Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

Just thinking to myself really about who is the best actor in the world. And going by common conception of the films he has been in, and what they mean i would say that Di Caprio is the best in the world right now. Obviuolsy the likes of Cruise, De Niro, Pitt etc would argue that and so would their fans but if you think of the varied roles he has done in his last few, from The Departed to Blood Diamond. I would be very willing to say he is currently the best actor in the world. WHo would you say it is, or do you agree with me.

I'm going to have to join the 'no' brigade here.

Even only including actors who have appeared on screen in the last couple of years to fit with the 'right now' criteria, what about Daniel Day Lewis, James McAvoy, Robert De Niro, Heath Ledger, Geoffrey Rush, Anthony Hopkins, Tony Leung, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Tom Wilkinson, Adrien Brody,Hugh Jackman, Jack Nicholson, Cillian Murphy, Guy Pearce....

There's 15 better than DiCaprio right there.

I will say (with the exception of Whats Eating Gilbert Grape) I did not like Leo untill Gangs of New York, and even there DDL stole the show. He is getting better and he will hopefully get better with age, but best? By far : NO!

Edit in: Looking at his film history, why does he seem to be in so many "Historical" or films based on actual events?

Aviator
Titanic
Gangs
Blood Diamond
Iron Mask
Catch Me if You Can

The list goes on to include a few films yet to be released.

Sean Penn
Daniel Day Lewis

Are just two of many that come to mind who are "better" performers than he is.

He's a good actor, but he does tend to give quite samey performances, especially over the past couple of years.

ballstouweboll24 10-13-09 12:14 PM

In my opinion no but he's definately up there with the best but of course it is only a matter of opinion. He faces real competition from,

Sean Penn,
Sam Rockwell,
Kevin Bacon,
Dustin Hoffman,
Johnny Depp,

His last great performance for me was The Departed and he was very good in Blood Diamond and Body of Lies not to mention his excellent younger performances in Basketball Diaries and What's Eating Gilbert Grape

He's still young enough though where he could fit more great performances into his career though and push himself more and I'm waiting to see how he does in Shutter Island

GodsOtherMonkey 10-13-09 05:08 PM

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

Leonardo is easily one of the best actors out there. I would put him in the same category as following actors listed below.

Russell Crowe
Anthony Hopkins
Daniel Day Lewis
John Hurt
Cate Blanchett
Robert Duvall
Mickey Rourke
Tim Roth
Robert Downey Jr.
Tommy Lee Jones
Gary Oldman
Benicio Del Toro
Jeff Bridges
William Hurt
Johny Depp
David Thewlis

So, he may not be the best – but they don’t really get any better.

Best performances (that I have seen from him)

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Gangs Of New York (2002)
The Aviator (2004)
Blood Diamond (2006) personally I am not familiar with a Rhodesian accent, so I have no idea how accurate his attempt is. That counts for about 5% of his performance anyway. He was totally believable in this part, in my opinion.
The Departed (2006)
Body Of Lies (2008)

I think he will go on to be remembered as one of the greatest actors of all time.

Best Actor? - well, this guy can do anything.

The fact that you never cared for him has nothing to do with his level of talent. Looking at his career history and achievements, he's obviously very gifted.

Let me put it this way, Godfather, I think he's better now than he was when I posted last year and you just reminded me that I did. I still believe that Philip Seymour Hoffman (ya know, Dustin's "love child") is the best male actor going, but Leo's climbing the ladder.

It's hard to argue that P.S. Hoffman is a ****ing genius, and it's hard for me to say whether or not him or DiCaprio is "better". I think as far as American actors go, the best we have working are...

DiCaprio
Depp
Penn
P.S. Hoffman
Day-Lewis
Russell Crowe

Those are the guys who immediately come to mind for me. I do put DiCaprio at the top, partially because of personal bias. Still, I don't think acting really gets any better than The Aviator, Gilbert Grape, Revolutionary Road, etc, etc.

No, I'm not just some lovesick fanboy. His work is what convinced me to respect him as an actor, and it didn't happen overnight.

The Prestige 10-16-09 01:07 PM

He is good. Really good, but nowhere near the best. He isn't on the level of a Sam Rockwell, Paddy Considine or Vincent Cassell imo. I would say that he is a little bit better than Christian Bale though.

Rockwell is very good, but still hasn't done enough resonant work to be called one of the best actors of his time (in my opinion). Vincent Cassell is really good too.

And I would agree that DiCaprio is better than Christian Bale, although I do really like Bale and I never used to.

In terms of pure talent I feel Rockwell is superior, you can't peg him down because he is not a former pin up and therefore does not get higher profile parts.

michaelcorleone 10-17-09 04:03 AM

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

I could care less about whether or not he was a former pin-up. That's a cheap jab.

