IMDB Assimilation
Let's vet :)
I'm curious how new members feel about the place, coming from IMDB myself a few years ago. Or what members in here think? I wonder if things will change, enough to notice... I'd like to think (like any refugee) that with a solid foundation, it only widens our spectrum, makes everyone better. |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
Well, it beats the crap out of IMDB, that's for sure.
The long term residents have been generally nice and helpful. There are some technicalities I'm still finding out [ex: only a few minutes ago I found out how to leave a comment], but overall it's pretty simple to follow. |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
I think it's a very good cyber experience of culture clash and assimilation for 'old timers' and 'immigrants' in the real world. Takes a bit of time for dust to settle as strangers on both sides figure out the culture, lingo, private jokes etc. It's a new adventure in learning about people IMO. Would be a great cultural studies topic.

Could you please explain little more? What should change and "to notice" what? Thanks |

Re: IMDB Assimilation
The balance on MoFo has changed already tbh, but in a good way.
In the past 2 weeks, I've seen a huge jump in amount of posts, and the game threads have all exploded too :) There's numerous threads that normally would get a few replies, then die off... but there's been an influx of conversations going on and intelligent discussion and to add to that, more and more older threads gaining a new lease of life as well. Sure, there's concern from the old-timers, including me, that some of the trolls from IMDb will arrive here and try to carry on their flame wars... but they won't last long due to the team of moderators... and won't last long due to the fact that the IMDb refugees who are currently here aren't the trolling type. As far as I've seen, apart from that slight rocky start 2 weeks ago between a few of the refugees and a couple of the long-term MoFos, everything has been pretty solid  |

Maybe we have someone from a country who has a ton of great recommendations. I imagine some will talk more or talk less depending on what's being discussed... I think it's a good thing. I've probably talked to a few on IMDB, and we have a nice foundation here. You won't see spamming, etc.. |

I feel a bit naked but otherwise ok?

Re: IMDB Assimilation
Eh, I like some of the newbs, but also don't like some of them.
Which is how I feel about the MoFo regulars too. So I guess, aside from some bumps in the road, so far so good? |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
^^ This!

Re: IMDB Assimilation
Really doesn't seem all that different to me here. I think the whole "IMDB phenomenon" has been overblown. There's always new people showing up here. Some stay for awhile and then disappear. This will be no different. Only the truly crazy and bizarre last here.

I like IMDb members. Mainly because we can slowly turn them into weirdos that can only survive in MoFo and nowhere else on the Internet. :D

Re: IMDB Assimilation
Good question Matt, a couple weeks ago when it was announced that IMDB was closing i's discussion boards, I feared 100's and 100's of IMDB members would come here, swamping us. I figured most would be cool, but you know IMDB is where people went to bash other people, and I hate that.
So far my fears were unwarranted, as we haven't been swamped by tons of new users and they are getting along fine. Which reminds me of the Y2K panic at the turn of the millennium. |
I like it a lot. I've got my buds from IMDB here, I've got plenty of room to have actual discussions without people threatening to kill/doxx me, people actually LISTEN to me and take my points into consideration even if they don't always agree with them and, best of all, NO POSTING QUOTA! :D
I also love that this board is moderated and that what few fires almost started were quickly doused. It's still an adjustment period but I'm getting used to it. :) |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
You guys should try doing one of our movie commentaries. To really experience... the unlimited posting experience.
|
I would also like to add that I'm trying to shed some of that IMDB stain as I go along. People here aren't aggressive or confrontational but, because I'm so used to people attacking me, I'm still adjusting and sometimes take what people say around here the wrong way. I'm quickly learning, though, that every here seems to mean well.
As Dani and a couple others stated, it's a different culture around here. PS: I'm very happy to hear that several of you regs are enjoying us here. It makes me feel more comfortable here. I've even started branching out lately and posting in all sorts of different threads. I think we'll all do well here.:) |

We're talking name, address, DoB, facial pics, personal videos, links upon links of sites he goes to as himself instead of the Joby persona...as doxing goes, it wasn't pretty. It helps a large number of the trolls claimed to be making their own site, but there's no telling if they'll get bored trolling each other and start branching out, especially with some of them already having followed us here... |

For me it's overwhelming but exciting, especially since I haven't had much time lately. It is definitely a great thing that will just take a little getting used to.

