Bursting into song, dancing about--it f*cking kills me, how much I love musicals.
Guys and Dolls "I got the horse right here The name is Paul Revere..." The Sound of Music "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" Chicago "He had it comin' He had it comin'..." West Side Story "Oh, Officer Krupke We're down on our knees 'Cause no one wants a fella with a social disease..." Cannibal: The Musical "The sky is blue And all the leaves are green My heart's as full as a baked po-ta-to..." Grease "Tell me more Tell me more Was it love at first sight? Tell me more Tell me more Did she put up a fight?" I'm likely forgetting several, but these are lovely starters. |

morning every other year. I find myself mysteriously drawn to watch it. |
Ooohhh....Ezikiel reminded me of The Little Shop of Horrors, how could I forget. Also, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is kind of a musical. I liked it a lot.
|
South Park:Bigger, Longer and Uncut isn't just a sort of musical, its a full blown musical, and a funny as hell one at that!
My favorite is either Newsies, or Chicago. |
Little Shop of Horrors every time!
"When i was young and just a bad little kid, My Mumma noticed funny things i did, Like shootin' Puppies with a B B Gun, And Posion Guppies! and when i was done, I'd find a pussy cat....and BASH it's head! Thats when my mumma said.... You'll be a Dentist! You have a talent for causing great pain!" Other musicals that you cant beat - Moulin Rouge ----- "Spectacular, Spectacular, These words are quite vernacular" Lion King ------ "Hakuunamattata, It's a wonderful phrase!" Beauty and the Beast ------- "Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour!" Chicago ----- "Give em the old, Razzle Dazzle.." The Rocky Horror Picture Show ---- "Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch meee! I wanna be Dirrrrrrty!" and Oliver Twist ------ "Consider Yourself, Well in! Consider your self, Part of the family!" Jeeez musicals are fun. For all you Brit viewers, Channel four is releasing its list of the 100 greatest musicals at the end of this year. You can still vote on them if you go to channel four's website. im looking forward to seeing what they will have on there  |
I love musicals. These are my top 10 favorites.
1. Top Hat (1935) I love all of the Fred and Ginger movies, but this one’s is my favorite. Snappy dialogue, great characters and a wonderful supporting cast. Everything clicks in this one for me. 2. Singin' In The Rain (1952) I never get tired of watching this. I love everything about this one. Jean Hagen is such a hoot as Lina Lamont. And of course the ‘Broadway’ number with Gene and Cyd Charisse will always be a favorite. 3. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) Another one I never get tired of watching. I love Howard Keel and Jane Powell together and the great cast had a nice chemistry together. I love the story as well as the musical numbers. The barn dance and following barn raisng fight scene will always be a stand out for me. 4. The Wizard of Oz (1939) 5. The Sound of Music (1965) 6. Chicago (2002) 7. An American in Paris (1951) 8. White Christmas (1954) 9. Harvey Girls (1946) 10. Meet Me in St Louis (1944) Others that I love are... Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), On The Town (1949), Gigi (1958), The Band Wagon (1953), Brigadoon (1954), Les Girls (1957). I also like alot of the B musicals, like the Good News and the Mickey and Judy musicals. They’re just fun. |
I can't believe I forgot The Wizard of Oz! I have always loved that movie. It's on my top 100 easy.
|
I hate musicals, but I was pleasantly surprised by West Side Story.

Ooooh...that's hard. I love musicals in general so I like them all. But favorites would have to be Les Miserables, Saturday Night Fever, Aida, and Cats.
I can't wait to see Hairspray, too! |
I'm gonna have to say Guys and Dolls is my second favorite, but my very favorite is...
South Park - Bigger, Longer, and Uncut I'm sure most of you wouldn't consider that a musical, but it does have many, many songs including, my favorite, "Kyle's Mom is a Bitch" performed in C-Minor by Mr. Eric Cartmen. |
Some say musical, others say 90 min. music video; I say Flashdance!
|
Grease
Chicago |
Rocky Horror Piture Show, Little Shop of HORRORS and Chicago
|
The Producers
who said singin in the rain? |
Singin in the Rain was one of the best musicals ever, but The Music Man will always have a special place in my heart. I had the joy of portraying the wacky Mayor George Shinn (Watch your frazeology! I couldn'ta made myself any plainer if I was a Quaker on his day off!). That was a riot.

