Not quite my tempo- Whiplash

Hi everyone.. Please, I need your opinions..
I want to buy a watch for someone that really likes the movie Whiplash with Milles Teller and J.K. Simmons. And I want to engrave on its back the phrase "You're quite my tempo".. Like a play on what J.K. Simmons' character keeps repeating on the movie.. You think is a good idea? Will he understand the reference?

Considering how often the "not quite my tempo" line precedes a stream of abuse, I don't think it would be a good idea.

If he gets the reference I don't think it's that awful an idea (you're inverting the phrase thereby also inverting any negative connotations associated with it), but would he get it? None of us can answer that?
Maybe you could buy him a drum-kit and try to snare him that way?

If he doesn't get it it still reads as a compliment, albeit a clunky one. Not too bad.
