the greatest horror film ever made

What do you think was the greatest horror film ever made

Pyro Tramp 07-20-04 08:54 AM

Night of the Living Dead

mott hamble 07-20-04 10:32 AM

I'm not sure if this can be classified as a "horror" film, but Fire in the Sky scared the crap out of me! I hate aliens..

Holden Pike 07-20-04 12:11 PM

Rosemary's Baby (1968 - Polanski), with The Shining (1980 - Kubrick) just behind it.

http://www.dvdreview.com/fullreviews...arysBaby10.jpg
"What have you done to his eyes, you MANIACS?!?!"

Shaolin 07-20-04 01:20 PM

I second Rosemary's Baby.

James_Sparrow 07-20-04 05:09 PM

I've actually never seen Rosemary's Baby yet. Thats one I may pick up next time I go.

Eyes 07-20-04 06:12 PM

What about Jaws, that was scary as hell to anyone who saw it, today it's pretty dull cause everyone knows everything about the movie, but if it just came to the theatres, people would get scared

Black Mamba 07-20-04 08:17 PM

Id say The Shining. Very well done, and so very creepy.

James_Sparrow 07-20-04 08:42 PM

I couldn't really chose since I've never really been scared from a film. I was raise on horror films throughout my childhood. I think I started at like 5 with "The Shining." Ever since then I yet to see a film that will scare me or raise the hairs on the back of my neck. If anyone has any suggestions i'd be glad to hear em.

I fought Jason and Freddy 07-20-04 11:51 PM

ethier Freddy Vs. Jason or Halloween 4

Eyes 07-21-04 01:14 AM

not scary to a buff, if anything, then Gothika was pretty good, so was that new Angelina Jolie Movie, where she has some sort of gift for murders, and the murderer keeps stealing his victims' identities

mott hamble 07-22-04 10:59 AM

I don't know, anything with Hillary Duff is terrifying!

Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD 07-22-04 02:00 PM

This is a pretty tough question.

Putting my favorite horror movies aside, I'd say Night of the Living Dead is the absolute greatest in terms of innovation.

Pyro Tramp 07-22-04 02:59 PM

I really enjoyed Rosemarys Baby but the ending lost all the suggestions of paranoia. I thought it was great that you didnt know if they had the baby, i think it shoulda ended after she finds the secret door so you were left to think about the whole film, instead the amazing and massive build up of tension is lead (to what i thought) an un-satisfactory ending.

Shaolin 07-22-04 05:54 PM

Use the spoilers tag please!!!

FallsAngel 07-22-04 06:41 PM

Greatest

Okay. The greatest horror movie EVER made is THE EVIL DEAD. Mainly because it is so raw and visually stunning. It achieves shock value and campiness. It introduced us to the now legendary actor Bruce Cambell and the directing talents of Sam Raimi. It was shot on a low budget and still manages to have plenty of effects that would be done with computer today. It captured my imagination the very first time I saw it. The colors are dazzling and the set is great. The movie is amazing. A truely timless piece of cinematic magic.

mack 07-22-04 10:46 PM

Since I like scifi, Id have to say Event Horizon. I know, I know, there is no excuse, but that movie scared the beejesus out of me, and I wasnt even a child.

Eyes 07-23-04 06:24 PM

Taking Lives, that's what it was called

Sinny McGuffins 07-23-04 06:37 PM

The greatest horror film is probably The Shining.

But my favorites are Evil Dead II and Dawn of the Dead.

leeched 07-23-04 08:31 PM

I going to have to go with most other people in this thread and vote for The Shining.

Rosemary's Baby has dated too much to be considered the greatest horror film of all time.

Eyes 07-29-04 10:57 AM

unfortunately, i haven't had a chance to rent this movie, or read the book

Krackalackin 07-31-04 04:20 PM

Yeah

I got a lot of favorites but the horror movie I personally think is the best ever is probably the original Dawn of the Dead. Night of the living dead new and old were good but there's so much more to Dawn. I was tempted to say The Shinning but I don't think the atmosphere is disturbing enough. Most parts are to a degree lighthearted. A really great horror movie, no question but I think Dawn's atmosphere of doom worked really well. The Evil Dead's really stand out too, especially the first one but the plot wasn't that new and the movie dragged at the end. It was still great though ofcourse! The Second Evil Dead which I love to no end isn't a solid horror movie but just a great movie. So, Personally I think Dawn of the Dead is.

