Definitely Common. There's no better actor known mostly for music (Foxx and Smith are both better, but they're both known as actors, not singers).

Hey he was in a Shyamalan movie, that man sucks out acting talent worse then George Lucas in the prequels!

Re: Name singers who can act.

I actually think Wahlberg is quite good when he wants to be (I loved his role in the Departed but that wasn't a very serious role he was pretty much just an ******* but he was still good). Even every good actor has those bad movie roles or bad movies.(Except maybe Day Lewis but he does like a movie every 100 years)

Boogie Nights, The Departed, The Fighter, Pain N Gain, Lone Survivor, Shooter, Invincible and Basketball Diaries.

All movies where he is very good in it.

And what do you think of my picks?

gbgoodies 06-28-15 07:30 PM

Barbra Streisand
Cher
John Schneider
Harry Connick Jr.

cricket 06-28-15 07:55 PM

I thought Mick Jagger was good in Performance, and he's been in other movies.

Blondie was good in Videodrome.

I always like Queen Latifah.

Although I haven't seen them, Bjork in Dancer in the Dark and Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls.

Camo 06-28-15 07:56 PM

I was thinking about how surprised people seemed to be about Justin Timberlake's acting in The social network, when he had already brought a very solid performance in Alpha Dog. So agreed on that one.

linespalsy 06-28-15 09:07 PM

This may not be much of a surprise but Lee Ving played a pretty believable scumbag in Flashdance. David Johansen often stands out a little bit in whatever mediocre movies he gets cast in. Mark Wahlberg was perfect in Boogie Nights and I Heart Huckabees, and has been pretty good in some other movies.

There are too many Cantopop stars who are great actors for me to list them all off the top of my head, but Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung, and Anita Mui spring immediately to mind. And you'd basically have to be a soulless monster not to love Faye Wong in Chungking Express.

Ðèstîñy 06-28-15 09:11 PM

I know she was an actress first, and I don't know if that matters for this thread, but I love Gwyneth Paltrow's music. She sounds great. Tim McGraw would also count. He was in Country Strong, with Gwyneth Paltrow. He was in The Blind Side, and a few more films.

Yeah, that's the movie Made in Heaven. I own and love that film. Tom Petty's part is small. You forgot to mention that Ric Ocasek from The Cars, has a small part in it, as well. We discussed this film in the 80's thread, and I snagged that song you posted.

MovieGal 06-28-15 09:20 PM

Takeshi Kaneshiro who is an asian actor (House of Flying Daggers, Red Cliff, Fallen Angels, Chungking Express, etc) is actually a Cantopop star.

I prefer him as an actor... just love him in "Red Cliff".

Madonna did a good job in A League of Their Own.
Bow Wow does a good job in the new show he is on...CSI: Cyber...I think.
Eminem did a good job in 8 Mile...then again the movie was supposed to be based on his life so.....
Tupac was good in every movie he was in.
Aaliyah was amazing!
Queen Latifah...

Kenny Rogers didnts get enough credit in six pack and his gambler movies.

Perhaps the most impressed I've ever been with a singer turned actor (and I probably wouldn't believe it had I not seen it with my own eyes) is actually Courtney Love.

In both The People vs Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon I thought she was excellent. So much so that I think it's a great shame she was never able to really follow those up and make a real movie career for herself

I'll echo JD's post regarding Courtney Love. She really was great in both of those films and should have gone on to do more.

My favourites are the usual stuff like David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth,The Hunger and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, as well as Mick Jagger in Performance and Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly, and Debbie Harry in Videodrome.

I also think Björk was pretty good in Dancer in the Dark.

As for stuff not mentioned: I think legendary French singer Johnny Hallyday (below right) is great in L'homme Du Train

http://www.moviemail.com/images/larg...ain_13_rgb.jpg

and Phil Collins did ok in Buster

Thanks UF. I think a large reason why she probably didn't do more is because of the many problems she has in her personal life in terms of addiction and mental health problems. Issues like that don't tend to make you the most reliable of hires. It might work for your image as a musician but it won't do a great deal for you as an actor. Even if a director desperately wanted her for a part I think they'd have a hell of a time convincing the studio to approve it. I imagine during her worst years it would also have cost a mint to have her insured, if an insurance company would even touch her

Just looking at her imdb page though and she does appear to be having a little bit of a renaissance. After 10 years of doing nothing in the last year she's had recurring roles in three TV shows: Sons of Anarchy, Empire and Revenge, and is currently filming her first movie since 2001.
