kung fu movies

whats your fav kung fu movie?
any martial art movie can count

Kong 09-08-03 07:05 AM

Probably Hero; at least for the time being.

Mairosu 09-08-03 07:19 AM

I'll go with Jackie Chan's Project A here, followed by Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China.

linespalsy 09-08-03 10:20 PM

for jackie chan it's project a or drunken master.

my overall favorites are 'iron monkey' and 'mr. vampire' though.

havent seen 'hero' yet, but cant wait, zhang yimou's movies are generally great, and i'm more than a little curious how this one turned out as it sounds like quite a departure for him.

Tuna 09-08-03 11:27 PM

This is my kind of post..
-Five Deadly Venoms of course
-Master of the Flying Guillotine was great, the weapon and the retro techno soundtrack sets it apart from the other 70s movies.
-All Bruce Lee movies are a given, especially The Chinese Connection
-I have to admit Hero was pretty damn good too, you can't go wrong with Zhang Ziyi (well forget about Rush Hour 2) or Jet Li.
-I thought Kiss of the Dragon was a huge exception to the Jet Li Hollywood rut
- Five Fingers of Death ( I assume this should be seen before Kill Bill if you are planning on it)
-Crouching Tiger was good, but without the hype.
-Jackie Chan's Drunken Master
-Jet Li's Fist of Legend, somewhat considered a remake of The Chinese Connection but I feel not as good the "original" Yuen Woo Ping is the choreographer of course.

I'm sorry but that's all i got :(

edmo 09-09-03 12:04 AM

i agree with tuna that crouching tiger hidden dragon was really good, but without all the hype. i really loved the fight scene between the two women.. that was well done, and just very entertaining. the tree top chase scene was also very neat. chow yun fat rocks my socks too.

Deckard 09-09-03 12:44 AM

I would say that the role in CTHD was his worst though.

really? CTHD i reckon theres worse

Of all the Chow characters, the one in CTHD is the least memorable. Totally devoid of the classic Chow charisma. He looks a bit restrained there...which I guess is also the effect of hastily learned mandarin specially for the shoot.

Revenant 09-09-03 07:21 PM

I've always been partial to Jackie Chan's 'Police story' and Jet-Li's 'The Legend'. Not necessarily the best films to showcase their talent but they were very entertaining.

Anything by Bruce Lee is an automatic classic.

DeMoN 09-09-03 07:36 PM

I love Kung Fu movies, and there are so many great ones out there.

Ok this is my list:

Once Upon A Time In China
The Fist Of Fury(I think this is named The Chinese Connection in the States)
Drunken Master
Armour Of God
Enter The Dragon
Meals On Wheels
Project A
Bloodsport
Blade(The Tsui Hark movie; not the vampire one)
Yojimbo
The Seven Samurai
The Barefoot Kid
Marked For Death
The Last Hurrah For Chivalry
The Legend Of Fong Sai Yuk
The One
Snake In The Eagle's Shadow

I think I will stop there, as you can see, I do like a hell of a lot. I have a massive collection, which I have accumulated over the years.

Mairosu 09-09-03 07:41 PM

How are those three classified as "kung fu" ? Blade, okay, I can see that maybe, but Kurosawa's samurai films are nowhere near the kung fu genre.

And I believe you're right about the Fist of Fury

DeMoN 09-09-03 07:47 PM

I was generalising the whole Martial Arts genre, I didn't realise you wanted specific Kung Fu movies as I saw someone else mention a few Samurai movies. Sorry if I have annoyed you.

No, 'course not, not annoying me at all, but I think the topic at hand is just related to kung fu movies, and I thought maybe you got it wrong. All is good. Especially the movies you named. :p

Back on topic, anyone else saw Mr. Vampire apart from me and Linespalsy ?

Mairosu 09-09-03 07:59 PM

any martial art movie can count
Well colour me blind :modest:

Sorry for that.

I was suprised to see that this was directed by John Woo who's famous for having his guns blazing rather than fists flying. I guess he had to start somewhere.

Well fairly recent, Dec 2002 I've heard, which was the release in Asia. It was supposed to come to theatres here November 5th or something but got shafted by Miramax like a bunch of movies are these days and no official date is there last I heard. I suggest you get a region 0 on ebay, got mine for about 10 bucks

King Kyran 09-10-03 12:16 AM

Hey Martial Art films, great :D

Personal favourites:

Seven Samurai
Yoshimbo
Musashi Miyamoto Trilogy
Rashomon
Kagemusha (didn't really have much martial arts in it, does it count?)
Iron Monkey
Mr. Vampire
Legend of a Fighter
Drunken Master
Once Upon a Time in China 1&2
Encounters of the Spooky Kind
A Man Called Hero
Hero
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Fist of Legend

and all of Bruce Lee's, apart from Game of Death if you count that.

