Hardest Scenes To Watch
What are the hardest scenes for you to watch? For emotional or horror cringy worthy reasons?
The emotionally hardest scene for me to watch is in Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro when they watch the video Leonard made about how much he appreciates Dr. Malcom Sayer. It broke me inside so bad I've only watched it once because I didn't think I could bare it. But I don't know the most cringy worthy horror moment, the original reason I made this post, I'd like to see what really hits to peoples' gross nerve. I know there are plenty of scenes that are hard, but I don't know the hardest. Let me know how you feel! |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
For me it was:
After goose dies in top gun, the use of music along with the dejection felt in the scenes after, with meg consoling tom and vice versa...very low point in the film, i liked goose a lot |
• The entire second half of the movie Threads
• The rape scene in Irreversible • The two genital mutilation scenes in Antichrist • The needle scene in Audition • The fetus extraction scene in Inside • The masturbation scene in Mum & Dad • The dog tooth scene in Dogtooth *shudder* • The **** eating scene in Salň (and the courtyard scene too) • And while Im at it the **** eating scene in Sweet Movie (and the child seduction scene of course!) • The garbage disposal scene in Hard Candy • The tragic heaviness that hangs over the ENTIRE MOVIE in Our Children • The unthinkable child abuse portrayed in Strange Circus • The curb stomping scene in American History X • The lung transplant scene in Excision (more for its emotional impact then its gore actually) • The scene in Happiness where the father has to explain to his son that he raped his friend (and pretty much that entire movie frankly) • The naked fighting scene in Borat (nothing in the history of cinema has made me cringe AND laugh so much at one time) • The child/handicapped adult sexuality scene in Tideland • Any of the baby scenes in Eraserhead • The “promise me you wont die” scene in Ponnette • The foster home abandonment scene in Gifted |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
I can’t watch the curb stomp in American history x. Once is enough. The tooth scene in castaway made me cringe although you don’t see much. The green inferno first victim to eating is full on. Probably the goriest thing I’ve seen. Little bellow that is the eyeball cutting scene in hostel. Ewwwww lol.
Also, the baseball bat and vice scenes in casino. |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
I must add the multiple bat hits to the head scene in Frayed (2007)
I LOVED the scenes in Audition (1999). I could watch them endlessly. |
Pvt. Pile bathroom scene in Full Metal Jacket
hanging scene in An Officer and A Gentleman Ed. 209 malfunctioning scene in Robocop Mary Anne Matthews death scene in 8mm Alonzo highway scene in Miami Vice These are some of the more difficult scenes for Me to watch. |
Casino-baseball bat

Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Probably the eye scene in Un Chien Andalou. Haven't even watched it yet but that's one thing i can't watch.

Let me know how you feel! Do you mean the hardest scenes to watch in movies that we love, or in movies that we hate? Pretty much anything gross and/or gory is hard for me to watch, which is one of the reasons that I hate most horror movies. For emotional scenes, these are a few of the hardest scenes for me to watch: Return To Me (2000) - Near the beginning of the movie, when Bob comes home from the hospital after his wife dies, and the dog is watching the door for Bob's wife to come home. It breaks my heart watching Bob try to explain to the dog that she's not coming home. Always (1989) - When Pete is watching Dorinda and Ted kissing, and he asks Hap to take him out of there because he can't take watching her kissing another man. The Champ (1979) - Pretty much every time Ricky Schroder cries, I cry too. When his father gets arrested, when his father tells him to go stay with Annie, when he finds out that Annie is his mother, and of course, at the end of the movie, when he tries to wake up "Champ". :bawling: |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
The scalpel foot scene in 'I saw the Devil'. I wince at the very thought of it.

My parents used to yell "Wake up Champ" at us our whole lives, they love that movie. |

Count me in on the finale to Requiem with a Dream Other scenes I find hard to watch (off the top of my head): I can't stand to watch Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) get buried under all that dirt in her car in 1978's Superman. I find the scene in True Romance where James Gandolfini beats up Patricia Arquette really hard to watch, The rape of Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry Joe Pesci's death scene in Casino Just about any scene in The Passion of the Christ...pick one. Michelle Pfeiffer being paralyzed in the bathtub while the water arises around her in What Lies Beneath Tippi Hedren in the attic at the finale of The Birds When Regan vomits on Father Karras in The Exorcist |

I always skip past the bit with the homeless man in American Psycho but I’m cool with watching everything else in the movie.

Nothing to do with horror, but in My Dog Skip, the dog's master goes off to college and the dog waits at the bus stop and waits and waits for him to return for years, until...no, I just can't say. I hate manipulation where innocent pets are concerned, especially when the outcome is bad.

