Top Drug Movies
Im new so dont kill me if this has allready been posted on but...
At the end of this summer ill be becoming an NYU film student :) and last week i was on the phone with my dorm mate..clearing stuff up and we got onto the topic of Drug related movies... My favorite move of all time (trainspotting) obviously is a Drug movie as well as a few others of my top picks..but this discussion just totally reamped my lust for drug movies. Anyone else fascinated by them or have a favorite? some of mine... 1. Trainspotting 2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 3. Requeum for a Dream 4. Permenent Midnight ...just a few (please no one say traffic haha) |
|
|
I can't say I'm fascinated by them. Many serious drug films disturb me deeply, so much so that I can't stomach watching my number two pick any more. Marijuana comedies on the other hand I like, but are extremly over done. But here you go...
1. Goodfellas - Some may think this is a bit of a stretch, but it's really not. 2. Requium for a Dream - The final 15 min. are the most difficult I've ever sat thru. 3. Trainspotting - "Choose Life" 4. Half Baked - "You in here for some marijuana?" 5. Saving Grace - Cute, uplitfing, and funny all in one. |
Trainspotting
Requiem for a Dream Traffic Withnail and I |
Blow
Halfbaked Trainspotting Fear and Loathing |
Stoner Comedy
Friday How High Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Half Baked Any Cheech & Chong movie |
1. Trainspotting
2. Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas 3. Maria Full of Grace 4. Requiem For A Dream Well, basically everything already said. |
Half Baked
Blow Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Friday Scarface |
In no particular order:
Trainspotting Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas Requiem For A Dream |
Trainspotting
Blow Traffic Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke |
I'm also going to add Dazed and Confused.. Because it is borderline... and just a good film.
|
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
In the Movie Depp was heating a light blub with a lighter, does that get you high or something? |
I doubt it.
|
Requiem For A Dream
Trainspotting |

Dazed and Confused is a fun movie... I love the soundtrack... :D |
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
In the Movie Depp was heating a light blub with a lighter, does that get you high or something? that is mehtod used to smoke crack |
I am also adding Late night sessions to my list.. it's a very shakily filmed movie about the exploits of a group of friends who are all stoners and part of the rave scene. It's actually really good.. the charactors are sometimes 2D.. so beware of that

man with the golden arm
the lost weekend basketball diaries '54 |
Because no one has said it, how's about:
Naked Lunch. |

"They go around looking younger for a few days. Then they need more." Easily Matt Dillon's best performance. Who I really liked was character actor James Remar as Gentry. |
Is it just me or does Depp look high through out the whole movie of Pirates of the Carribean? I would say so...add that to your list.
peace |
I'm flabbergasted that the Roger Corman helmed, Jack Nicholson penned, Fonda/Hopper classic THE TRIP wasn't number one on everyone's lists.
http://www.lycos.de/inc/content/ente...x/big/3043.jpg 'Cause it's a Lovely Sort of Death, people. |
Pretty much any movie with Sean William Scott in it.
But my picks would be the two top best movies of all time - "Dude, Where's My Car" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back." |
You've forgotten about RUSH, which was one of the originals of this kind of movie, I think.
Dazed is awesome. "What did you say back there man? You said...someones tokin' some reefer" "Well don't worry about it man, it was just an observation." "Just an observation eh? Well who the #*#( are you? Issac F#@*ing Newton?" |
panic in needle park
|
Scarface - Shows how, while drugs can lead to money, power, and respect, it can also ruin the lives of people.
Requiem for a Dream - Shows how drugs can lead people to do very nasty things just for another fix. |
Blow is the best drug movie....
|
Meh.
|
DRUGSTORE COWBOY
THE LOST WEEKEND MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES http://www.nkino.com/movie/2155/p.gif |
Fear and Loathing is probably my fave, Traffic had some interesting points and morals, but i was disappointed by the actual movie.
|
Not sure if it qualifies as a drug movie, but City of God would be my pick.
|
Oh, Fo Sho
City of God is def. a drug movie. It's also pretty darned good I wrekun'. Shooting litle kids isn't cool though, especially in their big toe.
Another, The Salton Sea. Not very good, more interesting. Fear & Loathing... It's just my opinion, that that movie has the reputaiton that it does because it's wierd. It's slugs through two different stories while trying to tie them together. Hunter Thompson deserved a better movie. Trainspotting, its aight' I guess. You've got your stereotyped heroine addicts, and good visuals. It's a fun watch, except for the baby. I never liked badies that could defy the laws of gravity. I don't like drugs as a theme though, so you can roll past this one. Should have wrote this at the beginning... my bad. |
1. Trainspotting
2. Permanent Midnight *3. Traffic i cant think of any other ones i've seen that didn't suck. *oh yeah i forgot traffic. |
Traffic all the way!
And then Trainspotting. |
"Trainspotting, its aight' I guess. You've got your stereotyped heroine addicts, and good visuals. It's a fun watch, except for the baby. I never liked badies that could defy the laws of gravity."
Yea trainspotting is not about the "stereotypical" heroin junkie...not at all. trust not even close. its a purely subjective look at drug usuage nothing is a sterotype |
Drug Cinema
I am a fan of drug movies and I must say my top are...
Spun Requiem for a Dream Blow Fear and loathing (and yes) Goodfellas Scarface Empire and some other but I'm to high to think of them |
Blow
Requiem for a Dream Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas |
Must admit i've never seen blow, but it seems to glamorise the concepts of drug taking and dealing. Trainspotting is a favourite of mine be because it does not hollywoodise drugs and make them seem cool (I'm only talking about hard drugs here, we've all smoked a little dope ;) ) like scarface does for example. Traffic is probably the ultimate message against drugs and converts this in a powerful and in-depth way that I found made great cinema.
|
Rent Blow, no buy it. It is easy to thik from the trailers for the movie that it glamorises it but trust me that is not the case. Turns into a sad story and that is all I will say. Great preformances by Depp and Pee Wee, give it a chance and you will see it doesn't glamorise drugs.
|
Ok, maybe I will, my cousin's got it I'll give it a go. I do think Depp is underrated as a serious actor. Pee Wee? Explain.

