Lifelong Leafs fan here, and boy has it been painful.

I've also played hockey at the highest level in Canada all my life, but quit a year before it was time for my age group to be drafted to the junior teams.

hahahaha I know your feeling :p

I'm a Habs fan and we lost 8 of our 10 last games.....

Leafs have pretty good young players tho! Marner, Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Kasperi Kapanen ,etc.

I'm a Vancouver Canucks fan!

I'm not as big of a hockey fan as I was a couple years ago. Back then I was really into hockey, watching it whenever it was on and looking up all the scores every night and whatnot. I do still watch it from time to time.

Just a random thought: I'd be really surprised if Patrick Kane doesn't get the Hart trophy. He's had a phenomenal season so far.

Patrick Kane as by far the best hand of the NHL! This guy is a just a total beast.

I like Vancouver! I miss Brandon Prust here in Montreal :(

I think Nashville got the better end of the deal. Both are signed long term, and their cap hits are nearly identical. Subban is a few years younger, which likely means he will remain in his prime longer than Weber with the Canadiens.

Staying in Tampa is better than him joining the Canadiens, Sabres, or Red Wings. So there's that. :)

that's what everybody said about Nicklas Lidström and Scott Niedermayer... and Lidstrom win a Norris at 40 years old :p I don't say that Subban wasn't a good defenseman he was pretty good but he has a lot of turnovers and he was a distraction in the room. Weber is a leader and he won 2 gold medal with the Canada and also he's way better defensively than Subban. I do really think that we are better with this trade as a team and I'm way more confident for next season. The only thing we missing is another Top 6 Forward and we probably gonna sign one in the UFA.

I don't know why Pittsburgh made this out to be such a heinous crime. Anyone who follows college hockey, specially some of the Ivy league schools that have rivalries with other schools, knows this isn't something new. Specifically, the throwing of fish isn't. Pittsburgh fans just look for any reason to bitch and showcase their bandwagon knowledge of the game.

Seems like literally every fan base accuses every other fan base of being on the "bandwagon" when they win. Kinda like how every team thinks they get away with fewer penalties than average.

Anyway, I don't know about "heinous crime," but you don't need to be ignorant of the various fish-tossing traditions to find them gross, or silly. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that should be thrown on the ice are hats.

I love to watch hockey. Fans throwing crap on the ice isn't a part of the game. I also hate the fans that stand up, turn around and wave at the camera, people pounding on the glass, green men, banners, and noise making devices.

Pens seem to have regained their footing after a pretty rough start (which I was very much expecting; I'll bet they're exhausted after two long, grueling playoffs in a row). Four straight wins, with 19 goals over that stretch.

Still pretty worried about how they'll hold up in a few more months, since any stamina issues would figure to materialize more then, but we'll see.

Re: Hockey Talk: NHL Thread and stuff

Pens seem to have righted the ship a bit, but I still think fatigue, after two long, hard-fought Cup runs, is playing a huge role and is going to be ridiculously hard to overcome. Small price to pay, but a price nonetheless.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights are in first. What the what.

Yeah, gotta imagine they'll fade a little down the stretch. But what a ride. Happy for them, and (obviously) for Fleury.

Speaking of which, he returned to Pittsburgh last night:

https://twitter.com/penguins/status/961041569544630272
Good stuff. Good on ya', Flower.

Pens won, and they're second in the division. Tied for the second-best futures odds on the Stanley Cup, too. Think they've pretty much righted the ship after that sluggish start. Couple fans I know think maybe Sullivan sorta let everyone take it easy in the first half, which I don't have a huge problem believing under the circumstances. I do think there could still be a fatigue issue, and hell, it's just really hard to sustain a high level of success in any league, but they look pretty formidable again. Kinda nuts to think a third consecutive Cup is even remotely in play, but it is. Go Pens!

The Olympic hockey was competitive, but inferior without NHLers. I blame NBC's crap coverage going back to Vancouver and The International Olympic Committee for this.

Congratulations to the artists formally known as Russia for their gold medal win.

Loner 03-03-18 10:16 PM

Looks like will get an NHL team in Seattle!

OVG opens waitlist after Seattle puts down 33,000 deposits for NHL season tickets

As for the NBA, suck your Sonics! In the Mid-Nineties when they renovated The Coliseum they deliberately off set the ice.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ena-hockey.jpg

This was done so they wouldn't have to compete with an NHL team.

Ten years later the owner of The Sonics, Clay Bennett, stated that it wasn't adequate for The NBA and moved them. You can keep The Thunder, The NBA, TV timeouts, fake calls, fake refs, no defense, crap product.

Still going to be a Kings fan. Hope they name them The Sockeyes.

Final score, 5-2 Pens. He was kinda close?

Yoda 03-22-18 12:47 PM

So, I see a headline that Crosby scored a goal by whacking a puck in mid-air. Pretty cool, but I've seen those. They happen every so often. He's done it a few times, I think.