He should do more Moon and less G-Force, that's all I'm saying. I'm not referring to the size of the roles, I'm referring to the quality of the roles. Lots of low-profile actors avoid doing crummy mainstream roles.

Classicqueen13 10-17-09 10:49 AM

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

DiCaprio is a talented actor, but I wouldn't agree he's the best in the world. I can't say who's the best. I just have personal favorites.

Favorite actor who still works: Harrison Ford
:)

I think that Rockwell has done enough to be considered one of the best. He hasn't had too many leading man roles, but he is often the best thing in the films he appears in and there is just such sincerity in his performances and he never appears to lay it on too thick, even in his more peculiar roles. I've always thought of him as a better man's Edward Norton. I mean look at the work he did in Assassination Of Jesse James, Moon, Choke and Galaxy Quest. He was also decent in Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind despite the fact that it's a very flawed film. I just think his body of work speaks for itself. Another couple of leading man roles and he'll probably get some oscars.

I love Bale, too. He is very good and shows flashes of greatness. But he has been inconsistent as of late and hasn't improved much I feel. Dicaprio, on the other hand seems to always be improving. When I said 'a little better than Bale' I needed to emphasis the word 'little'. I think that they are almost on the same level but Dicaprio has proven to be the more consistent recently.

I'm not disagreeing that Rockwell is good. I think he's very good, just not one of the best. My opinion on that may change with time.

I'd have to join in with the no party. But I do rank him in What's Eating Gilbert Grape as one of my favorite acting jobs of all time. But that's one movie. Also I agree with Christine there's no way to say one greatest actor. Too many genres and different limits a movie allows you to act.

To speak the truth, the sky has presently been ornamented with brilliantly glowing stars. It is not possible, I am sorry to state, for me to select anyone from the following:
Anthony Hopkins, Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day Lewis and many more.
At times these actors have stunned me with the strength of their talent.

You're from India yet you haven't mentioned Amitabh Bachchan the great leading man of the past forty years or Irfan Khan, an excellent character actor, 'King' Khan himself, the Tom Cruise of India or any other Indian star.

michaelcorleone 10-23-09 02:16 PM

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

To be honest, all the Heath Ledger praising gets on my nerves. Yes, he showed some promise towards the end of his career with two great mainstream performances (Brokeback, The Dark Knight). At the same time, he did piles of movies like A Knight's Tale, Lords of Dogtown and 10 Things I Hate About You. He could have been an excellent actor, but he didn't live long enough to take his career anywhere.

Just because someone died young, it doesn't automatically make them one of the greatest actors of all time. James Dean was truly great (although Brando was greater), and River Phoenix was brilliant too. Heath Ledger was good.

Lwo is a very goode, perhaps great, actor. But to say he is the best right now when other actors include names such as Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Robert DeNiro, and Anthony Hopkins, among many others, is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

To be fair, though, he is really, really good.

Almost as much as all the Jack Nicholson praising, who showed promise early in his career with some avant garde performances (Easy Rider, Carnal Knowledge).

ALthough Jack is still capable of great performances (see The Departed), he is more often a caricature of himself.

I guess I'm the only one who thought his performance in As Good as it Gets was horribly overrated.

michaelcorleone 11-15-09 03:14 AM

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

Well, ontop of The Departed and As Good As It Gets, look at About Schmidt... one of his career-topping performances.

Unfortunately, the film industry is often unkind to older actors, no matter how legendary they are (see De Niro, Brando, Dustin Hoffman). It's not a matter of their acting ability... you can't really "lose" that. I think it's more a case of having nothing to choose from.

Re: Is Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor in the world RIGHT NOW?

No, Can't really pick a best but Daniel Day Lewis would be a good start. I really like Leo. Basketball Diaries was a reat movie, Departed was excellent and he made a real good Howard Hughs but I just can't give him the top spot.

No, you're not the only one. Personally I thought the whole film was horribly overrated, but then, I thought it was crap, so even mild praise would've been overrated, IMO.

If you use that logic on a regular basis you'll find yourself killing nearly every active thread on the forum. The only thing you could have said that would have been less productive would be "I don't know, I haven't seen every film released in the last 2-3 years". Some things go without saying. Jump through the loop hole and think of somthing interesting to bring to the table.

I hope I haven't offended you, but your comment was as pointless as it was silly.

As for the thread "rite now" kills it for me. I don't really know who's working "rite now" and who I can include in any potential choice. As for Leo, I'm going to go ahead and say he had one hell of a 2010 with shutter and Inception. I can't think of an actor who had a better 2010.

I think the "right now" part is a way of acknowledging that though there are lots of great actors still alive, their best days are behind them, whereas DiCaprio might be at his peak.

I still don't think that makes him the best actor in the world, but...I think he's probably one of the best. And I say this as someone who really disliked him early in his career, though in retrospect it had way more to do with the types of roles he was taking and the types of people who liked him than it did with the performer himself.

