Anyone else freggin hate those movie slogans on the posters and on the covers of the DVD's and VHS'?!? They are so lame! I've only read one remotely good one.
for example: American Pie:"There's something about your first piece!" The Frighteners:"No Rest For the Wicked."(that ones ok) Army of Darkness:"Trapped in time. Surrounded by Evil. Low on gas" Duece Bigalow Male Gigilo:"He charges 10 dollars, but he's willing to negotiate." Mortal Kombat:"Nothing in this world has prepared you for this" Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels:"Bringing shame to criminals everywhere" How crappy are those?!? They bring shame to good movies. Anyone else hate these things? |
Oh and Final Destination's:"Death doesn't take no for an answer."
|
I like most of the ones you listed.
But yeah, even cool movies like X-Men have dumb slogans. - Protecting Those Who Fear Them. - We're Not What You Think - The future is here. Not terrible, but not the kind of quality you'd expect from a picture with a $70+ million budget! Ironically, X-Men had some good ones as well: - Join the Evolution. - The time is coming when all that we are afraid of will be all that can save us. A lot of movies seem to have this happening -- 10 taglines, 2 or 3 of which are good, 2 of 3 of which suck, and the rest in the middle. |
My favorite is the one for Sphere.
"Terror Can Fill Any Space" (which sound like an Earl Scheib commercial: "Terror Can Fill Any Space for only $19.99") |
I like Deuce Bigalow, and teh Frighteners and Army of Darkness, but the rest I dislike. I mean comeon! Lock, Stock deserves something better than that!!
|
Cobra: Crime is a disease. He's the cure.
Rambo III: The first time was for himself. The second time was for his country. This time it's for his friend. But you can't deny Highlander's: There can be only one. |
Aliens: The Bitch is Back
The Fly: Be Afraid Be Very Afraid Independence Day: Earth. It was nice knowing you. Godzilla: Size does matter. Kingpin: From the guys what brung you dumb & dumber |
Watched Copland last night: No-one is above the law.
|
Where do they all come from anyway? Seems like each movie has 10 of them now -- are these various slogans they pickup and dump along the brainstorming process?
|
I don't know. I was wondering that myself.
|
These Slogans are Supposed to ADVERTISE the movie...tell the public what it is about. i say away with the total thing. Dont you just hate it when stuff like that give away the entire movie???
[Edited by TWTCommish on 05-25-2001] |
Not sure about the worst one that i've seen, but one really good one was Alien
'In space no-one can hear you scream' I also like the one for the Charlies Angels movie which was 'Get some action' |
I'm sorry... but the Army of Darkness slogan is one of my all time favs, but then again I watch the trilogy constantly :-)
|
Yeah, that one isn't too bad.
|
If you think about it, "Trapped in time, surrounded by evil, low on gas" is corny as hell... but that's what makes the movie so much fun! Bruce Campbell is the greatest B movie actor of all time :)
|
Isnt Bruce Campbell the King of Thieves in Hercules/Xena and I think he had a TV series where he was some kind of Zorro with a brainy female sidekick set in colonial times. If thats Bruce Campbell---then absolutely he is the funniest actor!
|
I think he was in Xena, but I don't watch and can't say for sure. I know that he did have a tv series named Brisco County Jr. that I thought was hilarious.
|
He was in Jack of All Trades!!! Great show!
|
Probably the worst movie slogan I have ever heard would have to be The Matrix - "Nobody can be told what the matrix is.. you have to see it for yourself". How stupid is that?
|
Stupid? It's an incredibly clever marketing tactic. They're basically planting a seed inside you that wants to know what The Matrix is -- it wants to see the movie to find out. They are, in a VERY subtle way, saying that you can't understand the secret behind the movie without seeing the movie.
|
Is it just me, or do I sense quite a distance growing between our new member Mr. Falkwein and our gracious host TWTCommish? Let's keep things friendly, guys.:)
I've got to say though, the Matrix slogan, however clever it is, is still corny. I didn't like The Truman Show's. "On the Air. Unaware." Apparently it's catchy because it rhymes. I can imagine a person who writes ad copy for the studio sitting back at his computer, stretching his arms, satisfied with another day's work done. "Well, it's clever boss!" "OK, let's put it on every poster, so we can not only spoil the movie for everyone, but also sound really cheesy." I think The Frighteners' one is rather corny, just because the movie was more of a comedy than anything else. I didn't find it to be all that scary. It had some kind of tongue-in-cheek tone that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Or am I just overanalyzing? I dunno. I think "Look Closer...", for American Beauty was a clever marketing tactic. It's incredibly vague, but combined with the image on the poster it's quite intriguing. How else could what would normally be an art-house movie get into big multiplexes, let alone gross almost $100 million? |
I think they were just running low on ideas. I haven't actually seen the movie but I'm sure the script/plot is horrible and the graphics are incredibley cheesey.
|
Naw, I like Falkwain, or whatever his name is. :) Just don't always agree, that's all. I agree: American Beauty's is clever. I honestly don't see the corniness in The Matrix's main tagline.
|
The Matrix is one you'll want to check out. The visuals are spectacular, no lie.
|
what about
trust a few fear the rest- Xmen that doesn't even make sense! :) |
"Are You Unbreakable?" -- Unbreakable. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Unbreakable, but that tagline bugs me. It's not totally idiotic or anything, but it's kind of stupid. I would have used something about finding your purpose.

