For coming-of-age, self discovery, purpose, differences between generations, society and the technology dehumanization, universal humanistic themes, watch "Harry and Tonto" - I've never met anyone who didn't love it, the problem is most people I know never saw it..
If I could, I'd burn you a copy, and walk it over. |

I'll second Harry and Tonto. Good film!

Re: Funny Face Movie Index
Have you seen the 1966 Batman movie? I highly recommend it, it's a great film. Not an awesomely bad horror but an awesomely bad picture overall. You okay with that right?
|
Re: Funny Face Movie Index
I like the '66 Batman film. Not as much as Batman Returns, but I still like it.
As you like Bill Murray, I'd ask if you've seen Mad Dog And Glory? I like that film and it seems to be one of his lesser seen films. |
Yes, I have seen the 1966 Batman. Had a history teacher in high school that made us give a presentation on a topic of our choosing that was related to the 60s. Talked for half an hour about Batman. Huge portion of our grade and I got a perfect score.
Mad Dog and Glory is one that I haven't seen. Started it once but had to leave before it finished. I like De Niro too so I'll eventually get to finishing it. :) |
Re: Funny Face Movie Index
DId you use this clip in your presentation? Pretty sure it blew everyone's minds ;)

I recommend EVERY MOVIE EVER.
|
I think I did show the shark scene! And a scene with the villains to show the camera angles, because they were crooked. ;) Fun movie.
https://derricklferguson.files.wordp...ins.png?w=1000 Gats, I recommend reading Burt Ward's autobiography: http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386925033l/196276.jpg |
Hey Funny Face! Nice to see that you have your own movie thread:) I'd make a recommendation but I don't know what films you have liked?

The story starts with the main character Dulce, regaining consciousness with a gash on her face and surrounded by shards of broken mirror. After stumbling around the house she finds her husband, stabbed to death, and sees her son standing in a doorway only to be snatched away into darkness. With no one else in the house, Dulce is charged and convicted of murder. After thirty years in prison, Dulce is now an old woman and allowed to serve the rest of her time under house arrest. Her only visitor is the local priest who welcomes her back into the community and confesses that he does not believe she is guilty. Together, they both hope to find out what actually happened. The story lags and gets fragmented between flashbacks that reveal more about the days leading up to the murder-disappearance and watching the priest dig up the mysterious history of the house and previous inhabitants. Last third of the movie is the most interesting and hard to describe without spoilers but it shifts from haunted house into something else. Still had unanswered questions in the end but ties up nicely. Tugs on your heartstrings but overdoes it a touch with the sentimental conclusion. Wished there was a little more backstory with Dulce and her old age makeup was better. Overall, the holes in the story are hard ignore but I liked where it was going. 6/10 |

Some favorites of mine are: Stranger Than Fiction, Big Fish, Bagdad Cafe, Edward Scissorhands, Safety Not Guaranteed, and Like Water for Chocolate. |

Dum Laga Ke Haisha (Sharat Katariya, 2015) Pram gets pressured into an arranged marriage with Sandaya, an educated girl who is overweight. Ends with the couple being challenged to compete in a wife-carrying contest. Lots of scenes I didn't care for, mostly with Pram sulking and insulting Sandaya but he wasn't so bad in the last thirty minutes. Okay as a one-time watch. 6/10 http://www.thesirenscove.com/big-blue-divider-hi-10.png http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/photo/48485103.cms Piku (Shoojit Sircar, 2015) Storyline is both ridiculous and realistic. Piku (Deepika Padukone) is juggling her own needs and taking care of her aging father who lives with her in Delhi. Her father decides he wants to move back to his family home in Kolkatta but refuses to fly and insists on getting a driver to take them. The family uses a taxi service but all drivers refuse to take Piku with her well known short temper and the owner, Rana (Irrfan Khan), ends up driving the family himself. Road trip and constant talk of bowel movements throughout the entire film. Loved it. As much as the family bickered- very obvious how much they love each other. I think a lot of people can relate. Music was also lovely. And Irrfan Khan makes me swoon a bit. http://www.webmallindia.com/img/film...ueenfront1.jpg Queen (Vikas Bahl, 2013) Netflix recommendation based on the two previous films. Rani gets dumped two days before her wedding and decides to go on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam by herself. Fun start but lags a lot. Felt like a made for TV movie. Loved the music. Favorite song was London Thumakda: |

Lava (James Ford Murphy, 2014) New work schedule has been keeping me busy these days but I've been promising JayDee I'd post something. Work in administration for a mental health provider and nanny part time. Covered reception lunch break today and Lava was playing in the waiting room. Watched this several times now and still occasionally tear up. Such a sweet song that makes me smile and feel warm and fuzzy each time I hear it. Recently started to play ukulele and love to wake up the kiddos with music. Lava was the third song I learned on uke. for my favorite Pixar short. See JayDee- a special post for you! |
Re: Funny Face Movie Index
Uh, no, Lava is hardly the best Pixar short, but +1 anyways for the enthusiasm and personal story. :)