Leo is good, but I think that the nod should go to a DeNiro or Hoffman. Johnny Depp should also be considered. Leo may be in the top 10.

TONGO 04-21-11 01:21 AM

No that would be Daniel Day Lewis probably. He outacted him off the screen in Gangs Of New York. Leo is an incredibly underrated and gifted actor, but no not the best. Sadly he wouldve grown more in his craft if he never went a-list so fast, annd more challenging roles would have gone to him. Im sure that Downey Jr grew more as an actor in those bazillion indie movies he did. Now those 2 should do a movie together - Robert Downey Jr & Leonardo Dicaprio. Whoa! Id pay to see that

Gunny 04-24-11 03:36 AM

Leo probably isn't even in the top 50.

Top ten? I don't think he's better than Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman, Robert DeNiro, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Duvall, Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson and Sidney Poitier.

And that's without even really giving it much thought.

The thread does say "RIGHT NOW".

The Prestige 04-24-11 03:34 PM

He's a very good actor. Very good actor indeed. But not the best in the world. Not by a long shot.

Yes. It does. Everyone on my list except for Newman and Poitier have done movies in the past 5 years (Poitier has done some within 5 years but they've been doccumentaries). And almost everyone on the list has done a film within the last year or two.

Most popular or highest profile doesn't equate to 'best'. Also, throw Viggo Mortensen in the mix, man's overdue an Oscar before Leo

I think Denzel Washington is the top right now obviously, and Russell Crowe has to be up there. So for DiCaprio, possible top 10 seems about right.

I also think Robert Downey Jr. is very underrated and is a better actor than Leo.

Creatively? No. But in terms of career management he's an absolute genius. Few have managed to use their luck as well as he has. He's living proof of how valuable brains and mental stability are in Hollywood cause so few actors have them...

I find him a really strange creature in terms of range and it's the reason I haven't lost interest in him yet. Usually, when you say that an actor has great range it means that they can do a large range of roles convincingly and consistently.

Whereas Leonardo has a long list of limitations, but every time he does something far outside his comfort zone - he kills it. No matter what it is. His range is a never ending bag of surprises - it seems potentially limitless but he has to be thrown into the deep end to unearth each new facet. On the other hand - give him a role even remotely similar to something he's done before - and he reverts back to his limitations.

For instance I don't need to see Wolf of Wall Street to believe the reviewer who wrote that he displays never before unearthed gift for physical comedy. I'm sure he does - cause it's fresh to him.

My temptation is simply to say, "No" and be done with it...

...but I'll try to add a more personal addendum:

I just can't get the image of the little kid from "Growing Pains" out of my head while he's acting.

Which doesn't help.

What's with the constant DiCaprio praise? "He is the greatest actor. Why he hasn't received an Oscar yet?" Maybe because he has yet to pull off an extraordinary performance?
I mean, yes,he is a decent actor and he does a good job but I think that he doesn't completely opens for the role,I feel that he doesn't completely loses himself for the role,he doesn't experiment and take it to the extreme.DDL does,Phoenix did it in The Master and Gladiator,Nicholson did it in The Shining and Cuckoo,Pacino did it in Dog Day Afternoon and Scarface,Ledger did it in Dark Knight. That what make these actors great and that what makes DiCaprio worse. He plays by the book. And he has ton of mediocre performances like Shutter Island,Inception,Departed,The Beach,Blood Diamond etc.
DiCaprio had a chance with The Aviator, that role was great but I felt like the main character was Leonardo Dicaprio, not Howard Hughes.

Well it would be a bold statement to say he's the best but he is definitely up there. He always gives stellar performances , and he's one of the finest actors working today no doubt about it. He'll definitely get an oscar, maybe even more than one....eventually.

The Wolf of Wall Street might be that performance you are talking about. I've already heard plenty of buzz that it is his best performance to date, which is saying a lot. But IMO, his work in Django Unchained is spectacular. Totally got lost in the character. That wasn't DiCaprio; it was a crazy slave owner who thought that black people were less than human. Great stuff.

I really enjoy Dicaprio as an actor, and the movies that he's been in. I think he works tremendously hard in each and every role, and he will certainly get an Oscar one of these years.

I agree bud. He really does do great in almost every role he's in whether its Shutter Island,Inception,Django Unchained,The Departed, or even Titanic. I cannot wait to see Wolf on Wall Street, hope this performance finally lands him that much-deserved statue.

I agree. He was absolutely phenomenal in Django Unchained. He made Calvin Candie an instant classic villain. People can say what they want, but I think it's the Calvin Candie character that will be remembered from that film, thanks to Leo's wacky performance!

It seems that he plays another expressive role in The Wolf of Wallstreet and I'm very happy with that. DiCaprio is at his best when he doesn't need to restrain himself.
With his charism, I think he's perfect for outgoing, semi-comical characters with preferably a darker side.
