10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

This was something I would have liked to do last year for 2006 but never got around to it. I figured that I'd do it now for 2007 since that was quite a memorable movie year for me as well.

So yeah, the purpose of this thread is for all of us to share our fond film-related memories of 2007. Maybe you first saw your favorite film that year? Maybe you were a member of MoFo even back then and remember some interesting discussions? Whatever it is, post it here!

I was only 15/16 in 2007 so I really wasn't a massive movie fan but a casual one (certainly not big enough to want to join a movie forum :p) but I did see quite a few movies in the theater, the first one being 300 in March, which I was extremely hyped for after first seeing the trailer for it when I saw Saw 3 I believe. It definitely lived up to the hype and my 15 year old self thought it was so "bad-ass!"

The next month I went to see the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie with some friends at the mall and thought it was hilarious (that whole day was hilarious from what I remember) and then just a week or 2 later I saw Hot Fuzz, another hilarious movie! It was definitely my favorite theater-going month of the year. I saw a few others throughout the year such as Spider-Man 3, which had a lot of buzz and a lot of my friends were talking about it. Fantastic Four sequel, Harry Potter, The Simpsons Movie etc. None of them though could really compare to those movie from the beginning of the year.

Also, when a relic of the past called "BlockBuster" existed, I rented A Clockwork Orange and watched that for the first time. That was probably the first movie where I watched it from beginning to end and had no idea what the hell just happened. I also remember buying a Boondock Saints shirt where on the front it said "Kiss my ass. I'm Irish." and whenever I wore it in public I got quite a few odd looks when people walked by me.

Let's hear yours!

Ooh, I remember (as a ten year old) being confused about wether I liked Spider-Man 3 or not.

I was also obsessed with The Prestige then. Everyone hated me for how often I watched that.

Oh, and freaking out about the trailer for The Dark Knight.

I remember my friend and I deciding There Will Be Blood was better than No Country for Old Men. I stand by our agreement, even though I like the latter.

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

^ Dont know that there's a right or wrong answer there. I prefer TWBB. I think it's a perfect movie but then again, so is NCfOM.

I remember this quote: "There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece that grabs you by the throats and screams at you about its greatness. No Country taps you on the shoulder and whispers "I was pretty good, huh?""

Saunch 02-24-17 03:49 PM

Another movie I obsssed with: Jesse James. My favorite movie. First time I tried to analyze a movie and I'm glad it was that one.

Seeing that I was only 8 in 2007, I basically thought that Pixar was the best thing ever

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

^ that's another one. Ratatouille was the first movie I saw in a theatre twice.

Wow, what a carefree 37-years-old I was way back then!

This is a less interesting exercise for those of us who were already adults ten years ago and who were also members of this forum. I am not going to dig back through old posts until I find the 2007 crop, but they're there. Lots of 'em, I'm sure. I did find a year-end top ten list I made for 2007:

1. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
2. No Country for Old Men
3. Zodiac
4. Away from Her
5. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
6. Taxi to the Dark Side
7. The Savages
8. The Counterfeiters
9. Lars and the Real Girl
10. Margot at the Wedding

I still like my top five a lot, and I would keep them right where they are. I have been meaning to re-watch both The Savages and Margot at the Wedding. I have been thinking about both recently, in relation to Manchester by the Sea and also because by chance I re-watched most of Winter Passing on cable a couple weeks back and while OK I put it in a much lesser class than both The Savages and Margot. I didn't remember they both came out in the same year, but I have grouped them together in my head because of their subject matter and tone. So I may break those out this weekend.

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

Wow... 2007... that was the year I ended up homeless and lost everything I had, including my entire DVD collection.

I missed pretty much most movies released from March 07 to Feb 08 :(
At the time though, the movies for me were the 2006 movies as that was all I really had to fall back on for new releases... X-Men The Last Stand, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Mission: Impossible 3, Superman Returns plus all the other Hollywood garbage.
Pan's Labyrinth was a big deal, knocked me sideways. Rocky Balboa was decent, Silent Hill a decent video game adaption... The Lady In The Water was surprisingly good too, gets a lot of hate but I liked it.

