In no particular order:

Clerks II
Little Miss Sunshine
V for Vendetta
Inside Man
Thank You For Smoking
X3 : The Last Stand
The Break Up
The Devil Wears Prada
Slither
American Dreamz
Hard Candy
Snakes on a Plane
Talladegga Nights
The Descent
Crank

and those to avoid
John Tucker Must Die
Superman Returns
My Super Ex-Girlfriend
See no Evil
Invincible

gohansrage 09-07-06 07:11 PM

X3 : The Last Stand?

I have to disagree. The "plot" was transparent. The acting was dreadful. The pace was appaling. The visuals were not good enough to save it. The writing was abysmal. And so on.

Little Miss Sunshine is the best movie this year so far. Hands down. It might finish as the best movie of the year, but it has a lot of comptetion coming up.

Strummer521 09-07-06 11:47 PM

Honestly I haven't seen any movies from 2006 yet that I have found remarkable in any way.

Antoine Lemonne 09-08-06 05:20 AM

Another good movie is ' Eight Below ', liked it very much.

dancingnancie 09-09-06 06:40 PM

Little Miss Sunshine, hands down.

I also enjoyed V for Vendetta very much.

BobbyB 09-09-06 09:05 PM

Same here. I thought Little Miss Sunshine and 16 Blocks were good, but neither are "Best of The Year" material.

Nexus 09-12-06 03:36 PM

The New World, though a 2005 film, was released here in the UK in January 2006. I also loved Brick.

I think the worst film of the year was X3.

Holden Pike 09-12-06 03:40 PM

Manderlay (Lars Von Trier)

Yep.. I rate this movie pretty high. Didn't like Pirates 2 though. It was awful.

Sedai 09-13-06 10:41 AM

So far for me:

The Illusionist
The Descent
Superman Returns
V for Vendetta
A Scanner Darkly

That said, nothing has blown me away so far this year.

Pyro Tramp 09-13-06 11:07 AM

Superman Returns was very average i thought. Glad you liked The Descent though.

Sedai 09-13-06 11:33 AM

Yeah, as I said, Supes didn't blow me away, really. I liked it, though.

The Descent was intense! Great film-going experience... Glad I saw it in the theater.

firegod 09-13-06 12:22 PM

I haven't seen very many new movies lately. I'm very pleased to see so many people praise V for Vendetta. After watching it 5 times, it is now my favorite movie ever.

Captain Driftwood 09-14-06 02:13 AM

I would have to say that Clerks II is by far the best movie so far this year, which is why it tops my list. I think that it takes a lot of sack to come back after 12 years with a sequel, especially since the first was so radically different in regards to budget and visual style. There was certainly the chance of a backlash with part two, but it exceeded expectations and was totally true to the spirit of the original. Clerks II still has a lot of competition coming up, but at this time, it owns 2006.

the-bitterness 09-14-06 06:15 PM

What was so bad about Superman Returns?

I am going to agree with you for the most part. But taking Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn over Superman. I do not understand what people did not like about Superman. The plot was not very original, but have you read a Superman comic? Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was awesome, and the part when his sidekick couldnt find White Castle was hilarious.

Taladegga Nights was not a good movie. It had some good laughs but was not as funny as Beerfest. Beerfest was awesome.

Little Miss Sunshine was really the best movie of the year so far. Such a good cast, writing, story....

What the hell were you smoking, and what movie were you watching!?

I never really get a chance to catch any movies at the theatre these days. The last movie that I saw and enjoyed was Pirates 2, no where near the best, though.

jrs 09-14-06 08:07 PM

Superman Returns was Syngers own take on the legend of the Man of Steel. He did it with stride and perfection, along with Spacey as Lex Luthor. Some may put it down, but those who do don't have the right frame of mind. :nope:

of the so-fa--r-watched movies i've watched-so-far this year, art school confidential was pretty good. good make fun of murder mystery, twist endings suck, but the thing i really liked was the film-within-a-film of the inept art school roomate, even if it served no purpose except as cinematic foil.

better than ghost world, see you this comment mr. joseph strummer? if so you should see the movie.

I thought Mos Def was really good in his role. The writing may not have been the best, but the movie was fun and so I atleast think it was enjoyable.

