I feel 74 wins in the 70s, considering you have:
Chinatown GF II The Conversation The Taking of Pelham One Two Three Blazing Saddles The Towering Inferno The Parallax View Murder On The Orient Express The Gambler 76 was also an incredibly strong year with films like Network, Taxi Driver, The Outlaw Josey Whales, The Omen, All The President's Men, Rocky, ect. |
Re: Best Year in Cinema of Every Decade.
For the 2000s, I say without question 2007. You have There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men in the same year, which IMO were the two best films of that decade.
In that year, you also have gems like: The Assassination of Jesse James Zodiac Eastern Promises Michael Clayton Gone Baby Gone Before The Devil Knows You're Dead The Orphanage Sunshine Juno An extremely robust year. |

Re: Best Year in Cinema of Every Decade.
Tough decade. The following directors were active in the 40's: Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Howard Hawkes, and Alfred Hitchcock.
1940's 1940 I looked at a top 50 films of the 40's list and 1946 had the most movies listed (8), however quality wise I think 1940 has the best Fantasia The Bank Dick (W. C. Fields) Foreign Correspondent (Hitchcock) Gaslight Grapes of Wrath The Great Dictator (Chaplin) His Girl Friday (Hawkes) The Philadelphia Story Rebecca (Hitchcock) The Shop around the Corner (Lubitsche) |
Re: Best Year in Cinema of Every Decade.

Re: Best Year in Cinema of Every Decade.
1970's
It was a tough choice for me between 1971 and 1974. In the end 1974 is what I went with. Francis Ford Copola had two big feature films that year: The Godfather pt. 2 and The Conversation. Chinatown Young Frankenstein Blazing Saddles The Great Gatsby Alice Doesn't live Here Anymore Scenes from a Marriage Lenny Alice in the Cities The Enigma of Kasper Hauser. |
1990s (1999):
Academy: American Beauty* Highest Grossing: Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace* Top Films: Fight Club* Eyes Wide Shut* Magnolia* The Cider House Rules* The Green Mile* Girl, Interrupted* The Sixth Sense The Matrix* October Sky* Being John Malkovich The Insider* Toy Story 2 Tarzan The Mummy* Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me |
1980s (1985):
Academy: Out of Africa Highest Grossing: Back to the Future* Top Films: The Breakfast Club The Goonies* Ran* Come and See* Brazil* After Hours* Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters* Tampopo* The Color Purple* Kiss of the Spider Woman Prizzis Honor* Witness Rambo First Blood Part II Rocky IV Cocoon Spies Like Us* The Jewel of the Nile |
Its virtually impossible to answer this for the 90s.

Re: Best Year in Cinema of Every Decade.
I'll second Stu's recommendation of Children of Men. One of my favorite films of the 2000's.
|
Just starting off with a favorite year for my favorite decade in film (at least when it comes to Hollywood), if I had to pick a favorite from the 70's, it'd be probably be '75:
Jaws Barry Lyndon One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Dog Day Afternoon Monty Python And The Holy Grail And that's just for starters! |
