I'm getting pretty fed up with the number of DVD's I rent that are scratched all to hell... It seems like they always skip at an important part in the story!

Bunch of savages in this town!!!

I rented Ocean's Eleven once, so a friend of mine could see it. The DVD was scratched up so badly, it wouldn't even load. So I drove down to the local DVD store and bought one of those "DVD Cleaning" kits (the one that looks like some kind of alien pistol).

Anyway, I tried to clean the thing, and in the process made a nice ring of thin scratches all around the diameter of the DVD. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I stuck it back into the player anyway, and guess what happened?

It still didn't play, but even with more scratches than before, it still loaded up. It would have been alright, too, if I preferred my films to play like slideshows.

My local library has a huge selection of titles which I used to take advantage of, but it became to frustrating after awhile. I swear, some of the DVDs looked as if a parent had let their baby chew on 'em. You're right Mose...they're a bunch of savages.

I think some people use them as coasters.

I know my two year old son loves to play with DVD's... Perhaps people are giving them to the rugrats?

I wonder if there's any correlation between the sad state of public restrooms and the scratches on DVD's? What is it with people getting off on treating something that's not theirs like crap when there is small chance of them being caught? As I said, bunch of savages!

I was in a burger joint one day and went to use the toilet. As I sat there, a kid came in to use a urinal. I doubt he knew I was in there, at least I hope not, because he just piised all over the wall and floor. At first I was thinking, "What the hell is that noise?" because I couldn't imagine someone doing that on purpose. By the time I knew for sure what he was doing, he was zipping up and leaving. Man, I wish I wasn't so indisposed at that moment...I'm not sure what I would've done...but I bet it would've made him piss himself.

Okie doke... I couldn't decide where to put it b/c it has something to do with DVD's, but also with my general movie going habits :)

I recently got a dvd in the mail from netflix.com once i opened it up the dvd was completly broken in half, dont know if they sent it that way or if it was broken during handling at the post offices but i had to go online and fill out this form and send it back........

I used to work at a video shop, and the state of dvds that we got back was APPALLING. They'd be scratched to hell, have fingerprints all over them, and I'm not talking small ones, either, and one time, we got back a movie with peanut butter on it. Mostly it's children's or family flicks that get abused, but anything popular enough would be completely unwatchable by the end of the month, really. I haven't a clue what people are doing to them...

you know how many times in just my shift, people come in and say the movie they just rented is all scratched so we have to exchange it? A LOT! in just my one eight hour shift. people get mad at US for it too, like we sit there in front of the drop box and drive razors down random discs. some people damage them on purpose just so they can get an extension, or a free rental. its the pitts!

FYI: if you rent from blockbuster on a regular basis, heres a little tip: when we get dvds back that customers say are "scratched up" we put it back on the shelf once more just in case they were lieing. if another customer complains about that same copy, we take it off the shelf. you can always tell if someone has complained about it before because when you rent it, on the spine there would be a blue dot. its either a sticker or a pen mark. thats a defective sticker. never rent one that has that on it! :)

You keep dvds on the shelf?
Over here their all kept at the back, so you pick up an empty dvd case and give it to the staff who put the dvd in it for you, it cuts down on stealing.

I've always resisted the urge to rent from Blockbuster, but had to finally give in after Movie Gallery bought out the small family stores on my hometown. Now they charge something like $3.45 for a new release and $3 for an old release. The closest Blockbuster is about 30 miles away, fortunately it's right by my office :) I can rent more than 40 DVD's per month for only $25... You just can't argue with that.

I just dont like it how easy CD's get scratched, I wish they would do some thing about it!

I used to have a lot of trouble with scratched DVDs not playing properly. Until, that is, I bought one of these little buggers -

The Philips DVP 520 - It'll play anything I throw at it, has great picture quality, is easy to convert to region free and comes in at under 50 quid.

(UK peeps can also buy them in Tescos when they're getting their oven chips) ;)

we keep our games in the back. but not any of the movies. if only we had a "back" big enough to fit all our thousands upon thousands of dvds! stealing indeed!


at blockbuster you can always sign up for The Movie Pass, which is Unlimited Rentals for $14.99 the first month, then only $19.99/month after that, no due dates, no late fees!

I'm sorry I couldn't fkn resist. Blockbuster may be the devil, but blockbuster money puts the food in my fridge and the, er....toys in my Lucky Charms lunch box.

besides, Wal-mart is a bigger devil. I'll always have that!

I have another theory on this (I have a lot of theories actually :)). I remember as a kid I bought my first two cd's, Weird Al and Kriss Kross. Being a dumb kid I treated them like crap but they've never skipped! We used to play frisbee with them on concrete for heavens sake! It seems like today if you take a cd out of the case wrong it's scratched. I believe this is caused by one of two things, 1.) they are simply using cheaper materials to save $$$ or 2.) they are purposefully making cheaper cd's so they will scratch and people will have to buy them again...

i once got out cabin fever to show it to my mates. i think that movie rocks. anyway we had put it on the dash of my mates ute on the way home. He is a crazy driver and doesnt slow down for corners. so we got the dvd went in to watch it...and it wasnt in its case...it had fallen out of its cover going round a corner and had got scratched to **** on the floor of the ute. i ended up being more angry not seeing it that night than having to pay to replace it. stupid easily scratched dvd's. putting them in the fridge doesnt work either.

when little kids sit behind you in the cinema and kick your chiar!! damnit just thinking aobut it makes me mad!!!

Sorry to say I've just swapped this for a Sony. Nowt wrong with the player itself, just didn't like the noise the tray made.

ok i searched pet peeves...and this thread appeared, so here goes.

I recently picked up a 2 disc "ulttimate collection" of the Fifth Element..so i go to disc 2 and its loaded to the max in featurettes..except there is no option to click play all...and many of the "featurettes" are skimpy at 3 minutes here and there..and well its a pain in the arse.

thats my pet peeve of the day.

....sounds like a movie I saw in college once....:D:D:D

I must be lucky - over the years and years of renting dvds, I've only ever had problems with two. Monsters Inc(from the library) and can not even remember the other one, from an online rental.

Monsters Inc was scratched, and the other was snapped down the middle(probably due to the post/delivery).
