SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Most everyone seems to do some sort of countdown around here. I have yet to give it a try. And today I figured "Why not?". But what kind of countdown?

Well, there are enough director and film countdowns right now. So, I won't get into any of that any time soon. The TV one is very intriguing (I watch a lot of TV!), but that can wait, too.

I actually have a notebook with a bunch of lists for different things that I created a few years ago. These lists were generally created out of sheer boredom. I spent a lot of time sitting around in the hospital (for someone else - not me). And then I just started to create various lists. Over the years I updated them or changed some around.

I was looking through the lists the other day and saw The Beatles. And that is the one that I decided to use. I have been on a Beatle kick, anyway, lately. :)

The original list is actually longer than this will be, but I didn't want to get carried away. :)

Just letting you know now that there are 2 songs that will NOT be on this list:
Yesterday
Michelle

I hate them.

I know a lot of my choices won't be songs that are universally liked, but I don't care because I like them. :)

So, let's begin!

Swan 08-24-15 07:25 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Cool. Hope to see a lot from The White Album. That's my favorite of theirs.

SilentVamp 08-24-15 07:25 PM

50. Good Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT6Hi3M13rU

I know a lot of people might think "WHY THIS!?!?". Why not? :) I've always liked this nice little song written by John. It is a nice, calming waltz. And I love George Martin's arrangement.

SilentVamp 08-24-15 07:28 PM

49. Every Little Thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPLnyiLaGn4

I have no real reason for why I like this song. I just do.

There should be at least 5 songs from there. :)

I gave you rep for starting this list, but I'm sad to see that "Yesterday" won't be on the list. I'm not a big Beatles fan, (don't love them, don't dislike them either), but "Yesterday" is one of my favorite songs.

Kaplan 08-24-15 07:56 PM

Big +rep for starting this thread. I will be following. But man, did you start off with some lame songs. :D I'd put "Good Night" in my five least favorite Beatle songs. But it'll be awesome by the time you're finished.

TylerDurden99 08-25-15 12:22 AM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Good Night is kind of fun. Not the best track on it's parent album (or even close really), but I don't mind it.

Camo 08-25-15 12:24 AM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Looking forward to this :). Like Kaplan I'm not a big fan of either of those, but I'm sure I'd have a few of those if I attempted this. Glad you're not including Yesterday, great song but I've heard it enough for this lifetime.

Thanks for the one thing, and I'm sorry for the other. :) I just don't care for it. I think the only version I kind of liked was the one that Boyz II Men recorded. Even if I am not a big fan, I do know all of the words. That gets to be a little frustrating to sing along with a song that I don't even like. :)

You guys have to prepare yourselves for a little bit more lameness before this list is done. :D Like I said, I know I have a tendency to like songs that a lot of other people don't. But I guarantee there will be at least one that will meet your approval. :)

Glad you're not including Yesterday, great song but I've heard it enough for this lifetime.
That may be my problem with it. I have just heard it too much. I don't know. It just doesn't do anything for me. It never really did.

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Trust me I love The Beatles. It is statistically impossible that I'll only like one ;)

SilentVamp 08-25-15 05:28 PM

48. Anytime At All
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjr9XOviDSw

Just another one that I like for no particular reason.

SilentVamp 08-25-15 05:31 PM

Just a nice, little, sweet song. :)

Nice list Vamp! I understand about Yesterday....I've heard it so many times. I'll be watching to see if you get to my favorite Beatles songs.:)

SilentVamp 08-25-15 05:37 PM

46. The Night Before
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGUeOcCmUVU
I've always felt that "Help!" was actually a very underrated album. This is the first of the songs from the album that will be making the list. For me, it is one of those songs that I get into the moment it starts.

Camo 08-25-15 05:42 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

I like The Night Before and also think Help! is a bit underrated. If there is such a thing as an underrated Beatles album.

SilentVamp 08-25-15 05:46 PM

45. Your Mother Should Know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xycaGZtusmo
I like this song. I really do. If I didn't, it would be on the list! But I love this clip. Look at Ringo in the beginning. The one who should have the best rhythm is the one who is a little quick in his timing. :) I can never get enough of this. :D

Well, I suppose I should say one of their least appreciated albums. How about that? :)

I wanted to average about 2 songs a day. But I may not be here tomorrow. So, I threw those last two in today. :)

Kaplan 08-25-15 06:13 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

I really like "The Night Before." You know that list I have of my five least favorite Beatle songs? "Your Mother Should Know" is on it. Oh, well.

