What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
What movies do you like that feature mostly talking, and not much more? Maybe there was something about the conversing that held your interest: thought-provoking, funny, intellectual, snappy, witty? Hurly Burly is one I can think of to get things started. Perhaps not an example of a top one in this category.

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
There is more, but these are dialogue-heavy, and the dialogue is terrific.
Elmer Gantry The Maltese Falcon (1941) Casablanca One, Two, Three Sunset Blvd. Heaven Can Wait (1943) The Front Page/His Girl Friday Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Pygmalion Some Like It Hot I could list hundreds more, but that makes it no fun for everybody else. |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Reservoir Dogs
Glengarry Glen Ross Coffee and Cigarettes 12 Angry Men Dr. Strangelove In Bruges |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
12 Angry Men......Glengarry..........Virginia Woolf, etc.. Excellent textbook examples. Thanks for the listing. You now, it really says something when a straight-dialogue film leaves you just as fresh at the end of the movie.
His Girl Friday is my top choice for 'snappy' dialogue-driven film. |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Clerks
Pulp Fiction |
I still have not seen Pulp Fiction. Is is a must see?

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
One of my favorites of late is In the Loop. It's witty and non-stop and one of those rare treats where paying attention leads to more laughs. Just a fun film in general.

Have you ever seen Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister? I guess it's an 80's version but funnier... Scrap that, funny. :D Either way, my guess is that you'd like it.
It also illustrate brilliantly the old saying; "The more things change, the more they stay the same." |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Could come up with a lot if I thought about it, but off the top of my head I'd say 12 Angry Men and The Breakfast Club.

I don't think I could take movie opinions seriously from anybody who hasn't seen it.

Don't waste your time with Pulp, mountaineer:rotfl:

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Tarintino kinda owns this thread, i have yet to see jackie brown but,
Resevoir dogs Pulp Fiction Inglourious Basterds Death Proof Kill Bill Vol 2 are all top notch talky movies 12 angry men is also the best play ever made IMO |
Tatantino, Schmarantino.
one odd-ball movie that tends to get over-looked a lot is Oleanna. i've always thought it had some heavy-handed but phenomenal dialogue. like many of its kind, it's based on the play of the same name. it's kind of an awkward, stilted experience and very ambiguous but really multifaceted. |
I second All About Eve. Fantastic dialogue

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Besides All About Eve, I'd add more Joe Mankiewicz flix, A Letter to Three Wives and People Will Talk. I'd also add Laura and Sitting Pretty, both with Clifton Webb just as witty as George Sanders.

I figured I'd rent Pulp Fiction this coming weekend. What the heck.

The Ninth Configuration has great dialogue. It's directed and written by William Peter Blatty and was released in 1980. It's definitely a serious film, but has some of the most witty writing I've ever heard in a movie. Very highly recommended if you haven't seen it.

Tarintino>>>> Nolan |
Not technically a movie but Metal Gear Solid was vey heavy on dialogue but was brilliant
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Waking Life has many interesting dialogues(monologues) about people, emotions and meaning of life,it's a philosophical movie.
Also I remember some great lines from Stalker. Of course, the best I think is Tarantino. ^^ |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Inglorious Basterds, etc. Almost all of Tarantino's work is heavy on dialogue, but he has a keen ear for that kind of stuff, which makes him one of the best.
The Godfather 1 and 2 were a little heavy on dialogue, and people consider them some of the best films ever made (myself included). Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was jam-packed with dialogue, but the film is spectacular, especially an unusually quiet Gary Oldman. The Silence of the Lambs is up there in terms of heavy usage of dialogue, but I'll be damned if not one bit of it doesn't make it one of the best films ever created, even if Gene Siskel (rest his soul) disagreed with it. 12 Angry Men is all a courtroom drama, so dialogue is the driving force behind it. Even still, it's one of best dramas ever created on film, on stage, or even on radio. |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
I love '12 Angry Men.' How bout' the scene near the end when Lee J. Cobb finally breaks down and votes not guilty. He was prejudiced against the juvenile delinquent defendant because his own son went bad.
|
The Philadelphia Story is a great example. The 30's and 40's in general are chock full of great movies that rely almost entirely on clever dialogue.
|
Clerks, or other Kevin Smith vehicles are good if your into that whole fanboy vibe.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
A bunch of films that are successfully adapted from plays and such, like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf or Carnage or any of Kenneth Branaugh's Shakespeare adaptations.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
I have always loved The Grass Is Greener with Cary Grant, entirely dialogue. I think Tarantino is the current master with Pulp Fiction being my favorite. Sorkin is hit or miss for me but I loved Social Network. I also feel that the dialogue in Lincoln is what made it the best of the year.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
I even seen Social Network. What does does that say about me? :D
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
I've never watched a movie that relies on dialogue as much as Glengarry Glen Ross. So, for fans of films that are heavy on dialogue and that haven't seen Glengarry Glen Ross yet, then you should see it.
But my favourite has to be Pulp Fiction. |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Good Will Hunting has very well-written dialogue, and deservedly earned Ben Affleck the title of being the youngest person ever to win an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Richard Brooks' Elmer Gantry has the best dialogue of any movie in my opinion, buy there are plenty of others which are fine examples, especially films by Lubitsch, Joe Mankiewicz and Billy Wilder.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Thank You for Smoking (2005).
Great movie, satirical comedy, but very funny. The dialog makes it. Social Network was a good one, very dialog heavy :) |
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
The Shipping News - criminally under-appreciated movie
Having said that, Newfoundlanders tend to dislike it as they don't like the way they and their island is represented; great film though it may be, I'm with the islanders on this - been to Newfoundland many times & a more beautiful, friendly place you'd be hard pressed to find. |
WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? comes to mind. Not to mention MY DINNER WITH ANDRE of course.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Slacker is a brilliant and endlessly interesting film that revolves entirely around hopping from character to character and letting each one say their piece. It's Linklater's first filled with Joycean references and interesting philosophies. Not to mention that it's mostly in long takes! Slacker is an endlessly entertaining talkie that perfectly captures a time and space.

His Girl Friday. Brilliant rapid-fire dialogue delivered beautifully by a great cast. Billy Gilbert is delicious.

I'd also recommend Z, Judgment to Nuremberg, and Scenes From a Marriage.
|
Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
Heavy on dialogue? I guess Persona is the highest ranked film on my favorites list that is driven by dialogue more than everything else.
Tokyo Story and Ikiru may be regarded as heavy on dialogue? I don't think so. They use dialogue to a moderate extent, more than a typical hollywood blockbuster but less than a typical Bergman film. |

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
In Bruges I really, really ended up liking. It's a dark comedy. This film is one of my favorites already. The characters are so cool, the atmosphere is excellent as is the dialogue and writing. Such an awesome film.

Re: What are the best movies that are heavy on dialogue?
The first few that comes to mind are:
Dead Man Walking, Glengarry Glen Ross and The Women. |
