Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
Hopefully this will be different enough not to seem repetitive – I just thought it was an interesting angle on the subject :).
I don't know mine off the top of my head but I thought 5 was a nice easy number for people to think up. |

Re: Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
One that really stands out above the rest would be from the show This is England '90 episode 3. When Lol tells her sister about being abused by their Dad. It felt like I was watching a real family. That scene destroyed me. I was beaten to a pulp and left blubbering in a corner. It was great.

I don't know mine off the top of my head but I thought 5 was a nice easy number for people to think up. |
1: Jeremy Brett in Sherlock Holmes
Having thought about it, Brett's genius performance kept coming to mind, so I'm happy to put him in number 1 spot. I often mention that what fascinates me is the precise control he showed over his expressions, which seems to be unrivalled. He's the definitive Holmes for good reason :p. |
1. Jenna Coleman in Doctor Who - Face The Raven
Purely for the way she delivers the line 'Let me be brave, let me be brave, let me be brave' when basically facing her death. 2. David Tennant in The End of Time Part 2. The regeneration scene still makes me cry. 3. Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables. People always go for Anne Hathaway but I thought Hugh Jackman was a fantastic Jean Valjean. His death was very emotional. 4. Kate McKinnon in Ghostbusters (2016). She was the highlight of the film for me. Wonderfully quirky. 5. Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. There's a reason why his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow is so iconic. He's very engaging to watch. |
2: Micha Bergese in The Company of Wolves
Particularly for my favourite ever film scene, where Rosaleen meets the Huntsman. This was just perfect casting, especially with Bergese bringing the physicality of a dancer to the character. He also does some great things in close-ups. |

Off the top of my head.......
1. Million dollar baby – Hilary Swank 2. Robert De Niro- Goodfellas, ( Honourable mention to his performances in) Raging Bull, Casino, Heat 3. Paul Newman-The verdict 4. Mel Gibson- Braveheart 5. Anthony Hopkins – Silence of the lambs Honorable mentions: Ian McClellan LOTR, Joe Pesci – Casino, Christian Bale – American Psycho, Samuel L Jackson – The hateful eight and a controversial one. His performance was perfect for the role, Arnold Schwarzenegger- T2. |
1. Robert De Niro - Taxi Driver
https://s9.postimg.org/pc87xewhr/IMG_7893.jpg I don't think anyone has captured the dread of loneliness so perfectly, along with the awful outcomes that follow once you let yourself sink in. 2. Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood https://s9.postimg.org/edwyf87wf/IMG_7894.jpg Absolutely titanic. Acting that shakes you the core. 3. Harry Dean Stanton - Paris, Texas https://s9.postimg.org/3sd3381kv/IMG_7895.jpg Another performance delving in loneliness, this one, however, is about picking oneself up again. Stanton is heartbreaking and has never, IMO, used his unique look to better effect. 4. Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds https://s9.postimg.org/ak3i62qkf/IMG_7896.jpg Even Quentin considers Landa his best character. Waltz is a terrible joy to behold. Charming, menacing and hilarious, often only a few frames from each other. 5. Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis https://s9.postimg.org/ufzhlm7lr/IMG_7897.jpg There aren't many characters with whom I've felt as close to as Llewyn. Isaac gives the a movie star making performance by making what would otherwise be a painfully selfish character endearing and providing us with some of the best vocals in movie music history. Guy deserved an Oscar for this. |
Re: Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
While good i don't think Waltz is as good in IB as everyone else does. Other than that though great choices, those four are all excellent.

1. David Thewlis - Naked

I forgot to include David Thewlis in mine, think he'd be my #2 or #3. Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie is a top three female performance for me. And you know how much Watsons character/performance and just the film in general kinda broke my brain . Think it has been long enough to watch it again and finally decide whether i love or hate it.

