Re: Top Ten Films Since You Were Born
Way to make me feel young, guys - going from 1990 onwards (and leaning more towards "favourite" than "top", to be honest. Tough picks though, I came up with about twenty that are all interchangeable)
10. Naked (1993) 9. Trainspotting (1996) 8. Sonatine (1993) 7. Unforgiven (1992) 6. Miller's Crossing (1990) 5. Shaun of the Dead (2004) 4. Clerks (1994) 3. Dazed and Confused (1993) 2. The Big Lebowski (1998) 1. GoodFellas (1990) |

I had a difficult time narrowing it down from about 25 movies and came up with 12. I'm not going to try to take another two away... Even though a lot of this is probably cliche and very homogeneous.

The Elephant Man (1980)
The Wild Bunch (1969) Blade Runner (1982) Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - the year I was born THX 1138 (1971) (2004 Director's Cut) Excalibur (1981) No Country For All Men (2007) Pi (1998) The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (2007) On deep reflection I have determined these are my favorite films. They hold the most meaning for me. I tire of none of them, in fact only want to watch them again and again. Perfection in film, from my POV. |

Since the founding of Ghibli in 1985, many of the best movies came from there. So, in my top favorites 10 since 1989, more than half would be Ghibli:
Ghibli: - Princess Mononoke (1997) (1st best) - Spirited Away (2001) (2nd best) - Only Yesterday (1991) (3rd best) - If you Listen Closely (1995) (4th best) - Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) (6th best) - Porco Rosso (1992) (9th best) Not Ghibli: - The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) (5th best) - There Will Be Blood (2007) (7th best) - Schindler's List (1993) (8th best) - Pulp Fiction (1994) (10th best) Honorable mentions: Mulholland Drive, Dreams (Kurosawa), City of God. The best movie since the fall of the Berlin Wall, hence, best movie of the present globalized world is also perhaps one that reflects more than any other the problems and realities that humanity is passing on it's history after the end of the Soviet Union: One of the world's most grave problems is global warming and its effects on the global ecology, so a movie with an ecology theme, though seems a bit silly, fits perfectly to some of our most pressing global concerns. An animated Asian movie also reflects our post Berlin Wall world. The short 20th century, from 1914 to 1991, was a century centered on the continents bordering the North Atlantic, Europe and North America, but the "long 21st century", that began in 1991, is the Asian century. Thus, an Asian movie is the best representative for this new century. Also, live action film is a 20th century archaic construct, instead animation reflects more our postmodern era. The high fantasy elements also reflect our current preference for movies set on exotic settings instead of the mundane settings of classical hollywood pictures: The top 10 highest grossing movies of the last 15 years have been all science fiction or fantasy. Thus, a high fantasy movie is also more consistent with our current world and reflects the differences between our current world and the world of the short 20th century (1914-1991), which loved stuff like Gone With the Wind, Casablanca and Citizen Kane. Nothing could be more apart from this world than something like Princess Mononoke (imagine showing that to a 1940's audience!). While Pulp Fiction has been described as a post-modern film, Mononoke fits this description even better, considering it is a near perfect synthesis of our current zeitgeist. |