There was a scene in one season of AHS where one of my favourite actors took to his tongue with some little pruning shears for the garden. I was screaming my lungs out. I guess I am suitably braced now for Oldboy. thank You again, sawduck. I have not removed it from the viewing list or you from the xmas card list. Larry - yes. The scene with Madly and Daniel left a lil tear in my eye, I must say. I was thinking to myself 'Whatever you do Daniel, dont laugh' and what did he do? Oh dear. The nerve drilling scene in Marathon Man. Made it all the more difficult reading Dustin Hoffman's biography. I really dont want to know who the method actors are. That screaming you heard was real. Gave me a lifelong terror of dentists! |

This reminded me of the movie Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009). I was in tears watching Hachi wait at the train station for Richard Gere's character to come home every day. :bawling: |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Yep, I only saw the last part of My Dog Skip and knew I'd never watch it from the beginning, no matter how good the movie was. I'd heard rumors of Hachi: A Dog's Tale and you've confirmed them for me, gb. I appreciate it. Hate movies like that where the dog gives his everything and then dies. I've had enough of that in real life. I've heard the same rumor about Marley and Me---won't watch it. I Am Legend, with Will Smith...I had a feeling when I saw the German Shepherd on the poster but I wanted to see it because of the story which I'd seen in two previous movies and liked. But they didn't have a dog in them, this one did, and it turned out my suspicion was right. He was only there as a sacrifice to jerk our emotions around. The movie wasn't great, but I was pissed when the dog died and watched the rest in an angry blur. The only one that I would actively watch with the dog's death again is Old Yeller because it was handled very well, and well, the dog saved his family and turned rabid and had to be put down. Then it was found out he had sired a litter of pups, one of which would star in Savage Sam, which I've yet to see but would like to...if he lives to the end. Oh yeah, and the first John Wick I'd watch again because the dog is the whole catalyst for John Wick to go on his killing spree.

I bet Wes Anderson is a big John Wick fan.

I also hate movies where dogs (or other animals) die, but the hardest part about watching Hachi: A Dog's Tale is

watching Hachi wait for Gere's character. Hachi waits at the train station every day because he doesn't understand that Gere's character is dead, and won't ever come back. :bawling:

Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Sorry about reminding you! That reminds of that segment on Futurama where Fry's dog waits for him, unaware that he's cryongenically frozen and will never come back to him. Gah! Even for a cartoon, it's hard for me to watch, which is why I've only seen it once. :(

Most people my age probably know the story from the episode of Futuruma, Jurassic Bark probably the most famous episode. I knew about it before that though so that didn't work for me either. |

Fortunately I don't watch Futurama, so I've never seen that. |

I didn't know anything about Hachi before I saw the movie, so it worked too well for me. I cried my eyes out watching the movie, and I even started to tear up just thinking about it tonight while remembering it. I actually loved the movie, but I'll never watch it again because it's just too hard to watch. |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Buried (2010), very distressing. 127 Hours (2010), how to endure this situation?

Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
I also really hated Marley & Me. To be fair my girlfriend at the time basically told me the whole plot then said "let's watch it!" Still it was horribly acted and i didn't buy into the relationship.

I get why it's sad but it's just what happens, the dog lives a long, good life then it dies. If the relationship was done well maybe i'd care more.

For me, the problem with movies like Marley and Me is that
WARNING: "SPOILERS for "Marley and Me"!!!" spoilers below
it doesn't matter if the relationship is done well or not. If the dog is cute and well-behaved, I can fall in love with the dog in the first few minutes of the movie, and then I'll cry if the dog dies at the end.
I can't even walk through a pet store without Hubby because he knows that I'll probably come home with another pet if he's not there to stop me. |

Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Speaking just for myself, it's not that I'm manipulated by the movie, it's that I don't like it when a pet (mainly dogs) dies. It's just not entertaining or moving to me. It makes me angry that the filmmakers tried to manipulate me or would try, if I watched their movie. Now that you've made it clear about Marley and Me, Camo, I might give it a try some day. I can deal with the whole
Now movies like Cujo, I'm like "Die, sucker, die!" :) |
Re: Hardest Scenes To Watch
Fully agree regarding The Champ and the Casino scene mentioned!
A few more... Good Will Hunting - “It’s not your fault” A Simple Plan - the final scene between Billy Bob and Bill Paxton. Heartbreaking Children of the Corn II - voodoo doll scene with the nosebleed The Wicker Man - fire scene. Being carried by that big oaf and not being able to do anything about it. Come to think of it...all scenes showing characters being burnt alive are extremely distressing for me (Last of Mohicans, Silent Hill, Game of Thrones etc) Platoon and The Wild Geese - similar scenes of our favourite characters being left behind Dead Man’s Shoes - not one particular scene, but the movie as a whole. Especially more so after the reveal and how it stays in your mind for days whilst you reflect on it all. Great film |
The cull in Outback (aka Wake In Fright) is a scene I simply won't watch after having seen it once, it's not so much that it's real life footage which was incorporated into the movie but that imo it's so unnecessarily protracted. Shame 'cos up to that point it's a fun watch.

But that's why I believe it's so powerful. It shows what horrors the world is capable of, and how we're not doing enough to prevent them. Though I still feel sorry for the mentally handicapped guy, as it also shows how easily people can be coerced into doing things they KNOW are wrong, but will be judged for if they don't submit to it. |

The chicken scene in 'Nothing bad can happen' (2013) That's one scene that I would probably turn away from if I watched the movie again. There's also a few scenes toward the end of the documentary 'Gleason' that I don't think I could put myself through again simply because they are so sad. |

Two surgery scenes from one of my favorite movies Master and Commander (2003).
First is the arm amputation scene in the beginning of young Mr. Blakeney - I think this is harder to watch because the patient is a child in an age where there was no anesthesia! Second is the self-surgery Dr. Marturin (Paul Bettany) performs on himself to remove a bullet on the Galapagos Islands. |