The Hills Have Eyes
Slither
The Proposition
Severance
Snakes on a Plane

Final Destination 3

Really? That movie put me to sleep. Although everytime that chairman of the board, of whatever he was, came on the screen and shouted, I was startled awake.

straylight 09-29-06 08:55 PM

My personal favourite for this year is Lucky Number Slevin

VeronicaJ 09-30-06 05:37 AM

I'd go for V for Vendetta or Xmen 3, havent been in the cinemas a lot due to my schoolwork, but i think 2006 isnt such a great movie year.

da vinci code and the illusionist are the best so far

TheUsualSuspect 10-03-06 12:37 PM

Nothing above an 8.5 this year from me, yet.

So far A Scanner Darkly is my favourite film.

Monkeypunch 10-03-06 01:36 PM

My favourite this year so far?

Superman Returns. I am just a huge Superman fan, and I tend to liek anything Superman, except for Superman 4, which was hideous.

Also liked V for Vendetta, The Proposition, Hard Candy, Taladega Nights, X-Men 3...I think thats all the good movies I saw this year. Tis not been a good year so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing The Departed on friday, cause Scorsese is always good, and it has Jack Nicholson.

Movies to avoid?

Crank
The Covenant
The Black Dahlia (though read the book. the book is genius)

juno101 10-03-06 03:20 PM

the only movie that really stands out for me this year is A Scanner Darkly...great movie

any one seen Children of Men? Is it worth me handing ove my 6 quid?

KnicksRIP 10-03-06 04:29 PM

United 93 with a bullet inside a bullet lodged in the chest of another bullet. I thought Little Miss Sunshine was the best thing I had seen this year until that movie came along and crushed all my hopes and dreams. Awesome.

Black Matrix 10-04-06 05:04 AM

Hey all this is my first post i dont know if its in the right forum or anything, however i have forgotten the name of a movie, i remember seeing a trailer for it a few months back and thought it looked interesting. I am pretty sure it was a love story set over 1000 or so years, starting in ancient times then progressing to the future, also it had something to do with a tree of life, i remember seeing a tree incased in crystal somewhere in the trailer. does anybody know the name of this film ? any help would be greatly aprectiated

Yes, we all know the name of that movie: it's The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. It was booed at it's screening at the Venice Film Festival last month, and it's currently scheduled for release at the end of November.

ToBeOrNotToBe 10-05-06 03:03 PM

Little Miss Sunshine... Hands down...

The Break Up Was Pretty Good.

dog.gon.gun 10-09-06 11:03 PM

The Departed is easily the best movie I've seen so far this year. I doubt anything will top it.

The Departed just took the top spot for me.

Booed by some, yet it also got a standing O by others...

"The Fountain was screened at the 63rd Venice Film Festival in early September, where the film was booed by some critics while others applauded it.[11] However at the public showing (one day later) it received a standing ovation." - Wiki

RT has it at 50% though... We shall see...Story sounds interesting, anyway.

Hey guys i have a question for yall. I have a project to do for my humanities calss for college and it is over art. I picked films and the topic i was assigned is sadness, so basically I am looking for sad movies. I need three movies and i visual aid for the project. What do yall think would be some good choices for my project? I would like my 3 movies to be pretty populat so the class knows what i am talking about when i am speaking to them. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

*Cough*thread hi-jacker*cough*

I guess I will try to help... even though I will feel used afterwards.

Million Dollar baby
(Eastwood, 2005)

Old Yeller
(Stevenson, 1957)

The Green Mile (Darabont, 1999)

Life is Beautiful (Benigni, 1997)

Dancer in the Dark (Von Trier, 2000)

Trois Couleurs : Bleu (Kieslowski, 1993)

...and on and on... lots of stuff out there...

BobbyB 10-12-06 02:42 PM

Thread hi-jacker, indeed.

Pay It Forward, American History X and The Green Mile are three pretty good bets.

ORO 10-12-06 03:13 PM

I'd plump for BAMBI.

texasguy 10-12-06 07:19 PM

Thanks guys, I think I will go with Old Yeller, Green Mile, and Bambi. Great advice guys.

Sedai 10-12-06 07:30 PM

I would go for Dancer in the Dark if you want to get crushed by a film...

Also, See Requiem for a Dream if you want to experience some visceral cinema..not so much sad, per se. Harsh ****, though...

I know, like, showing compassion for human beings who abuse drugs is insane! What would Jesus do? I'll tell you, what: he'd tell those fu*kers to get a hold of themselves while telling everybody around them not to feel sorry for them.

Try a heapin' helpin' of empathy, sometime. It's deee-licious and faaan-tastic.

