Another really good movie that i just saw a little while ago, i could of put on my list. It was Interview with the Vampire, it was a really good movie.

Kahiri 05-11-02 02:28 PM

Great Merciful Zeus, this is a tough question to answer. Five movies that I REALLY REALLY enjoy watching and that I can think of off the top of my head are...
1. LOTR:FOTR (But of course...)
2. In and Out (Kevin Kline's scene where he's trying to get in touch with his inner man never fails to have me rolling on the floor.)
3. The Shining (I first saw it when I was 12, at 1 in the morning, and when I was alone in the house for the night with only my 4 year old brother for company...creeped me the hell out. I slept with all of the lights on that night.)
4. Jurassic Park (Ahhh...fond memories.)
5. Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (This is on here simply because it is one of my favorite movie scores ever and I liked the martial arts stuff.)

If I thought about it long enough, probably most of this five would be replaced, but these are ones that I like.

patti 05-11-02 11:28 PM

The Manchurian Candidate
Young Frankenstein
The Jerk
Psycho
The Usual Suspects

firegod 05-11-02 11:49 PM

What?? We are supposed to be movie lovers and no one has mentioned The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, Rear Window, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Citizen Kane or Schindler's List?? What is wrong with this site???

I thought I would just say that before someone else did. hehehe :)

Marcellus 05-12-02 01:04 AM

Granted those movies you mentioned, firegod, are very good movies, but, personally, i dont always find the best movies to be the most enjoyable

firegod 05-12-02 01:26 AM

My message was kind of tongue-in-cheek. I wanted to beat anyone to the punch who felt like telling us what uncultered slobs we are. I personaly don't think those movies I mentioned are among the best; I just realize that most big movie buffs feel that they are.

Marcellus 05-12-02 02:05 AM

Sorry, it's sometimes difficult to pick up on tone through a message board

anyway, you're right, i think a lot of the time people are pressured into likeing what's considered sophisticated, etc

I think Silver Bullet's movies are just fine. Granted I haven't seen Run Lola Run or all of Lawrence of Arabia. Its really, really hard to choose just five movies. I think I can only state my favorite movie of all time: The Wizard of Oz

CrazyLegsMC 05-12-02 06:02 AM

lol I no, silver bullets choices were all valid contenders.

I know that after i post this, im gonna thionk of SO many better movis to put on but ne way... btw, these are no paticular order, just by top 5 movies

1) LoTR

The Silver Bullet 05-12-02 06:42 AM

Mine aren't valid 'contenders', although, sure, I'm glad you think that I've got relatively good taste.

This is a favorite films thread, not 'best' films thread.
It's completely opinionated. No competition at all.

There is a thread around here somewhere called "Best and Favorite", which might interest some of you.

firegod 05-14-02 11:26 AM

I happen to think that "best of" lists are completely opinionated as well.

Ozma 05-14-02 06:44 PM

1. The Wizard of Oz
2. Moulin Rouge!
3. The Nightmare Before Christmas
4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
5. Ghost World

I happen to think that "best of" lists are completely opinionated as well.
Yeah, but you could say that the movies mentioned in 'best of' lists are contenders.

Karl Childers 06-21-02 03:47 AM

1) Sling Blade- this movie is in a league of its own. It is at once poetic, religious, subtle, riveting, Shakespearian, funny, and totally realistic. 'Extraordinary things happening to ordinary people' has never been so well-portrayed.

2) GoodFellas- an epic good time. So much is going on, for such a long time, that you can watch the film a dozen times in one month, and not be bored. The best combination of quality and entertainment of any existing film.

3) Raging Bull- a flawless character study of a fascinating, yet tragic, historical figure. The performances are breathtaking, and the B&W mode makes it even more realisitic and gripping.

4) True Romance- the greatest modern American crime drama. Contains the most intense scenes of any movie I have witnessed. Controversial, gut-wrenching and politically incorrect all at once. Don't let the idea of Christian Slater as the lead steer you away. This movie is an American original. It is brutal and pure attitude-- without wallowing in MTV, over-the-top, stylized-garbage imagery that infects most of today's efforts.

5) Cool Hand Luke- so this is the tale of a born loser? I love it. Very, very few soul searing dramas this good have ever been made. The subtle Christ motifs throughout the film add a great dimension to an already poignant and dark tale. The 'man with no eyes' has become an all too recognizable figure of silent authoritarian brutality. Kennedy won an Oscar for best supporting actor. A must see that fails to look dated.

:rotfl:

1. Man on The Moon
2. Fight Club
3. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
4. Batman Returns
5. Saving Private Ryan

and honorable mention goes to Howard the Duck, which I know isn't a GOOD movie, but I've seen it more times than anything by Martin Scorese or any of the acknowledged classic movies out there. It's fun, in a weird, Meet the Feebles, Plan Nine from Outer Space way. And I totally love Lea Thompson and her big 80's hair...

PopcornMonster 06-22-02 07:18 PM

Howard the Duck Rulez

Howard the Duck Rules, I made my girlfriend watch that movie once back in college, it is pretty cheezy but it still a classic. It was one of the first movies I remember watching.

You know what else is a great movie, but they end up playing it way to much on tv is "A Christmas Story" that was the first film I remember seeing in the theatre. and the first one I saw in the drive in was E.T.

"Tin Cup" another great movie that gets played to much

I meant Ep 4 and 6. I know they are 2 films, but some people just class them as one to save writing them all. They are all quality.