I actually just watched Lava for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Thought it was very sweet, if a little odd, but certainly don't think I'd have it as being one of Pixar's best shorts. I'd need to watch through them again before I could pick a favourite but I remember Day and Night being wonderfully creative. For the Birds is one of their simpler efforts but really fun. Blue Umbrella was rather lovely. Oh and Presto was pretty much perfect. That's probably my favourite actually. That was close to being a five minute masterpiece. Anyway great to see you back. Looking forward to more |
I haven't seen Lava yet, but my favorite Pixar shorts are:
1) Day & Night 2) La Luna 3) Knick Knack 4) For the Birds 5) Presto |
Re: Funny Face Movie Index
I think Geri's Game is a Pixar Short that needs more love. It's one of my favs.
Btw, good list GBG. |

My favorite Pixar short will probably always be Knick Knack. That angry little snowman cracks me up. I had him as my first avatar here, actually. I also love Partly Cloudy, For the Birds, Presto, Lifted and Tin Toy. |

The Beauty Inside (Jong-Yeol Baek, 2015) Woo-jin wakes up every day in a different body. He starts to visit the girl who works at the furniture store, E-soo, who always thinks he is a new customer. After some time (and waking young and attractive), he asks E-soo out on a date and stays up for three days to spend time with her in the same body and to avoid having to explain his transformations. Woo-jin falls asleep just before his last planned breakfast date with E-soo and leaves her waiting as he watches on in his new body. Both can't stop thinking about each other and Woo-jin decides to tell E-soo the truth about his appearance. Have not read the book this is based on or watched the mini-series but loved this movie. Lovely characters, beautiful score and typical type of story that would appeal to me. |

http://www.dvdsreleasedates.com/post...vie-poster.jpg The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 (Francis Lawrence, 2015) As a fan of the books, I was excited to watch all of the movies. Understandably, a fair amount of book details were left out but did not care for the little changes made to the movie plot that skewed the story. Would have preferred to have longer movies for character and story development. Looking at book to film adaptations like Harry Potter, I think Hunger Games could have been better. 6/10 |
Weren't those films long enough? I don't mean because I didn't like them, I've not seen them, but they're all pretty much standard blockbuster length, aren't they? If you can't make a 4 part movie series from a 3 part book series at less than 2 1/2 each, then maybe everyone should've just gone and watched Battle Royale. ;)
|
I haven't seen any of those, would like to at least try the first.

The Nice Guys (Shane Black, 2016) Interesting movie. Not a huge Russell Crowe (or Joaquin Phoenix) fan but Miss Vicky is and usually end up watching their newer movies with her. Had a some slow moments but overall enjoyable. Also reminded me of Inherent Vice. The Age of Adaline (Lee Toland Krieger, 2015) I'll give any movie with Harrison Ford a watch. Liked The Age of Adaline but mostly because of Harrison and the moments with Adaline and her daughter (Ellen Burstyn). Favorite part was the film score: |
So how does Miss Vicky behave at the movies? She tell people off and put them in their place?

Princess Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki, 1997) Prince Ashitaka kills a demon to protect his village but is cursed by the demon before it dies. We learn that the demon was once Nago, a giant boar god that had been transformed by pain and hate. The village wise woman tells Ashitaka the curse will eventually kill him and advises him to travel to where Nago came from and see "with eyes unclouded by hate," and possibly find a way to lift the curse. Ashitaka travels to Irontown and lands in the middle of a war between Lady Ebosihi, who is destroying the forest for natural resources, and the Forest Gods protecting the land. Absolutely beautiful to watch. Amazing scenes, characters and engaging story. Not sure why it has taken me so long to watch this but glad I finally did. |

The Natural
(Barry Levinson, 1984) http://media2.cardboardconnection.co...bs-213x300.jpg http://media2.cardboardconnection.co...r1-215x300.jpg Up until now, The Sandlot was one of the few sports-related movies I enjoy. Baseball was never a favorite, mainly because of unpleasant experiences at games but wanted to give The Natural a watch after reading nostro's review. Ended up liking this movie a lot. Roy Hobbs and his love for baseball, his grumpy coach, and his childhood friend, Iris, were my favorite characters. The only piece that didn't completely work for me was Barbara Hershey's character- but liked the overall story so much I'd like to read the book at some point. Also, score is lovely and I've heard the main theme several times but had no idea it was from this film. I see myself giving this a re-watch as some point. Thanks nostro! 8/10 *** In the Mood for Love (Kar Wai Wong, 2000) Been looking at various MoFo's favorites and saw this on christine's top 10. Every detail of this movie is beautiful. The cinematography, and beautiful colors stood out in every shot- from the light green plates and cups to all the beautiful dresses and pink slippers Mrs. Chan wore. Most lovely was the intimate story of Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow, who realize their spouses are having an affair and watching the intimacy of their own relationship develop. + 9.5/10 |
It seems that a bunch of people have watched In the Mood for Love lately, I need to get on the ball. Good to see you around!

Demolition
(Jean-Marc Vallée, 2015) Wanted to see this movie when I saw the trailer. Very disjointed story and characters that felt forced together. Chris Cooper was good but his performance isn't enough to recommend this film. One or two scenes that almost made me tear up but glad I checked it out from the library and didn't spend money on it. 4/10 |

I feel like Wong has definitely matured over the years (or perhaps transitioned away from certain aesthetics), as I think that The Grandmaster is one of his best. |
