Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I am not a big fan of all the Marvel and DC material flooding the market right now, but I would like to try to broaden my horizons a bit. I started a tv watchlist for superhero shows that I want to see, but I am looking to expand it a bit. Right now I only have five shows written down:
- Batman (1966) [I've seen a bunch of episodes, and I love the cheesy era of Batman] - Batman Beyond - The Tick (animated) - The Tick (live-action) - Heroes (Dunno how I'll feel about this one, but I know it got a lot of hype around its first season) I'm hoping to get some under-the-radar suggestions and maybe you can sell me on the high profile shows that are out now that I haven't really been interested in. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
Um.... err... uh....
They're making an Incredibles sequel? |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
Maybe I should have added "tv" before the series part :p

I don't really watch TV. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
Here's what I like that would probably qualify for what I am talking about:
- Batman (1966) - I haven't seen most of it yet, but I like what I've seen - One Punch Man - Dragon Ball Z (dunno if it really counts.) - Batman: The Animated Series - Frisky Dingo That's about it. I am probably going to try out more animated stuff than live-action for this, but I am hoping for something that surprises me. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
One Punch Man is hilarious.
There are lots of great Anime out there. |

Heroes WAS great... for the first few episodes... great premise, interesting story, then all of a sudden it just really started to suck. Won't say the character as that would be a spoiler, but this character died, then was brought back as a "twin".. then the twin was killed, then came back a third time as an unknown triplette. not even kidding. Even if you're not into Marvel films, there's several Marvel based Netflix shows that are oustanding. Luke Cage and Daredevil come to mind, that are connected to the films but very loosely, you don't really need any prior knowledge of the films to follow along, just catch some nods to the bigger universe. |
Whoa whoa whoa WHOA!
There is a superhero series which is Marvel, has character development, great acting, actual pacing to the storylines, and is ongoing. JiraffeJustin my friend, I am glad to be giving you this news :) Netflix Daredevil. Its gone on 2 seasons, and is mag-nif-e-cent! No more impulsive action, hell he didnt even start wearing a costume till the season 1 final. Charlie Cox (played Owen on Boardwalk Empire) plays Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D'Onofrio plays the Kingpin, Deborah Ann Wohl is Karen Page, Jon Bernthal is The Punisher, and Rosario Dawson appears occasionally. Shes the nurse that has to fix him up, as DD isnt like alot of superheroes. He takes a beating, alot. When the fight scenes do come, theyre built up properly, and are top tier choreography. |

I concur. The fight scene on the stairs is also shot really well.

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I wrote up a long list of the shows that I am at least somewhat interested in for some reason or another:
- The Flash (2014) - Arrow (2012) - Batman (1966) - Young Justice (2010) - The Flash (1990) - He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983)[?] - Wonder Woman (1975) - Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) - Justice League (2001) - Teen Titans (2003) - Spider-Man (1994) - The Batman (2004) - X-Men (1992) - The Lone Ranger (1949) - The Powerpuff Girls (1998) - ThunderCats (1985) - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) - Dragon Ball (1995) - Adventures of Superman (1952) - Batman Beyond (1999) - Gargoyles (1994) - The New Batman Adventures (1997) - The Transformers (1984) - Superman (1996) - Spawn (1997) - Axe Cop (2012) - Space Ghost Coast to Coast (1994) - Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008) - Wolverine and the X-Men (2008) - Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (2000) - The Green Hornet (1966) - The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008) - Beware the Batman (2013) - Darkwing Duck (1991) - The Tick (1994) - Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) - Freakazoid! (1995) - Danger Mouse (1981) - Super Friends (1973) - The Maxx (1995) - Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981) - Underdog (1964) - Spider-Man (1967) - Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) - The Brak Show (2000) - Hong Kong Phooey (1974) - Earthworm Jim (1995) - The New Adventures of Batman (1977) - Birdman (1967) - Ultraman: A Special Effects Fantasy Series (1966) - SuperFriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984) - The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show (1979) - Kamen Rider (1971) - The New Adventures of Zorro (1981) - Zorro (1957) - Daredevil (2015) - Inferno Cop (2012) - Luke Cage (2016) - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) - Jessica Jones (2015) - The Tick (2001) - Heroes (2006) Not very many of these shows inspire me to quickly seek them out, but a few them seem legitimately good. Others I am interested in out of morbid curiosity. Some of them are nostalgic choices I'd like to revisit. If you know my taste in movies or tv shows, hopefully you will be able to help me find some other superhero shows that are weird and better than those I have in my watchlist. |
I'd say try Misfits. Not your typical superhero show, but it's a pretty refreshing take on the genre.