I think Trainspotting was a great drug related film. I think it should be shown in health class for highschoolers... |
Rjoepenk, sorry about Pee Wee, should have been more clear, thanks Holden. I also did forget to mention that it is based on a true story which I think makes it more interesting.
|
I've seen some movies mentioned that are more movies I'd want to watch while on drugs. And no movie is quite as good when on drugs as The Big Lebowski is. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is almost as painful to watch while high as it is while stone cold sober.
But, as far as movies that are drug-related, I find the genre as a whole to be very uneven. Anyway, I enjoyed Naked Lunch... and perhaps a few others. And yes, I have an odd adoration for Fear and Loathing as well. |

Requiem for a Dream
Jacob's Ladder Blue Sunshine |
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Kids Trainspotting |
My favorites are:
Drugstore Cowboy-By far Matt Dillon's Best Performance Basketball Diaries-1st Leo DiCaprio great leading performance Less Than Zero-Just an O.K. Movie, but Robert Downey Jr. was great |
Formula 51
Fear Loathing in Vegas Half Baked |
Refer Madness is my all time favourite! That pot can drive you craaaaazy!! :goof: :goof:
* Even though it was 'about' drugs, I didn't think there was much of a back plot or explanation in Blow. Too much on the relationship with his folks than the moving, selling and dealing the stuff - which was the really good stuff in the book. Just my opinion of course. |
The Devil's Playground - A Documentary about some Amish punk-ass that goes out of the community to experience life and some meth. Good times.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - A movie about drugs, the legal kind that people can force you take. Kind of scary, ya' know? Atleast people have to make the decision to shoot up heroin, unless you're a crack baby. Babies born into an environment with drugs is not somethign to laugh about. This is DaShiz being serious. |

Trainspotting is one of the worst movies ive ever seen. It's just not funny to have poo flung over peoples faces. I'm a teenage boy and it might be funny in concept, but in graphic imagery, thats just f ucking annoying. Look, this isnt making any sense. But someone prove why its a decent movie.

How and why haven't you seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Jack N. rocks the role and the head nurse is crazy [crazy in a good way]. I think the nurse lady character was ranked as one of the top movie villians. Read about it on Amazon.com. It's one of my all time favorite movies, so of course I'm gonna' say buy it. |
City of God- great movie
Traffic- great movie Up in Smoke- enjoyable stoner comedy Friday- enjoyable stoner comedy Gridlock'd- pretty good movie about junkies trying to quit |
Ok, in my small experience in films concerning drugs:

I like 2:
Traffic Blow Both movies have that scary element that really makes you look at what drugs can do to you and how bad they can f you up. |
Rush with Jennifer Jason Leigh
|
Don't know that I've ever seen Rush...I'll make a note
|
American Pie... cuz they must've been on drugs when they made it.
|
|
I love the film Spun, its like a fun version of Requiem For A Dream, which is also a great piece of drug cinema.
|
Scarface and Fear & Loathing
|
This is great!
Oh my god. I just saw "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" This movie is(can we cuss???) oh well this movie was F#cking Great! And just remember "As your attorney, I advise you to take a hit from the little brown bottle in my shaving kit. "

I need help with a quote. What movie is this quote from?
"I suppose they pulled the gold spoon out of my mouth, and sent me here to see how the rest of you 11-Boozers live!!!" |

|
''Scarface'', ''Trainspotting'', and ''Nil By Mouth''
|
Half Baked
|
Scarface
|
obviously, requiem is the only acceptable choice for drug movies. the best. simply put.
|
Traffic
Half Baked |
Top 5 best drug movies of all time
1-Requiem For A Dream 2-FeaR AND Loathing 3-Half Baked 4-Pulp Fiction 5-Alice In Wonder Land |
Fear and Loathing
Naked Lunch was very obscure and bizzare also and one movie i'm forgetting the name of it called Coneticut something or other |
Scarface is the most popular one I could think of. And I love that movie some say it's over rated but I like it. Has a good solid story.
|
I've seen most but not all of the movies that have been mentioned in this thread. And a common lesson running through all of them is that: If one experiments with drugs, one ruins one's life.
Is there a movie where someone takes drugs and it improves his/her life? |
Any Cheech & Chong movie. :p
|
There are so many drug films that it's awfully hard to choose. Many of the usual suspects (that vary greatly in quality) have been named, like Requiem For a Dream (excellent), Blow(mediocre), and Scarface(bad). So, Kong figured he'd pick his one of his favorite drug films that hasn't been mentioned yet. And it is....

andy warhol's movies
clockwork orange basquiat traffic hey, does anyone wanna make a hyped up movie about beer like that new one, B(E) (which I had last nite and loved...) |
Withnail & I
http://www.gustavholmberg.com/tomrum...withnail01.jpg Camberwell Carrots, pills, booze, Meths, lighter fluid and dead fish. The Daddy. ;) |
|
1. The Basketball Diaries
2. Less Than Zero 3. Traffic 4. Permanent Midnight 5. Sid and Nancy |
OOOH, Less Than Zero. forgot about that.
I thought someboday was on something when I saw "heathers". and somebody definitely was when they did the new Amityville.... |
I generally keep away from drug related movies they always seem really dark and bitter. yet Human Traffic is one of my favourite movies ever. its soo funny and the soundtrack is awesome. i like the fact also that the characters are all normal people with boring jobs and boring lives.