Rocky Horror Picture Show and Chicago ...
|
I saw Singin' in the Rain for the first time yesterday. Well, at least parts of it - I'll finish it later since I taped it. I promise..
Anyway... Since I am not at all a musical fan, on the contrary, I kind of think the genre sucks, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I was really impressed with this film, both the singing and dancing parts as well as the comedy side of the film. The tempo was astonishing. The scene that really left me with my jaw hanging was the "Make'em Laugh" number with Donald O'Connor. I thought to myself "Man, he must have been full of bruises after that one!" and then I read on www.imdb.com that he had to take a three day in-bed-rest after the making of that scene. No wonder.... Overall, he and Gene Kelly just blew my mind. I would like to see one artist of today that can match their level of talent. They both sing, dance and act terrific and are really funny too. And the physical shape they must have been in... Then I am not sure if it is really O'Connor who plays piano in the film but if he does, well, then he is a great piano player too. Not to mention that Kelly both directed the piece AND did the choreography. And Debbie Reynolds were wonderful too. Cute, funny and singing really, really beautiful. This is a product of the studio system and genre film making at its best. You don't see professionals like these guys anymore. |
I don't really like musicals, which is funny because my wife loves them.
I did enjoy Moulin Rouge, though. |

Just like a husband. Heheh....My husband likes very few musicals also. He will watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers with us...because of Howard Keel...and to watch the Kids imitated that barn raising dance. Sooo....what musicals does your wife like? By the way James....it's been awhile since you've been to Mofo. It's good to see you posting. You should visit more often. :yup: Piddy...I'm really glad you liked Singin' In the Rain. Seeeee...you do have a soft heart. ;D Nice review too. |
It would be more appropriate to ask which musicals my wife doesn't like, and then I'm not sure there are any.
|
Highlander I guess cant be classified as a musical I guess, but the soundtrak was great.

Chicago! Chicago! Chicago!
Oh and Moulin Rouge |
I'm not sure if the only reason I'm saying this is because it was my first major production, or if it's just because it's a great show. . . but, my favorite show right now would be Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

I saw Moulin Rouge for the first time today and all I could think was WOW!
I had no idea that it was an infusion of contemporary music and more like an acid trip than a standard musical. I wish I had seen it in the theater. |
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Hair….
|
West-Side Story... one of my favorites...
|
Waaaayyy too many to choose from!
I guess Moulin Rouge is probably my favorite. I also love Anything Goes - because my high school had a production of that, which I was in :). Oooohh and I saw Cabret live on Broadway starring John Stamos.... he mooned the audience and we all saw his ass.... ;) |

Most of my favorites have been mentioned, so I won't repeat them. I'll mention a few that I didn't see mentioned:
In no particular order: Purple Rain Amadeus - my video movie guide had it listed under musical Top Secret - a spoof on the Elvis musicals Dirty Dancing A Hard Day's Night Jesus Christ, Superstar Yankee Doodle Dandy Rock 'n Roll High School |

Nightmare Before Christmas, along with the afore mentioned South Park. And A Muppet Chrismas Carol, if that counts.
|
I am shocked that I forgot Stomp ! (I hope this counts).
|
In some very vague order that should probably be taken with a gran of salt [with the exception of number one, and perhaps numbers two and three]:

I'd watch it, but I've lost all interst in Richard Gere since Mothman Prophecies. |
This is probably a dead horse, but since TCM is running musicals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this month, I thought I'd bump this up. They are also running an interesting short piece about the stars of the musicals inbetween some of the films.
I need to put my 10-20 list up. |

No *****. 2wrongs... I did back-to-back productions of Into the Woods... Once as Florinda and once as the Witch. It's such a fun show! I think the second act could use a little reworking, but it could make a great movie. |

I would like to see Tim Burton direct. Holden, I've seen video of that production. Am also a Bernadette Peters fan. She has "that certain something" by the 5 gallon drum, and a wonderful voice. I've never seen Sunday in the Park with George but have sung things from it. Singing "Sunday" is a religious experience. |

Oh that reminds me....has anyone seen R&H's version of Cinderella (1965)? I can remember seeing it as a little girl (even before Disney's version) and Lesley Ann Warren was always my vision of how Cinderella looked. She was so sweet and beautiful. I wanted that dress.

Thanks Susan...I'm glad to hear someone else has seen and liked R&H's Cinderella. The Princess and the Pea with Carol Burnett....I loved that! I've seen some of the others on video/dvd...but not this one. I remember this this on TV and laughing at Carol Burnett climbing up all of those matresses. In the Good Old Summertime. I think this is one of her movies that doesn't get as much recognition as the others. I've always liked it. :) Thanks susan. |