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I see people mentioning the various Batman cartoons... yet nobody has yet said Batman: The Animated Series from 1992-1995.
It was that series that gave us both of the feature length animated movies too, The Mask Of Phantasm and Subzero... and... introduced us to Mark Hamill's Joker. Out of all the various series, it's the best one yet. I was considering getting the box set tbh at some point. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I'm already a big fan of TAS. If I made a list right now, it'd be my numero uno.
|
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I loved the series when I was a kid.
I was 10 when it came out and was blown away by how cool it looked. Manbat was my fave character. I had all the toys, vehicles, comics, everything. Plus, they use Elfman's music on it too from Burton's movies which made it even better :D |
- The Flash (2014) - Great first season, less good 2nd season. The 3rd season got all speedsters and their grandmothers. I lost interest.
- The Flash (1990) - loved that series [now is corny as hell] - He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983)[?] - so, so. - X-Men (1992) - good show - The Powerpuff Girls (1998) - I like the way they look so cute yet deliever all th blood and gore. - ThunderCats (1985) - excelent. - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) - so so - Dragon Ball (1995) - stopped a nation when it shown on tv. - The Transformers (1984) - G1 is the best. The animated movie is a kick in the face for the characters you liked. Everything else is rubbish imho - Spawn (1997) - dark and gritty - Darkwing Duck (1991) - funny - Danger Mouse (1981) - has a special kind of humor I nevr bonded with - Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) - pretty good. The worst part is that there are so ******* many episodes and sub.series it is baffling. - The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show (1979) - cool show - Jessica Jones (2015) - dark and gritty. - Heroes (2006) - so so. |
I was all about the Flash til about midway through season one when at the end of an amazing, event filled episode, they introduced time travel and undid everything great that happened. Every season the main villain has been another speedster, now everyone and their brother is a speedster to the point that the Flash is hardly unique on his own show...
Arrow started out great then eventually went the CW direction making everything about who was dating who. Ironically, Supergirl started on CBS with horrible effects, stories etc. (seriously, I stopped watching at the ep. with red tornado as it looked like VERY bad cosplay) now that it's moved to the CW, I tuned in to see their version of Superman on the season 2 premiere and CW of all people shelved the love story angle and started putting out decent shows. (And their version of Superman was great) Shame Brandon Routh is tied up with legends of tomorrow which I couldn't even get into, a solo Superman series with him would be great. |
I highly recommend the short-lived TV series "No Ordinary Family" starring Michael Chiklis. It only lasted one season, but it's definitely worth watching.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1591493/reference As for the TV show "Heroes", the first two seasons were great, but then there was a writers strike during season two, and the second half of the season was cancelled. When the show came back for season three, it was nowhere near as good as it was before the strike, and it just went downhill from there. It's worth watching the first two seasons, but seasons three and four are a waste of time. |

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I watched the trailer and several clips of The Flash (1990) series. I thought it would be pretty cheesy and while a level of cheese existed in what I watched, I was very surprised by how weird it looked, in a good way. It looked like the whole show took place on a soap opera set, but the effects were cool in a dated but less silly way than the modern Flash show where the effects already look bad but are presented as serious effects. It seems like a show where the negatives are actually positives because they add to the unique atmosphere. Hopefully the full episodes will retain that weirdness, because if they do I think I will have found a gem that is now somewhat hidden.

Well, Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man fit better the American understanding of superhero being about (mostly) males with supernatural powers. The two are some of the most entertaining stuff I ever watched. Mob Psycho 100 boasts some of the best animation ever for a TV show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViNH61DXLg8 And some very unique art style as well. While Flip Flappers is my favorite superhero show of the past 4-5 years. Though its basically like Utena mixed with Kaiba. Its more of an arthouse animation for anime buffs than a superhero show. Has some cool action scenes as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBE9wx_8sJA Almost as good as Mob Psycho 100. There are some good live action Japanese super hero shows as well like Kamen Raider and Ultraman (the last one is very popular among middle aged Brazilians). This is a list of 14 favorite Kamen Rider series of some guy on the internet: http://kamensentai.blogspot.com/2012...rider.html?m=1 And also, how could I forget, el classico: El Chapolin Colorado https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0_ac11Gc6Y That's not just parody, its CINEMA. |
Legion has been pretty interesting so far. I am not sure if I like it or not yet. At times it looks really cool and other times it seems like maybe it's trying a little too hard.

