Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt?

Just have to hear peoples opinion. Sick and tired of hearing this discussion over and over so have to get it over with. :)

ZombIe=LoVeR 10-11-04 08:26 AM

johnny depp by a long shot, was very cool in Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Pirates of the Carribbean

larshjk 10-11-04 09:21 AM

Cant say I agree. And these two movies is honestly not his best. "Edward Scissorhands", and "Gilbert Grape" is two of my favourite Depp-movies. Not saying that Pirates and Once Upon a Time in Mexico was bad;)

Pitt got some awasome movies to refer to. Like: "Snatch", "Oceans Eleven", "Spy Game", "Se7en", "Fight Club" and "12 Monkeys". All of them, very good movies indeed.

chicagofrog 10-11-04 10:16 AM

i'd rather talk to Johnny, though i may fear some arrogance. i'd rather look like Brad (who sez i don't??).

cerebruce 10-11-04 10:30 AM

nobody buy you could have asked such a question.

none of them!

chicagofrog 10-11-04 10:38 AM

look at the avatar! don't ya recognize Brad?

"Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt?"
to whomever would ask me something like that, anyway, I'd say Billy Bob Thornton!

Piddzilla 10-11-04 05:13 PM

Johnny Depp is an actor that seeks new challenges and interesting projects and who is trying to reinvent himself all the time. Pitt wants to be cool. And he is a lot of times, but he is way too limited and shallow as an actor to play in Depp's league. Depp has weaknesses too, but I think he is the more interesting actor out of the two.

chicagofrog 10-12-04 07:56 AM

i thought Pitt only wanted to be cool too before i saw Fight Club and then i heard his comments on the movie too, and really he was far from dumb, or shallow. maybe Depp played another league from the beginning, playing in alternative movies, like Jarmush's etc. which gave him a totally different image.

Piddzilla 10-12-04 02:03 PM

I am not talking about Pitt as a person but about him as an actor. Or really about Pitt as a moviestar. Fight Club is just another example of Pitt being Pitt, imo. Your comment about image I don't quite get. If Depp acts in good movies and does it well, isn't that making him a good or interesting actor rather than just being something that improves his image in some people's eyes? I don't think Pitt has the depth as an actor to do roles like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood or Raoul Duke. Or maybe he (or his agent) sees projects as that as being too risky for his career, something that may harm his image as a sex symbol. I just think that Brad Pitt is more interested in being Brad Pitt than reaching his full potential as an actor. Not saying that he's bad though...

gummo 10-12-04 05:12 PM

I think Pitt plays more interesting roles than Depp. Examples of such performances are; Death in Meet Joe Black; an alter ego in Fight Club. I think Depp adapts to his characters more than Pitt, making for a better performance. I think both are very talented actors, but when it comes to looks...Johnny Depp all the way.

Piddzilla 10-13-04 05:28 AM

I think you're right, Gummo, about Depp adapting to his characters more, and I guess that is why I find him more interesting. And don't get me wrong. The character in Fight Club is interesting and I think Pitt is doing a good job. If it was the first film I ever saw him in I would possibly think he was fantastic. It's just that I get the feeling that it's just Brad Pitt doing the same old Pitt performance.

chicagofrog 10-13-04 07:41 AM

"If Depp acts in good movies and does it well, isn't that making him a good or interesting actor"
hei Pidzilla, i do think too that Depp is a great actor. i especially loved him in Dead Man and appreciated his humor in LA Without a Map (but he definitely was being himself, i think).
how far can an actor distance himself from his personality, for a role? doesn't Pitt use the way he is (that "coolness" for example) just like Depp does? i don't mean the whole of a personality (after all, they don't always play the same characters) but parts of it? so are the differences between both not more based on different personalities rather than acting talent?

Diablo 10-13-04 08:27 AM

Hey... why not pick both Johnny Depp & Brad Pitt?

SpoOkY 10-13-04 08:43 AM

you could pick both but then that would be a draw and we paid for BLOOOD :p

Seriously though I think both have had great performances but Johnny Depp is a bit more versatile in the way he acts, meaning he can perform in a lot of separate roles and do them all well. Brad seems to have been pigeon-holed somehow into the cool tough guy, he just doesn't portray enough emotion to the viewer for him to be as good as Depp. Brad's recent roles seem all too typical whereas Depp's seem interesting and compelling. So at present Depp is the winner for me *fans cheer loudly

chicagofrog 10-13-04 10:13 AM

Even in that pirate flick?

