Have you ever applauded at the end of a movie?

I was just wondering if any of you movie goers had ever clapped at the end of a movie. The only time I ever applauded at the end of a movie was at the end of Jurassic Park when I saw it on opening day when I was 13 years old. Once the credits started rolling the whole theatre erupted into applause, so of course I joined in. I have never been to another movie where even one member of the audience clapped, let alone the entire theatre. Now, I know some of you are fans of Jurassic Park and others definitely are not, but I truly love the film and loved it even more when it first came out. Sure, it's not academy award worthy, but I think it's a great summer movie and a lot of fun. I will say that when the T-Rex makes it's first appearance is one of the most mesmerizing and jaw-dropping scenes in movie history and it still holds up well to this day--in my humble opinion of course.

The only other movie that rivaled that experience for me was Saving Private Ryan. At the end of that movie nobody applauded, but what was weird was that once the movie ended absolutely nobody got up from their seat. Everybody in the place kinda sat there in silence. Honestly it took probably 2-3 minutes before anybody got up and left and then slowly people began to file out. Pretty strange. Just for the record I loved that movie too.

LordSlaytan 11-28-03 12:38 AM

I remember it happened a lot more when I was younger. The original Star Wars ended in applause as well as Logan's Run.

When I went to see The Attack of the Clones, everyone started clapping and hooting when the 20th Century Fox screen came on. It is a part of Star Wars to hear the theme for its screen. The same thing happened at the beginning of Spider-Man as well.

I haven't seen applause happening at the end though in years. Though it probably happens more often in a packed house than a sparse one. I usually go to matinee's.

BTW: I also agree with you in regards to Jurassic Park. It made movie history. I adore it. :yup:

r3port3r66 11-28-03 01:23 AM

Great question. Yes I have applauded at the end of a movie. Flashdance had me crying and clapping..it was so embarrassing.

LordSlaytan 11-28-03 01:33 AM

That reminded me of when I saw Ghostbuster's and The Karate Kid double feature at the drive-in. A couple of hundred cars worth of blaring horns for the ending of the Kid.

"You're alright Larusso"

led_zeppelin 11-28-03 08:15 AM

I have been to a few movies where at the end they applauded. Titanic is one, back when I liked it. (let's face it, when it came out, everybody like it) Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, (both on opening day). Then I'm pretty sure the "moviegoing" people applauded for Shrek, but I could be wrong.

Piddzilla 11-28-03 09:53 AM

I usually avoid opening dates and wait until the worst hysteria has calmed down before I see films in a theater. Maybe that's why I haven't experienced that many occasions when the audience has applauded after the film.

It has happened to me once and that was when I saw Lukas Moodysson's film Together (Tillsammans), which was a huge hit in Sweden. It was very spontaneous and it's a nice memory.

Beale the Rippe 11-28-03 01:43 PM

I've seen a couple movies that got applause...but I honestly can't remember which ones. I think one of them was Spider-man...

The only times I can remeber applauding to were the LOTR movies (FOTR and TTT), The Empire Strikes Back and The Matrix. Probably there were some more, I can't think right now.
I have though been to films where the audience claps and such, and I am so confused as to why they would even do so.

Never been in a cinema where the film got applause. But us Brits are a bit shy........
As for Titanic, it recently got voted worst film of all time on Film 2003 (Uk TV program). I hate it personally, but surely some of the people who voted for it as the worst movie ever, actually own it!!!

juggla 11-29-03 09:19 AM

I saw sixth sense opening week cause my girlfriend wanted to go see it and people clapped at the end, that always confused the hell out of me.

The only movie i ever appluaded for was Blow, i love this movie.

A lot of people who loved it say they've always hated it now because that's the chique thing to do. Like it's embarrassing to admit you ever liked it. I think it's ludicrous.

T-850 11-29-03 02:35 PM

Everytime I go to see a Star Wars movie, the audience gives an applause, so I go along with the gang.

Garrett 11-29-03 02:47 PM

Star Wars I & II (it seemed good at the time) and Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Philmster 11-29-03 03:25 PM

That kinda thing don't happen round where I live, it just seems a stupid thing to do, who are you applauding?? The cinema for providing the film or the film-makers, who, unless they are there, they can't hear you ;)

If it's a really good movie...I say give it a round of applause, whether it's absolutely stupid looking or not. ;)

Never thought of that either. Good one ;)

Philmster 11-29-03 03:52 PM

I can understand applauding at a festival or screening or premiere, maybe, but not an average showing.

