Oh, I watched them in French. I got movies all over the place and my library indexing is a little strange. For instance I have Costa Gavras's Z in war classics. From your list I would include into mine Grand Illusion, Purple Noon, Queen Margot, Jean de Florette , Manon Of The Spring and Diabolique, but that's just my taste, I'm sure the others are worthy as well. I haven't seen One Deadly Summer and Le Boucher and will check them out. Thanks for contribiuting.

The Grand Illusion
Pickpocket
Les Diaboliques
Army Of Shadows
Orpheus
La Haine

Sans Soleil

Le Boucher is good.

A pretty cliche list, but here's what I could think of:
Le Samourai
The City of Lost Children
The Tenant

Delicatessen
La Jetee
Le Cercle Rouge
Un Chien Andalou
La belle et la bete
400 Blows
Bob le Flambeur
Army Of Shadows
Mr. Hulot's Holiday

______

They aren't really favorites, but I feel like giving Carnival of Sinners (1943) and Malefique a mention as well.

No, these are my favs. I always see 3 or 4 French films every month---I'm usually pretty consistent. Also top 50 or top 100 lists around here are reversed to generate suspense in the final outcome. So the bottom column, 20 - 1, would be the best of the best.

Any movies originaly made in French is fine. Incendies was excellent. Wonderfully strange story line with a wow! ending that leaves you speachless.

Don't know about America(I've never heard anyone from America use the term for other animations outside), but Les Triplettes de Belleville is called an animation in my world, certainly not anime - this term is connected to animations that come out of Japan.

Ha, ha. Sorry?

honeykid 01-31-12 10:57 PM

I believe the point she was making is that "Anime" is a term used for Japanese animation and, therefore, has a distinctive style.

http://images.wikia.com/entertainmen...me_image10.jpg
http://images.wikia.com/hetalia/imag...talia_boys.jpg

A style which isn't represented in Les Triplettes de Belleville.

http://photos2.media.pix.ie/04/4C/04...3BB3A0FD4E.jpg
http://pukingrainbows.files.wordpres...-fatpeople.jpg

Therefore, to describe Les Triplettes de Belleville as anime is incorrect.

Anime, animation - cartoons in motion, all the same cartoon soup to me ( no matter the style ) so I wouldn't include it on my list. When I say movies, I mean real actors and actresses, otherwise I just call them documentaries. Animation is a whole seperate category and anime would be a sub-category ( Japanese ) so from that technical aspect, you are correct but this dicussion really doesn't belong in this thread. I make my list for most people that have certain expectations and I appreciate feedback that can enrich me so I can enjoy similiar kinds of movies that I haven't allreeady seen. Not here to debate the difference between anime and animation.

Re: Favorite French Movies

WOOOW, where to begin :P I'm Belgian, born in a french-speaking family, so I grew up watching a lot of french films. There are sooo many good ones, its impossible to name them all.

A small list of all time favorites would be:

Asterix et Obelix - Mission Cleopatre
Le Grand Blue
Les Visiteurs
Le Gendarme
Le petit baigneur
Bienvenue Chez les Ch'ties

But really, the entire Gendarme franchise, Taxi franchise, every single Louis De Funes movie, Les Bronzés franchise,... The french are the masters of humor, in my opinion.
Any movie with Jean Reno, Gerard Depardieu, Christian Clavier, Danny Boon, Louis de Funes, Thierry Lhermitte or Jean-Paul Belmondo are great and fun to watch!

Edit: Damn! I almost forgot to include "Le FabuleuxDestin d'Amélie Poulain"

Mississippi Mermaid
Cyrano de Bergerac
BON VOYAGE......hi guys these movies are my favorite.

Re: Favorite French Movies

Some of my favorites are:

La Haine (1995,Mathieu Kassovitz)
A Prophet (2009,Jacques Audiard)
Leon: The Professional (1994,Luc Besson)
Delicatessen (1991,Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003,Sylvain Chomet)

Oh and I still need to see "Joyeux Noel" and "La Femme Nikita". Those would most likely make my list.

I prefer '...contre caeser' myself.