Urban Cowboy 10-13-04 05:05 PM

Brad Pitt is avery good actor, but he's not even on the same level as Depp. Depp's range is almost untouchable. From film to film Depp takes on characters, and makes choices that few actors would, or could, and yet pulls them off flawlessly. Depp's talent is one that must be charished, because it is so rare. Pitt vs, Depp is as lopsided as a one legged man in an asskicking competition.

Piddzilla 10-13-04 05:21 PM

I don't know, especially when it comes to body language I think Pitt has a few things up his sleeve that he uses in most his films. I don't know how far it is possible to distance oneself from one's personality, but it seems like Depp is at least trying harder than Pitt (in my opinion).

 :rotfl:  haven't heard that one before but that's a little too onesided. Look at Meeting Joe Black, Fight Club and Oceans Eleven, I mean he did a pretty good job I thought, so maybe not that lopsided for me. Depp's still better of course I'm not Disputing that. :)

Actually Sedai, she would give YOUR leg for Johnny's ass...she'd need hers for what she has in store for Mr.Depp!! :D

2wrongs 11-30-04 04:49 PM

I'd choose Brad.

Depp's body has nothing on Brad Pitt's cuts and ripples; like a washboard.

kenny 12-01-04 12:04 AM

JOHNNY DEPP. in any movie!
he is the best actor in the world !!.(in my opinion.)
total cameleon, he can become any character and be believable, interesting, quaint..there aint no words for how good he is >.<
and just great cool person.

but bitt..hmm i liked him in 7 years in Tibet. and Snatch.
he is good but not even half good as Johnny.well noone else is....

Definitely The Deppster.

IMO, Brad Pitt is only as good as the director he's working with on any given film. He can be wonderful in a film like "Kalifornia" or "Snatch", but then he can turn around and portray Death as a dewey-eyed innocent in a film like "Meet Joe Black". He has ability, but he needs someone to help bring out his talent.

Depp is good even when the director and film are lousy.

Exactly!
He can be Johnny Depp as drug-addled pirate, or Johnny Depp as gorgeous guy who's very introverted, or Johnny Depp as... well, I guess it's really just mainly slight variations on those roles.

So just like a chameleon, if a green spot that looks like a lizard is what that chameleon needs to blend in to.

He's a caricature at best. Not that Pitt's especially Olivier himself.

7thson 12-02-04 12:50 AM

Have they both been in the same movie before? What a wonderful Idea....I will wait..........(Jepordy Music)...........................................................................................

..Well actually I would pick Val Kimer over both, but hey, I will be your Huckleberry....;) .

I've known a couple of people who know him and they all say Depp is a great guy. Not at all arrogant.

I'd pick him, for whatever it is we're choosing. He's funnier.

allthatglitters 12-02-04 01:56 AM

Depp, has to be Depp. Deppspite (haha) the fact that he is very good looking, he happens to be one of my favorite actors. I am waiting to go see Finding Neverland once I am on break.

I don't have anything againts Pitt, I just like Depp alot better.

I don't know why no1s gone for brad, he is so mch hotter than depp, but johnny was good is the secret window, im sorry depp fans, but my heart is and always will be with the one and only BRAD PITT

Blister 12-04-04 10:43 AM

I remember hearing a similar argument in Family Guy.

Anyway, I prefer Depp as an actor, he picks tasteful characters and always manages to pull them off.

Pitt, I can't really say much about, because I don't really like him as an actor or person.

Mophead 12-06-04 10:32 PM

Brad Pitt, Fight Club and Troy where great.

Erratic Behavior 12-07-04 12:10 AM

Johnny Depp is the superior actor.

Depp is one of the best actors of this generation.

ash_is_the_gal 12-09-04 04:51 AM

I used to think Brat Pitt was all looks and no talent, but after watching pretty much all of his movies, I was dead wrong. He gives amazing performances, and at least doesn't do Romantic Comedy after Romantic Comedy. Ugggh.

Urban Cowboy 12-09-04 11:52 AM

You just stated the reason nobody went for Pitt. It's not a beauty compitition, not that it can hurt to look good. In terms of acting talent Depp is just way better.

A better question would have been Sean Penn or Depp, those are two actors at the top of their respective games.

Sounds like a great idea! I'd love to see them together in a movie. They would probably compliment each other very well. The dark sexy brooding, mysterious one who can also be quirkly and playful when he wants to be...and the blond, sexy athletic type who also seems like the all-around nice/open guy who can also play brooding or playful when he wants.

Hmmm....I'll wait with you 7thson. :D

Marie 12-23-04 09:11 PM

Are we talking about hotness-wise? Because if we are, neither. One looks like a girl and the other looks like a....girl....wait I'm confusing myself....

