The Simpsons Movie
Here's my review. Can't recommend this one enough to anyone who's ever enjoyed the series.
The Simpsons Movie
![]() They nailed it. Fans of The Simpsons have been hearing rumors of a movie based on the series since the mid-90s. But with each passing season the importance of doing the series justice grew, and the film spent the better part of a decade in development hell. After almost fifteen years of rumors and false starts, Matt Groening and ten other writers have produced a film worthy of the franchise. The story -- which, as any Simpsons fan knows, is not especially important -- concerns the growing pollution in Lake Springfield. Homer pushes it past the point of no return with a silo full of pig excrement. Enter the Environmental Protection Agency, whose funding has apparently quadrupled somewhere between the real world and the film's story. Their solution is to cover all of Springfield in a giant plastic dome. It goes without saying that the town quickly devolves into chaos, and that its inhabitants are none too happy with Homer. Though plotlines on The Simpsons are never anything more than a framework for the jokes, the film's story holds together nicely. It is equal parts absurd and epic, and allows for a number of elegant cameos and references to the series' more memorable moments. It will make perfect sense to someone new to the universe, but still has plenty of visual easter eggs for the devout Simpsonsite to enjoy. The voice acting is predictably brilliant, and the animation manages to look crisper and fuller than usual without losing any of its crude charm. The most striking thing about The Simpsons Movie, however, is how edgy it is compared to the series. Freed from the constraints of network television, Groening and Co. use the bit of extra leeway that a PG-13 rating provides to push the envelope further than they have in years. Everything about the production oozes confidence. The jokes are more biting, and the satire is more fearless. Fans can be forgiven for feeling that The Simpsons has dulled a bit over the last few seasons. When the show premiered, it was smarter and more irreverent than anything else on television. These days, the emergence of quasi-knockoffs such as Family Guy have diluted our sensitivities to crazed antics by placing a higher premium on edginess than comedy--they're all edge and no point. The Simpsons Movie, however, walks that delicate line between absurdity and stupidity which has always been the hallmark of the franchise, and proves that there's still no replicating its unique brand of comedy. As smart as it is ridiculous, The Simpsons Movie was a long time in the making, but well worth the wait. One of the best television shows in history has become one of the best comedies of 2007. |

Great review. Your writing is top notch these days...
Thanks! :) |
Re: The Simpsons Movie
Thanks man, I really appreciate that. :)

Re: The Simpsons Movie
Good review, but I've never thought The Simpsons was funny, especially the last decade or so, and so I can't imagine I'd like the movie.
|
Re: The Simpsons Movie
Just came back from seeing the Simpsons. It was better than I thought it would be. It was kinda like watching a tv episode, except that this is much more well-thought out than a regular tv episode. The audience seemed to really enjoy it as there lots of laughter throughout the show and then lots of clapping at the end.

Re: The Simpsons Movie

Re: The Simpsons Movie
That was a great review, Chris. Thanks for writing it. I'm planning to see it tomorrow.

Re: The Simpsons Movie
I havn't laughed that hard in a while. The whole bit when people were running out of the church and moe's- that may have been one of the most brilliant pieces of Simpsons humor in the last decade.

Re: The Simpsons Movie
When I was a child I thought a dome around the whole world would protect us from Global Warming ahahahaha isn't that so funny!

Great review Chris! Thanks for sharing... :)

Re: The Simpsons Movie
I was kind of disappointed with The Simpsons Movie. It wasn't a bad film, some very funny bits, but I couldn't help thinking they could have done more with a movie than what is basically an extended episode with the by now familiar 'Homer is a bad husband/father but redeems himself through suitably madcap antics' plot. Ok, so the Simpsons isn't really about the plot, but in that case, they could have gone a bit more off the wall, imo. There were lots of great characters from the series that didn't really get a look in, which I thought was a shame. I think if I'd seen it on tv I might have liked it better, but it cost me about £1 for every ten minutes, and I don't feel I got my money's worth...

Re: The Simpsons Movie

Still don't think it is a great movie, but I can't get 'Spiderpig' out of my head... :rotfl: |
Re: The Simpsons Movie
You're right in that sellouts don't tell us whether or not it's good; but no film in wide release sells out after several weeks without some bizarre mitigating circumstances, either. Anyway, word of mouth is strong, and Rotten Tomatoes has it at 88%.

Re: The Simpsons Movie
I haven't been a Simpsons fan in in a long time and I usually find Family Guy, American Dad and South park funnier while Simpsons hasn't made me laugh out loud in years.
I laughed my ass off watching the Simpsons movie. "Good-bye, everybody!" |
Re: The Simpsons Movie
unfortunately, The Simpson's is probably the best of the summer movies so far. Seemed to be made especially for kids, with none of the witty one liners and jokes for adults to enjoy.
Tho Spider-Pig is a LEGEND! LOL http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r.../spiderpig.gif |

One adult oriented quote stood out when I read your post... That whole scene where Ralph Wiggam after seeing Bart's full frontal while skateboarding naked through Springfield: "I like men now!" http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/1...hwiggumno8.gif THAT made me LOL!:D |

Re: The Simpsons Movie
This is one hell of a funny movie!! This must be the funniest movie I have watched so far this year ( I guess this year is for action movies). The animation was quite the same as the TV series however it had some computer rendered stuff also which was needed to make it a bit unique. The movie plot wasn't that different also from the TV formula of having different openings then jumping into another story. Must commend the writers as they really thought of the story.
The storyline was really funny. With the exception of Marge who had the least part in the story, everyone of them had something that can be followed. The antics and comedy of The Simpsons really still lies in the stupidity of Homer, he'll surely make you laugh in this one. For me he is probably the heart of the whole cartoon hahaha!! Its a must see movie for me (as I followed series ever since) and won't waste your money. You will surely laugh with this one even if you haven't followed the cartoon series =) Happy Viewing! |

Re: The Simpsons Movie
it's one of my old time favorite classic cartoon...
|
Re: The Simpsons Movie
By way of full disclosure, I just edited this review and bumped the rating from to . I was probably being too cautious for my own good initially, and after watching the film again on DVD since, I appreciate it even more. Given what the writers were up against, they really did hit this one out of the park, and that warrants a higher rating than I first gave it.

Re: The Simpsons Movie
Hey! I can't belive I never reviewed this, I saw it the day it came out on Midnight, you sould have heard the crowd, it was pretty awesome but in my opinion didn't live up to the hype.

And of course, they all cheered at the mention of Pittsburgh, making the later "Woo, Springfield!" joke even funnier in that it seemed to mock our audience alone. |

Yeah, I saw it at a Midnight showing, too, and the crowd was into it. They were quiet (except for when they were laughing), attentive, and seemed to get a fair number of the references. They burst into applause the moment Ralph stepped out of the 20th Century Fox logo, signing along. Re: The Simpsons Movie
:D i loved this movie it was awsome from the beginning to end it was F***n amazing xD:cool:
|
Re: The Simpsons Movie
I hated this movie. It was funny for a bit, but the series has really gone down hill. They should stop making the show anymore.
|
Re: The Simpsons Movie
What year was the last "Simpsons" TV episode you watched?
|
Re: The Simpsons Movie
Yeah, as I mentioned in the review, it's become chic to talk about The Simpsons has gone downhill, but that really doesn't apply to the movie at all -- and not to the last few seasons, from what I've seen of them. I think it's something that may have been true for a year or two, but keeps being said long after it's stopped being accurate.