Eyes 07-31-04 04:35 PM

Army of Darkness is on l8r today, on the scifi channel

The Shining? I highly recommend that one... We had a discussion about whether or not there were hidden meanings in Kubrick's version HERE if anyone is interested... course we got off topic a bit... :D ... but it was an interesting discussion…

Tazz 07-31-04 05:19 PM

I heard people say shining was scary when i watched it. It wasnt scary at all. i was laughing when the wife was screaming all over the house. and how stupid she was when jack sticked his head through the door. i would have stabbed his face in. But i do admit she was too scared and Terrified to do it and that her husband has gone crazy and wants to bash her brains in. i would like to know what was the reason for that bear and that guy in the bedroom at first i thought they were gay but im not sure anymore.

But i did like the Shining overall but it wasnt scary

mack 08-01-04 12:40 AM

The Shinining had several themes, but then, most of SK's movies do. :p I agree that it wasnt scary at all. The newer miniseries version (2002 or 2003, I think) was more ominous, up to date, and in-your-face with the hidden judgments, but I think I prefered the Jack Nicholson version. Far less blatant violence/malevolence, but somehow more subtly sinister.

Eyes 08-01-04 01:55 AM

i also prefered Nicholson, he seemed to capture the character better

BigDov 08-01-04 08:36 AM

What about The Exorcist? Pretty scary, if a bit dated.

Same for Poltergeist and Don't Look Now, although that's probably more creepy than scary

Eyes 08-01-04 03:51 PM

yeah, it's a fine line

AboveTheClouds 08-01-04 07:05 PM

I never found the Exorcist to be a horror, more of a comedy*ducks*.But here are a few of my favorites

The Shining(One of Kubricks best works)
Army of Darkness
Night of the Living dead
Friday the 13th(whole series)
Nightmare on elm street(Whole series)
Nosferatu
The Omen
The gate
Sleepy Hollow(Depp was great in this)
From Hell(Another good Depp film)
The ninth gate(Another good Depp Film)
Dracula
Halloween(series)
Evil dead 1&2

Eyes 08-01-04 08:55 PM

all the evil deads were just as much a comedy as Exorsist

AboveTheClouds 08-01-04 08:56 PM

Yeah but at least they had a cooler atmosphere, and better plot.

Eyes 08-01-04 08:59 PM

to be honest, i've never seen the exorcist

AboveTheClouds 08-01-04 09:51 PM

It's really really funny.

ameri_fan 08-03-04 01:51 PM

Movie

The best horror movies ever are definitely from the Halloween series. I think that the original Halloween along with Halloween 4 are the 2 best horror movies of all time. I also really liked The Ring

getaclue2009 08-04-04 12:52 AM

scary movie

Man, the scariest movie I've seen (so far) has been The Ring. I've seen it a million times and it still freaks me out. But I haven't really even seen a lot of horror movies BECAUSE they freak me out so much. But I was talked into this one. So it's the one for me!

The Taxi Driver 08-04-04 04:36 AM

im just love halloween so i have to say that. then either the shining or the original Texas chainsaw massacre

V for Vendetta 08-04-04 09:47 AM

forrest gump is some scary stuff, retards with machine guns, but i suppose thats the point of the film, was there a point to furrest gump, im too scared to watch it again

Sedai 08-04-04 10:19 AM

Making fun of retarded people is cool....Oh wait, no it isn't. Also, It's Forrest, not Furrest.

When you ask a question, I think you are supposed to use one of these to designate it: ?

Uh oh, I think your bus is leaving....

i actually though that 6 was better than 4 and 5, but 5 was probably the scariest, but among all movies, i'd have to say that the Shining gets the most praise for being the scariest, although i haven't had the privelige of seeing it, but after that, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake would have to be the scariest imho

Autumn2099 08-05-04 06:01 PM

Favs

I really don't have one favorite horror flick but i can name a couple.

The dead series (Night,Dawn,Day)

The excorcist is really creepy

The first Nightmare on Elm Street

First couple of Friday the 13ths

Evil Dead

It-that movie is creepy as well.

AngieQ 08-05-04 06:29 PM

Poltergeist...

thankyoucomeagain 08-05-04 06:51 PM

I would have to say that Se7en was the scariest for me but he upcoming films :The Grudge and Exorsist The Beggining lokkin hella scary

Eyes 08-05-04 07:15 PM

se7en wasn't really scary

Nitzer 08-06-04 01:47 AM

shining wasn't scary at all. well i mean yeah that one part where you see the old granny naked *shivers* it kind of sucked actually i think. way over rated. ive never seen polergeist and everyone says its so scary, i was at the video store the other and i wanted to get it but when i looked at the back it had a PG rating. so i put it down, went over to the other shelf and got Naked Lunch. I'll never let ratings stop me from getting a movie ever again. Naked Lunch was awful.

thankyoucomeagain 08-06-04 04:28 AM

dude se7en was scary.

