IGN.com, for one.

Jon Favreau (Elf, Made, Zarthura) is set to direct. Nobody has been cast as Stark yet, though Favreau says they won't be going for a big superstar like a Tom Cruise, who was attached the the long-gestating project for years.

Typo...

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment will kick off the 2008 (not 1998 - lol) summer movie-going season on May 2nd with Iron Man, the first motion picture to be produced by Marvel under its alliance with Paramount, it was announced today by Rob Moore, President, Worldwide Marketing, Distribution, and Operations, Paramount Pictures; Michael Helfant, President and COO, Marvel Studios; and Kevin Feige, president of production for Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios is a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment,
Inc. Jon Favreau will direct the film.

The Iron Man film will be produced by Avi Arad, creative advisor to Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige. Executive Producers are Ari Arad, Mr. Favreau and Louis D'Esposito. This project, the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, is expected to be financed through Marvel's $525 million revolving film financing facility and distributed under Marvel's overall distribution arrangement with Paramount. Iron Man will mark the first production under Mr. Arad's newly launched production company, Avi Arad Productions.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Helfant said, "We're very excited to lock down the release date for Iron Man, Marvel's first independently produced feature film. We couldn't have asked for a better partner than Paramount to work with on this very powerful character franchise." Mr. Feige added, "We're thrilled to be launching the summer 2008 movie season with Iron Man. Marvel has had great success with the first Friday in
May -- 'Spider-Man' broke records on that first Friday and 'X2' debuted at the top of the box office charts as well. We're looking forward to extending that track record with Iron Man and are extremely pleased with the progress of the script, the production team we are forming and the initial production designs."

Moore said, "Marvel is one of our most important partners and Iron Man is one of their premier heroes. We're thrilled to be launching our relationship -- and the summer season in 2008 -- with this movie." Based upon Marvel's iconic Super Hero, the film will follow billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark, who confronts the sins of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. Equipped with a high-tech suit of armor, he becomes Iron Man to combat evil on a global scale.

Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, Iron Man is the story of Tony Stark, a driven inventor and executive who straps on billions of dollars in armor and weaponry each night to fight crime, terrorism and corporate espionage.

Tom Cruise would have been perfect.

Yay! They're using the Granov suit! :D

KnicksRIP 07-24-06 06:28 PM

I would have preferred the original suit. You know, the silver one that looked like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz? ;) just kiddin'

They announced recently that the villain will be The Mandarin. Although not entirely surprised, I felt rather mixed about the announcement.

Actually, I'd love to see the original suit (and I ain't kidding). In the recent Extremis run, Adi Granov painted Warren Ellis' flashback to the first appearance of Iron Man, and it was glorious. For the first time, it actually looked like a dangerous suit, and not just a clunky costume.

If only it could show up for at least five minutes... :D

Holden Pike 07-24-06 10:46 PM

Favreau says they are paying homage to the original silver suit. It'll at least show up in blueprint drawings or something. Keep your eyes peeled...you know, in the summer of 2008.

LordIdiot 07-25-06 09:34 PM

i believe favreau said that there will be a few suits in it, showing the progression stark goes through to develope the completed prototype.. or something like that. kinda like an "Iron Man Begins" type thing.

Terminator734 07-26-06 03:18 AM

they need to make up their mind about what director they want its the 3rd one already

and i dont think Jon Favreau is a good choice they need someone who is an experienced director especially for a movie of this caliber

In the case of a movie like this that doesn't count couse the budget of the movie is going to be something like 150-200 Million Dollars and any Director can handdle a move of this caliber.

Then let's stick Uwe Boll on the film, and see what he does with it.

I don't think Michael Bay can handle the camcorder at a seven-year-old's birthday, much less Iron Man. By the by, any honest to goodness questions and concerns about the movie, you can ask Favreau directly on the MySpace page specifically devoted to the flick (click HERE).

Now come on we have all seen what peter jackson can do but I suppose being one of the most sought after directors right now marvel couldnt afford to pay him

cmitchell 09-18-06 06:16 PM

There is no way that this can be good...

Sleezy 09-20-06 02:17 PM

Apparently, these are rejected 3-d rendered Iron Man concepts for the upcoming film. The initial design at the bottom looks awful, but the revised design at the top (more Granov-esque) looks pretty good.

Robert Downey, Jr. is Tony Stark.

From John Favreau's own mouth (fifth post down)

It'd be interesting to see Black Sabbath's song of the same name used in the soundtrack! Can't you just imagine Ironman flying around in some badass way with this playing, dolbying up the cinema?

I could also see Ozzy playing a cameo role as a slightly mad henchman / evil dude's assistant too. Hell, he wouldn't even have to act too much to do it.

Holden Pike 09-30-06 04:53 PM

Robert Downey Jr. is one of my favorite actors around. I'd love seeing him in anything, including as Tony Stark.

Yeah, man, bring it on.

I wouldn't be surprised if that actually had a lot to do with why he decided to take the role. He seems to have really come to terms with his past recently, and I'm guessing he wanted to seize the opportunity to further accept his prior addictions in a constructive manner. I mean, he's got to know that he - more so than anyone else, really - is best-suited to play Tony Stark. And because Stark is a superhero who struggles with the same kinds of addictions, I'm guessing Downey and Favreau are going to really confront those issues. Iron Man has always been about a morally small man finding purpose and salvation through his own work, and though in different ways, I think that dually applies to Robert Downey Jr.

Which is why I'm so very excited about this whole project.

Mmmhmm, it's funny when you find coincedences with actors having problems ^o).

