The Movie Forums Chain Challenge
Any suggestions, ideas, new members, and we all can make this a staple
We dont want to break the chain :) TONGO - Embrace Of The Serpent review Swan - Close Up Daniel M - Closet Land MonnoM - Doomed Megalopolis (1991) Omnizoa - Young Adult (2011) review Tugg - Four Lions (2010) review Camo - The Nanny (1965) review Citizen Rules - Samurai Rebellion Cricket - City Of Lost Children (1995) review TheUsualSuspect - Vagabond Redwell - Postman Blues TONGO - Dragon Tiger Gate (2006) review Omnizoa - Gen-X Cops CosmicRunaway - Society (1989) review re93animator - The Fear of 13 (2015) review Clazor - Kids (1995) review Topsy - Whatever Happened To Baby Jane Mistique - The Seven Samurai Nope - Martyrs The Sci-Fi Slob - Asylum Blackout MonnoM - Accion Mutante re93animator - Harakiri Camo - The World According To Garp TONGO - Howl (2015) Above The Clouds picks..... If the person is in Green, that means they've finished their movie and are eligible to be picked again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcawnRIyeok This is basically a chain-choose what they view exercise. No winners or losers, just participators. I state a posters name, and they tell me to watch a movie, and no matter what it is - I watch it. (No porn, nothing illegal.) The person that gave me the title to watch states another posters name, it cant be me - there is no revenge, and whoever the poster is tells them a movie to watch. Then the one that chose the film has to state a posters name, and see whatever that poster says, and so on. So whoever I call out gets to choose any movie for me to watch, Ill watch it, that person has to do the same thing I did, but cant choose me. This hopefully expands the exercise throughout the forum. Maybe we all can be deeper film fans from this :) Someone can say No and not participate if they dont want, thats perfectly fine. ;) I want the person to have a choice who is choosing for them, and it not be random or orderly like in a line, more personalized. Just pick someone, if they havent followed the thread then just PM them and ask if theyd pick a movie for you, and be willing to pick someone to choose one for them. If they want to, then its a go Swan, if youd be willing to go thru this too, please pick a movie for me to watch. :) A little explanation to the chain rules. Nobody can be selected again ntil they finish their movie. So like I cant be chosen again till I finish Embrace Of The Serpent (Swans pick for me). There ya go. Just after youre done announce it in thread, and give your opinion or review of the film. :) |
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Cool, I asked Swan in PM and he said he'd think of something.

Hmmm, no clue if you'll like it, I hope you do... but I'm going to continue the train of recommendation that started with Iro for a particular film. It's Embrace of the Serpent. Saw it recently and it was the most powerful film watching experience I've had in a while.
I want Minio to recommend a film! |

Good idea for a group activity Tongo:p Thumbs up to Swan for giving you an excellent movie choice. I haven't seen Embrace of the Serpent but I read the synopsis and it sounded good.

I'm intrigued. I like the rules.
Only problem I see is it depends on invite. |

I assume you can only pick from people who have posted in the thread (or people who agreed to participate), so if you're worried about being overlooked for a recommendation, that probably won't happen unless everyone decides they want in on this.

Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Oh, I thought you only singled out Swan to get the ball rolling because no one had posted in the thread. But that makes sense, and thanks for clarifying.

Adding my name to the thread. :p

Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Where's that ever elusive bear re93animator? If I'm going to ask for random recommendations I need to ease into this by asking someone who's resume I'm familiar with and often concur. I can't just jump in the pool head-on and risk ending up near Minio pissing in a corner (I hope that's just urine).

Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Another problem I see is this list of who's going to watch what building before anyone's even seen anything. The person who picked you should post their thoughts on the movie before you watch yours.

I am posting a review of the Embrace Of The Vampire as Im watching it, dont want to make it a requirement because less would want to get involved. As it is, still waiting for Dan to give Swan and name who will choose one for him. Momentum is key, right now, we have none :indifferent: |

Swan can watch Close-Up, seeing as I just watched it and loved it. I don't mind who picks one for me, MonnoM can, if he wants to.

MonnoM you pick a movie for Dan then someone to pick for you. :) |
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Have you seen Closet Land (1991)? If not I recommend that.
I'll wait to make sure I don't need to pick another one before saying who I want. Since re93 isn't on enough to do this. |

I'll wait to make sure I don't need to pick another one before saying who I want. Since re93 isn't on enough to do this. Im updating the Original Post as we go along. :) I am going to force myself to stop watching The Sopranos and finish Embrace Of The Serpent, which from what Ive seen is good. |
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
I do agree that after we watch it we leave at least a blurb saying if we liked it or not and why. I don't know if we should wait for that person to watch it first before moving on with the recommendations, because everyone's on a different time frame and it might slow things down too much.
|
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Daniel can let me know if he already saw Closet Land and I'll be sure to switch it. But I'm making my choice now with Omni. After that revelation thread I'm really curious what else you have up that sleeve.
|
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Sounds like an excellent way to watch movies you might not have otherwise. I'm game.