3: Lynda Steadman in Career Girls
Playing the same woman in her awkward college days and as a quite different person six years later. Out of all Mike Leigh's films I don't think this one gets talked about enough, or indeed at all :). |
4: Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Probably can sound like a cliché but he was so good and so memorable I had to put him in. I'm certain that if I hadn't known who was playing the Joker I wouldn't have recognized him. |

1. Anthony Hopkins - The Silence of the Lambs 2. Russell Crowe - Gladiator 3. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront 4. Kenneth Branagh - Henry V 5. Robin Williams - Good Will Hunting |
5: Laurence Olivier in Clash of the Titans
I like this one the more I think about it, just because of how clever his idea was to deliver Zeus's lines to mimic a thunderstorm. What I find interesting in retrospect is remembering Patrick Troughton in Jason and the Argonauts. When Phineas defies Zeus to make a deal with Jason there's the ominous rumble of thunder, and on the line "You grumble away all you like Zeus – I mean what I say" Troughton delivers it as a sarcastic, grumpy parody of the storm. It amuses me to think that Olivier probably saw the film and filed that away for future reference ;). |

Re: Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
Man I've been trying to think of a good list but it's kind of a mess, but here it is:
1. A tie between Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn and Sean Bean as Boromir (LotR) 2. Peter O'Toole as Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) 3. Edward Norton as Narrator (Fight Club) 4. Cary Elwes as Westley (The Princess Bride) 5. Al Pacino as Sonny Wortzik (Dog Day Afternoon) Honorable Mentions: Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates (Psycho), Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass (The Revenant), R. Lee Ermey as Sgt. Hartman (Full Metal Jacket) Edit: Of course I forgot an obvious one: Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink (Reservoir Dogs) |

Well I would say it was a not as serious and/or dramatic role as the other ones. Princess Bride itself isn't a very serious movie—but just like O'Toole as Lawrence or Ray Liotta as Henry Hill—I think that Elwes was truly born to play that role. |
1. Maggie Cheung - In the Mood for Love
Breaks my heart every time I see her in this. Defo the reason I'm not 100% gay 2. Emily Watson - Breaking The Waves Best thing about the film, should have won everything going that year. The "you cannot love words" and the scene where she's locked out her house were utterly amazing. This was like her first film as well. Love her 3. Meryl Streep - Sophie's Choice I can't believe Ursula Andress was offered the role first  this was Streep's best performance to me. 4. Cate Blanchett - Elizabeth I can't believe she lost to ******* Gwenyth Paltrow, she ain't even nice! Anyway, I thought she was utterly fantastic as a young girl who sacrifices her identity and interests in order to become one of Britain's finest monarchs. 5. Tony Leung - 2046 The development of his character from 'In the Mood for Love' was simply superb. |
Re: Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
I'm going to pick just one by each actor, otherwise Brando would fill it up.
1. Marlon Brando - On The Waterfront 2. Gena Rowlands - A Woman Under The Influence 3. Art Carney - Harry and Tonto 4. Stacy Keach - Fat City 5. Giulieta Masina - La Strada Honorable Mention: Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest |
1. Jim Carrey - Man On The Moon
2. Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight 3. William H. Macy - Fargo 4. Kevin Spacey - American Beauty 5. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump |

1 - Al Pacino - The Devil's Advocate
2 - Choi Min-sik - Oldboy 3 - Robert De Niro - Taxi Driver 4 - Leonardo Di Caprio - The Revenant 5 - Marlon Brando - The Godfather |
1) Di Caprio (What's eating Gilbert grape)
2) Redmayne (The theory of everything) 3) Nicholson (The shining) 4) Hanks (Captain Phillips) 5) Streep (Sophie's choice) |
1. Michael Caine in Sleuth (1972)
2. Laurence Olivier in Sleuth (1972) 3. Tatsuya Nakadai in Human Condition trilogy 4. Kang-ho Song in The Good, the Bad, the Weird 5. Graham Chapman in Life of Brian as Brian Cohen (he played two other characters, and they're hilarious, too, but he's awesome as Brian) |

Re: Your Top 5 Favourite Acting Performances
Hmm, I feel like I should rethink my top five from a page back.
Might be that I'm still high off Phoenix's work on The Master from yesterday's watch. Maybe I ought to give that "Top 50 performances of the 2010s" countdown a serious go. |