YES GLORY!!!

I think it's perhaps Brodericks best work. I'm also a HUGE fan of Freeman. I love a good war movie, and this one also has a good message for truth, equality, and respect. I love the part where the racist union soldier yells, "Give 'em hell 54th!" Great movie, I've seen it at least 10 times.

How can the message be for "truth, equality, and respect" when the movie presents itself as the story of the black soldiers, but focuses mainly on the white characters? I don't mind that it's historically dishonest, but I think it's hollywood grandstanding of the worst kind - a movie that's ostensibly liberal in its purpose, but displays the type of conservatism unparalleled in war movies from other countries. And perhaps the real reason the racist union soldier yells "Give 'em hell 54th!" is because he, like many other soldiers, regarded the blacks as cannon fodder so the "real" forces could move in and take the base. Perhaps.

I don't think that was the directors or screenwriters intent when having that gent yell that line. Remember that was not real footage of the war, but a representation of what the director wanted, a moment where the audience can get a good goosebump or two. I didn't look that deeply into it, I'm sorry...maybe I'm too simple. As far as it being conservative, I'm not sure what you mean. About it being viewed through a white's perspective, you're right. Ebert complained about that also, as for me...I'm not that picky. So it was through a white mans eye, it could have been better seen through Washingtons' character, but it wasn't done that way. As far as I can tell, most of the actors got equal screen time. Does that mean its a bad movie? Broderick, Elwes, Washington, Freeman, and Braugher, were all exceptional. They were all very believable, and the war footage was excellent. I even love the score that was written and performed for this film. Most of all for me though, was that it made me feel something. That's why I go to the movies.
Anyway, I respect your opinion, because there are plenty of movies others have loved that I saw as total trash. Case in point: Adam Sandler movies:sick:

BTW, I'm bummed because I won't be able to chat in real time with you guys because even though my post says 2:49AM 8-1-02, it's actually 6:49PM 7-31-02 for me, I guess thats better than 7-31-84:p

firegod 08-01-02 01:55 AM

I thought Glory told the story from more than one perspective. I also think there was every bit as much focus on the Washington and Freeman characters as the Elwes character, so I don't see how the movie focused mainly on the white characterS, with emphasis on the s, there. Would it be nice to have a real good civil war movie with the biggest character being black? Sure, but it is also pretty damn nice to have Glory, if you ask me.

Top 5...or whatever

Absolute top 5 movies....

1. Interview With a Vampire. (It totally mauled (har har) the book but it was still good....and Brad Pitt looks good in black.....uhm..what was I saying?)

2. Fight Club. (That rolling ball with the frowny face cracked me up)

3. Blade (Coolness factor 5, and the only movie fully capable of almost entirely masking the lack of a good plot line).

4. The Matrix (Hard not to like it when you're stoned).

5. The Usual Suspects (Kevin Spacey is good. Enough said).

New Dragon Gate Inn

Cast:
Tony Leung Ka Fai, Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, Donnie Yen, Lawrence Ng

Director:
Raymond Lee, Ching Siu-Tung

The film, which is a remake of the 1966 King Hu movie Dragon's Gate Inn, tells a simple, yet interesting story. An evil eunuch named Tsao (the always entertaining Donny Yen) wields great power in China. As the film opens, we learn that he's holding two small children hostage, hoping to use them to lure an enemy out of hiding. However, the children are saved from the villainous Tsao by Chow Wai-on (Tony Leung Kar-fai) and Yau Mo-yan (Brigitte Lin). After a fierce battle, our heroes then take off into the hostile desert with Tsao's men in hot pursuit.

All eventually wind up at the Dragon Inn, a desert hotel run by Jade (Maggie Cheung), a woman with her own agenda (which includes getting Chow Wai-on into bed, robbing various guests at her establishment, and turning some of them into the main ingredient of the hotel's meat buns) who plays both sides for her own profit.

And the end fight scene is the amazing..

Oh well here goze:

1) 'lawrence of arabia' (yay, best yaoi ever! heh.)
2) 'aguirre: the wrath of god' (kinski's monologue at the end is the best i've ever seen: 'i will marry my daughter, and we shall found the purest nation this world has ever seen', heh, redickaliss.)
3) 'modern times' (chaplin's best silent film is good enough for me)
4) 'atlantic city' (cool portrait of a city where i've lived, with excellent crime story thrown in for good measure.)
5) 'horus: prince of the sun' (miyazaki and takahata, their most epic animated work was done together, in the 60's and 70's, contrary to popular belief that 'princess mononoke' and 'grave of the fireflies' are their best.)

too many that didnt make the cut, how about a top fifty or 100 list?

I love that movie! My favorite Chaplin of all time. From what I've seen, either your a Keaton or Chaplin person. I like them both, but am partial to 'ol Charlie. :D

hmmm, i just cant decide which i like better, slayton. chaplin's more accessible, and i think his labor and purpose is a bit more, well, inclusive. not just for his talent, but also in that his message goes beyond the medium itself, i think chaplin was probably the greatest comedian of all time.

i think keaton's talent is more spontaneous, and he's definately the more talented physical commedian, though his stuff is far wierder, and doesnt hold up as long as chaplin's, not least because he was more obsessed with the medium itself. so it took a while, but i eventually came to see that keaton's passion is just less obvious, but no smaller, particularly after seeing 'the playhouse.'