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

Hmm, if I had to guess what my top ten of 2007 was at that time I bet it would have been...

1. Spider-Man 3
2. Transformers (I was ten)
3. Jesse James
4. The Simpsons Movie
5. 3:10 to Yuma
6. Hot Rod (a masterpiece)
7. Ratatouille
8. Balls of Fury
9. Hot Fuzz
10. Across the Universe

I believe I was a fresh faced college kid. First year in my Film & Television Production program.

As for films? I remember taking my wife (girlfriend at the time) to see two films, There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. She hated them both.

Here were my top ten back then. I think my line-up would be different now.

I still have some more to see though...:(

10. 1408

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/layden/1408.jpg

A refreshing and scary film that did not have to rely on gore.

9. HOT FUZZ

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...mon_pegg14.jpg

A perfect parody of action films that nailed everything right.

8. SUNSHINE

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../sunshine1.jpg

Beautiful and gripping. One of the most beautiful films of 2007

7. DARJEELING LIMITED

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...darjeeling.jpg

Just as off beat, heartfelt and colourful as every other Wes Anderson film. Where it lacks with plot it makes up for in style.

6. 300

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/layden/300c.jpg

An early favourite still makes it to the top ten. It's bad ass and a step towards the future in filmmaking.

5. RATATOUILLE

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/layden/rat.jpg

Best animated film of recent years. A perfect reason to buy a new Blu-Ray player.

4. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...n/country2.jpg

It didn't win best picture for nothing. Thrilling and chilling at the same time.

3. THERE WILL BE BLOOD

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...den/blood3.jpg

A performance for the ages with confident direction. The music alone makes it a top ten film.

2. JUNO

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...len_page31.jpg

This year's Little Miss Sunshine. It's funny, charming and depressing all in one.

1. GRINDHOUSE

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...en/planet3.jpg

Never have I ever had so much fun at the movies than I did with Grindhouse. The movie, the audience and myself were all in the same mode; high powered entertainment.

Sexy's Very Sexy Top 10 Films of 2007!
(complete with mini reviews)

Well, I didn't see everything that came out, but I did see enough. I'm sure there will be films of 2007 that I'll see later and think, gee, that should have been on my top 10 list! But here is my Top 10 list of films that I actually did see while living my sexy celebrity lifestyle in 2007.

10. Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Great movie with Dustin Hoffman and some woman who looks like a man. Enjoyable even for adults. Kermit the Frog makes a cameo. How can you hate that?

9. Hostel II
OK, yeah, so, totally far away from Mr. Magorium level here. Hostel II is a lot better than the first film. It's a sick, twisted movie, definitely not for everyone. But I cheered during its finale.

8. Hairspray
I think I like it even more than the original movie. John Travolta was perfect as Edna Turnblad - I don't care what other people say. What a fun, happy movie.

7. Live Free or Die Hard
What an enjoyable little summer movie this was. It got me into the Die Hard series - I have now seen them all. The first Die Hard is the best. This one is in second place.

6. Year of the Dog
I actually watched this for the first time last night! (OK, technically, that means I watched it in '08 instead of '07, going against what I wrote above, but so what) From Mike White, the writer of two of my favorite films, Chuck and Buck & The Good Girl, comes the story about a woman who becomes a vegan & a PETA member, along with crazy person, after her dog dies.

5. Sweeney Todd
Attend the tale! This was a great picture. However, I think Helena Bonham Carter lacked the energy and fun of whatshername from Murder She Wrote. Angela Lansbury! Yes. But we know she only got the part because she's Tim Burton's wife.

4. The Darjeeling Limited
This is utter fabulousness. Unfortunately, I saw it during the worst theatre experience of my life (review in this thread). Can't wait to own it on DVD.

