 12-14-22 12:57 AM

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

Resident Evil: Retribution was my one-pointer. How much I deliberately gamed the one-pointer system is ultimately irrelevant because I always seem to half-ass these lists anyway so it's almost easier to pick one to merit the distinction than it is to fill out the back half of a ballot once I've got the obvious 4.5- or 5-star favourites out of the way and then have to essentially throw darts at which of the countless 4-stars are going to get on the list above all others (choices which I probably wouldn't be satisfied with anyway).

Anyway, Resident Evil: Retribution. As one of the few people on the forum willing to stump for a vulgar auteur like Paul W.S. Anderson, I've grown to enjoy his exercises in adapting the long-running horror game franchise that play fast and loose with any sense of faithfulness to the games' narratives and characters. Instead, he just uses the brand as a blank check with which to put together whatever action-horror spectacles he feels like starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, a wholly original character whose odyssey through a world infested by zombies and mutants has been quite an enjoyable one. Fifth entry Retribution is arguably the jewel in the franchise's crown as it embraces the absurd artifice of the proceedings and the Umbrella Corporation's plans for world domination via undead pandemic, putting Alice in a top-secret facility full of fake cities and pitting her against evil clones of former allies as well as the usual monsters. I definitely understand that this kind of maximalist B-movie approach isn't going to be for everyone (how else could I consider it for one-pointer status) but it represents a specific type of movie that I quite simply enjoy and that means more than countless other allegedly better works.

Danny Collins was on my watchlist for this countdown, but unfortunately I didn't have time to watch it before the deadline. I'm still planning to watch it when I get a chance.

gbgoodies 12-14-22 02:11 AM

Nine Lives (2016) was my 1-pointer. It didn't get good reviews, but I loved it. It's predictable at times, but it's so funny that I didn't care. Kevin Spacey was perfect as a cat named Mr. Fuzzypants, and Christopher Walken stole every scene he was in.

These are the movies that I've seen from the 1-Pointers list:
Cake (2014) - I was very impressed with Jennifer Aniston in this, and I considered this movie for my list.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) - This movie was good, but I thought the first movie was better.
21 Jump Street (2012) - This was a fun movie.
Iron Man 2 (2010) - This was okay, but I thought the other two Iron Man movies were better.
Upside Down (2012) - I love this movie, but unfortunately, it just missed my list.
Kitbull (2019) - I loved the story, but not the animation style.

Both Gifted (2017) and Danny Collins (2015) were on my watchlist, but I ran out of time before the deadline. I'm still planning to watch both of these movies.

My List:

Staggeringly beautiful film about identity and awakening. A stunning example of slow cinema. The first word isn't uttered until the 21st minute. An ethnic Georgian and his granddaughter set up a tiny home on one of the many islands created by the shifting silt of a river. They hope to grow crops and make a living, but external forces interrupt them.

It's possibly a parable for a changing Georgian society and there is something very Tarkovsky about the image composition.

8.7/10

I would have included it somewhere on my ballott anyway. But thought I'd chuck it in at #25 to see if anyone else voted for it.

There are quite a few directors who have made more films than Villeneuve in 2010 - 2020! Whether their films are all better than his is another matter though.

Chypmunk 12-14-22 05:40 AM

Not seen many of the one-pointers, a mere five to be exact.

Tucker And Dale vs Evil was on my long list but ended up not making the cut, The Burden was a surprisingly likeable nom in the 2010s Group Watch thread but wasn't in the running for my ballot as its a short and I choose not to include them, Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows was an ok watch but never under consideration, Revenge has some decent moments of gore but sadly really didn't work for me overall.

And that leaves Gureitofuru deddo [Greatful Dead] which was my #25, an offbeat Japanese tale that probably won't be to most people's taste but I find it an enjoyable watch (the shift into horror in the final third is nice imo) and I was very surprised to find had no ratings for either critic or user on RT when I looked at the films on my ballot over there.

It's possibly a parable for a changing Georgian society and there is something very Tarkovsky about the image composition.

8.7/10

I would have included it somewhere on my ballott anyway. But thought I'd chuck it in at #25 to see if anyone else voted for it.
I'm always looking for new "international" stuff to watch for my challenges, so I'm adding this to my watchlist.

I hope you find a good copy. I don't think it ever got a blu ray release sadly.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

I always try to include a one pointer in my lists, on the condition that it's a film I genuinely love. I think it's a cool way to give a spotlight to a lesser known artist/piece of film. This time I went for Cheatin' (2013) by the great animation director Bill Plympton. There's just something about his weird and highly original style that I absolutely adore. That's why I reserved my #25 for his most recent feature length animation (which he had full control over). I also happen to think it's some of his best work. I'm sure most of you would enjoy it as well. It's unique but also highly accessible cinema. Give it a try!

5 days to predict 100 and 99. I'll have to give it some thought.