Escape 08-06-04 05:33 AM

Yeah, the thing about se7en was that all the murders were done in a maticulous way as to tortchure the victims slowly and psychologically. And it wasn't done by some psycopath who couldn't be killed either. John Doe was a real flesh and blood human who thought he was on a mission (by his own twisted logic) to give these "sinners" their due punishment for their own moral crimes involving the seven deadly sins. He was a fanatic or an extemist in the true sense.

Eyes 08-06-04 06:01 PM

it was a great movie, but it wasn't scary, but i guess different things scare different people

AboveTheClouds 08-06-04 07:01 PM

I agree. Se7en wasn't in the least bit scary. Just a really good film.

Escape 08-06-04 08:09 PM

The definition of scary can be interpretated in different ways. Do I think se7en was scary as in halloween scary? (Like an unknown evil that kills because that is it's nature......Or the audience always caught off guard by a quick fright.) No.
It however was both disturbing and very uneasy for me to watch because of the after effects of the murders.

Eyes 08-07-04 01:43 AM

ah, then i comes down to the difference in our definitions of scary

AboveTheClouds 08-07-04 01:47 AM

Like everything it's all based on opinions.

zBLARz 08-07-04 09:18 AM

Halloween and Friday the 13th 1,2 and 3.

Eyes 08-07-04 11:11 PM

Halloween pales in comparison to #6, and out of all the F13's 4 and 6 are definately the best, 3 was one of the better ones, but i'd have to vote for 4 and 6, no offense, just my 2 cents

Escape 08-08-04 05:32 PM

I've always like Friday the 13th part 7. Where the girl with the mental powers (tina) pretty much kicks jason's butt like nobody has done before. I believe "freddy" is the only other one to put the beats on him though I may be mistaken.

Turd Ferguson 08-09-04 03:01 AM

I saw the new Dawn of the Dead recently, and that was great. Never got a chance to see the original though.

Also, Child's Play scared the ****e out of me when I was a little kid.

led_zeppelin 08-09-04 05:38 PM

Scariest movie to me NOW is the Exorcist. But until about three years ago, it was the original Halloween. Nowadays I think Halloween is rediculous.

Eyes 08-09-04 09:36 PM

really, Don't get me wrong... I love the Halloween movies, but i didn't really think that they were scary, more to say that they were scary, but didn't scare me, if that makes any sense

AboveTheClouds 08-09-04 10:40 PM

If anything they weren't scary for the right reasons.. Halloween was scary for the suspense and the possibilty that good 'ol Michael could pop out anywhere, thats it.

Eyes 08-10-04 12:22 AM

i'll agree to that much

The book The Shining scared the bejeebus outta me.
The movie is scary only as a cautionary tale about letting a movie-star's persona overpower the writer's story.

The Original Dawn of the Dead is my favorite Movie of all time and is my choice for best Horror film ever made. Roger Ebert said the same thing so I can't be that off, right? There's a big big difference between the new one and the original and if you do choose to watch the original, you have to forget completely about the newer horror movies and its predecessor. The original is stunning, grand, wide-scope, and brilliantly scripted. It could've used a larger budget but everything is there. It's a movie however you have to put yourself into the time the movie was made and what movie were like then. It's much more raw than new horror movies and not nearly as polished as the new one but boy, what a script, cast, and amount of violence! Theres this one scene in the beginning, in the apartments where you just knew that horror would never be the same again after that moment of cinema.

Has anyone seen "Resurrection"? It has Christopher Lambert in it, and is also one of the scariest and most disturbing movies I have ever seen. Check it out, it's well worth the watch.

Eyes 08-15-04 08:56 PM

can't say i have

James_Bond 08-15-04 10:45 PM

The scariest horror movie in my book is The Shining, but my favorite horror is Halloween.

LordSlaytan 08-15-04 10:51 PM

The Blair Witch Project is the only horror movie that can cause gosseflesh to break out on my arms even after all these years.

Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen are my follow-ups.

i was always scared of halloween movies because when i was 3 i watched the movie and was scared to death

The_Rage888 08-16-04 12:15 AM

The greatest horror movie of all-times would either have to be Night of the Living Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Loner 08-16-04 02:16 AM

My favorite is Alien.

If you're a fan of horror you should really check out Eyes Without A Face.

l2ob 08-16-04 02:49 AM

Im still gonna have to go with nightmare on elm st 1. it was far more superior then the other ones

Eyes 08-16-04 11:48 PM

naturally, i'm still gonna have to stick by Halloween, but i'm keeping my eye on SAW a new psych thriller

AboveTheClouds 08-17-04 12:31 AM

I also forgot... NOSFERATU...... BEST.SILENT.FILM.EVER.

That looks psychodellic. Judging by the trailer, it will be a really disturbing movie. The most distrurbing film I've ever seen has got to be "Ressurection" with Christopher Lambert, let's see if this beats it.