You are entitled to your opinion :yup: i always feel sorry for junkies there life is usually hell, drugs turn people into liars, cheats and thieves, i dislike movies that make out drugs to be fun and  i found this movie frightening and realistic :yup: not all movies are about nice things :yup:

BobbyB 10-13-06 12:20 AM

No, no, no, no, Holden & Nebbs. You're missing what I'm saying.

I know it's sad, but I don't think a movie should be made out of watching a bunch of people pushing off and having a good time and then watching their supply disappear and so they do anything and all end out miserable. I just don't think it makes a good movie.

I found the movie to be compelling, haunting and brilliant. It single handidly changed my friends life forever.

I take it you're not a fan of any drug film then?

BobbyB 10-13-06 12:33 AM

This is the only film I've ever watched that focused mainly on drug use, so I don't know.

I just thought it was mind numbingly boring and didn't have the least bit of emotional connection to it.

Sedai 10-13-06 12:34 AM

Requiem for a Dream is a powerful, top notch film, IMO. The score is fantastic, the editing is creative and interesting, and Ellen Burstyn gives an incredible performance. I found the subject matter quite interesting, actually. Worst movie you have ever seen? I don't see how you can justify that, on a technical level, anyway. Really, I think it affected you in a way that made you feel uncomfortable, hence your aversion to the film... which is totally understandable. As I said, it's powerful stuff...

BobbyB 10-13-06 01:01 AM

No, I can guarantee it wasn't too much for me. You really have no idea how bored I was.

Everyone was telling me "Oh, it's so rough. It's tough to watch" and then I put it in and didn't have a hard time watching it at all. I just thought it sucked.

lynch 10-13-06 07:11 AM

the best of 2006 so far for me is, Lady In The Water.

next year however, i believe it's going to be David Lynch's, INLAND EMPIRE

no doubt.

matthews_world 10-15-06 11:07 PM

Lucky Number Slevin had a pretty cool premise and the ending actually blew me away.

koolaidman90 11-16-06 02:10 PM

My favorite movie of this year was Accepted and my least favorite was Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning

John McClane 11-16-06 02:19 PM

My favorite movie of the year so far is The Prestige. I'm a fan of dark films and the leading actors were excellent with their roles. First time I saw it, I didn't exactly know the pretty much obvious secret. In my second viewing, I laughed at how stupid I was but, I loved the film even more then the first showing.

Berkus 11-16-06 04:19 PM

i cant really decide which was my absolute favorite this year, i did have high hopes for superman returns and x-men the last stand but they didn't really make it to my favorites, at the moment the only favorite i can think of is Clerks 2 just because i love kevin smiths films unless i can think of something else or something new comes out before the new year thats the movie im going with

osSig 11-20-06 03:17 AM

I really enjoyed Superman Returns - some of the scenes in it were just absolutely sick! Cant wait to pick it up on DVD pretty soon, with all the special features and everything.

maybe give a few more "drug abuse" movies a try...perhaps the problem is not with the movie, but the genre in general...

I'd recommend these:
Spun 2002
Trainspotting 1996
Another Day In Paradise 1998
The Salton Sea 2002
Drugstore Cowboy 1989

Pyro Tramp 11-21-06 04:12 PM

Casino Royale
The Departed

The Departed
Clerks II

I would have to choose The Departed for the best of movie of 2006 so far. I enjoyed Thank You For Smoking alot as well. But nothing I have seen this year besides has wowed me. The closest movie to wowing me this year would be The Departed. And why does everyone think so highly of V For Vendetta? I thought that movie was OK at best.

Requiem For A Dream is a very good movie. Could it have been better? Yes, much better. I won't deny it; the script wasn't good and neither was the character arc of all 4 characters. The editing on the other hand was great, as well as technical aspects of the film. The lighting was good, the blocking was good, and the production designing was good.

DavidBremner24 11-24-06 09:47 AM

Although nothing has been spectacular i really enjoyed these five films

Pirates 2, Inside Man, The Prestige, Borat, Talledaga Nights

undercoverlover 11-24-06 02:07 PM

id have to say the prestige and im just praying that the industry will have a drop of sense to not try and squeeze a sequel out of it

I haven't really been seeing many new movies this year, but from what I have seen, The Departed is easily the best movie of 2006. Other than that, I've seen X-Men 3 which I thought was horrible, Jackass 2 which was fun but nothing special, and Inside Man which was very good but not even close to The Departed.
