Books or stories that would make a good movie
Several books by Christopher Moore:
Blood Sucking Fiends Coyote Blue A Dirty Job Milan Kundera Unbearable Lightness of Being (focusing on the ideas and not the erotic story) The Joke Immortality Other ideas? Any Genre. |
Re: Books or stories that would make a good movie
The Handmaid's Tale could be a great film, unlike its first adaptation :o
Justine and Juliette by the Marquis De Sade could be excellent films (if you remove all the porn) especially the second one. |

That's what I was implying about the Unbearable Lightness of Being.
In terms of the original movie could be improved on. |
Re: Books or stories that would make a good movie
This recent prison escape in NY has all the makings of a fantastic movie. 2 charismatic, violent criminals, one emotionally raw and wild, one smart and calculating. The desperate middle-aged female prison worker falling in love and helping them out. The shootout and death of the wild con. The solitary cop on the perimeter outskirts who captures the smart one 2 miles from the border. If done right, this could be amazing.

A great series of books that would make a good movie franchise would be the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.. I understand there was some interest in this series but it has been difficult finding actors willing to commit to ten movies.

Dune- Might have to settle for a cable tv series. There is just too much material for even 5-6 movies. That just accounts for Frank Herbert's original stories, not the books his son has produced.

John Irvings books translate well into movies. see The World According to Garp and Cider House Rules to name two. I would like to see a version of A Prayer for Owen Meany that Irving would approve.

Our Moon has Blood clots.
The Dark Arena. |

I'd love to see a movie based on Gene Wolfe's Long Sun books. They leave space for great set design, and their style of world building would translate perfectly.

We've had a tradition in the UK, recently resurrected, of ghost stories for Christmas, broadcast on Christmas Eve. M. R. James' work continues to dominate as far as adaptations go, and while there are still many excellent James stories left, I'd particularly like to see some of A. M. Burrage's stories being made. The easiest ones would probably be Smee and The Sweeper.

The Unquite by Mikaela Everett.
S: For most of her life, Lirael has been training to kill—and replace—a duplicate version of herself on a parallel Earth. She is the perfect sleeper-soldier. But she's beginning to suspect she is not a good person. Read it quite some time ago and thought that it'd make a great movie. |

The Third Policeman, a novel by Brian O'Nolan could be made into a formidable movie. It is a mystery story filled with delirious situations, which culminates in a remarkable plot twist (at least for the 60s, when it was first published). Curiously, the very same idea for the plot twist of this book was also used on a very renowned movie from the 90s. But, unless you feel like reading the book, i wouldnt recommend going around reading stuff about it, or you'll very likely get huge spoilers.
Ranxerox, the Italian underground comics by Tamburini and Liberatore could serve as basis for a very violent cyberpunk movie. It was turned into a video game back in the 90s, i guess, even plans for a movie were made at some point back then, but... |

As much as I agree I don't think Ranxerox could be filmed today. Its sexual content would never get the pass and changing the characters to accommodate the "modern" moral standards would just ruin it.
| Yep, but we always have movies who challenge this standards, anyway. Regarding violence and sex, ive seem movies go way beyond what we see in a Ranxerox story. It doesnt mean the movie will happen, but based on this i wouldnt say it is impossible. |

Re: Books or stories that would make a good movie
For action/thriller, could do a lot worse than the studios looking to adapt some of Matthew Reilly's novels, starting with Ice Station.
We all know the obsession that Hollywood has with franchise potential, and so both the Scarecrow series as well as the Huntsman series are ripe for this, with built in sequels, carried over storylines etc providing loads of potential to work with. At the end of one of his audiobooks there was an interview with Reilly who mentioned that some of his works have been optioned, but to my knowledge none have been officially announced as entering production, and that was a couple of years ago. |