Tragiccity619 11-17-06 03:33 PM

I don't like the casting of Downey. I have never seen him in a film and liked him in it. I'm excited about the movie though, so maybe this one will redeem him for me.

Tony Stark was captured in Vietnam by a warlord named Wong Chu. A booby trap actually exploded, lodging a bit of shrapnel inside Stark's heart. To keep his heart from failing, Tony built a pacemaker of sorts, and incorporated it into the suit (the first of which also allowed him to escape Wong Chu). So the glowing blue thing is that pacemaker, and the suit he's forging is the Mark I he'll use to escape.

Not all of it. He'll adopt the more classic red and gold for most of the film, I imagine. Early designs leaned closely to the current Adi Granov design.

In fact, here's the teaser poster. Not much difference.

The first two designs shown here were early rejected concept models for this film.

Iron Man has always used a wide array of different costumes for different situations.
The Tin-man grey one just happens to be his prototype.

They're not terribly fresh or entertaining anymore, but as long as Sony Pictures keeps throwing barrels of cash into these films for marketing, people will see them by the busloads. Here's hoping something new and good derails a tired juggernaut.

This may not be the appropriate venue for this particular conversation, but i believe firmly that Spidey can and will be revived with a new director.

As for Iron Man, i do apologize, but i simply cannot keep my hopes up for this one. I'd like to, but there have just been so many comic book movie dissapointments. When they came out, the hurt just cut so deep, im not sure i can make that kind of commitment again. Not yet.

I feel your pain, man. I really do. But this one just seems so much on the up-and-up that I can't help but get excited. I'm a big fan of Jon Favreau's work, and I've been nuts over Robert Downey Jr. in recent years since his career turnaround. The guy is just a gem. Compound that with the involvement of Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard (the latter of which has been turning out some outstanding performances since he started getting play), and it's hard to doubt this movie's potential. I just hope the script is polished up as it should be.

There has never been a black Iron Man, but Terrence Howard is playing Jim Rhodes, a military man who eventually becomes War Machine, using a modified (read: loaded with guns and projectiles) version of the Stark armor.

Tony Spark!? Matt Dillan!? Clearly you're not awake yet. Just to correct you before I go any further, it's Tony Stark and I'm not going to hit on the mispelling of Mr. Dillon's last name, but I will say one other thing...NO.

RDJ was cast a while back, while at first I was skeptical, the shots since the announcement have had me biting my tongue, he truly looks the part, much like when Tobey Maguire was cast as Peter Parker, there was skepticism and all that jazz, but the first shot of him in character was like it had been taken straight out of the comic.

All in all, this movie won't be Oscar winning material by any means, but it will be at the top of my list for next year.

Looks pretty amazing, I was very skeptical about Downy playing Stark (He did nice job in Zodiac too I thought), but if the trailer is any indication of the movie I love it...sarcasm, alcoholism, genius...yay!!!!

Ok, I admit, I liked the trailer. A lot. I'm not a fan of Iron Man, and I only know a bit about him, but as an outsider, I'm fairly excited.

Well, here's a bit of information about the current comics version of Iron Man...

I'm a huge comic book fan/collector and I gotta say the funny thing is, anyone and EVERYONE who reads comics is loving what they've seen of the Iron Man movie so far.
Yet Iron Man, the comic book character, is extremely hated by most comic book fans ever since he started the Marvel Civil War last year by enforcing a super-hero registration act on the general super-population throughout the Marvel comics line.
Marvel writers were accused of writing Iron Man out of character with the way he's been acting as of late.

Tony Stark, now head of SHIELD, along with other registered superheroes, actually turned against every superhero in America who didn't want to reveal their secret identities to the government (and who can blame them for not wanting to do that).

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8...registrcw8.png

They physically beat down and arrested otherwise good decent super-folk and imprisoned them potentially for life without even a trial in a gigantic prison built on an asteroid in Reed Richard's Negative Zone just because they wouldn't unmask (Spiderman was originally on Stark's side and revealed his secret identity to the world to help promote the registration act but soon switched sides when he found himself questioning Iron Man's tactics).
Stark even started up groups of SHIELD agents (dubbed 'cape-killers') specificly equipped to take down any superhero who didn't comply. If an unregestered hero saved lives in public or foiled a criminal's evil plans SHIELD agents were alerted immediately and a squad of cape-killers dispatched to arrest the hero at any cost.
He even went so far as to employ actual supervillains to assist in hunting down these heroes.

Stark also cloned the thunder-god, Thor (from a strand of hair Tony had held on to since their first meeting many years ago) to help in his quest to control the superhero population which resulted in the android-clone killing former Avenger, Goliath.

Captain America lead the opposing side of heroes against the registration act and Iron Man almost beat him to death at one point.

After losing the Civil War, Captain America was shot and killed as he was being lead into court to stand trial.

Currently, in Marvel Comics is the World War Hulk tie-in series where the Hulk has returned to Earth angrier than ever before after Iron Man, Reed Richards, Namor, Dr. Strange and Black Bolt (whom along with Professor X have manipulated a great many significant events throughout Marvel's history as the secretive masterminds known as The Illuminati) launched him into space to get rid of him a couple years ago.

Many comic fans have been very verbal in what they would like to see Hulk to do to Iron Man in his revenge. The general consensus is Tony Stark deserves every bad thing that may happen to him at the Hulk's hands.

But still, despite being the most hated superhero in Marvel comics today, his upcoming movie is favored by all.

As much as I think Robert Downey Jr is going to do wonderfully, I am not looking forward to this film. It seems a little too much like, "Alright let's just put him in a suit of armor and blow some **** up! Sound good?" I'll guess we will wait and see....