Omnizoa, youre up! Pick one for MonnoM then pick someone to choose for you. :) |
Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
Yo. Someone pick me please. If i know you, i'll try to come up with something i think would suit your tastes unless you ask for something outside your comfort zone like Swan did.
If not then what is the worst that could happen? |

Well, if it helps at all I'm in the mood for a psychological thriller. Or you could wing it, maybe choose something you think deserves more recognition in general. Just make sure I can actually find it. ;)

Re: The Movie Forums Challenge
I'll be watching it tomorrow (I'm not reading anything more about it as I don't want anything remotely spoiled) and letting you know my thoughts. I'm actually looking forward to watching it. The only Anime I've seen in my life would be Naruto and Elfen Lied. I actually liked both but never finished Naruto for some reason. I don't know why I never delved deeper in the Anime genre but I really should. Especially after reading your posts and seeing just how much variety there is.
|

Still waiting btw guys :(

20 minutes in.....
WARNING: spoilers below
Right away Im surprised that this 2015 movie is in Black & White. Ok.....and 5 minutes in I realize it was a stroke of genius due to budget constraints. B&W can hide what what everseeing HD color brings forth, and this low budget production now wont come off as cheap, the storytellings unhindered. The production companies responsible for this movies creation, they were all listed before the film, and they kept coming, and coming. Around a dozen. I immediately Google and find out "The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant." Ah, white scientist is dying and theyve come to a shaman who is the last of his tribe. Not only does he not like whites, but theres bad blood between the shaman & indian helping him there, different tribe prejudice, very Hatfield & McCoy. Creeepy credits with B&W slithering snakes. Ooook, theres a timeskip, and now the shaman many years older is approached by another young white scientist, wanting to ask about the events that transpired before. Young scientist seems to want to find the same plant the first one was needing many years before. I found this is a 40 year timeskip, the shaman much older doesnt remember where it is, but will go with him to find it. The old shaman says he has no memory now, and is hollow. Probably going senile, and he is horrified whats happening to himself. I moved this from the other thread. Jumping back into it now, will post as I go along. ;) |

40 minutes in.....
WARNING: spoilers below
Going back in time again, and Karamakate the shaman has brought the supposedly sick scientist, who I assume he "coked up" to a village that knows him. The shaman must be a big deal, his nickname is the World Mover. Well the scientist must be cured or something cause he and his guide are performing a song n dance for the villagers. The days before television..... Karam the shaman puts a tube up the scientists nose and must be blowing some powerful medicine....but effects must be temporary. I thought it was cocaine but he did it before he went to sleep too. Maybe it was a downer powder, poor guys gonna be strung out like Elvis! Oop! The happy villagers wanted to keep his compass as hes leaving for the morning. Scientist gave them a strong talking to. :yup: Karam is mad at him for acting so white. Scientist is toting so much stuff the guide & Karam think him nuts. Its funny cause 40 years i the future he was scolding the scientist then for hauling so much stuff too. Very well paced film. Ohp! Hes getting his nostril tube again. Damn these actors have heart, you can see it blow out of the guys other nostril. Theyve come to a graveyard in the amazon and the guide looks extremely shook up. Then he sees its the doing of rubber slavers. After trashing their setup, a one armed mutilated slave comes out of nowhere freaking out wanting to be killed. He almost does kill him cause he knows theyll torture him to death. The guide too was a rubber slave once. This is set in 1909, the timeskip goes forward 40 years, I looked it up. |
Young Karamakate
http://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/...doba.jpg?w=680 Old Karamakate http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/...2BQSoZO1nQI%3D 1 hour in....
WARNING: spoilers below
Uh oh. Karams gotta hair up his butt at the scientist, doesnt trust his true intention finding this root, and wont go. Now hes getting into that old pissing match with the guide who was a slave. Scientist is sticking up for himself & the guide, and giving it as good as hes getting in the argument. Hes showing his books, notes to Karam, reminds me of Dunbars notebook from Dances With Wolves. Karams impressed by a particular picture from the scientists dream, and is back onboard. Really fresh to have a bigoted shaman who is ornery, such is real life compared to movies. (This is based on true events)
Ah ha! Karamakate says he had the exact same dream as the scientist. He wants to have them both take something together. I feel like Im about to see a smartened up version of a scene from Altered States (great film). Scientist quickly throws it up, and Karams telling him to drink more  Hm. Morning time, nothing happened. Oook, Karams telling him he couldnt see/hear what he did, so hes gonna have to do something else now. Scientist reinforces hes dying from a disease, which is why he wants to find the root. Says the spirits say theres something other than his disease out to kill him, and that the Shaman should protect him. Ha, the two indians are laughing at the scientists romantic love letter. I guess Amazonian indians are manly men ;) Wow when something funny happens, Karam really loses his s#t laughing , too much isolation. Now theyve come to a more structured...place where theres some wooden structures, kids and a priest. Karams wary. The priest busts out a rifle thinking theyre looking for rubber, damn that rubbber must have been like Blood Diamond around there back then. Whhaaaaat?! Karamakate quoted scripture to the priest! Priest was stunned. Thats what broke the ice though, hes taking them in. Looks like an orphanage. Thats all Ill watch tonight, will pick it back up tomorrow. |