3. Superbad
I already reviewed it here. It's a great film. It was actually better the first time I watched it than the second time though... it may actually deserve 4th place, with Darjeeling in 3rd, but I need to watch Darjeeling again to be sure. Still, I really enjoyed it.

2. Zodiac
A great movie. Unfortunately, people had to be murdered in real life for it to even exist. But, alas, it's still a fantastic flick from director ... god, I'm so forgetful (Hi, Alzheimer's) the guy who did Fight Club! David Fincher! There it is. It's a really long movie... but it sure did keep me interested and on the edge of my seat.

1. Death Proof
From "Grindhouse"! Actually, Grindhouse was a great theatre experience back in April. Originally, I liked Planet Terror more... but the Death Proof DVD has really bitten me. This is a terrific Quentin Tarantino movie. It deserves a full review from me sometime.

OK, well there you have it! I gotta go! YAY, 2008!

The thing that scares me is that many of the 2007 movies seem "recent", as in just a few years ago but it's been 10 ****ing years, anyone else feel like that?

Like say in 2001 for example, Lord of the Rings came out and a big movie from 10 years prior say Terminator 2 (91) seemed like it was ages and ages ago, nowadays it's like whhhaatttt that was 10 years ago.

I get reminded of big news stories thinking that was a couple of years ago and it was 2011.

Saunch 02-24-17 08:46 PM

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

Ten years ago still feels like the 90s, right? I've heard that from lots of people. Things move quicker nowadays.

Miss Vicky 02-24-17 08:49 PM

Of the 2007 movies that I actually saw in 2007, I loved Ratatouille, 3:10 to Yuma (both of which I saw multiple times in the theater) and Zodiac. And, to varying degrees, I liked Superbad, Knocked Up, Charlie Wilson's War, American Gangster, Enchanted, Juno, Shrek the Third, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. I hated No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Bee Movie, and Sweeney Todd.

I was 26 at the time and about two years away from joining MoFo.

I forgot American Gangster was 2007 as well. Incredible year.

Miss Vicky should see that Year of the Dog movie I liked then. From what I remember of it, I think she could relate to it. It's about a vet secretary who becomes overboard with saving the lives of dogs after hers dies. Peter Sarsgaard is in it.

I have seen it, but not until several years after it was released which is why I didn't include it.

I hated it.

No. I love Peter Sarsgaard and wanted to like it, but both central characters were irresponsible morons and I hated them and the movie. And your memory of what happened in the movie is flawed.

WARNING: "Year of the Dog" spoilers below
Molly Shannon's character lets her dog out one night and the dog goes into a neighbor's yard and eats snail bait. She finds him and rushes him to the vet, but it was too late. She blames the dog's death on her neighbor, even though it was her fault the dog got into the poison. If I recall correctly, she even later plans to kill her neighbor for revenge or else plans on doing something horrible to him, my memory's a little hazy on that point.

Sarsgaard's character is an employee of the vet's office where she takes her dog. Later he calls her and tells her he has a dog that needs a home. So he places an AGGRESSIVE German Shepherd with someone who has no experience with large dogs (and placing any aggressive animal in a home is a HUGE liability.) The dog bites her multiple times, but she persists in keeping it and trying to work with it, despite having no idea what the hell she's doing.

Then later the German Shepherd ends up killing one of Sarsgaard's character's dogs so he takes it to the shelter to be put down without her knowledge. Shannon's character finds out and rushes to the shelter but arrives too late and the dog is already dead. So she adopts as many dogs as she can from the shelter and takes them home, only to end up having them taken away and put to sleep when she realizes she can't deal with them.

Stupid, stupid, irritating, crap.

I know exactly what you're talking about. The 90s seem like forever ago while the late 2000s seem like yesterday, and many movies from '07 look like they could've been made today.

Also forgot to add seeing Transformers with my friends over the summer, I distinctly remember going to Burger King after and talking about how hot Megan Fox was in it.

I didn't see No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood til well after '07 but I think both are amazing. I do lean more towards No Country though, but I do need to re-watch TWBB.