After the film, I either get up immediately and leave or sit for a bit, and take it all in, then leave, I rarely stay for the full credits and I never applaud :)

I think this is true, and I think the same thing happened with the new Star Wars movies. When I saw them in theaters the audiences were going crazy, and at the end everyone applauded for both. I saw them both twice in theaters with the same people, and now I still enjoy both movies, but those same people that saw them 2 times with me all say they don't like them. So I always say if you didn't like it then why go again? They never have an answer.

There's bound to be someone who does. That same person that kicks off the applauding in the cinema probably. ;)

i aplauded at the end of Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, Kill Bill, Mystic river, American Splendor, A christmas story (Jokingly), and Two Towers

would u stand up from u`r coach at home and applaude the movie?

alias 12-01-03 05:54 PM

Each time I am on a premiere or on a day before the premiere, There is always some people who applause, so do I ? Yes! I fallow the fellow! It's a little bit ridiculous!! Who's applause! the cast, the crew, but do they hear ? I don'T think so, unless you are at the world premiere and that all of them are in the crowd!

nebbit 12-09-03 07:17 AM

I have never applauded at an ordinary screening.

I did at a special screening of a Peter Weir Movie, He was there, he took questions about the movie after, so he was able to hear the applause.

I went with a friend to see "Titanic", it was a huge old theater, packed, when it finished, some woman up the back was clapping and shouting out "Bravo", she was the only one, soon after my friend and myself met up with an old friend of mine, she was telling us that she had just been to see "Titanic" and how much she loved it, just then I knew!, I said to her, "it was you, wasn't it, making an idiot of yourself clapping and shouting, she replied "yes" and we all laughed,

SpoOkY 03-13-06 01:31 AM

If its a premier then people are heaps more likely to clap. Actually quite a few people clapped (including myself) at the end of Good Night and Good Luck. That wasn't a premier but you could have predicted the applause from the age/type of people in the audience. I clapped at all three Lord of the Rings; one of those were premier. It could be a Melbourne thing.....or rather a Rivoli thing (the cinema where I saw all these movies). :)

SamsoniteDelilah 03-13-06 01:59 AM

I've applauded for a bunch of 'em.
When I saw Pirates of the Carribbean, there was spontaneous applause the minute Johnny Depp appeared on screen. :D (Not just from me!) It seems more likely in Hollywood, though. I remember an outbreak of applause during the credits for something, when Giovanni Ribisi's name came up. Here, people usually stay for the credits, unlike back in Ohio when you were half way home by the time they ended.

OG- 03-13-06 02:18 AM

Happens all the time. It isn't limited to just midnight screenings or even the end of the movie. Most recently, people applauded several times throughout The Hills Have Eyes. I had actually seen it at two different theaters and it was interesting to see what got applause at both places. Funny that people applaud violence either way...

gummo 03-13-06 02:53 AM

I dunno what goes on in the US but where I'm from people rarely applaud at movies. I have applauded at home. But I don't think I've ever seen/heard people applaud at a theatre. hmmm

keiko 03-13-06 04:04 AM

there have only been a few movies I've heard appluase at.
the first time was one of the Lord Of The Ring. The Two Towers I beleive.

the second was at Hary Potter.

and the last most resent time was Hostel.

the funny thing is none of the showings were premeirs. just a bunch of people fallowing some over-enthuseastic audence member.

slagzoo 03-13-06 12:21 PM

I'm with LordSlayton. There was a good amount of clapping at the end of the Attack of the Clones and actually at the end of The Phantom Menace as well. That was opening night at midnight though before everyone realized that they didn't like it. What I found more striking though was the amount of cheering and applauding at the beginning of that movie though. When the lights went down there was cheering, at the end of the previews there was cheering, at the Lucas logo there was cheering, at the beginning of the scrolling text there was cheering. It was almost 20 years worth of anticipation and supressed excitement all getting out at once (or four seperate times within a five minute span).

dojo 03-19-06 01:11 PM

Don't know if I ever applauded. I usually am left spechless if a movie is that good.

