Some of your favorites of 2013-2014

Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
The Wolverine
|
Man of Steel
promo looks good. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
The only films I've seen in 2013 so far are Warm Bodies and A Good Day to Die Hard, so I'll say those. I refuse to say something I haven't seen is a favorite until I actually watch said movie. :P
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Movies I have seen in 2013:
Gangster Squad Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters A Haunted House Mama Snitch Out of those Gangster Squad and Mama were probably my favorites. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Wreck it Ralph. although, the movie is geared towards video game lovers.
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
I haven't seen any 2013 movies yet unfortunately, but of what has been released already I'm interested in seeing Side Effects, Spring Breakers, Oz, and possibly Warm Bodies (although it looks incredibly stupid).
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
I liked Oz: The Great and Powerful. Mama was also okay, but I did not liked the end. I read that there will be a sequel to 300! I'm excited to see that one!
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Only film I have seen that was released this year was 'side effects'
I thought it was pretty good. Clever. Rooney Mara a delight. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
From what I've seen.
Spring Breakers Evil Dead |

Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
This year I've seen Wreck-it Ralph and Oz. I have to say I enjoyed both but Wreck-it was far better. A brilliant homage to video gaming and at the same time a Toy Story-ish take on responsibility, growing up and social changes. It is quite brilliant.
Oh and just remembered, I watched 7 Psychopaths too and have become a fan. A great cast, solid acting but the story did falter at times. Not as good as In Bruges but a very good comedy none the less. |

Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Only seen To The Wonder. Want to see: Twelve Year A Slave, Upstream Color, The Place Beyond the Pines and more including The Weight of Elephants. Thank you TokeZa for mentioning it in this thread. Judging from the trailer it could be a Malick inspired film.

Django Unchained
The Croods Mama Wreck it Ralph In that order. First half of Wreck it Ralph would be up in 2nd place but really dissappointing second half ruined it for me. |

|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Fast and Furious 6 and Star Trek Into Darkness were so good! Loved them!
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Iron Man 3
The Last Stand (f**k the critics and box office this was a damn good movie)! |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
I loved Side Effects. The first hour of that film should be preserved in cinematic history. If Soderbergh had kept his commentary on psychiatry, and psychiatric meds -- it may have been one of the best and most profound films on the subject.
1) Side Effects 2) Place Beyond the Pines 3) Mud 4) Upstream Color |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
^ I've got that Upstream Colour coming through soon, heard good things about it.
|
Wreck It Ralph is a 2012 movie, but did you mean movies that came out this year or just films that we watched for the first time this year? If it's the latter, my pick would be Forrest Gump. Just watched it for the first time about three months ago, and it was amazing.
So far, the films of 2013 I've seen have been John Dies at the End, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Bullet to the Head, Iron Man 3, Evil Dead, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and Olympus Has Fallen. Out of those, the ones I would buy on Blu-Ray are Evil Dead, Iron Man 3, and Olympus Has Fallen. The rest either sucked or were merely okay. Also, I can't wait to see Man of Steel and Carrie - since so many people are talking about films that haven't come out yet for some reason. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
In response to one of the last comments, Mud is another one I really want to see. I've heard nothing but good things about it.
|

I still think Nichols' magnum opus is "Take Shelter" |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Iron Man 3
The Internship |
I just saw my third movie of 2013 and I would probably rank the three I've seen as followed:
1. Side Effects (just watched it, awesome film!) 2. The Great Gatsby 3. Gangster Squad I'll try to watch more 2013 movies this year than I watched 2012 movies last year. Hopefully there are some gems among them. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Great Gatsby
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
sunny, 2011 korean movie.
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
It's available on Demand but given the sound design of the movie, you should get a surround sound setup . Don't watch it on a laptop.. it loses its effect. It's very weird though. When I saw it theaters, the guy behind me got up and yelled 'What the hell?!?!" during one of the more bizarre transitions.
|
None, nada, zilch! None of the movies this year was great!
Haven't watched too many. But will give Side Effects the edge. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
I somehow thought silver linings playbook would be a dull romantic comedy at first, maybe because of the cast.. But I did end up liking it. Predictable maybe and typical, but still good.

My favourite 2013 movie would be The Last Stand. It had plenty of action, it was entertaining and hilarious. Really enjoyed it. I have seen Side Effects, but it didn't impress me. |

Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Enjoyed Monsters University.
High hopes for Wolverine :) |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Have not seen too much this year, but I loved The Place Beyond The Pines. I thought This is The End was hilarious, and thought that Fruitvale Station was ok.
|
Side Effects is still the best film of 2013 I've seen so far. A lot of hopeful films are coming out this fall, though.
|
1. Now you see me.
2. Side Effects. 3. Pain & Gain. Rest are crap. I think Despicable Me 2 should be there somewhere. Haven't seen it, so cant say how good it is. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Not impressed by Side Effects.