Camo 02-24-17 10:08 PM

I was 14. I remember for some reason i went out of my way to see the Best Picture Nominees before the Oscars but some of those may have been in early 2008. Either way There Will Be Blood became one of my favourite film it still is and i didn't like No Country still don't. Also really liked Juno until i rewatched it about two years later. My top ten was probably:

01.There Will Be Blood
02.Superbad
03.Knocked Up
04.I Am Legend
05.Juno
06.The Simpsons Movie
07.Blades of Glory
08.The Bucket List
09.Halloween
10.Spider Man 3.

Don't like most of those anymore.

ShopkeeperTriumph 02-25-17 05:51 PM

2007, so I was 13 for most of the year. I wasn't into movies as much as I am now in 2007, 2008 was really the year I started to appreciate them a lot more. But, I had a lot of good memories. I remember seeing The Simpsons Movie opening night, being a hardcore fan as a teenager. I wore a Simpsons shirt, pajama pants, and slippers that resembled Homer's face. I remember the ticket guy saying something like "let me guess, the new Harry Potter movie?" I was rolling. I saw it with like 10+ friends, I don't think I've seen a more crowded movie theater, it was beautiful. I remember my friends and I were going to sneak into Walk Hard, but we ended up sneaking into Sweeney Todd instead, which was great, since I was really into Nightmare Before Christmas at the time, and Burton was starting to become a big name to me. I remember seeing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which I got bored of quickly, so I walked out of the theater, and saw Ratatouille instead, a decision I stand with to this day! I'm not sure if I saw Juno in 2007, or 2008, but I did see it during it's theatrical run, and I loved the hell out of it.

I remember my Mom calling me after she saw Superbad in theaters. "Don't watch it, it's too explicit!" Even though she never once restricted me from watching anything, I was watching South Park at probably age 5. I immediately watched it when it came out on DVD. She was for some reason really triggered by something in it initially. :p

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

Ah, the good old days. I started dating my wife in 2007, which meant watching far fewer movies, but I have a journal from then that shows I saw 33 in the theatre, which is high for me. Our town tried their hand at a film festival, where I saw films like Manda Bala (Send a Bullet) and Careless. I also got dragged to the cinema to see some real crap by the girlfriend and I saw 3:10 to Yuma with a friend and my brother, and when it ended I said more loudly than I intended "Are you kidding?" which quite annoyed my brother.

Anyhow at the time this would have been my favorites of the year:

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Chop Shop
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Atonement
The Darjeeling Limited
The Counterfeiters

Just noticed this. My brother in law got me into South Park as a kid, all my parents knew about it was that it was animated which i think was why they didn't bother finding out more thinking it was just a harmless kids show. Then one time when i was about 10 my brother in law bought me a video of it and my mum took one look at it and lost her mind because one of the episodes was called Cartman's Mom Is Still A Dirty Slut :rotfl:

jal90 02-27-17 09:02 AM

In 2007 I started to rate films. I wasn't much of a movie fan back then, but I had found out that classic stuff could be cool thanks to Chaplin and the Marx brothers, was a fan of Jim Carrey (the poor guy has gone nuts lately but hey, I'm still kind of) and Little Miss Sunshine was the best thing since sliced bread for me. Comedy was my favorite genre and my reaction to streaming or downloads would have been a "YOU CAN DO WHAT WITH THE COMPUTER??". I was having fun with the medium, but almost two years would pass before I started to actually watch movies regularly.

Good times.

Oh, my parents knew the material. My Dad was a fan, he even had South Park stickers around his garage. I remember he rented Bigger, Longer, and Uncut on pay per view, or something like that, and I specifically remember my Mom being like "nope, we're not watching any more of this" halfway through, and we just kept switching channels back, and forth to see if it got less explicit. They rented the South Park racing game for the N64 for me once, and I just kept naming off every single swear word used in the game immediately after playing it, they thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

haha. I don't remember a South Park racing game for the 64, don't think i was aware it existed. I do remember and loved at the time the South Park snowball throwing game for the N64. Looking back on it that game was garbage but it was the South Park characters so i had to love it, if i played it now i'd probably enjoy it purely for nostalgic reasons. The first time i got it was on one of my birthdays and it went missing that day, i was devastated haha. My parents bought me a new one right away but i've always wondered what happened to it.