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
Not really a superhero series (but since many animated series have been mentioned)...
Samurai Jack. One of the most unusual and original animated action series about an ancient samurai who is transported to a crazy dystopian future. Each episode is self contained, but it follows the samurai's quest to return to his own time via a demon who has seized control of the future. A unique blend of stylized animation, action, martial arts, combat, science fiction and Eastern philosophy. Coincidentally - they've just announced an all new "Season 5" of the series to come out in March after a 13 year hiatus! |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I don't know if Jack qualifies, but it's a great show.

Not to be judged on any single episode as each one may have a different tone or feel. i.e. watch a few of them before deciding you don't like it since it may take a little while to grasp the true depth of it (and some of the episodes are just really weird!) ;) |

This scene in Legion is probably the best filmed scene I've ever witnessed in a superhero show. I might be sold.

http://kamensentai.blogspot.com/2012...rider.html?m=1 Problem imo for unfamiliar mature audiences(even for anime-associated with shonen), lot of it was catered toward young audiences so probably there some unusual tropes or clumsy thing like extensive use of "toy" , low rendered cgi eventho' its still maintain the practical effect trademark. I'll say kamen rider heisei era first from Kuuga-Agito-Ryuki-Faiz-Blade was pretty bit dark psychologically for kids show and was good starting point. Kabuto was mixed on that and hibiki I have no idea. Unfortunately Post kamen rider Den O onward I feel its more light and more kid friendly in comparison . There exception like special reboot kamen rider amazons, that turn to be more violence and gritty by it root, only the story and execution was always stay true on b-movie level grade |

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I just watched the webseries Judge Dredd: Superfiend; for the purposes of this thread, it will be considered a tv series. It was like something you would see on MTV in the 90's. It very much had that Liquid Television vibe. Having never read any Judge Dredd comics, I can't say how closely related to the books this was, but I can say that it makes me want to start reading them. Since seeing Dredd I've been intrigued by the character and the world, but like most things I get interested in, I just never explored it further. After seeing this short series, I really hope that I do read the books. Hopefully they will be similar to this series, because I enjoyed it a lot.
P.S. You can watch it on Youtube. It's only 28 minutes long. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I watched five episodes of Space Ghost Coast to Coast today. It's not a traditional superhero show, but it qualifies because Space Ghost is clearly a superhero. And because I make my own rules. I really enjoyed those episodes. I didn't realize how funny the show was.

Also, I forgot this one:
Samurai Flamenco https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...df883a4a31.jpg Satire of superheros like the movies KickAss and Super. I thought it was a smart but felt very inconsistent in terms of tone. Main character is a 25 year old who is a hardcore fan of shows like power rangers and decides to go fight crime. Eventually he becomes a "real superhero" and the show becomes really insane. |

Some updates:
I've watched five more episodes of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The humor in this show has continued to surprise me with how good it is. I never paid any real attention to this show before now, unfairly looking down on it and dismissing it as a "weird" show. It is weird, of course, but I was dumb for not liking weird stuff beforehand. The "interviews" are funny nearly every time, Zorak is hilarious (my favorite character), and Space Ghost's frequent lulls that include his internal monologues crack me up. These parts all work so well because the show is very sharply written. It's becoming a new favorite for me. I also watched a couple more episodes of Batman (sixties version) in the last couple days. I can't think of another show with this much charm. Love may cover over a multitude of sins, but charm covers nearly that many sins in this series. It's a campy, cheesy good time that's also quite funny. One of the episodes I watched was a Mr. Freeze episode. In Freeze's lair to indicate when one portion of the room was warm and the other portion was cold (50 below!) there would just be blue tint or red tint. And Batman tricked Mr. Freeze by wearing thermal underwear. Not making that up. Somehow his exposed facial parts were protected by this. I love this show. http://comicsalliance.com/files/2015/01/Batman091.jpg and this is what frozen Batman and Robin look like: https://channelsuperhero.files.wordp.../8-1.png?w=648 Then tonight, I somehow found an episode of El Chapulín Colorado with subs on youtube. I watched it right away, and I wasn't disappointed. It's very much an old-school sitcom with the old-school sitcom types of jokes. The thing is, they are pretty dadgum funny. I know they aren't for everybody, but I've always liked those type of jokes. An example of those jokes would be: during the early part of the episode I watched, a woman is trying to ask a man how he makes his living, but her question was similar to "how do you eat?" to which he responds "with my mouth", so then she alters her question to "how do you support yourself?" to which he says "with my legs". It's silly and not for everybody, but I am really bummed that I can't find more episodes with subtitles. |
I love the old "Batman" TV show with Adam West. I grew up watching it, so I like Batman when he's campy like that. There's also a Batman movie from that TV series. It has four villains, The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, and Catwoman. It's just as campy as the TV show, and it's so much better than the Batman movies from 1989 through the recent Nolan films.

Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I watched the first season and a couple episodes of Harvey Birdman and I was tremendously let down. It's just consistently unfunny, sadly. The concept of the show is a great one, but it's not a match with my sense of humor.
The Black Panther animated series of 2010 has a very cool animation style that is not animated all that well, but it might be intended to be a motion comic, so then it's well animated for a motion comic? But it instead finds itself in between motion comic and actual animation, so it's actually in no man's land. I also have a hard time buying into Wakanda remaining uncorrupted for so long, but I could suspend that disbelief for a good piece of art. I've seen about 8 or 9 episodes of Supergirl. I think the charm of the show might be wearing off a little bit now that they are establishing who the season-long villain will be. I enjoyed it more as a monster of the week type of show that still developed the characters and various storylines along the way. The cliches in the show, which is to say that almost every character you've seen a million times before, are also starting to weigh the show down. I really like the Supergirl character herself though. I really appreciate the effort into making her a flawed character, but not in a moral sense. She really does want to help the world, she just doesn't have a grasp on it. That's a good message to a lot of kids who want jump right into changing the world, but they haven't put the work into making themselves capable of that yet. I finished season 1 of The Punisher, and it was also peppered with cliches and cliched scenarios. However, I still really enjoyed it. I like the character of The Punisher, so almost anything I watch with him will have an extra half to full star just out of having my attention. This show is easily the most true to the character screen adaptation yet, and for that alone I appreciate this show. I watched the first two episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers kinda as a joke, but fully interested in how it was going to turn out. I had low expectations going in, but I enjoyed it as a silly camp experience. I don't think I could watch a full bazillion episode season of it, but it wasn't an awful experience. Rita Repulsa is the greatest character of all-time too. I had never heard of Apollo Gauntlet before, but I stumbled upon it somehow, don't even remember how. So, I checked out the first episode on youtube, and it was a fun, silly experience. The sense of humor is pretty unique to the show littered with out-of-the-box references to all sorts of pop culture things. If you like any of the Adult Swim type of shows or maybe Archer or something like that, you might wanna give this show a look. I'll be getting back to it once I clear up my schedule for an evening. And I watched a few episodes of Daredevil. Honestly I am not digging the choreography in the fight scenes, as it comes as pretty silly. I've seen the video of the hallway fight scene, and I remember enjoying that. It got me excited to check the series out, but as it is right now, it's letting me down a little bit. The story hasn't been all that interesting either. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
The Powerpuff girls ( original) blade 1 & 2
Johnny bravo ( he's a super hero sorta without being a super hero, just clumsy) For cheesiness maybe try the original wonder woman Show ( Lynda Carter) Hercules 1995 ? Kevin sorbo * |
If you're still doing this, I'd recommend The Venture Brothers (another Adult Swim staple). S1 is mostly one-off episodes but it slowly improves with season-long story arcs and cliffhangers.
GREAT humor and excellent writing once they find their voice acting timing. https://youtu.be/U_opDjElEug |

The 66 Batman was epic. But its only good enough as a kid. I tried watching it last month. But the novelty wore off pretty quickly. Other than the Nolan Batman, i cant even think of any other movie would barely cross 5/10. Although Logan as a standalone movie was decent.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is genuinely f*cking awesome. It's bonkers.

The only legit/cool/not shameful to like superhero films I can think of are:
Evil Brain From Outer Space The Heroic Trio Watchmen |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
Superhero tv-series I could, at least on some level, recommend are:
Powers (bit uneven but pretty good and slightly different, also plus for being quite bloody at times) Legion (pilot episode was godly, rest of the show hasn't lived up to that but still OK) -- All of the Netflix Marvel shows follow the same formula which gets kinda old. Jessica Jones season 1 is probably best of them (season 2 is way worse). Punisher is my favorite Marvel character but the show turned him into a growling caveman (no doubt to show how only totally bonkers dude can kill criminals). Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders are all pretty meh. JJ1 > DD2 (because of Punisher) > Pun > LC > JJ2 > DD1 > IF / Def Gotham's first season was OK and second started fine too but went downhill fast and the series hasn't recovered (stopped watching somewhere during second half of s3). S.H.I.E.L.D. started fine too but it got worse each season and I finally gave up on start of s5. |
Re: Recommend me superhero series that don't suck
I watched six more episodes of Harvey Birdman tonight. I was probably a little harsh when I said "consistently unfunny" and probably should have just said that it was inconsistently funny. It does have its moments, but I feel like it misses its mark more than it hits it.
