+ amazing looking setting
+ great story
+ amazing ending
+ harrison ford
- there is about 40 minutes of people sitting , walking , standing or doing nothing
- it says on the back of the dvd that the narration was taken out - which might have made the long boring pauses of people sitting/walking actually watchable
- colors for the most part look bleak

D+ it's a great idea for a movie but the pointless and boring scenes make the movie feel like it should only be about an hour long

I'm not too sure about this but in a review thread shouldn't you actually review movies? not just list 4 or 5 things about it then give your grade

Re: MeatwadSprite's Review Thread

You are entitled to your opinions, even if this does include rating Rush Hour 3 higher than Blade Runner, but you can't call this a review thread if you aren't actually going to write reviews. How can you assume that the cut of Blade Runner with the voiceover is better than the Director's Cut without having seen it? Or even read anything about it, since you mention reading it on the back of the dvd for the first time. :suspicious:

voice narration in a movie is a major issue - it adds a whole new layer to the movie and makes it much more entertaining than if your just watching the stuff happen without narration

fight club A+
goodfellas A+
apacolypse now A
muppets in space A- (with commentary O_O)

Absolutely. But it really depends on the narration itself as to whether it is any good, or fits the mood of the film. Seeing as it is such a major issue, and I agree with you on that point although no other in this thread, surely you would need to actually watch the version with voiceover narration before assuming it is better?

Meatwad… I hate to be mean… especially to someone I think might not even be old enough to watch some of the films they're supposedly reviewing … however, thus far, none of your posts in this thread would be considered actual reviews and all should have been posted in the
Movie Tab II thread…

If you really want to learn how to write reviews, I suggest you read some of the ones posted by various members in the review section at the top of this forum…

Re: MeatwadSprite's Review Thread

You're shooting out these split second "reviews" so quickly that people can't respond. You posted a pretty strong and vague opinion against one of my all-time favorite films, and I'd like to get the opportunity to defend it. I'm referring to your Requiem for a Dream one:

C+ the coolest looking anti-drug thing ever
Okay... Requiem for a Dream isn't mean to be "cool". Nor is it an "anti-drug" movie... just to start somewhere. All of the stylistic choices are used to contribute to the frenzied, frantic pacing of the story, which is a huge part of its originality. The hip-hop montages, the Snorri-cam shots, the fish eye imagery, etc... all of that was used as a means of telling the story in an effective way. Aronofsky never intended to make a "cool" film with Requiem for a Dream.

To call it an "anti-drug thing" is a disgrace. That's lowering the film's intelligence to mainstream level. This film doesn't say "don't do drugs". It's an examination of addiction's effects on the human spirit. That's a whole lot different. You can take from it what you will, but this movie has no direct "anti-drug" scenes to speak. It presents a horrifying reality to contribute to the poetic whole of the story, but never makes turning kids away from drugs the main ambition.

Second of all, you said the "characters are worthless". There's no basis for that whatsoever. Although the character development is admittedly scarce, that's because the story is a whirlwind, and these characters are sucked along with it. However, we do see their dreams and regrets through several key moments in the film (I don't know if you were watching). Harry and Marion, for example, show a mutual dream of making each other's lives as happy as possible, and Aronofsky manages to portray this in a perfectly believable way. Sara Goldfarb feels she has nothing to live for now that she gets no attention from her family... she feels like an insignificant old woman. So she turns to her addictions: diet pills and the possibility of having a spot on television. They steer her away from her feelings of isolation, but ultimately drive her insane. Tyrone is a sad little boy who was never given guidance, as is displayed in the ESSENTIAL flashback where he shares a tender moment with his ignorant mother.

Last remark I'd like to comment on: "ends in the middle of nowhere". This has probably the hardest-hitting closure of any film I've ever seen. We see all three characters reduced to their lowest states, curling up in the fetal position in their mindsets of complete loss. They have all been defeated.

I can't allow somebody to rate Rush Hour higher than Requiem for a Dream without at least saying something... so there you are.

hahahaha yeah... that's basically what I said. I'm just going to leave this thread be...

