Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
I've seen a lot like a lot a lot. Which one really does it for you though. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the movies people find the most disturbing don't actually involve a splatter of blood, the mental disturbings are always the more severe I feel.
Firstly I'm deeply disturbed by how many fast and furious movies have been made and bad Dwayne Johnson movies in general really, believe me I loved the Rock "If ya smellllllllll what Dwayne is ruining". Seriously If I had to go with one it'd have to be either Halloween (the f****** just doesn't die), Requim for a dream (if you take or have taken hard drugs you'll understand) A Serbian film (Just dispicable) I'll go with "Requim for a dream" because "A Serbian film" doesn't deserve to win anything. |

Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
I'd probably vote Irreversible. I havent seen A Serbian Film yet because Im basically afraid... But of those Ive seen Irreversible probably took the longest to recover from. Salo, while disgusting and atrocious, was more intriguing to me then massively disturbing. Its so far over the top that you have to wonder what its REALLY trying to say. Plus they dont victimize the victims which helps.
|
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
As soon as I heard that was an infant rape scene in A Serbian Film, I lost all interest in ever seeing. I'm sorry, but that's just not art... it's simply f*cking sick and indicative that the director should probably be committed and investigated. Who TF thinks up sh*t like that????
A distrubing movie that I actually ENJOYED is Would You Rather. Have seen it a few times. Not for the faint of heart, but a fun movie imo. But I'll never bring myself to watch something as disgusting as A Serbian Film. |

For me......Natural Born Killers.

Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
I've never seen Benny's Video, but it sounds pretty damn disturbing.

Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
Requiem For a Dream is probably No.1 for me, the last 30 minutes are just *shudders*.
Irreversible is a real endurance test. Rape is a pretty disturbing subject and when you have an 8 minute, one-shot rape scene with the camera completely motionless, it's very hard not to skin ahead. The fire extinguisher still makes me cringe a little bit. If you're not too squeamish, I'd highly recommend. It's pretty great. Funny Games is disturbing in a very different type of way. Seeing the villains basically being Gods, deciding whatever happens to the family, with the family having basically no chance of escape or survival, is a very disturbing cinema experience. Cannibal Holocaust is kind of overrated when it comes to disturbing. The coati stabbing scene made me cringe REALLY badly, but apart from that it's not that bad. Honorable mentions: Seven, Black Swan, Man Bites Dog, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Dear Zachary. Basically if you couldn't tell any fcked up movie that fcks with me is gonna become a favourite of mine. I'll probably not watch A Serbian Film for a while, the reviews are very mediocre. |

Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
Already gave my number one vote but a couple honorable mentions would be Our Children and Sweet Movie. The former was pure psychological torment to endure as it combined mental illness with filicide in a way where you are helpless to watch the unthinkable. The latter was a truly horrible combination of senseless surrealism and a full display of the most taboo of subject matters possible so your brain doesnt know what to do with it other then want to puke and burn it in a rage. And Antichrist is a rough watch and a downer. But still not quite the level of Irreversible to me.
|
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
Whoever hasn't seen Requim for a dream go watch it it's disturbing but not in a real sick way more like really really thought provoking way, Ellen Burstyn is unbelievable not the kind of film you'll have to watch behind the covers put it that way. I've never been able to get hold of irreversible for some reason. Martyrs was highly disturbing and Funny games that I've both seen mentioned on here. Another one that is popular among movie fans is Last house on the left, not distrurbing to me both versions were simply terrible films, same can be said for cannibal holocaust.
Werner Herzog's Aguirre wrath of God really disturbs me for some reason I just think Klaus Kinski in general is a very disturbing actor to be honest, really great film too glad to see it's 8/10 on IMDb . Also Dogtooth was rather disturbing it's the silent scenes in the movie that amp it up for me similar to funny games. |

The question for me here is whether I've been more disturbed by depictions of reality or unreality over the years. I feel like it's the latter. The Entity (1982) bothered me a lot, playing on the age-old fear of the unknown.
Reading some of the comments above I was also thinking about Tim Roth's The War Zone (1999). Brave and unflinching film I think but didn't disturb me the same. |
I did an entire thread on this subject...coming in at #1 was The Passion of the Christ.

Dunno about all time but this has definitely stuck with me in an unsettling way. Great film. |

Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
I've never seen it, but I have had people suggest subtly that if someone decides to watch Bumfights: A Cause for Concern (2002) it makes them a bad person in some way. One of the only films that I could say that about.
However, as I have mentioned previously, I have had someone almost punch me for making them watch Irreversible (2002), and Noé has gone on record as saying that the film is intentionally manipulative. Conversely, I think that The Grave of Fireflies (1988) is far more manipulative in certain respects. Oh, and I cannot forget the unspeakable hate people have for Salò (1975), which is oddly ironic IMHO. That said, I completely understand the reasons why. |

Also you will get the people who dont really understand what you can take. My husband doesnt want me to watch Salo because he thinks it will completely freak me out. Maybe it will, maybe it wont. That in itself is not a big issue for me because I dont want to see kids doing the kinds of things they're forced to do. Hope that all makes sense. inrteresting topic. And just looked up bumfights because I hadnt heard of it. I dont think I would like to see this, but I wouldnt judge you for checking it out. If it's teens ridiculing homeless people or making them a spectacle that would upset me. if it's handled sensitively and as a straight out doco, probably a different pov. |