I've seen 14 films so far from this year and I would say the best is The Place Beyond the Pines. I also enjoyed Mud, The Great Gatsby, and The Last Stand. Oblivion, The Conjuring and Only God Forgives were pretty good too. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Haven't seen many movies this year...but my favorites are
1. The World's End 2. Star Trek Into Darkness 3. Man of Steel 4. Iron Man 3 5. The Last Stand 6. Oblivion |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
The Place Beyond the Pines is probably the best of the year so far.
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
I watched 3-4 2013 movies so far. Nothing is really good and thinking about it I noticed that I watched nearly 200 movies this year but everything was OLD. Tons of Robert Bresson's movies (8 in fact), for instance.
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
This year has been an embarrassment for new films on the whole
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
My Top 5 so far:
1. The Place Beyond the Pines 2. Stoker 3. Blue Jasmine 4. You're Next 5. Lovelace |

So far The World's End, The Grandmaster, The Great Gatsby and Trance have been the good ones (I know, predictable that a Wong Kar-wai and a Danny Boyle movie would be among my favorites). Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel were mediocre (how typical that I'd say that about a Star Trek). Iron Man 3 was okay. Pacific Rim was dumb dumb dumb but kinda fun anyway.
|
oblivion, world's end
|
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Nothing great this year so far with The Grandmaster being the only thing that went close. World War Z and Elysium were pretty good but that's about it.

Camille Claudel 1915 by Bruno Dumont. Clearly the best film of the year for me and in my opinion the best film by Bruno Dumont so far. Captivating performance by Juliette Binoche. If you are into movies similar to Robert Bresson i can strongly recommend it. Im really looking forward to the new movies by Jia Zhangke, Jafar Panahi, Asghar Farhadi, Steve McQueen, Noah Baumbach and Calin Peter Netzer. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Sin_poster.jpg http://www.criticker.com/img/films/p...ed_Curtain.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ast_poster.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ilm_poster.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Ha_poster.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ose_poster.jpg So far its shaping up to be an okay year for film imo. |

Really like this best to worst format being used. It helps me find movies from posters with similar tastes
In-Order From Greatest to Least: Gravity (10/10) Oblivion (7.5/10) Sunny (7.5/10) Wreck it Ralph 7.5/10 *videogamers will enjoy this film immensely more World's End (7/10) Star Trek: Into Darkness (6/10) World War Z (5/10) Europa report (2.5/10) |
From what I've seen so far this year:
I recommend: 1. Side Effects - Gorgeously directed and very entertaining! 2. Before Midnight - Probably the most profound and most intense film of the trilogy. 3. The Way Way Back - It's sweet, it's dramatic (a few times perhaps a little over the top for my tastes), it's sometimes funny and the acting performances are brilliant. 4. Rush - There's fun, there's drama, there's a lot of racing and it all works out pretty well. 5. The Great Gatsby - It's a good film, but there was a certain 'chemistry' lacking, in my opinion. It all looks great, though. 6. The Croods - I Love its message and it has a few wonderful moments. 7. Despicable Me 2 - It's almost as good as its predecessor, because it compensates its weaker storyline with more funny/cute/entertaining scenes. 8. This Is the End - I didn't think it was very funny, but it's entertaining and in some way even refreshing. I don't recommend: 9. Monsters University - It has a few good moments, but it fails to recapture the magic of the first movie. 10. Gangster Squad - An uninspired gangster film without any heart or soul. 11. Only God Forgives - Visually interesting, but overall it's the biggest disappointment of the year so far for me personally. 12. The Hangover Part III - Watchable crap. 13. Movie 43 - Barely watchable crap. |
Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Only seen 5 films thus far, but we are getting into awards season soon and then I'll be seeing a lot.