Some times it's just better not knowing a pigeonhole age bracket, if you know what I mean.

No I don't care what age you are, I'm approaching my mid 50s and I'm happy to talk to anyone regardless of their age. I just said as much a couple post ago. I've found people in my own age group have some of the same memories about growing up and old TV shows and such so it's interesting to know if a poster is a male or female, where they are from, what general age range they are, etc. Sorry you were offended by my general question relating to age ranges. |

For what it's worth (not a lot admittedly) I like how the Mofo tree has gently and for the most part good-naturedly been shaken. Look at all the cool new features we have already .... things we most likely wouldn't have seen sight of until next month at least were it not for the 'influx' :)
|
I like this board a lot because of how very eclectic it is. The crowd and culture did not take any special adjustment for me. My adjustment to this forum was mostly of technical nature.
I was and still am surprised how much nicer people are on here. I really haven't seen anything close to the viciousness of some IMDB posters which is a really good thing. |

Re: IMDB Assimilation
Woah that's some pretty serious sour grapes.
|
Re: IMDB Assimilation
Don't believe that at all. Not just saying that because i love Lynch but c'mon he raped his daughter and had his friend killed and he decided to tell this to the person he told to kill himself?
Too bad, i love Michael on Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive and Carnivale. |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
If that really is from Michael and not a clone troll I wouldn't be surprised if he gets sued. Pretty damn stupid thing to put on social media. I thought Lynch's daughter's response was pretty decent in view of what was said.
|

I'd be surprised if a lawsuit against him was successful. |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
it does come across as very sarcastic, but I imagine it would depend on how much the gutter press ran with it and exploited it (although I'm not sure why those sewer rats arent sued more often.
|
Re: IMDB Assimilation
Is there no further context? What did he say before that? He obviously must have said something before that because he doesn't say Lynch once, he says "he" and noone would have known who he was talking about unless he had mentioned Lynch prior to it.
|
Re: IMDB Assimilation
It takes a really small man to lie like that.

Re: IMDB Assimilation
Yeah, MJA's facebook is also filled with anti-Semitic stuff, conspiracy theories and blaming of "Jews of Hollywood" for the fact he cannot find work.
Sherilyn Fenn is almost equally unbearable on twitter. |
Re: IMDB Assimilation
Oh good grief. Yep definitely sour grapes. Jew bashing and conspiracy theories - just shaking my head.

Re: IMDB Assimilation
The way Jennifer Lynch worded her response made me think she and her father must be aware of some mental or substance issues he has been going through. She worded her response by both denying his accusations and voicing concern. This is also somewhat old news back from Aug 2015. Apparently it was a salary dispute that created this.

I thought more about this assimilation theme early this morning. For me it's like a travel experience, just based on my own traipsing around the world. Some foreigners dive in as soon as they arrive, some stand back and watch before saying much, some locals are all welcoming, some get a bit nervous, some foreigners like to debrief in their expat community etc. Not just here, but established forums I have experienced over the years. |

Nope, not working today. Just dropping in for a bit. Heading out in an hour for dinner with the wife and a bit of evening shopping. She recently bought a prop-size Captain America shield and we're looking for those wall hooks that don't require nails. We're going to hang it on the wall. She's a major Captain America fan. What's funny is that I'm a bigger Iron Man fan and those two recently dueled. I want to eventually get an Iron Man prop for the wall and perhaps Thor's hammer. Odum's hammer and shield combo made me realize how great a combination the hammer and shield are. |

I need to get a shelf for Mjolnir, once I replaced the small tv I had to remove all that shelving to make room for the big one and it has nowhere to sit now besides on top of a cabinet off to the side and it looks better right underneath the shield... |

The IMDB discussions were OK, when looking for a fact. But the number of blatant and subtle trolls kept me distant. With IMDB it was "Get in, get info, get out."
