Looking forward to it. Shockproof is available on Youtube and is directed by the legendary Douglas Sirk. I have seen 11 of his films.

Cornel Wilde in the lead is the biggest name in this.
Character actors Russell Collins and Howard St John I recognize

Sam Fuller was one of the writers.

Interesting. They got divorced two years after making this film.

Maybe she multitasks. They couldn't afford two separate doctors, so she does it all.

Charles Bates who played Tommy is still alive and has been married to the same woman since 1958.

Allaby 09-06-24 08:10 PM

I wonder why Patricia Knight didn't do more films.

He was in 43 films, including The Song of Bernadette (1943) and The Curse of the Cat People (1944). I've only seen 4 films he was in. Shadow of a Doubt was the best film he was in out of what I have seen.

Probably not. It seems unlikely even back then.

Allaby 09-06-24 08:17 PM

If you take a wayward woman to the movies and buy her ice cream, she will turn from her ways and go straight.

Allaby 09-06-24 08:18 PM

I wonder what movie they saw.

The kid brother has a crush on the sexy bad lady. But who can blame him?

Re: Shockproof (1949): hownos/allaby viewing session

Fun fact: In many of Sam Fuller's screenplays he features a main character named "Griff", including in The Naked Kiss (1964), The Baron of Arizona (1950), House of Bamboo (1955), Forty Guns (1957), and The Big Red One (1980). Griff was the name of a soldier Fuller served with in the U.S. Army and who was killed overseas during World War 2.

it's strange how they are married in real like and haven't had a kissing scene.

Allaby 09-06-24 08:42 PM

"Excuse me while I push Humpty Dumpty off his wall"

That's a good line! I wonder if this is the only film noir that references Humpty Dumpty or if there are others.

Yeah, that's kind of funny. Maybe they will have a steamy kissing scene later.

This guy must be the worst parole officer ever.

The ending feels like a bit of a cop out and isn't quite believable.

it has a 6.5 rating. i would give it a 5.5.

Allaby 09-06-24 09:08 PM

Re: Shockproof (1949): hownos/allaby viewing session

Evidently they rewrote the ending and it was different in the original script. From imdb: Director Douglas Sirk signed on to make this film on the basis of Sam Fuller's original screenplay, which was called "The Lovers" and ended in a shoot-out. Co-producer Helen Deutsch rewrote the script and added a cop-out ending Sirk disliked. He later said Deutsch's script changes ruined the film by depriving it of the sense of doom in Fuller's original story.

Re: Shockproof (1949): hownos/allaby viewing session

It would have worked better with a darker ending. Film noir isn't supposed to have a happy ending!