Actually sit down to watch, turns out he redirected it in mid air around the goalie, then hit it again, still in mid-air, into the goal.

The Knights got the first win of the Stanley Cup Finals! Things are looking good. I know our defense is going to improve, so if Washington wants to stay in this they better step up their defense too.

This is very exciting. I live in Las Vegas, so this is our first professional team, and it's amazing how the city has embraced them. And this is our team. I'm less than crazy about the idea of the Raiders coming here, and for me it won't feel as important, because we're basically stealing a team from another city, and so many of the people who live here came from elsewhere and already have a favorite team. I'm sure we'll embrace them too, but I don't care so much.

Knights have really surprised me (Caps too, btw). I didn't watch their games in regular season but in playoffs they've been, in my opinion, the most consistent team.

I totally understand why they were underestimated before the season and to some extent even before the playoffs (in my bracket I had them lose on the first round) but what really astounds me is that many "experts" are still doing that. Like the biggest Finnish hockey site has had a column after each round that their next opponent will expose them and they don't stand a chance. I kinda hope that Ovechkin gets his ring (I have no feelings towards either team but the best goal scorer of the era deserves it) but in my mind Knights are favorite to win.

First game was really entertaining too.

Loner 06-09-18 05:26 PM

Congratulations to The Washington Capitals and their long suffering fans on winning The Cup.

https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018...y=90&auto=webp

Especially Alex Ovechkin and Barry Trotz.

From a Seattle perspective, a lot of positives came out of this season. Seattle will likely get a NHL franchise with the same deal as Vegas. Despite what the media keeps repeating, T.J.Oshie is not from Warroad, Minnesota. He is originally from Mount Vernon, Washington and played in the Seattle Junior Hockey Association for ten years.

As if the 2019-2020 season couldn't be anymore bizarre.

Seattle's rebuilt building will be renamed Climate Pledge Arena. What da fu? Still haven't got a name for their team yet.

The NHL lottery ended without knowing who has the number one pick.I'm sure Senators and Red Wings fans are overjoyed by this farce. Which means some playoff team will get the first pick after another lottery.

Loner 07-10-20 09:32 PM

Big NHL day!

Players and owners agree to a four year deal that includes a probable return to The Olympics!

The playoffs will start on August first in Edmonton and Toronto with up to six games a day!

If you're not fan of the sport or not familiar with it, now would be a good time to check it out.

The Seattle franchise, really benefited by waiting a year. Things will hopefully get back to normal, and it gives them time to straighten out any problems with the renovated arena.

Congratulations Ranger's fans on getting the first pick in The Draft. A pick that will certainly be Alexis Lafreniere.

Biggest loser, The Toronto Maple Leafs. Haven't won The Cup since 1967 and didn't get the first pick so The Carolina Hurricanes get their first round slot. Also the salary cap didn't go up and more than 40% of that money goes to three players.

So what do they do? Try to trade John Tavares or Mitch Marner? Then what? They couldn't make it through the qualifying round with the team they have now against a beat up Columbus Blue Jackets.

Tampa Bay vs St Louis for the Cup.

I know Philly is the hot team right now, but...it’s Philly.

I got Philly playing Vegas, but I'm never right. I thought New Jersey would kick ass this year and look at them.

I typically stay away from the #1 seeds on the playoffs. Who knows, though?

Congratulations to The Tampa Bay Lightning and their fans on winning The Stanley Cup...

...Really bizarre and sad ending. I'm sure everybody will be happy to go home.

I was rooting for Dallas due to a bunch of Finns in the team, but can't disagree about the better team winning. At least Tampa plays an entertaining game.

You're Finnish? My favorite Fin is Jari Kurri.

There was a Finnish exchange student that lived across the street from me. His favorite player was Kurri. He use to come over and watch hockey on the Canadian channel CBC, when The Kings made their run in the 1993 season.

Bumping this thread to say the Penguins scored 11 goals tonight.

Haha Penguins have looked good lately. Curious to see if Calgary can stay hot against Colorado tonight

Didn't mean to type Calgary (not sure where I was looking)....meant to type Minnesota, especially after getting Fleury. Should be interesting to see if they can make noise in the playoffs

This hockey season is already impressive with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl reaching 100 points. Along with the fact that the Rangers (my local team) are already stupendous playoff contenders.

The Rangers do look very strong at times, but they seem too inconsistent. I'm hoping Vegas can make a run for the last wild card spot

Yeah, they're not the best playoff contenders, but I feel like they'll do better in the next decade or so.

Rangers lose game 1....Go Blues! haha I'm curious to see if Florida can shake off that Game 1 loss

I have to admit I'm more excited about this NHL season than I am about the NBA. Still learning a lot about hockey, but it does so much right when other sports seem to do so many things wrong

We finally have a hockey team here again, since "The Captain" came home and is running the show in Detroit.

Blues took their first L last night, but I might be able to get tickets this Saturday to their game :) First NHL game ever for me