Was personally a little disappointed with Stormriders :indifferent:

Yeah, Last Hurrah For Chivalry, was an excellent movie. I like the way the two main characters instantly connected, and the swordplay is just astounding. It's a shame this movie is often overlooked, I think John Woo did a superb job on it.

I was too, dude, I bought A Man Named Hero and Stormriders both on the same day. I wanted to see what these two movies had to offer, I really liked A Man Named Hero, even though I do believe they could have made it a lot better. Once I had watched Stormriders I was left bitterly disappointed, I had expected a whole lot more!

Deckard 09-11-03 09:49 AM

Just a couple of interesting martial arts films more focused on charecters than action. Often overlooked but well worth finding these are US examinations of Eastern Martial Arts philosphy and disciplines that are well worth checking out: (And definetly rank as all time faves)

Sydney Pollock's THE YAKUZA
- Starring Robert Mitchum and Ken Takura

John Frankenheimer'sTHE CHALLENGE
- Starring Scott Glen and Tushiro Mifune

Jim Jaramusch's GHOST DOG:WAY OF THE SAMURAI

Terence Young's RED SUN
-Starring Charlie Bronson and Toshiro Mifune

All these films examine the samurai code and way of the true martial artist in very interesting and unique ways.

King Kyran 09-12-03 03:43 AM

ghost dog a good film i forgot about that one

DeMoN 09-12-03 11:30 AM

I see no one has mentioned "The Karate Kid." :D I really liked the series, and as a child I used to watch them all of the time.

I haven't seen Ghost Dog, I saw it in the video store when it first came out and I have always wanted to watch it. I just never got around to seeing it, I think it has even been on television and I have still missed it.

yeah ghost dog isnt so much the physical aspect of martial arts more the spiritual side
but its still cool

Mark 05-03-04 12:43 AM

I haven't seen very many martial arts films, but I'd like to start. The entire "Pai Mei" sequence in Kill Bill Vol. 2 got me interested. I'd like to see more.

Any suggestions on what few I should start with?

Here are some I've already seen:

Enter the Dragon
Game of Death
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Rumble in the Bronx

and if we're including samurai:

The Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
The Hidden Fortress

I have a long list of martial arts films that keep getting mentioned, but I don't know where I should start. Here are the films I have on the top of my list to see:

Once Upon a Time in China
Fist of Legend
Iron Monkey
Drunken Master

I'll wait until the US release of Hero in Aug. of '04, but the trailer during Kill Bill Vol. 2 looked really good.

Maniac 05-03-04 02:23 AM

I have so many favorite Kung Fu films I'll just list some of them

5 Superfighters
Game of Death
Fists of Fury
Enter the Dragon
Return of the Dragon
Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter
Return of the Street Fighter
Chinese Connection

I like alot of old school kung fu movies.
Because they can get rediculesly funny at times. As well as being entertaining.

Not Academy Award winning though.

Dead 05-12-04 02:10 AM

Heh, yeah. I need to check out some of the above titles, I like

Ong Bak
http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/20...ailer-page.htm
Drunken Master 1/2
Anything with Bruce Lee or Sammo
Drive - Mark Dacascos is an incrediably underrated martial artist.

runningscared 05-12-04 07:59 PM

All the Bruce Lee and Jet Li films...I'd be here all day listing them one by one (though v.partial to "The One")

Sifu_WFH 09-14-06 04:04 PM

Cant pick one but here is a few great ones
Once Upon a Time in China 1 and 2
The Legend of Drunken Master
The Defender
Fist of Legend
Snake in Eagles Shadow
Iron Monkey
Fearless Hyena
Ong Bak
The Master

sith_rising 09-14-06 11:18 PM

Fist of Legend is my favorite. Other tops are Fearless, Ninja Wars, Iron Monkey, Kill Bill, Once Upon a Time in China, Bloodsport, Shogun's Ninja, Chinese Connection, The Octagon, Revenge of the Ninja, Samurai Trilogy, The Yakuza, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, and Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter Series.

kung fu hustle... laughed all day when i watched that movie! lol

awsom50 09-21-06 08:12 PM

Difficult one, as I like so many, but I would say that one of the best martial arts films per se, has to be Jackie Chan's original Police Story. Never tire of watching it.

James

AussieGirl 09-22-06 12:55 AM

Can't decide all of Jet Li movies, especially the ones he made in Chinese there much better than his english version ones :D

m0dern_pr0phet 09-22-06 12:57 AM

The younger jet li was the better his movies were. I did enjoy some of his hollywood ones though. That being said, Tony Jaa movies are better I would like to see what America will do to him once he gets hollywoodified. You know he will.

AussieGirl 09-22-06 01:00 AM

I guess Tony Jaa will be the next action man since everyone else is old and retiring.
