Best Helicopter scenes on film
Im a huge fan of copters, with the release of APOCALYPSE NOW REDUEX and BLACK HAWK DOWN it got me thinking which are the best.
10 I totally dig are: THE GAUNTLET- Clint on a Harley hooting away from the bad guys in the copter BLUE THUNDER- Spying through the walls and chases through the concrete jungle SUPERMAN- The man of steel catches the whirly bird and the girl THE DEER HUNTER- rescue in the river THE HOT ROCK- he getaway man that can drive or fly anything THE MATRIX- smashing into the building T2- Robert Patrick oozes on into the cockpit DIE HARD- the top of the building blows and so does the FBI copter PREDATOR- Flying into the jungle FIRST BLOOD- Johnny Boy jumps off a massive cliff and still has a good throwing arm to take the huey down. |
Hah! As soon as I saw this topic I thought of Blue Thunder.
I remember watching that scene when I was like 12, I was like... "woah." One movie that I'll have to add to the list is Swordfish. The helicopter scene with the bus is pretty nice, even if it is fairly unrealistic. |

In No Particular Order
Apocalypse Now (1979) - "The Ride of the Valkyries" Black Hawk Down (2001) - When they go into the city, plus tons more. Blue Thunder (1983) - That big loopy thing Roy baby does frickin rock but the whole film is one big helicopter film. Breakout (1975) - Bronson hired to get Duvall out of jail by Helicopter. Clear and Present Danger (1994) - Harrison Ford grabing the Helicopter. Cliffhanger (1993) - Tons but the end scene more so for it's big bang. Coogan's Bluff (1968) - Not going to give it away but it's amazing. Darkman (1990) - Love the part were Darkman crashes threw the window. Die Hard (1988) - No need to explain Die Hard 2 (1990) - From Helicpoter to Plane. Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) - All shot up on the Candian U.S border. Fugitive, The (1993) - tracking The Fugitive GoldenEye (1995) - Eject. Sphere (1998) - The Ride into the site with Hoffman. Some great ones listed here, for sure--the Apocalypse Now scene always gives me goosebumps.
This thread immediately made me think of "Airwolf" and Jan-Michael Vincent. I was awful young, but I loved that show... |
|
GoodFellas - Henry being followed by choppers all one long, horrible day
The Perfect Storm, with the helicopter rescue scenes. And another one I'd completely forgotten: ...And Justice for All -- more on the funny side of things. |
The flight with crazy Judge Jack Warden in And Justice for All... is a great one. Pacino is a terrific reactor.
And here's a great bit of a dialogue, but the movie it comes from doesn't actually contain any scenes with helicopters...
CAPTAIN (Alan Arkin): Oh, Tony, are you working on the forms on that street vending incident up on...
TONY GIARDINO (Anthony LaPaglia): Yes, Captain. CAPTAIN: Tony? Tony? Tony, I don't want to intrude, but you seem a little down. TONY: Well, Captain, it's about my job. CAPTAIN: Ah. TONY: I'm having doubts about being a cop. You know, it's not like how it is on TV. I mean, all I do all day is I fill out forms and paperwork, I mean, this is what I do. CAPTAIN: It's a point well taken, Tony, but you must understand, although it's not exciting, it is a very important part of our work. TONY: Yeah, but in all my times as a cop, I've never...I've never, like, chased a guy across a crowded city square. I've never hung on to that part of the helicopter. You know that part, underneath, the thing where it lands? Do you, do you know that part? CAPTAIN: Yes, I know that part. TONY: I've never hung onto that. - So I Married an Axe-Murderer I've always wanted to hang onto the skids of a helicopter too. Looks like fun, Man! |
Anthony LaPaglia was great in that movie--the scenes with the Chief are hilarious, and the scene where he tries to commandeer Charles Grodin's car. "You're not gonna bend on this commandeering thing, are you?" Great flick. Another hanging on "the thing where it lands" scene: The end of the first wish sequence in Bedazzled (the Brendan Frazer version). |
Spy Game, in the flashback, when Tyler Durden's character waits until AFTER the last second to plug his target, just after the helo gets out of the way. But that was due to bad flying on the part of the helo pilot.
And, later, I seem to remember he brings down the entire thing with a few AK-47 rounds. Definitely a cool scene. |

i'd say it is a tie in between the matrix crash and the full metal jacket line in the helicopter.

Austin Powers Forward Flipping over the helicopter in Goldmember, a tad unrealistic I realise but pretty cool nonetheless.