Edit; Actually just looked that game up: South Park Rally and the cover is definitely familiar. Don't think i ever played it though or i at least didn't own it.

Oh yeah, none of the early South Park games are very good, Stone and Parker famously hate them. I do have a soft spot for the one you're referring to though. It's really repetitive, but it's stupid fun. The Stick of Truth is great, however.

I believe circa that years we often sneak to rent CD/DVD - right when someone smuggling a DVD player - ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) - and tv still provide sh*t without much censored - lot of "social commentaries" with my roommates xD even horror become a comedy movie lol

It's essentially an interactive season of South Park, they get the look down perfectly. Also, the fan service is astounding.

To keep it on topic while staying on South Park. 2007 was Season 11; still in the golden age for me (3-13). Top three from the season:

01.Guitar Queer-O (was obsessed with Guitar Hero at the time so this was amazing)
02.Imaginationland (three episodes telling the one story, there's some misses here and there but overall it's very well done)
03.With Apologies To Jesse Jackson (hilarious, love Randy)

Worst:

D-Yikes (this is still funny but Garrison episodes are hit and miss)

Off the top of my head: the year of There Will Be Blood, Juno, Zodiac, and Grindhouse. In some ways, it felt like a departure from the previous years. In a sense, the beginning of the current era. For better or worse.

Season 11 is pretty damn solid. With Apologies to Jesse Jackson is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series, I think it's some of the most sharp, unique, unapologetic commentary they've ever done on any subject, it might just be Randy's definitive episode. The only weak links I think are Lice Capades, and The List, they'd be pretty low if I ranked them all. I really like D-Yikes, but I almost always love episodes centered around Garrison.

I was 22 years old and I did not go to the movies as much as I do now. I recall going to the movies with my sister to watch Spider-Man 3 early in the morning and there were some kids laughing at inappropriate moments.

I went to see The Simpsons movie early in the morning and there was already a line. I was so exited to finally see one of my childhood TV shows on the big screen that I had to go early to see it! I saw it twice on the movie theater: Once English with Spanish subs and later with a neighbor in Spanish.

American Gangster I went to see it without even knowing the story behind it. I loved the movie, but I haven't seen it since.

Lice Capades is usually seen as one of the weakest episodes but i don't agree, i really love it. The absurd action movie lice story is amazing, sorry can't apologize "KELLAYYYY"!! Kenny getting blamed for the lice is hilarious too. I do agree with The List being one of the weakest though, probably has the least laughs in the season the only reason i have D-Yikes below it is that Garrison annoys me more in it. Actually WIth Apologies To Jesse Jackson is my favourite of the season too, somehow forgot about the Cartman and the dwarf subplot which while not as good as the main one elevates it. Cartman being able to beat the dwarf easily when it's built up as if he was about to learn a lesson was perfect. I'd go:

01.With Apologies To Jesse
02.Guitar Queer-O
03.Imaginationland (counting this as one of course)
04.Cartman Sucks
05.Le Petit Tourette
06.Lice Capades
07.Night of the Living Homeless
08.Fantastic Easter Special
09.The Snuke
10.More Crap
11.The List
12.D-Yikes

Re: 10 Years Ago: Your Movie Memories of 2007?

Unsurprisingly, my clearest movie memory of 2007 is Order of the Phoenix. The hype, the frenzy, the excitement. Even though it ended up being the weakest Harry Potter film in my book, the elation of going to the cinema for a Potter film is something I'd give a lot to relive.

I remember seeing 300 in 2007 around my birthday. I also remember seeing the same bus driver getting to uni, then to the cinema, and then getting home. I hate driving, so I let other people do it.
