Career Killers

Can anyone give an example of a performance that was so bad it was a career killer? Sometimes its bad enough to kill a career, but it doesnt. Sometimes it has nothing to do with a performance, but what theyve said or done.

I honestly wondered while watching The Happening if this film would kill Mark Wahlbergs career, and I think Mark was wondering that too.

Between the Daredevil movie and being attached to the Jennifer Lopez red carpet brigade, Ben Afflecks career was almost killed completely.

It didn't kill his career but it did give him cancer.

Ryan O'Neal was a hot commodity until Oliver's Story, the disastrous sequel to the hit Love Story.

Burt Reynolds at one time might have been the biggest movie star in the world. He was already on a slight downturn, but when he paired with Clint Eastwood on the huge flop City Heat, that was pretty much the end. He would get a comeback role in Boogie Nights.

Stating Alive, the awful sequel to Saturday Night Fever, was the beginning of the end for John Travolta. He would then make one of the greatest comebacks thanks to Quentin Tarantino and Pulp Fiction.

Didn't his movies start to lose money when the western's were gone even if i liked MCQ?

Sean Young's attempt to get a role in Batman Returns destroyed her respectability and her career completely.

Brigitte Nielsen's divorce to Stallone in 87 wrecked her acting career entirely.

Mike Myers in The Love Guru. All he's really done since is Shrek spin offs.

Isn't that the newer Star Wars movies? I haven't watched them, but I still believe that's it.

Yes it is. Shame on them for stealing it.

Also, I love when Mark Wahlberg talked to the plant. I thought it was funny. I'm goofy that way. :p

Catwoman didn't kill Halle Berry's career, but it did kill director Pitof's career. One and done.

She also starred in two seasons of Extant, produced by Steven Spielberg.

She has a film in post-production, Kidnap, and one in pre-production, Silence. And, she will also co-star in the Kingsman sequel coming out next year.

She also reportedly earns $10-15 million per movie.

For directors: Fantastic Four (2015) for Josh Trank.

CiCi 06-08-16 10:59 PM

She was an unknown anyway, but back in the 90s, Maria Ford was the biggest B movie actress.

In 1998, she agreed to be one of the main contributors to a documentary about the B movie industry called Some Nudity Required and she basically slagged off everyone she had worked with, which was quite sad to watch because she seemed almost traumatised. Anyway, no one would touch her with a barge pole after this was released, and she didn't have the ability to shift into A movies. Apparently she was in talks to appear in Grindhouse but she got a lot of plastic surgery and she looks awful now so that never materialised into anything

Which is unfortunate b/c she was great in it. Showgirls is one of the most underrated and misunderstood films in recent memory.

Re: Career Killers

Brandon Routh: Superman Returns.

Sean Connery: The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Terrence Howard: Iron Man.
Although, it wasn't the film, it was his own ego. He demanded more money (about $10m apparently) after the filmmakers said his role was going to be cut down... and he accused RDJ of "taking my [his] money"... so they simply fired him and replaced him with Don Cheadle who worked for a fee of just $1m. Since then he's done bugger all, but he was ok in Prisoners, albeit with a small role in the film.

Kevin Costner: Waterworld (although I like the movie :D )

John Travolta: Battlefield Earth. After Tarantino fixed his career, Travolta began ruining it again with stuff like Face/Off, and then he went full-retard with B.E.

I know it has been re-evaluated in recent years as an allegory about Hollywood, or a serious satire of the star-is-born tale. But, I'm still not a fan.

Face/Off is easily one of his best films.

Don't think that counts since it's got nothing to do with her actually playing a role, but if we're counting stuff like that then Clint Eastwood killed Sondra Locke's career after they broke up.

Wahlberg did a plethora of career killing films before The Happening and he's still standing...the guy is indestructible. The guy has too much juice in Hollywood and as long he keeps that six pack and those biceps in working condition, this career cannot be killed.

I think what saved his career was producing Entourage. At the very least it kept him in the loop of Hollywood, and from fading away.

Clint Eastwood WAS Sondra Lockes career. He used her in every movie he made to where they joked about it. I honestly cant remember seeing her in anything other than an Eastwood project.

Alba was Fantastic Four.

Fox was her own mouth. She said in an interview that her and a friend went to see the 2nd Transformers movie, which she was in, and left halfway thru because it was a bunch of noise. Michael Bay wont work with her now. I wish a studio would make that same decision regarding him.

Eddie Murphy's career dies many times over between the likes of Pluto Nash, Meet Dave, The Haunted Mansion, and Daddy Day Care, and Norbit

Cuba Gooding Jr's career died with Boat Trip. Now he is strictly direct to DVD.

He worked with her on TMNT, so they must have reconciled to some extent.
But she said she was going to reduce her workload to one film per year after she became a mother. That being said, she'll probably end up in indie films and guest appearances before too long.

No argument regarding Routh or Howard...what was Howard thinking accepting one of the most thankless roles I have ever seen in a movie? I don't know why he even wanted to be involved in the rest of the franchise.

I really like Showgirls. It isn't a good movie but it is a lot of fun. And yeah the pool sex scene is probably the worst and most ridiculous of all time.

Re: Career Killers

I guess, I don't understand what is meant when you say 'career killers,' because a lot of the actors mentioned so far have gone on to have success later in their careers. :confusedwhite:

Cuba Gooding, Jr. went on to star in a number of films after Boat Trip, the most notable being American Gangster, Lee Daniel's The Butler, and Selma. He also just played the titular character in the highly acclaimed and immensely popular People vs O. J. Simpson TV series.

Terrence Howard went on to star in several movies, as well. But, he found huge success in playing Lucious Lions on Fox's Empire, and a smaller audience in Wayward Pines. Although, I don't care for him, personally.

And, Uma Thurman went on to star in her biggest and bestest role ever in Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 after Batman & Robin. She hasn't found much success recently. But, she was superb in Von Trier's Nymphomaniac in 2013.

Ange1e4e5 06-09-16 09:32 PM

Re: Career Killers

Hence why I said almost for Uma Thurman.

Camo 06-09-16 09:40 PM

I hate everything about those films including Uma. I've really liked everything else i've seen of Von Trier but i think Nymphomaniac may be my second least favourite film(s) of this decade after Minions.

cricket 06-09-16 09:43 PM

I think for Uma Thurman, she's about at the age when actresses stop getting high quality roles consistently. Once the looks start to go, it seem that only the girls who can really act continue to be in the spotlight. It's too bad.
