Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Movie Poster a Day with JayDee This is an idea I had for a thread a long while back but somewhat forgot about, and was then reminded of when Sexy did his countdown of 100 posters he liked. I've always loved and been fascinated by movie posters, considering them a real art form. So I thought I'd share some with all my MoFos. I love a whole variety of different types of movie posters, so this thread should be quite a varied mixture of posters; beautiful posters for classic movies, lurid posters for trashy movies, surreal and bizarre posters from Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, East Germany etc), posters for 50s B-movies that always promised more than their budget could possibly deliver etc. For the most part I will be avoiding the main, recognisable posters for well known films. Whenever I do include a poster for a popular film it will either be a foreign design, a lesser seen variant or one created by the ever burgeoning community of artists/fans who post their stuff online. On top of that I will include posters for films that most people have never seen or even heard of. My reasonings for including posters could be beautiful art, a clever idea, eye-catching weirdness, something really funny, a terrific tagline etc. Basically any poster I post is one that for whatever reason I find entertaining or interesting. I thought this thread may also help to encourage me to try and stick around more regularly, giving me a reason to post at least once a day. Though as people who know me will not be surprised to hear, I already know I'll miss some days here and there. But I'll try my best to keep it updated fairly regularly. I will admit though that the thread may well die a quick death. How long I keep it going will depend on a few factors; how much interest it generates, how long I can bothered with it, how many posters worth posting I can find etc |
Good to see you buddy!

September 13th When it comes to posters for Jaws, pretty much every single one of them focuses on the terror of the shark (the teeth, the fin, the blood etc). This one goes the opposite way with a much more restrained design. Instead it's like a travel poster or a postcard for a seaside resort, presenting the calm before the storm. The detail about this poster I love is the black fin hidden in the woman's parasol, hinting at the impending danger. It's a touch that I didn't even notice originally. On top of that it's just a beautiful piece of art from the man generally regarded as the premier creator of alternative movie posters. Steven Spielberg is such an admirer that he owns a print of this poster, and also purchased several prints to give to friends. |

Interesting idea for a thread. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

September 14th Eternal Sunshine... is perhaps unsurprisingly one of the most popular subjects around when it comes to alternative movie posters, very much appealing to those with an inclination towards the artistic side. There are a lot of great designs out there, some of which I will likely post in the future, but I went with this one to start with. What really got me is the error message which I thought was just very clever and funny. http://i.imgur.com/xCqXgwz.jpg Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004, d. Michel Gondry / Artist - Lauren O'Neill) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Cool poster, excellent movie.

Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Wow that is clever.

Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Love the idea JayDee. I really enjoy fan art posters. Make sure you add some Wes Anderson. ;)

September 15th They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. However some pictures make that seem like a very conservative estimate. I give you...Hell in a Bottle. Binzume Jigoku (Hell in a Bottle) (1986, d, Yoshihiro Kawasaki) |
I don't think I've ever even heard of that movie, but that certainly is a unique image.
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Awesome thread, JayDee. Glad to see you find something to keep you active and invested in. I'm sure it feels good to do something that takes you in the direction of your love for movies instead of your ongoing complications. I'll be visiting this thread then and now for sure!

Oh and I don't think we're the only ones to not be aware of the film. On imdb it has been voted on by a grand number of 7 people!!! |

She's in a similar position to a young woman I saw in a pornographic film recently. Except there was a gang of well built young men spraying her with a sticky substance from what appeared to be a third leg.

Between your reaction and the fact that it's the least repped poster leads me to believe that, in the words of Marty McFly, I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are gonna love it.