The rating of Pi is ridiculous too, and I don't know what the hell he means when he says that The Godfather Part II is "dominated by close up shots". lol

+ not only is it the best looking pixar movie to date , but it's one of the best looking movies ever
+ great story , a bunch of twists that never rely on the generic plots you find in animated movies these days
+ fast paced and though it's rated G - it's more furious than a lot of R rated movies
+ good ending

A+ an unexpected hit , pixar was almost dead to me with incredibles and nemo - and all the crappy CGI movies coming out these days , but you can put this in with toy story and a bugs life

You just responded to one fraction of a sentence in a reply that was literally paragraphs long. Is that all you have to say on it? Halfway through that paragraph that you took a choice snippet from, I explained that the little moments of character study were essential and effective. The three young characters weren't only "out to get drugs". If that's all you got from the film, then you missed the point. I'm sorry, but I can't argue this subjectively.

But...that is a totally valid motivation FOR A DRUG ADDICT. Get it? Meanwhile, they have other motivations, which are clearly defined in the film. Nothing really happens to them?? Did ya...SEE THE MOVIE? I am thinking you didn't. A whole ******** "happens to them."

Oh, I am still wondering. Are you going to do any reviews in your review thread? I still see exactly zero.

I don't think I'd agree with this, but even if it were true, isn't that to be expected, to some degree? Isn't it realistic that drugs would dominate their thoughts and overwhelm their existing motivations?

EDIT: Sedai beat me to it, and used way more punctuation.

I'll just leave this one alone... I'll assume that if you give a movie C or lower, it means it very well could be a masterpiece.

Yeah, I don't know where that came from. For one, all Pixar films do well. And for another, it's actually underperforming relative to other Pixar films (it's struggling to crack $200 million domestically).

Then again, this is probably the only guy in the world who owns Like Mike AND Magnolia, so all bets are off at this point.

You can go into detail about the alleged "generic qualities." I've heard you refer to characters as having no development when we all think they received a great deal of development. I'm not sure what would stop you from elaborating on what happened, why you thought it was generic, and what could have happened that wouldn't be generic. Then, we can talk about those specifics, and actually have a discussion about facts, rather than you just saying you hate a great movie and us being all aghast.

Anyway, you don't seem to go in-depth with any of the movies you're "reviewing," whether you like them or not, so the explanation above is moot. Around these parts, we don't usually consider a grade and four bullet points a "review."

I've posted on Rotten Tomatoes thousands of times, and I don't think there's much similarity at all. You probably feel otherwise because I imagine you were met with similar disapproval there, yes? If so, I can assure you it's got nothing to do with either this forum or that one; it's because of the views you're expressing, and the way you're expressing them.

It's not enough to just have an opinion. Anyone can have an opinion. Having an informed, insightful opinion (and being able to discuss it) is a good deal more challenging, but this forum exists for just those sorts of things.

There are lots of people here with unusual or unpopular opinions. But many of them have reasons for what they believe, and actually take the time to explain them in ways that make sense. If you do that, I promise you'll find this place to be very accepting.

:yup: I couldn't agree more with what Yods has to say. It's one thing to say that movie sucks, but it's a totally different thing to say this is why the movie sucks.

You can't throw things out without having reasons for your opinions. Well, you can but the vicious cycle will continue on and you'd be the first to have a red light saber...

- i wouldn't expect mike judge to make such a formula following story which i'm sure he probably didn't even make out to be from the start but with such a high budget was probably messed around with by higher ups

C+ it's unique futuristic setting is great , but the story is laughable

+ a few amazing scenes
+ has some dumb music but mostly good
+ a couple laugh out loud hillarious parts
+ cool narration style
+ star wars jump
- characters start to devolope but seem to cut out and not be enough
- boring and dumb scenes with the principle trying to get into his house
- a couple of generic scenes
- some scenes drag on too long

B you should see it

You have to keep in mind that this was the 80's. Of course the music will be a little "dumb", but that's what kids listened to back then.

+ the first hour is great
+ the scenes where you can't tell if it's actually happening or part of the movie
- the last 2 hours are just incoherent garbage
- visuals are very boring , and mostly dark in the last 2 hours
- a 3 hour movie that drags on so long it should have been about an hour and a half

D- barley qualifies as a movie rather than random footage

When's this thread gonna get a sticky? :bawling:

Coming Soon: Tatty reviews flower arranging, tennis, BMWs, The Conservative Party and loads of other stuff he obviously doesn't really like or quite possibly understand one jot...

...in a sentence

It's got legs, I tell ya! :D