Well, if I have listed 2 out of the 5 songs, maybe I will manage to come up with the other 3. There's still time. :D

 for The Night Before and Any Time At All.

As evident in my avatar picture, I am a HUGE fan of the Beatles, so I dig your list so far.

Glad to see Your Mother Should Know and Any Time At All have made your Top 50.

I am currently compiling my Top 50 Bands, and, let me just say, The Beatles are somewhere on my list (no spoilers :) )

cricket 08-25-15 10:52 PM

All the videos on the 1st page are crashing my phone after a few seconds. Please post the entire list when done.:)

SilentVamp 08-27-15 04:30 PM

44. Revolution
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8ftyVQM5FE

I really love this version, too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btiGuWIurek

And based on my mood, I like one better than the other. Today, my mood in more into the first one. :)

SilentVamp 08-27-15 04:34 PM

43. I'm Happy Just to Dance with You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcoFi2fuzx0

When I was little kid there were two Beatles songs that I loved so much. One of them will appear much later in this countdown. The other one is this one right now.

Camo 08-27-15 04:43 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Revolution is a great song . Im Just Happy To Dance With You is OK too.

Great list idea! The Beatles are my 2nd favorite band ever (after Pink Floyd)

Kaplan 08-28-15 06:50 AM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Nice to see "Revolution." I consistently prefer the album version, but the single version is good too. It's like two separate songs.

SilentVamp 08-28-15 03:23 PM

42. Good Morning Good Morning
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2__jtdn2UA

This is another one of those songs that I really like with no real reason for it. I just do. But one thing that I can point out that I enjoy in the song is that brass section. I love how it sounds.

SilentVamp 08-28-15 03:26 PM

41. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNyPXWMnIz0

SilentVamp 08-28-15 03:32 PM

40. I Need You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pPsqc85sek

This is one of those songs that I wish more people would appreciate.

SilentVamp 08-28-15 03:34 PM

39. She Loves You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0YifXhm-Zc

This is just classic Beatles right here. And I can't deny the fact that I love it.

I would normally keep them separated, but I was more in the mood for the single version yesterday. So, I made that the main focus, but I think I tend to lean more towards the album version most of the time. Even though I like to separate the two, I just decided to put them both in the countdown together. It made things simpler. :)

The reason you like it is because it's a great song. :D I like the anthology version too which is the same version but without the brass section, and it has more of a rock sound.

I love "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away."

Camo 08-28-15 04:08 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

I like all four of these songs. Man this list is showing me how much of a Beatles fanboy I am when I really like some songs I would never consider for my own list:p

Can I ask what your favorite Beatles album is Vamp?

What I love about the Anthology version is that the beat is so much more prominent.

I am very curious now as to what songs you would choose. Do you think you'd ever attempt a Beatles list?

Can I ask what your favorite Beatles album is Vamp?
I guess it is a toss-up between Revolver and Rubber Soul. I tend to bounce back and forth between those two for which I like the best. But I really love A Hard Day's Night (US or UK version - doesn't matter). What would you choose?

SilentVamp 08-29-15 04:25 PM

38. Baby You're a Rich Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVtHztdkrnU

Oddball kid that I was, this was probably my third favorite Beatles song when I little. I didn't like what I think would've been the typical songs for a kid to gravitate towards. :)

SilentVamp 08-29-15 04:30 PM

37. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRtAO-nffz0

I love this song. But do you want to know what I think I like better?

This one (speaking of Anthology versions):

Sorry SV, I've only just seen your thread. Every Beatles song has a lorra lorra memories for me, specially the early ones. I imagine it was hard for you to get all your favourites sorted out :)

Camo 08-29-15 05:11 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Not a big fan of Baby You're A Rich Man but Ob LA is great.

I might try a Beatles list at some point will be pretty impossible though. Funnily enough Revolver and Rubber Soul are my favourites, those were the two I voted for in the Albums Countdown. Love them all though.

mojofilter 08-29-15 05:22 PM

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Thumbs up for Baby You're A Rich Man.

Ob-la-di Ob-la-da is a song I tend to skip when listening to the White Album. Even Paul, who wrote the song, considers it a throwaway. It's a good tune, though.

Not to be that guy, but I'd like to know where you heard Paul saying it was a throwaway song. He wanted it released as a single at the time. John hated it and hated the crazy number of takes Paul wanted to do on it to get it right, but it was John (supposedly stoned) who started bashing away on the piano and created the faster tempo, which certainly improved it.