I can't think of any!! :( At the moment! :yup:

Re: Those Lame Movie Slogans!!
Some movie slogans really aren't so lame after all, however.
Granted, these particular movie slogans are meant to market the movie(s) that they're sloganeering, and can be grossly exaggerated at times. However, I also think that some of these advertising movie slogans have a strong element of truth to them. MGM's slogan for the classic film West Side Story, "Unlike other classics, West Side Story grows younger", for example, has a strong element of truth to it, and is not lame at all, imho. In fact, I never fail to notice something new every time I see this great film. |

Re: Those Lame Movie Slogans!!
I think the Rambo 3 slogan mentioned earlier in this thread takes the cake for the worst slogan.

Re: Those Lame Movie Slogans!!
My friend just reminded me of this little gem:
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/153/817564.jpg The Girl Next Door Matt Never Saw Her Coming.. But all his friends had! Utter genius!!! EDIT: Also an excuse to put a picture of Elisha Cuthbert up :D |

Re: Those Lame Movie Slogans!!
My current favourite terrible one line slogan
Ratman - "The critter from the shitter." Volcano - "The coast is toast." was pretty bad too. And a couple I thought were genuinely good. Scanners - "10 Seconds: The Pain Begins. 15 Seconds: You Can't Breathe. 20 Seconds: You Explode." *This worked really well with the trailer, too.* Alien - "In space no one can hear you scream." *I'm not much of a fan of the film, but it's a great tag line.* |
Re: Those Lame Movie Slogans!!
The worst one ever on screen, the Asylum's Alien VS Hunter. Slogan : Battle Zone: Zone

Best Movie Taglines
Greeting guys! Hope this thread has not been opened else where. If it has apologies, and if it has not please lets contribute.
Below are a few movie taglines that catch my eyes are: City of God- If you run you're dead... If you stay you're dead again. Period Yesterday- Powerless to change the past... She lived to change the future Notebook- Behind every great love is a great story Doubt- There is no evidence. There is no witnesses. But for one, there is no doubt. North Country- All she wanted was to make a living. Instead she made history. |
My favorite is for Jaws 2. Anyways its a much better tagline then movie.
"Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..." Such a cool tagline. My other favorite though is for Crank: High Voltage, again the tagline is better than the movie. "He was dead...He got better" Awesome. |
Re: Best Movie Taglines
I think there is a thread like this someone, becasue I've posted this before. I don't care though, because it's my favourite tagline of all time
Ratman - "He's The Critter From The Shitter" |

Most films have them. I suppose it's just to give a better feel for the films. If you've got a film called 'Polly's Wedding', you don't know whether it's supposed to be comic, dramatic, romantic, horror...the tagline is basically like a headline. |