Godsend 12-23-04 10:29 PM

Depp > Pitt, by a long shot.

Go take any Depp movie and shove it into the DVD player and play it. Watch it, take it out, and shove in another. Continue this cycle for awhile and you'll notice he is never the same person in his movies. He doesn't look the same, he doesn't even give off the same resembelance. Hell, his voice isn't even the same in every movie.

So you might say "well that's what actings all about, acting like someone." It's great you've come to that conclusion, but you also need to come to the conclusion that Depp potrays every character like he's lived that life since his first breath. As for Pitt, he can adapt but he'll always still carry the same attitude in most of his movies, such as Fight Club towards Oceans 11 towards Snatch and so forth.

Honestly I can't even recognize Depp usually for the first 15 minutes of the movie. He has more talent then any actor I've ever come across, and that's a lot. He's a very profound person, and that, I accept, as a fact.

Cheetara The Thundercat 01-24-05 12:54 PM

Acting ability: Johnny Depp wins ...

Don't get me wrong... I enjoyed Brad Pitt in movies like Troy...Seven Years in Tibet...Interview With A Vampire...etc... I feel that Johnny gets more into his characters. He's not just trying to look good in front of the cameras.

I love both actors but I have to say...Johnny wins...

AboveTheClouds 01-24-05 01:58 PM

For me i'll "pitt" one of my favorite movies containing each Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp

Brad Pitt - Fight Club. It's funny, action packed and at the end it's some what of a mindfvck.

Johnny Depp - Edward Scissor Hands. It's well scripted, well acted and it certainly has it's funny moments. But the deeper side to the story had me mesmerized..

In short..

Johnny Depp wins by far.

moviedvdfreak 01-27-05 06:27 AM

:furiousdevil:
ok depp is awesome, pirates, neverland, once upon a time in mexico, gilbert grape, brasco

but come on brads got, snatch, fight club,se7en,true romance under his belt

i think its pretty hard to decide

i got to say overall i enjoyed brads movies more, especially those i mentioned above

okay, tis yr opinion, but you didn't really make a point as far as the comparison between those 2 movies is concerned.
i'd apply just as well "well scripted", "well acted" (i'd put "wonderfully") and especially "deeper side of the story (...) mesmerized" to Fight Club. that movie is about today's society and its main problems, concerning each one of us in the industrialized, modern, media-obsessed countries, and it offers hours, days and months of reflection alone or conversation among friends... without even getting finished with the unfathomable riches of it.
so, if Depp wins, it won't be cuz Edward is better than Fight Club, since it is not. (i usually wouldn't compare these 2 movies, like, don't ask me if i prefer pizza to coffee, Bergman to Altman, or Batman to Lucifer)

Johnny Depp ****s on Brad Pitt as an actor.

And that's not saying Pitt is a poor actor.

libralucilla 02-09-05 02:57 AM

Do I have to choose between Johnny and Brad??

Johnny-in Pirates, in mexico.......or Brad-in Troy, in Ocean's????

I will choose.......BOTH!! Both of these men with me to dinner,
movie, and under the sheets!! Sexy Men!

hazii82 02-09-05 03:06 AM

love both but i would have to go with Johnny

Pirates of the Caribbean
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
The Astronaut's Wife
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Sleepy Hollow
Edward Scissorhands
Blow
etc.....etc.....etc

smh yes yes yes JOHNNY DEPP

libralucilla 02-09-05 03:12 AM

Now why wouldn't you want Brad as well??

Stickyshoez 03-02-05 02:25 AM

They should just fight....winner will be declared the all time best actor!!! Now you may think Brad has the upper hand from his role in "Fight Club" but you may be surprised at how much damage a man with scissorhands can accumulate.

sixthson 03-03-05 03:11 AM

Depp
In "Dead Man" he acts much much better than Pitt in every role of him (yet I like Pitt as well)
And he'd never make such a mistake as participating in "Meet Joe Black"

yeah, dep seeks new challenges by starring in every other Tim Burton film. because, you know, Burtons movies are all soooo different.

just because you can play a "quirky" character doesn't mean you're overly talented.

and plus, im really getting sick and tired of people thinking that actors that star in artsy fartsy "meaningful" films are automatically the superior. i like a lot of movies such as that (edward scissorhands, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, etc) but i don't find them, the directors, the actors, or the writer who thought it up, any more superior. Fight Club, for example, you may think Pitt was "just trying to be cool" but this was a movie that made some really good points. and Snatch, Oceans Eleven, Seven Years in Tibet, are also great examples of Pitt's awesomeness. :)

JackRabbitSlim 03-04-05 12:59 AM

Pitt man especially when David Fincher is directing. Fight Club and Seven are awesome.