Well, Lennon wanted "Revolution 9" (which I like) released as a single, but he was the only one.

Oh, that's OK. :) I'm glad that you're liking these songs that I have chosen so far. It isn't so hard to come up with the songs that I like the best (these 50 are actually taken from a top 100 list of mine :)), but to make sure that they were in the order that I felt they should've been in wasn't an easy task. Although my top 10 is easy because that hasn't changed for years. :)

Too late. You are that guy, and I hate you for it <jk>

I might be mistaken that Paul himself said it was a throwaway. It's what I believe it to be and hope he thinks of it the same way.

I love John Lennon (I guess my avatar kinda gives that away), and I must admit Revolution 9 is the biggest piece of crap he had ever done. That along with Two Virgins. Maybe it's awesome to some people who like avant-garde, but I call it like I hear it. Crap! The other 3 were right :D

This will actually be harder for me to make than the Top 50 Bands. But it shall happen. It will happen.

You've already started yours so I don't think my opinion would matter now. :D

Well, I have quite a bit more of John to put on my list. I wonder how many of them will be the same. :)

SilentVamp 09-02-15 06:27 PM

I just realized something. I am already at the halfway point. I said that I wanted to post 2 songs a day, but I got a little carried away with some of those days and posted a few more than 2. :)

Anyway, as this is the halfway point, I wanted to add extra music to this list. This is from the Cirque du Soleil show "Love". It was my favorite bit of music to come from it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQldr-CiGAk

First of all, 3 good songs in one track. Second, I absolutely love the seamless transition from one song to the other. Third, I decided to add this song into the countdown. Not as having an "official" spot, but as a bonus.

As for the show "Love", I have never seen it. I have never even been to Las Vegas. I was seriously planning on going, though. I had 2 reasons for why I wanted to go. One was to see "Love" and the other was to see "The Phantom of the Opera". I was willing to make the drive all the way there specifically for those two things (I much prefer to drive rather than bother with any airports). But "Phantom" closed. And I just can't get myself to save up the money for a trip out there to see one show.

All I can do is hope (as of right now - I might still attempt Vegas at some point) that Cirque decides to someday create a touring show. I know that "Love" was specifically created for Las Vegas, but I would be OK with a much more scaled down version of the show. Just as long as I get to see something like it.

One more thing. When I first bought the CD (when it first came out), I thought it was the best thing that I'd heard in years. Yes, it was music that I was very familiar with. But with what George and Giles Martin did with their music, it was like an altogether new experience with the songs. And I was obsessed with it for months. I don't know if a casual Beatles fan would like this, but I can't see how a die hard fan wouldn't love it.

SilentVamp 09-03-15 01:44 AM

22. The Ballad of John and Yoko
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY-ftTvsC7M

I thoroughly enjoy this song in every way, but I suppose I also quite like it because it is all Paul and John.

SilentVamp 09-03-15 01:48 AM

21. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xj2bmQ4P4cM

I am sure someone out there doesn't like this song, but I find that impossible to do. A person has to like it, if for no other reason, for the beat alone. It has a great beat.

What I like about this particular video is that it also includes the reprise of the song. I almost like it a little bit better than the first version.

gbgoodies 09-03-15 01:52 AM

I like the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", but I didn't care much for the movie.

Who did? :D

Although I am sure someone out there did! :)

I do have the soundtrack, though. I won't deny it. :)

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Ah I'm enjoying your list SV :)
The early ones are really taking me back to when we were kids and my mum used to buy Beatles singles in the Epstein family shop NEMS when we went to town. We used to come home and dance to them (and we used to use them as frisbees when they got old and scratched but my mum went mad at that ;) )
Favourites of your last page are- If I Fell, Please Please Me, From Me To You , Ticket to Ride and one of my mum's favourites This Boy.

So many great Beatles songs here! I like them all, but these four I especially like.
31. Hello Goodbye
30. We Can Work It Out
28. Ticket to Ride
21. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

20. Norwegian Wood

19. If I Needed Someone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CYYOK6YcCM

I know George is poorly represented on here. I just haven't mentioned him enough. This is only his third song (his second composition). But it is a damn good one! There is NO way this would ever not be on a list of mine. And he will be mentioned again on this list. :yup:

Beatle 09-03-15 06:33 PM

That's my next one. i won't even bother.