Re: Some of your favorites of 2013
Very Good
Gravity - Beautifully acted and visually stunning. Ending was ok at best. Don Jon - I'm bias toward JGL. Fun to see the growth of the character. Pacific Rim - Felt like a giddy 10 year old leaving the theater. Story not spectacular as well as the acting. Just a fun movie IMO, don't take it as more. (Notice how they are all original ideas, I give double the points for that...specially JGL for writing, directing and starring) Good Enough Star Trek: Into the Darkness - Entertaining enough, villain was awesome acting. Plot gets a little jumbled for me but still entertaining. Iron Man 3 - Same as Star Trek entertaining enough. Liked it better then the 2nd one. RDJ is always fun as Tony Stark. Little jumbled too. Both stay in the vein of previous versions Mud - Conflicted on this one. Worth a watch thou. McConaughy is definitely awesome in it. Haven't really seen any stinkers this year unless you consider Place Beyond the Pines in 2013. First 2 acts held my attention and were fascinating set up. But the 3rd one is ridiculous to me. Loses all it's steam. Still left to see in 2013: The Spectacular Now (Teller is from my home town. So I pull for him. Heard its a great movie) Fruitvale 12 Years A Slave American Hustle Saving Mr. Banks Wolf Of Wall Street Inside Llweyen Davis Anchorman 2 |

I don't go to the movies so I've only seen 6 so far. This is how I would rank them-
1. Pain and Gain 2. Mud 3. The Call 4. The Hangover 3 5. The Evil Dead 6. This is the End |
By far, the best movie that I have seen so far this year has been The World's End, which is simultaneously the funniest, most exciting, most dramatic and best acted of the Three Flavors Trilogy. Like The Avengers, I was shocked at just how much character development Edgar Wright was able to allow for each character, especially with such a large primary cast. It was also great to see Nick Frost tackling a far meatier role than I'm used to seeing him in (and pull it off so well at that). 9.5/10
A fairly close runner up, at least thus far, is Much Ado About Nothing. While i'm not the biggest fan of Shakespeare's comedies (give me a nice, meaty tragedy any day of the week), this one was exceptional. The shifts in tone from sometimes-noir-ish to sometimes-comical were well managed and the two leads (plus Nathon Fillion) were consistently hilarious throughout the film. 8.5/10 Captain Phillips rounds my top three. It's possibly Tom Hanks' best role since Forrest Gump, which comes to a dramatic head at the very end of the film (easily the best portrayal of a person suffering from shock that I've ever seen). The pirate captain was equally well-acted. The film was just as tense, thrilling and dramatic as I've come to expect from Paul Greengrass. 8.5/10 |
A small update:
I recommend: 1. Gravity - Amazing visuals and 3D effects, two great acting performances and a wonderful message make this the best film of 2013 so far for me. 2. Side Effects - Gorgeously directed and very entertaining! 3. Before Midnight - Probably the most profound and most intense film of the trilogy. 4. The World's End - It's full of entertaining scenes and the story is also extremely engaging and poignant. Only the very very ending wasn't necessary for me (the sort of aftermath/epilogue), but that's nitpicking. Great picture! 5. The Way Way Back - It's sweet, it's dramatic (a few times perhaps a little over the top for my tastes), it's sometimes funny and the acting performances are brilliant. 6. Rush - There's fun, there's drama, there's a lot of racing and it all works out pretty well. 7. The Great Gatsby - It's a good film, but there was a certain 'chemistry' lacking, in my opinion. It all looks great, though. 8. The Croods - I Love its message and it has a few wonderful moments. 9. Despicable Me 2 - It's almost as good as its predecessor, because it compensates its weaker storyline with more funny/cute/entertaining scenes. 10. This Is the End - I didn't think it was very funny, but it's entertaining and in some way even refreshing. 11. About Time - It begins really really well until it starts overusing its concept of time traveling for dramatic reasons (in the third act). From then on the film loses its wit and credibility, in my opinion. I still recommend it, but it's definitely overlong. I don't recommend: 12. Monsters University - It has a few good moments, but it fails to recapture the magic of the first movie. 13. Gangster Squad - An uninspired gangster film without any heart or soul. 14. Only God Forgives - Visually interesting, but overall it's the biggest disappointment of the year so far for me personally. 15. The Hangover Part III - Watchable crap. 16. Movie 43 - Barely watchable crap. |
Gonna be hard to put these into an order, but contenders for my top 10 so far are (all 2013 releases in UK):
Stoker, Gravity, Lincoln, The Place Beyond The Pines, Don Jon, Captain Phillips, The Wolverine, Blue Jasmine, Rush, You're Next, Alan Patridge: Alpha Papa, Blackfish, Cloud Atlas and Despicable Me 2. Worst film is a toss-up between Diana and Olympus Has Fallen. Film I thought would be in my top 10, but fell out of the race early: Django Unchained. |

Haven't seen a lot of 2013 films but out of what I've seen, Gravity (which was only a 4/5 from me). Still gotta get caught up as I'm sure there's a ton of masterpieces out there waiting. In terms of the worst, Olympus Has Fallen was dreadful. I get a headache just thinking about that mess. |