LordSlaytan 03-04-05 01:13 AM

I believe these two guys are worlds apart when it comes to pure skill with their craft, but they are both very gifted, charismatic, and immensely likeable.

Johnny Depp...he's too cool for school!
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have collaborated for five films (Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), two of which none of us has had any chance to see yet. Not all of them have been all that great, so I don’t base my judgment because of their work together. Still…my favorite performance by Depp was in Ed Wood.

Piddy is right: Depp has continuously shown a deep desire to constantly challenge himself by taking roles that are completely different from any other role he’s done previously, and he’s done them well. Very well.

Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, Ed Wood, Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Finding Neverland, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: No other roles like those in his repertoire. Yeah, he’s made some stinkers, not too many who do this job haven’t, but he constantly finds new ways to reinvent how we perceive him. He’s not afraid to try new things, no matter how difficult they are.

Brad Pitt...what a dream!
Brad Pitt has done that to some extent, but not as much that I can see.

Kalifornia, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club, and Snatch are the only real departures from his regular romantic/tough guy roles…and all these roles have one thing in common: They’re all really the same guy. They’re all emotionally unstable, hair trigger, and dangerous men.

So, if I had to choose which one of these two guys have shown their true depth, I’d choose Depp. If I had to choose which one I actually like more; I couldn’t. I like them both a LOT! They are both cool as hell. If I had to choose, based on their individual bodies of work, which was the more competent actor, it would be Johnny…hands down.

Anyway…they BOTH rock!

When it comes down to it Johnny Depp is the more versatile actor of the two and to me that means he is the better actor.

Of course Brad Pitt is the hottest of the two. ;)

Godsend 04-29-05 02:20 PM

New Question

What are their best roles?

Pitt just knocked everyone out in Snatch. I mean his character seemed so real. If I had watched that movie without seeing any of his others, I'd be fooled to think he was actually a gypsy with acting skills.

For Depp, it's a bit harder. Ugh. There's James from Finding Neverland, George from Blow, and Donnie/Joe from Donnie Brasco. You know what, I pick James Matthew Barrie from Finding Neverland.

AngieQ 04-29-05 04:24 PM

Brad Pitt - Liked him since day one. But Johnny follows very closely. I think we have seen him get better and better with each film through the years which is cool!

Aniko 05-21-05 12:24 AM

Caity, I just saw Johnny's bio on A&E's Biography and thought of you for some strange reason. :modest: ;)
A&E did a really nice job. Have you seen it?

And to keep this on topic....Depp.

Would pick Depp, but I admire Pitt as an actor, he is under-rated!!! Has anyone seen Depp's directorial debut "The Brave", he can direct as well, would imagine he might eventually be more behind the camera like Clint is nowadays. Pirates is my fave Depp movie, but he is good in everything he does.

Also, In FINDING NEVERLAND we get him in a role Pitt could play, not as good as depp, but Pitt could never be able to pull out the crazy writer from secret window. Never the less Pitt has his high points, him and DiCaprio are to actors I thught I hated and that they were gay until i realized that they actually could perform very very well.

Depp is Hands Down the best actor nowadays

A&E did a really nice job. Have you seen it?

Now I wonder why you thought of me... :p :D But no, I only caught the very end of it and have been hoping they will air it again soon...

Oh, and I have to go with DEPP in answer to the thread question...

Austruck 06-05-05 10:18 PM

Tough one. I think Depp's been a more consistently good and versatile actor for a longer period of time ("21 Jump Street," anyone? ;) ). Loved him in Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood (what is it with him and guys named Ed?), Secret Window (loved him in that), Pirates (of course), and Gilbert Grape. Such very different characters.

But then I think of Pitt in 12 Monkeys, and Se7en, and Ocean's Eleven and Fight Club, and I think he's a close second. In 12 Monkeys, particularly, he was spot-on for the part and makes the movie exponentially more interesting than if he weren't there.

On a personal level, I'd probably like Pitt better than Depp (Depp's anti-American sentiments are a real turnoff for me), but acting ... Depp edges out Pitt so far.

I have to go with Johnny on this one, although lately i have been experiecing a lot of Brad Pitt in my life :) ut old crushes are hard to forget!! So Johnny is better if you ask me, both as looks and when it comes to acting. Just my opinion

Carlito Brigante 08-31-05 05:29 AM

they are both quite talented actors i think, especially in

twelve monkeys-brad pitt
pirates of the caribbian-jonny depp

X Randeath X 10-19-05 11:55 AM

I'm picking Pitt simply because of his performance in Kalifornia (his best role). It was amazing.