MCRRox 03-19-06 01:29 PM

Yes, I have applauded, booed, and screamed.
I have appluaded at LOTR, screamed at Harry Potter (not scared scream) and booed at the end of the second matrix. Not because it was bad, but because it was suspensful. I also booed at the end of harry potter.

limboslam 03-19-06 03:36 PM

I clapped at the end of Matrix 2 because it was over and I got to leave. (I was with people that wanted to see the whole thing)

This quote is old as hell, but I have to comment. Titanic, in my opinion, was not as great as all the awards and money it garnered. That being said, it was not, by a LARGE margin, the worst film of all time. This is an example of the worst type of elitism. It was "chosen" as the worst of all time simply because it was the most popular movie of all time. This is an attempt by those who decided that this is the worst movie, to simply sound more inteligent or intellectual than those millions of people who did like the flick. I can NOT stand those who try to convince people that they don't like a certain something simply because so many people do like that something. Reminds me of a fancy food critic that would never admit to liking a sloppy hamburger, simply bacause the masses generally do like a burger. It's "beneath" him.

britgent 03-19-06 09:31 PM

Sin City. Saw it opening night and the whole theater was reacting to it.

The first I could remember was "Jaws" I was 13 and was scared to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also I remember clapping at the end of Star wars in 1979

Ash_Lee 03-29-06 01:50 PM

..anyone else feel miffed that they didn't get to see Star Wars or Jurassic Park at the cinema (OK, so I wasn't actually alive when Star Wars first came out, but it's still a depressing thought)?

We were actually talking about Jurassic Park yesterday in school, and it turns out nearly everyone else saw it and remembered the applaue it got during that final shot of the T-Rex.

Mother, I'll never forgive you.

scottish_projectionist 04-01-06 08:28 AM

Iv never been to to a movie that everyone clapped at any time during the film :(, I think up here in scotland especially it doesnt happen, people just want to come into watch the film and then go home, i myself like to talk about the film before the film, say a few words about it during the movie then applaud and talk about it after the movie , but sadly no one else i know does and i usually get told to "SHUT THE F**K UP" :) so i talk to myself and thats why people call me "nutjob" lol

It seems to me that clapping at the end of a movie is mostly an American phenomena. Many others just enjoy a feelgood feeling at the end of a rousing movie.

tramp 10-04-08 11:28 AM

Re: Have you ever applauded at the end of a movie?

I have been in the theatre many times when there is a spattering of applause after a film. I applaud many times, especially after all the LOTR films.

But there was one time where I experienced something that I think very few have experienced and it hasn't happened since. It was in 1973. My friend and I were looking for a movie to watch and we opened the newspaper (no internet, lol) and saw an ad for a film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Since we both loved them in Butch Cassidy, we thought, "hey, let's go." We knew nothing about the film (contrary to what it is like today.)

When the film finished, the ENTIRE audience STOOD UP and applauded loudly and even a few "bravos" were heard. It was like being in live theatre and the other time I experienced the same thing was when I saw the Bolshoi Ballet! I will never forget it.

Unless I get to a premiere one day, I doubt that will ever happen again....

Oh, the film was, of course, The Sting. :D

I remember going to see Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls with some friends and sitting on the front row (not my idea). During a pool scene one of the characters (I think it was MacLachlan) turned on a tacky neon palm tree display causing one our group to shout 'Noooooo!!!' Then Elizabeth Berkley removed her top and he shouted 'Yesss!!!'

The whole audience roared with laughter, it was priceless.

OK, I want to confirm that my post above was about me personally, not the "cinema" or the "audience". I mean, I've watched lots of movies where people clapped at the end. I think the last two were WALL·E and The Dark Knight (actually my top two films of the year). I have also seen people throw sodas at the screen during the opening night of Exorcist II: The Heretic (original cut) and boo their ass off at the end of Unbreakable's opening day.

Dead Poets Society premiere and one screening in a movie theater - everyone including me were clapping and applauding at the end. Clapping in a premiere is natural but it was genuine and really long. Everyone was surprised that it was good.

Star Wars Phantom Menace premiere - everyone including me were clapping at the start during the 20th Century Fox theme being played, the Lucas Film logo being shown and the "Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away" being shown. At the end, no one was clapping. Seriously.
