Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
All of his films I can watch several times over except Requiem. Besides general replay value they have a nice balance of mental and entertainment engagement
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
The Fountain
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Black Swan gets my vote.
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Black Swan is my personal favorite, but RFAD is phenomenal as well. I'm not a fan of The Fountain though, that film simply did not work.
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I've actually only seen Black Swan & Pi, I prefer Black Swan by a huge margin. I've been meaning to watch Requiem for a Dream
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
It's a toss up between The Wrestler and Requiem for me; Requiem is showier and probably takes the edge. Black Swan really isn't as special as everyone seems to think it is, Pi is interesting and The Fountain is nonsense.

This quote from film critic Michael Atkinson basically sums it up perfectly "It's difficult to recall another American film that, in pursuing a passionate and personal vision, goes so maddeningly, uproariously wrong". |
I haven't seen Pi or The Fountain yet; I liked Black Swan, really like Requiem for a Dream, and I love the Wrestler. So obviously I voted for The Wrestler. I tend to like movies more when I can personally relate to the character or characters, and that order reflects that.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Not particularly huge on him, but The Wrestler is simply a masterwork, and one of the most accurate depictions of one of the most misunderstood industries in the world. Having known many people on the independent wrestling circuit over the years, this apparently hits close to home and breaks the stigma of professional wrestling. Rourke is towering, too, and Clint Mansell has to be one of the best composers alive in America today.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
So what do we think about him attempting to tell the story of Noah? I really hope the film is brilliant.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I have seen all film in the list except The fountain. My favourite is Balck Swan, and the second position is for Requiem for a dream.
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Requiem For A Dream, and Black Swan for me.
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I've only seen The Wrestler. Being a huge wrestling fan I enjoyed it. I definitely need to check out his other flicks.

For me, it's a toss-up between The Fountain and The Wrestler.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
The wrestler is one of my favorites of all time. I hated Black Swan though, so i don't know what to think about Aronofsky, I'll have to see noah first i guess.
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Toss up between Black Swan and Requiem... I voted for Requiem for a dream.
|
I've only seen two of his films from beginning to end. I think REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is an amazing piece of filmmaking. Loved THE WRESTLER and I am i the process of finishing BLACK SWAN.
|
Black Swan but I have not seen Pi yet
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Requiem for a Dream. Excellent haunting score as well.
|
Arg, this one is a tough call for me. He really is one of my favorite directors working today, and well, in general. I'll try my best!
If I had to list them in order, this would probably be accurate. 1.The Fountain 2. Requiem For A Dream 3.Black Swan 4.The Wrestler 5.Noah 6.Pi I really love all of these films, and I'm sure they'll move all around the place with multiple viewings. This is just how I feel about them now, haha. I have to note he always directs phenomenal lead performances. I think Rourke's was probably the most effective for me out of all of them, but Portman, Ellen Burstyn, and Rachel Weisz were also great as well. |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
have yet to see noah.
1.the wrestler 2.the fountain 3.black swan 4.requiem 5.pi |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
On a critical level I would say Requiem for a Dream, however on a personal level I would say The Fountain just because it is an easier watch and I could listen to the soundtrack all day long.
Looking at his films overall it is easy to see that the main theme that ties all of Aronfonsky's work is obsession of one form or another, be it death, drugs, wrestling, ballet or maths. |
He's one of my favorites. I don't like everything he's done, especially The Fountain, but whether I like them or not, his movies are interesting and not Hollywood drivel. I think, but am not sure, that The Black Swan is my favorite, but then so might be Requiem, The Wrestler or Pi. Noah was not a favorite, but I'd still rather see it than somebody else's FX blockbuster.
All things considered, I'd rather see even a middling Aronofsky film than most other movies. |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Requiem For A Dream in my opinion is his masterpiece !
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Definitely The Wrestler. It's a flawless movie. I previously stated this, but I consider The Wrestler to be the third best movie of the 00s (2000-2009).
Black Swan is also great, and would be 2nd. Followed by Requiem for a Dream at third. The Fountain is very underrated. I know a lot of people aren't high on it, but I feel it's a very moving, thought-provoking film. I haven't seen Pi or Mother. |

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I haven't seen Pi yet. Thanks for remind me :).
|
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
From what I've heard from basically everybody, Mother is the weakest film to date. Is that accurate?
|
The best is hard to choose.
Mother! is obviously the worst. |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
For me it's a toss up between "Black Swan" and "Requiem for a Dream", although, right now I'm more so leaning towards RFAD.
I haven't seen "Noah", nor do I plan to. "The Fountain" was unintentionally hilarious. "The Wrestler" is one basic film with not much to chew on. And even though I kinda love "Pi", it does suffer from quite a few issues due to it being his first film. I'm super pumped to see "mother!" and I don't really imagine myself not liking it from what I gathered so far. |
1 and 2 are almost interchangeable for me. The Fountain is simply breath-taking conceptually, visually, and in soundtrack but it has a few moments of awkward acting or odd angles for a few scenes. "Behold!" just does not feel as emotional as it should be, IMO. With that said, Mother! is nearly spotless in those minor faults, just it does not have the same heart-wrenching impact for me as The Fountain. I am sure that is my own baggage pushing me around that. Noah was a very disappointing film. I did not really find it inspiring on any level and much of the visual interest looked identical to The Fountain. |

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I wasnt even aware Noah was directed and written by aranofsky. I thought that was a crowe fail.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Requiem For A Dream
The ultimate masterpiece of the 2000’s |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
I'm in the same boat with Okay. I haven't seen Noah, and have zero desire to ever see it. Maybe if it's on TV one day, and I have nothing else to watch, but I'll never go out my way to watch it.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
black swan for me was just an ultimate ride into human obsession with love and being loved, i love how vincent cassel seduces nathalie indirectly in the film and how she falls for him, her acting is sublime, this movie gives u the feeling of dreadfulness and helplessness aswell as how lonely nathalie is in the film, great film, a classic to me.

Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
For me, it's The Wrestler, and I am rather sure that won't change. A tragic, human film, and, by far, the most honest depiction of a profession that still, to this day, is stigmatised and seen as a 'joke'. It's just impeccably crafted - the grainy, rough 16mm aesthetic to the film captures a harsh reality that very few films can attain.

Flatly refuse to choose between Pi and Requiem.
Have yet to see Mother! |
Re: Best Darren Aronofsky Film?
Watched Pi last night!
A hell of a movie! Really liked! |
The Wrestler