But then again, Depp has been in some classics, like Ed Wood.

And **** Pirates of the Carribean. Any real film fan who loves that movie has no idea what they're talking about.

babibleueyes 10-19-05 11:33 PM

yo yo

Johnny depp is sooo much hotter then brad pitt....no comparison!....brad pitt looks like he got hit one too many times in the head with a really big ugly stick!!! ...neways write back and tell me wut u think. blondie out!

My girlfriend told me this, "Johnny Depp is a better actor and gives better sex but Bradd Pitt is better looking."

And, Honest to God, it's all her words, except for the sex bit, that's my input ;) .

Hot damn… X Ratditch X is here to instruct me on whether or not I am a true film fan or if I even know what in the hell I am talking about…. :skeptical:

So, which one of you actually had sex with Pitt and Depp... 'cause it's the only way one could judge such a thing...

So speaketh the authority on what makes a real film fan.
Surely a film fan is someone who loves movies, personally, I hate rom-coms, but that doesn't mean I would be condescending towards someone who loves them.
I really liked Pirates of the Carribean, and Johhny Depp is one of my favourite actors, but I guess thev 650 DVDs I have in my collection and the various film courses I have under my belt are now null and void.
Thank you for allowing me to see the light O great one.
( word of advice, drop the attitude and the view from your high horse, this forum is all about movies, and anyone posting here is here because of their love of movies, and everyone has a right to their opinion, even if you personally disagree with it! )
Here endeth the lesson.

X Randeath X 10-20-05 11:59 AM

Yeah, that was arrogant on my part. Sorry. I just have a strong hatred for that movie. I thought it was a borefest beyond belief. Lame and dull.

Darth Stujitzu 10-20-05 12:10 PM

Each to their own, as stated, it's all about opinions, you'll soon find out whos opinions you agree with more, I've had some great reccomendations from this forum, and I value a lot of the regulars opinions.
I'm always on the lookout for films I might have missed or not heard of.
Stick around, there's plenty of opinions on this forum, but compared to other forums there isn't a hierarchy element to it.

You mean cultural stereotypes can't judge a person?

Ahhh shucks :(

The Watcher 10-21-05 02:43 PM

I think that Johnny Depp is definately the better actor, he play quirky very well but can also be serious like in that 'not-to-great' Ninth Gate movie. Brad Pitt did well in Meet Joe Black and in Fight Club-but the scripts in both of those movies were good.

chirpy_sabz 10-21-05 03:25 PM

I think Depp is a better actor...he has done a wide range of roles.

coolbreeze 10-21-05 05:42 PM

On a purely sexist and shallow level, I love Johnny Depp.

On an acting level, Depp again. He is versitile, as has been mentioned here. There have been many performances where he seemed to change the way he looked simply by way of his acting.
Impressive.

frankybme 10-21-05 08:46 PM

I think they are both very smart and cool acters. But if i have to give Depp the edge in acting abilty only becouse of such a diverse catolog of movies he has been. Now if it was up to me, i would much rather see a brad movie by far. His movies are not a masterpiece but they are fun to see and he plays pretty cool parts. Ex: oceans eleven

ObiWanShinobi 10-22-05 11:45 AM

One thing that is cool about both is that they are both "stars" yet they don't go for star roles such as Christian Bale or Tom Cruise or that moron Vin Diesel.

Some are pure star power, yes, but mostly they are interesting and complex characters in movies that are oftentimes supporting.

They both deserve credit.

But Johnny Depp transforms himself, he was Edward Scissorhands, he was Captain Jack Sparrow, he was Ed Wood.

Brad Pitt is a great actor, but I will always see Brad Pitt up on screen.

scoobie-doobie 12-07-05 05:50 PM

Johnny Depp is a much more complete actor. He is capable of pulling off a wide array of parts. From Capt. Jack Sparrow to the psycho thriller lead in Secret Window, to the Charlie Chaplin Character in Benny & Joon. He is able to do justice to about any type of character.

alley-kat1991 12-21-05 01:30 AM

I just love Johnny Depp and my mom is a big Johnny Depp fan as well so she started me on 21 Jump Street, Benny & Joon, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Edward Scissorshands, before I got to check him out in the theatres on my own in Pirates Of The Caribbean, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. I would have to vote for Johnny Depp because I have seen more of his films and liked him in all the roles.