The most talked about scene (yes that) is one of the most effective and disturbing things I've seen in cinema tbh. It's realistically portrayed, framed and not at all over-acted. It really hones in on the helplessness and desperation, and made me very angry when I saw it. I love Gaspar Noe's films so far however and he knows how to present his messages in a way that really reaches the hearts of viewers (well, like me, those who like it) |

I hope you enjoy it (if that's the way to put it) or are as inspired/provoked by it as I am. Outside of the powerful themes, the color-scheme and Noe's signature camera style are also really impressive :) |

I Stand Alone being violence/revenge coupled with amending family relationships Irreversible being how the past is......irreversible, and sexuality + the underbelly of society Enter The Void being the things I mentioned above Love....being like giving the sexuality in ETV a huge heroine boost and sort of exploring our psychological discomfort (which in itself is paradoxical!) surrounding it, I guess |
How would Cannibal Holocaust and Salo: 120 Days of Sodom fare in this contest? I haven't seen either, though.

1. the actual animal kills which he went on trial for and 2. He went on trial for killing indigenous people. You'll know the scene when you see it. Unless I've got my facts mixed up which is highly likely at themoment, Deodato went bankrupt over those trials. The animal kills are real. The 'human snuff' was thrown out of court Also there were a lot of problems with the two leads (?) on set. She wanted to have sex with him in front of the local people; he refused and she got the shts; storming off the set, holding up shoots etc. I would have to look it up to clarify but if anyone wants to correct me, feel free. Salo is about World War II Italy. Libertines tortured young teens. The only scene I know about is they're made to act as coprophiliacs. It may well be the age of the 'young' actors that caused this to be banned (much liker Ken Park which was banned in my country - the actors were under age and the simulatedsex does not look simulated) I hope that helps a bit. /Not really what you were asking but thought you would find it interesting. With 'extreme horror' I read quite a bit about it afterwards which is often more interesting than the movie for me |
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
Never seen Cannibal Holocaust, doesn't sound interesting or intriguing to me though.
I remember seeing Salo once but I don't really remember much of it. It was a depraved film and I remember one rape scene where some dude in uniform rapes a woman chained up at the dinner table room. Other than that, my memory of the film is both vague and it left a dull impression on me. Perhaps it was the mood I was in, I don't know. |
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
I turned off "Natural Born Killers" within 20 minutes, but I was 17 when I tried to watch it.. Dogtooth is a good example.
|
A Serbian Movie is one of the few films I had turn off. I felt dirty and ill watching it, I checked afterwards to see how far I made it through and I wasn't even close the ending
Human Centipede 2 is the other one I had to turn off. It's just acts of sadomasochism, and the abuse of a disabled character etc. I just couldn't. There's the bloodbath scene in Hostel 2 which I struggled to get through as well  |
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
@DrJacoby
Ifound CH quite dull all round except for the scene he was charged for. Looked real to me so I can understand why there was a witch hunt. animal kills for entertainment purposes really upset me but the animals were fed to the tribes people, however the turtle kill from memory is very brutal. |
Re: Most disturbing movie of all time!!!
Regarding Salo I don't know if it's because it's dated now, but I didn't find it too disturbing. The worst part for me was listening to the stories told by the three prostitutes, my skin crawled just listening to it even though what they describe isn't shown.

I think the Human Centipede though was intended actually to be a dark comedy but the subject matter led it to be promoted as a 'serious, evil, shocking horror".
The movies even came from a joke between Tom Six (or whatever he's called) and one of his friends while getting drunk  |

As I said, I only watch his movies because they get banned, and further to that, it shts (to stay on topic) me to tears, a family lobby grouphas the power to determine what adults get to watch just because they have kids or grandkids who may 'accidentally' see these. Well lil Johnny andhis friends are certainly going to find them illegally when they make such a huge bloody deal about them as to get them totally censored. And it makes me laugh that they are so clueless about that. A couple of my young nephews said they pirated these because they saw the broohaahaa on the front page of the paper when they got banned. Ken Park as well, |

I thought the green inferno was decent. Yes it was sickening. Probably the most graphic violence I have seen, it was visually disturbing but engrossing, unfiltered, somewhat original in showing survival at its ugliest. I had read critic reviews prior and they were appalled by the vomiting, diarreah and sexual behaviour....I didn’t have a problem with those minor scenes and the film kept a good interesting pace. I would recommend it to any horror fan with a warning that it contain extreme, somewhat realistic, unflinching violence.

Irreversible more heartbreaking than disturbing for me I think if I watched it not knowing that scene was coming and it not been so popular (or unpopular if you like) it would have hit me harder, still great film.
I don't want to make a separate thread on this as it's a question closely linked. Does anyone feel watching these real disturbing, horrifying or damn right ugly films toughen you up in real life, kind of make unphased by certain situations, it has me. For example when I got a broken wrist when I have quite a physical job. I was like "that fella from Requim for a dream had his arm amputed because of his own stupidity, his mum turned into a complete nutter and looked scary as f*** and his stunning girlf became a massive whore, so things could be worse. |

Ok so the three films that distributed me the most where,
1. 100 days of sodom 2. I saw the devil 3. A Serbian film 4 Also the exorcist on the first watch. But now I don’t find it so disturbing . I have not seen it yet but I hear the butcher boy is very distributing to. |