Beatle 09-03-15 06:35 PM

I meant it, but this bird has already flown.

SilentVamp 09-03-15 06:36 PM

18. Good Day Sunshine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS6B8zC2CNI

Every now and then a "chipper" song like this needs to be included in a list like this. :)

SilentVamp 09-03-15 06:37 PM

17. Two Of Us
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXZRaTrOmgg

I nominated this one for the Driving Song Tournament. I believe it made it to the final four. :) I have always loved this one.

I can just imagine how my mother would've gotten if we were using the records like that, too. :p Do you happen to have any of those records still? Or did they all eventually break when they were frisbees? :)

Well, at some point it is bound to happen. :)

And apparently, it would've happened with "Norwegian Wood". Sorry! :) But I think you should still add it to your list if you think it should be there. :yup:

I love Norwegian Wood and Two of Us, which is one of my favorite McCartney songs. Ticket to Ride was a hard-rocking song for it being 1965.

Re: SilentVamp's Top 50 Songs of The Beatles

Thumbs up for Two Of Us. One of my top favorite tunes by the fab four. What I love most about it is how it's sung by both John and Paul. It's almost like they are talking about and to each other. Amazing amazing song!

I always felt that same way. I love that there is that one last song with them singing together like that, too. And with that fact, along with the lyrics, it really does make it somewhat of a poignant song now.

SilentVamp 09-04-15 04:25 PM

16. I Want to Hold Your Hand
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipADNlW7yBM

Oh, the bridge to this song....and then they sing it twice in this. :)

SilentVamp 09-04-15 04:28 PM

15. Got to Get You Into My Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWjEQsAYB9A

No matter what kind of mood I am, and no matter how bad I am feeling, all I have to do is hear the opening horns and I feel better. :yup:

SilentVamp 09-04-15 04:30 PM

14. I Should Have Known Better
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goX9dESxLnU

SilentVamp 09-04-15 04:33 PM

13. I've Got a Feeling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyH3qOFhvJw

I love Paul's part of this song. And then you have John's. :D It is a tough choice for me as to which is better. So they eventually sing their parts together and I can have the best of both world's at the same time. :)

I love those horns too!

12. You're Going to Lose That Girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-96dyCQo-lI

Another one of those songs that I loved so much when I was a kid. It may have moved backwards on the list since then, but it will never be further back than this spot.

SilentVamp 09-05-15 07:44 PM

11. Nowhere Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PASYqq4-iD0

And yet another one that was a childhood favorite. Again, this one has moved back a little bit on the list, too, but like the previous song, it will never be further back than this.

SilentVamp 09-05-15 07:46 PM

10. All My Loving
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWV39QVITzw

I can't believe this is the top 10 already! :) Anyway, one of my absolute favorites (obviously!) and one that I love to hear Paul perform live.

SilentVamp 09-05-15 07:50 PM

9. I Feel Fine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvpfnF5epBA

Like "I Want to Hold Your Hand", this song has that incredible few seconds (10 to be exact - well, 20 if I am being really specific :) ) of great music with its bridge, which is performed twice in this song.

SilentVamp 09-06-15 03:06 PM

8. It's All Too Much
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgGmd-ulVxs

I know this isn't a song that would normally be seen on someone's list, but I love it. And I love it enough to put it in my top 10. And while I know George wasn't crazy about the trumpets, I don't care. I like that little added touch to the song.

SilentVamp 09-06-15 03:08 PM

7. In My Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHt9R1R32g4

Hey, Beatle, you had this song at #6 on your list, and it is #7 on mine. :D

SilentVamp 09-06-15 03:10 PM

6. A Hard Day's Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag8_cfmjdD4

This is just such a great song. I don't see how anyone could dislike it.

SilentVamp 09-15-15 12:45 AM

I know I am behind with this list, but, unfortunately, life took over. So I haven't been able to be online all that much.

Anyway, I think it is about time that I finished this. Don't you? :)

I am down to my final 5. Just to change this up a little bit, I will be posting one Beatles song with a solo "Beatle" song. Basically, I will give you each song by The Beatles that still need to be listed. But along with those songs, I will also include my #1 favorite song by each one of them from their non-Beatle careers.

SilentVamp 09-15-15 12:49 AM

5. Something
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-Q0LmXe9Ek

Quite possibly one of the sexiest and most seductive songs ever written. Well, in my opinion, at least. :)
