I just realized that this man - John Goodman - has done everything. So I felt he deserved a thread.

Early in his career, he had the iconic role as the nerds hating coach in Revenge of the Nerds (1984).

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1362265368

He was Walter in The Big Lebowski.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1362265416

He's been Fred Flintsone in The Flintstones.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1362265538

He's been in Academy Award Best Pictures like Argo and The Artist.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1362265594

And of course he played Dan Conner on Roseanne for a decade and he's also been in other films like:

I find his career very impressive. He's only 60 years old.

What do you think of John Goodman?

The Rodent 03-02-13 07:23 PM

Re: John Goodman

Hard to believe he's only 60... the guy has been around forever...

Hard to pick a bad role too... even when he plays a small role, like in Fallen (1998) he stands out... and even though The Flintstones, The Blues Brothers 2000 and King Ralph were abysmal, Goodman made them enjoyable.

Fave roles:
Arachnophobia
Raising Arizona
Punchline
The Big Lebowski
Monsters Inc.

I don't like him as much as the Coen Brothers, but he's a funny guy. My favorite films he's been in are Barton Fink and Argo.

Re: John Goodman

I met him at USC where his daughter goes to film school with my daughter. He lost quite a bit of weight since I first met him. I love all his quirky characters and first remember seeing him in The Survivors. He was in tons of movies in the mid-1980s culminating in Raising Arizona. There are too many others to talk about. :)

Miss Vicky 03-02-13 07:28 PM

I love John Goodman.

My favorite movie role of his is The Big Lebowski. Walter cracks me up.

But my all time favorite Goodman role has always been Dan Conner from Roseanne.

What was your experience like meeting John Goodman?

Re: John Goodman

He's very friendly of course, although he's way more normal than his crazy characters. I actually spoke to him first in the john! He wore glasses and was mostly concerned with his daughter as I was with mine. I've never really had a long conversation with him based on both of us being too busy, but there's always graduation if I'm up to it.

Mark F has been to the bathroom with this guy:

Just saw him in Flight and he was good. I like him well enough but I feel like he overacts a little bit. He's a big guy and always seems to play a loud character. I don't know if he's quite got the talent to justify the attention his roles get. I do like him though.

I've always liked him a lot, he's always very good and he's had his share of awesome roles.

I still have not seen The Big Lebowski. I actually bought the Blu-ray once and RETURNED IT, unopened, just because I had this feeling that I wouldn't like it. It was a blind buy. Now I kinda wish I hadn't. But clips I've seen of it online... didn't do anything for me.

Once I was making an ass of myself on the Nolan vs Arnofsky thread and I think it was Brodinski that used that "Shut the **** of Donny" clip to me.

Funniest line in The Big Lebowski, IMO.

Donny gets it so hard in that movie. So hard.

Good for him, he deserves to be coming into his prime. He's getting a lot of great roles lately, hoping this continues. Would love to see him star in something opposite Alan Arkin.

shut the #$%& up Donnie...your outta your element!!! WALTER IS AWESOME!!! and the guy who plays him is a GOODMAN.

I watched Barton Fink last night, and this guy is truly awesome in it.

Re: John Goodman

I really like the guy. He was the best part about The Flintstones; I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Fred in that movie. Now, if only everything else about it didn't suck...
I'd have to say my two favorite films with him in them are The Emperor's New Groove and The Big Lebowski.

Re: John Goodman

he's a fantastic supporting actor but i don't think i would ever cast him as my lead. he doesn't a great job but i don't think he has a lot of audience draw.. maybe because he is so fat but isn't hilarious like chris farley

Miss Vicky 07-11-13 11:21 AM

Re: John Goodman

Chris Farley wasn't hilarious. He wasn't even funny at all.

LOVE Goodman! From Roseanne throughout so many flicks. He always shines in the roles he does. Real hard to choose a favorite, and has for lebowski quotes:

"You know, I dabbled in pacifism for a time - not in 'Nam, of course,"

John Goodman is one of the most underrated actors alive, and one of the greatest scene-stealers.

Different strokes. David spade couldn't even keep himself from laughing during the scene.
Personally I didn't find the big L funny at all

The Rodent 07-12-13 01:47 AM

Re: John Goodman

Farley was ok... he was funnier when playing it serious though, his humour was best suited to the everyman who plays it straight... I wasn't keen on his whacky comedy.

He wasn't a patch on Goodman though.

David Spade: yet another unfunny comedian.

That's just like your opinion, man.

John Goodman is a great character actor.

He was something else as the pest exterminator in Arachnaphobia!

Re: John Goodman

John Goodman is one of the most talented and versatile actors in the business...the guy can play anything. And how he NEVER won an Emmy for his flawless work on ROSEANNE (pick a season, any season) has always been a head-scratcher to me.

Daniel M 07-28-13 06:32 PM

John Goodman is an actor I like a lot, one of my favourites actually from what I have seen, particularly his performances in the Coen Brothers' films..

http://www2.jpscotland.co.uk/steamie...ski-779602.bmp

Ranked by performance:

The Big Lebowski
| Goodman

Barton Fink
| Goodman

Raising Arizona
| Goodman

Argo
| Goodman

Flight
| Goodman

The Hangover Part III
| Goodman
+

The last two before Hangover are small, but really good comedic parts where I enjoyed him on screen.

Voice films, not rating performance:

ParaNorman

The Princess and the Frog

Cars

Monsters, Inc.

earlsmoviepicks 07-29-13 09:17 AM

One of the few guys who can share a screen with Pacino :):)

*Applauds*

I love Goodman, I've never seen him in anything where he wasn't great. And he really is at his best with the Coen brothers. He was great in Community as well.

Cinephile Society 09-13-13 01:59 PM

John Goodman is just so dynamic, he can play anything from Walter in Big Lebowski to Charlie Meadows in Barton Fink, just amazing
