Should there be a MoFo chatroom?
 

I was talking to OG- on AIM today (Monday the 6th of December) and while I was talking to him, I said it's nice talking to other MoFo's on AIM and other IMing software because instead of making a post and waiting for a response, with IMing one another, it's like real-time talking- in other words, a fast response and the you and the person can hold an actual conversation.

So we got to thinkin'...

Why not make an official MoFo's chatroom?

Now before you say it would defeat the purpose of the forums, allow to explain something. H-B-O (or for all of you non-Halo fans out there, Halo.Bungie.org) has both a chatroom and a forum. Even though the chatroom is there for instant talk, their forums are still the main place of discussion. The chatroom to them is like, as I told OG- on AIM, what it is were doing now- just having a normal conversation other than movies, like getting to know each other a little better and stuff. Basically, a chatroom on MoFo would be pretty much a social gathering. So, vote for it, Yoda, think about it, and post your replies about it.

I say yes. But it's highly unlikely, given the language and albeit preditors that can infiltrate a chat room: this being a family-friendly site and all.

A chatroom can still be conventional and family-friendly, good example of such a chatroom is the one available on theonering.net. It takes heavy moderation (the room at TORn can have anywhere from 4 ops to 10), however I think that such a chatroom would be more likely used by the regulars and not some unknown stranger.

i like the idea but we gotta make sure members with status have the ability to block other people that seem to be a bad person or maybe a predator out of the chatroom. I'm not talking about mods because we only have so many of those guys, im talking about members with over 500-1000 posts or some other thing like that. but it sounds like fun.

I agree. IRC's are the best I think.

And an IRC channel could be included into the site as well, so it's not as if people would have to venture to some far, far away place, it would be a simple click away. Great idea!

Well, first download mIRC from www.mIRC.com . It'll ask you to register it, but you don't have to, it'll just keep poping up a please register thing whenever you start it.

After you've installed it and set it up with your name etc, it's been a longggggg time since I've installed mIRC, so I don't even remember what the setup screen looks like anymore, but afterwards (if I remember right) there will be a connect to server screen that you can basically double click etc, I do it manually so all I can tell you is just close that and type into the status window:

/server irc.dejatoons.net

once it connects type: /j MoFo

And there ya have it. My nick is uK|INS[OG-]. I was asleep at the time, but I see that ATG came in last night for a bit, so that's one person other than myself in there :D

Well, since we have the pretty much already created the chatroom, is there anything else that can be done with it or is that it?

I feel that if all is done with it, let's put up a master link somewhere on the site and not particuarly in this thread. Put it somehere like above General Movie Discussion or something like that.

Well if Chris wants to integrate it into the site, he can include an irc java applet somewhere (so people don't actually have to download mIRC), but that's up to him.

Oh, and now there is a trivia bot setup in there. !trivia starts a round of questions and !strivia stops it. gogogogo

There's really no way to link to it. The only thing that can be done in regards to linking to an IRC chatroom is to create a page with a java applet loading the server and the channel. It's all up to Chris if he wants to do that

I can't download anything at work, so it would be of not much use to me unless there's a java deal set up.


The downside of creating a MoFo Chat is that there are always people who can't get the java to load correctly, and wind up feeling left out.

I also think the dowsnside would be less posting on the boards if people are talking it up elsewhere...ya know? People are going to get distracted by what's going on in the chat, they won't be posting as much.

Well, it seems a reasonable concern, but oddly... I post at another board that has both, and people use both. They post when the chat isn't hopping. With a smaller board like this though, it's possible it could slow down the boards... or at least the PMs.

In my experience I can post on forums, chat in a busy chatroom and update my xanga all at once. I think that since the people who will use the chat will most likely be regulars and that they will continue to post. For example, I can hardly see some of the debates that go on between Yoda and Golgot (among others) go on in the chat. It could even come out as a positive if most people just chatted in the chat room, versus chatting on the boards, and instead post more movie stuff on the boards.

In my experience, all goes well, the forums have remained fully active and so did the chatroom. there is still plenty to keep the forum moving, the purpose(in my eyes) of the chatrooms is for members of the forum to truly socialize and be able to hold a real conversation, i've im'd a few other members, and in just a few hours, i've gotten to know them better than all my time at mofo

so are we going to go thru this IRc thingy or actually bring it to mofo?

No one's ever on IRC whenever I log on to the chatroom...

Have we got a chatroom I love chatrooms-only if I go in please don't ignore me.

Don't worry about it- the idea just died. Oh well...