I thought black hawk down was a great movie with helicopters (hhhhheeee) . I used to live on a military base in California when helicopters would test their flights ever 20-30 mintues.
I like the Last Boy Scout too, i think that is the one i am thinking about. Some of the scenes from James Bond movies Charlies Angels had a good one too. |
I liked the scene in True Lies. ^^ If the original trailer for Spider-Man had been in the film (where the helicopter gets caught in the web), that would have been cool.
|
--blackhawk down --definately- at every point in the movie the helicopter scenes are fantastic--
|
which bond movie is it (staring roger moore i think) that the bady guy in the wheelcheer is on the roof of a building and james bond picks him up with the bottom of the hellecopter and drops him in one of those big tubes?
i love that bit. ive realy gotta buy all the bond films on dvd. |
That's the pre-credits opening of For Your Eyes Only (1981), and Ernst Stavro Blofeld - the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. baddie from You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever and From Russia with Love as well as being the man who killed his wife in On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the villain who gets picked up on the skids then dumped down an industrial smoke stack by Bond.
|
yeah thats the one! yay
is dr evil modelled on that guy and dr no? coz i always thought they are alike. |
Yes, of course.
|
JennyB got my one. i LOVED the helicopter scene in True Lies. I think that is an awsome stunt. Just how it pulls her out of the limo as it drops of the bridge. Cool.
:yup: Also the helicopter scene at the beginning of End of days with arnie and a tramp hangin from it. That was cool. Then theres Charlies Angels, Doesnt Lucy Lui hang form a helicopetr in that film? i remember it bein quite cool i think. or maybe that was a dream... ;) |
no they all hang from the helicopter in that film. and then they all jump off it when it explodes.
lucy lui........*drool* :licklips: :randy: |
probably
the matrix or in the opening credits of the shining or black hawk down |
Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
In this scene Roger Moore kills his long time nemesis Blofeld. The scene actually starts at 42 seconds if you want to skip the mumbo jumbo?

My fave helicopter scenes have always been in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Besides the scenes at Devil's Tower, there is a very good scene where all the townspeople are waiting for the UFOs to "stop and be friendly". Unfortunately, I can't find any video.

Definitely goes to Apocalypse Now for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmVQzwyWYZ0 The best part is when they play dead and Rambo shoots the rocket launcher at the bad guys. Then rambo delivers the POWS to safety and then f-cks with Murdock! |
Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
What about in 28 weeks/months later??? the helicopter tilted to chop apart all of the "zombies" ... is that possibly.. idk.. but it was sweet.. also in "Cloverfield" the crash was awesome!

Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
These are two memorable scenes I remember, the first in Terminator 2. A helicopter flying low to the ground and under a bridge. Its not that often you see a helicopter manoeuver like that with no help from special effects. During the opening of Transformers when we witness the first transformation. Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
In Black Hawk down when that Elvis song is playing in the background.
The end scenes in True Lies when Arnold fires that terrorist into the building via the missile. |
Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
I don't think any other film can even approach the realism of the truly fatal helicopter crash in the Vietnam War segment of The Twilight Zone movie.

That fatal crash, caused by a director cranking up the boom of his pyrotechnics and blowing the helicopter out of the sky, can be looked at as the ultimate extension of the argument that foul language is now necessary in movies “because it makes it more real” and more nudity is needed on screen so the scene is “more lifelike.” Why not go further and shoot some actors with real bullets for “more lifelike” death scenes? There’s plenty of precedent for it—the ancient Romans used to kill on stage slaves and criminals who portrayed doomed characters in plays. We could even have audience participation—call-in votes like they have now on those reality talent and dating shows, only in this case nobody knows who got the most votes—not the public and certainly not the actor—until he or she is run down, gunned down, garroted, or hacked to pieces on screen. C’mon, we all know of actors we don’t like or are tired of! Adam Sandler wouldn’t last out the first few months. Personally, I think we should go even further. I remember a TV interview in which the war-veteran director of The Big Red 1 said the only way to have made the war scenes more realistic would be to have a rifleman behind the screen occasionally firing haphazardly into the audience. Now that would be the ultimate reality! When Freddie and Jason are slicing and dicing on screen, someone in a similar outfit would go out in the audience and cut off a couple of heads. Or someone in the balcony could take a hit while enjoying the “realism” of the Normandy invasion in Finding Pvt. Ryan. Ahh, movies—more realistic than ever! |

The best IMO is Terminator 2 when the T1000 comes through the window and tells the piolet to get out.

WOW!! I'm so surprised no one mentions "FIREBIRDS" with Nic Cage and Tommy Lee Jones. I wouldn't call it "Oscar Worthy" but it is what"TOPGUN" is to fighter jets, it is to helicopters.

Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
I can't believe UF hasn't dropped this into this thread yet. After a night of running around trying to escape from Demons and just after a minute or so of our hero riding around on a dirt bike with a samurai sword chopping up said demons, a Helicopter inexplicably drops through the ceiling. Love that. Great flick by the way. Watch it. Demoni (1985)

Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
I was reading a kind of autobiography of Chuck Norris. Chuck said that when they filmed the ending scene of Missing In Action (I can't remember if its the first or second one), there was a mistake. When Chuck led the POWs into the ocean, about waist deep and the helicopter picked them up, then Chuck was supposed to grab the ladder, and get lifted a couple of feet over the ocean. At that time they were supposed to switch to a stunt guy. The pilot however, either didn't know this or thought it was the stunt man, and he flew off. Chuck said that he remembers clinging to the ladder as tight as he could, and wondering if he could survive the drop. So the final scene is actually Chuck Norris hanging onto the ladder as the helicopter flies high over the ocean. I thought that was pretty cool.

Was dying for somebody to say that. The scene in 28 Weeks Later is a referance to that awesome scene in the original Dawn Of The Dead. Loved the helicopter scene in The Matrix, too. The shot where both Neo and Morpheous simultaneously leaping towards each other is epic. |

Not a whole lot, but there was some very skilled flying in The Stunt Man (1980)
|
Hands down...It has to be the amazing rescue scene from Black Sunday, a made-for-TV movie in the early 70's. I think it was that scene more than anything else that fueled my love for helicopters. You can easily view it on Youtube by searching for "helicopter vs airship". FANTASTIC!
|
Another great (but poignant) helicopter scene is from another made-for-tv movie called "Birds of Prey", starring David Janssen. The plot is about an ex-WWII pilot who is working as a TV news traffic reporter and he witnesses a bank robbery getaway in another helicopter which is flown by a Vietnam vet. The scene is a at the very end of the movie. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.
|
Apocalypse Now was a good choice mentioned on this discussion. There isn't a lot of high tech imagery and fancy flying like in Firebirds. But it is the first movie that came to mind, partly because of the amount of exciting chopper footage. The scene(s) I am referring to is when the chopper squadron attacks the Viet Cong village. The anticipation is already building as the Robert Duvall character fires up his men for the mission, as the helicopters are preparing for takeoff. I thought it was cool when the guy played the calvary charge on the bugle as the choppers departed.
The scene escalates further as the music blares from the helicopter loudspeakers to scare the enemy, now that the village is in sight. Then there is a scene when the villagers are running around the village preparing for the attack, while you can hear choppers coming. There is very good camera work depicting a hairy landing zone, and the fierce exchange between both sides. IMHO, this is one of the best helicopter scenes in terms of action, excitement, steady build-up of viewer anticipation, and realism |

Do Autogyros count? If so, then Bruce Spence and his shenanigans were pretty good in The Road Warrior.

My favourite helicopter scene is from Jaws 2
http://www.freewebs.com/underdogmovi...helicopter.jpg The final sequence in The Satan Bug involving a phial of deadly bacteria rolling along the seat of a helicopter as it spins out of control above L.A., is also satisfyingly tense. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XJYH5dE5s-...%2Bchopper.jpg |
Re: Best Helicopter scenes on film
One of the greatest scenes with helicopter - "Reign of Fire" with base jump and dragon.
|
Love helicopter scenes. The previously mentioned Apocalypse Now scenes are among my favorites, especially the opening montage with the helicopters in the jungle blending with the ceiling fan blades.
Could also add the scene in Planet Terror where the pilot mows down the zombies with the helicopter rotors, although previously done in 28 Weeks Later. Also, the scene at the climax of Underworld: Evolution, where Selene and Marcus fight by the crashed, still-running chopper and the resulting carnage of that scene. |
I am new here. This forum looks like what I have been searching for.
I seen a helicopter chase movie I think maybe 25-30 years ago? It has a 500 or 520. It was the most amazing flying I ever seen. The good guy flew along a river and flew into the brush or jungle to hide from the bad helicopter. Then at the end he was chasing a car thru the city streets. He almost crashed, when his skid hit the street. I have been trying to find the name of it. I wish I could remember who the pilot was. I thought it was Larry Hagman, but I searched for him, with no luck. Now I just found the name, DEADLY ENCOUNTERS, and an ad on ebay of a pic said it was on CBS in 1986. Ebay did not have the movie, just still pics. I hope someone can help me find this movie? I would like to find it on a dvd, if possible Thanks |