September 16th It's tough to decide just what the best thing about this poster is. Is it the simple but powerful image? Is it the film's provocative title? Or is it that astonishing tagline? Actually it's not that tough after all is it? It's got to be that tagline. Is the Father Black Enough? (aka The Night of the Strangler aka Dirty Dan's Women aka The Ace of Spades) (1972, d. Joy N. Houck Jr.) |

And I did say it would be a real mix of stuff. For today's poster I think I'll find a balance between the two, a popular well-known film but with quite a bonkers poster |
September 17th Well I said I was looking for a bit of a bonkers poster, and Poland is always a good port of call for that. How about this for a striking image? I could talk about how the poster wonderfully expresses the brutal nature of boxing. Or how the monstrous figures capture the dehumanising effect of the watching crowd; after all they're basically just cheering on two guys to beat the hell out of each other. But it's me so I'll just say look how cool it is!!! http://i.imgur.com/F0oLwC4.jpg Raging Bull (1980, d. Martin Scorsese / Poster Origin - Poland / Artist - Leszek Zebrowski) |

Meh, thats the first one I dont like, but this is the greatest thread IN. THE. WORLD!! :yup:
Anybody at Movie Forums a movie poster collector? Like a real collector who has posters worth hundreds of dollars or more? Ive only met one person that did, someone I worked with. He looked like Oliver Reed. |

September 18th The Rio Paralympics come to a close today so I thought I'd mark the occasion with this poster. Admittedly the film's title may not be the most sensitive, it's a tad blunt. However the poster itself celebrates those with disabilities, showing that you don't have to be able-bodied to kick some serious ass! I've also included a close-up of the illustrations at the bottom of the poster so they can be easier seen The Crippled Masters (1979, d. Joe Law) |

September 19th I wasn't planning on repeating a film quite so soon but after Mark's brilliant post about Jake LaMotta pitting olives I felt the need to dedicate a poster to him. So this is for Mark. Now I'll admit that a number of the posters I'm choosing would not actually have worked at the time of the film's release as a piece of promotion. They work for those who have seen the film by paying reference to particular elements of the film in clever and entertaining ways. This is one such poster, alluding to the scene at the town hall where Quint is introduced by scratching his nails on the chalkboard. Just a very clever concept that blends the scratches and the iconic shark itself |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
lol! Crazy Kung Fu movie.

September 20th God bless the Japanese and their zany ways. When An American Werewolf in London was released in 1981, pretty much every country in the world promoted the horror element of the film. Not Japan though. No they apparently decided to sell it as some kind of bawdy sex comedy; a sort of 'Carry On Werewolf' if you will. But for the image of the guy covering his naked body with balloons you really would be questioning whether the artist had actually seen a single second of the film. And as I'm sure everyone can guess my favourite part of the poster is to be found in the bottom left hand corner as we see the werewolf apparently performing oral sex on the nurse. Once again allow me to say, god bless the Japanese! http://i.imgur.com/xFvZyEU.jpg An American Werewolf in London (1981, d. John Landis / Poster Origin - Japan) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
The Japanese can be weird. Especially the werewolf going down on the nurse

Please don't postpone posting posters, JayDee!
WE WANT MOAR!!!! |
September 21st I actually had another poster in mind for today but instead I've decided to stay in Japan for another example of their bewildering marketing. This time out it's the fifth entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Around the world it was sold along the same lines as the previous four films; as an out-and-out horror film with Robert Englund's visage pushed to the fore. Not Japan! They would apparently have audiences believe that the franchise had been relaunched as a goofy comedy that will be perfect for the entire family. Just look at how adorable those little Freddy Krueger's are! I want to keep one of them as a pet. The poster would also have you believe that Freddy vs Jason was not the first team-up film for Freddy. Apprently this film saw him appear alongside Dennis the Menace! Either that or it's Macaulay Culkin. http://i.imgur.com/nmKr6sw.jpg A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989, d. Stephen Hopkins / Poster Origin - Japan) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
That one literally made me laugh out loud.

Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
What the hell?
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
wait, hold the phone, nightmare ISN'T a family comedy?!?
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
That poster looks like an ad for a Freddy Halloween costume.
The Freddy franchise had more entertainment value than the other slasher franchises. I havent seen all of the Nightmares, but the ones I saw, they were fun enough. |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
The Japanese one is far scarier.
|
September 22nd Laurent Durieux again, with a poster for Die Hard this time which highlights the Christmas setting for the film in a fun, inventive way whilst featuring the iconic Nakatomi Plaza and also alluding to the part that broken glass plays in the film (McClane's poor feet!) Die Hard (1988, d. John McTiernan / Artist - Laurent Durieux) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee

Poster!!! Want poster!!! :) |
September 24th 10! That's how many posters I managed before I missed a day. So whoever had 10 days in the forum pool, congratulations. Anyway onto today's offering I love this poster, even if I have no clue what the f*ck is happening! Before stumbling upon the poster I had never heard of the film so had no idea what it was about. And still don't. Usually I'd have a look at the plot but I decided not to this time as surely no plot can live up to that poster. You've got a guy who is naked bar a space helmet and what appears to be a black leather thong. He's carrying a scantily clad, voluptious woman seemingly on the clouds over San Francisco (possibly) while other women fall through. Actually that might make for a fun spin-off game thread. Post a weird poster and people concoct a possible plot. The most creative and entertaining entry wins Girls, Girls, Girls (aka Extremes) (1985, d. Alan Vydra) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Oh come on now! You know you all like it! :yup:
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Those Japanese...
The dream child poster is "out there" as far as that term can go... |
I decided to actually try and find out the plot after all but it's been a bit of a labyrinth. Perhaps it should have dawned on me from the poster but it appears the film is a porno! Trying to get definitive details on it though is proving very difficult. Depending where you look it was either released in 1979, 1985 of 1986. Some places say it was also known as Extremes, however imdb has that as a separate film released in 1981!
And damn that Jaws poster on the previous page was popular, only just really noticed how much rep it had. Oh and thanks for all the encouragement and enthusiasm on the previous page by the way (MovieMeditiation, edarsenal etc); glad to see people are enjoying the thread.

September 25th As I think I mentioned back at the start I will be using themes to help me choose from the vast library of poster options I have. So I'll have periods dedicated to specific directors, actors, genres, countries etc. And today is the start of the first themed week. So did I go with a director or an actor? No I went with someone much more important; everyone's favourite bitch and the girl who makes my heart skip a beat. That's right, it's... http://www.picgifs.com/graphics/f/fi...rks-325975.gif Miss Vicky Week!!! http://www.picgifs.com/graphics/f/fi...rks-325975.gif And we start off with this beautiful piece of illustration for one of her favourite films of the last few years Her (2013, d. September 27th Now we come to the movie that put a real strain on the relationship between MV and myself; Mad Max: Fury Road. When I didn't share her great enthusiasm for the film she was not best pleased. It put a real wedge between us and our relationship hasn't really recovered. Perhaps it never will. :( :p There are tons of posters out there for Fury Road, and a lot of them are worthy of posting. This one stood out however, largely because it's rather different to most. The majority of posters for Fury Road are understandably quite grungy and chaotic. By comparison the design of this one is very clean and classy. For me it has a bit of a matinee adventure vibe, somewhat reminiscent of Drew Struzan's classic work on the Indiana Jones films Mad Max: Fury Road (2015, d. George Miller / Artist - Michal Lanczkowski) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
OH! Saving that one too. NICE J'! :yup:
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Meant to comment on the Fight Club poster earlier. It's kind of creepy, but also pretty cool.
As for the Fury Road poster: Great poster for a great movie. Too bad a certain Glaswegian doesn't agree. You need to give it a rewatch. Perhaps then you'll see the light. |
September 27th (Poster #2!!!) That's right ladies and gentlemen, today is a Double Poster Day!!! Truth be told it was not actually planned. I decided that today was going to be Fury Road day for Vicky so looked through my large library of saved posters and choose the poster on the previous page. After posting however I remembered another Fury Road poster that for some reason wasn't saved in the folder. Turns out I'd accidentally saved it in the wrong location. I could have left it to another day but I thought I'd just post it as a bonus poster, help heal that rift between MV and myself that formed over the film. Plus I had been one poster in the hole after missing out a few days ago As for this second Fury Road poster, it's quite something isn't it? Once in a while I'll stumble across an animated poster that someone has created but they're not very common. If those are pretty rare however then I think this has got to be a one-of-a-kind - an animated oil painting poster! The two artists actually created several individual paintings and then made the animation out of them. The end result is pretty incredible looking http://i.imgur.com/s68aFPG.gif Mad Max: Fury Road (2015, d. George Miller / Artists - Ronen V and Zachary Johnson) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
That's pretty awesome. You know what else is awesome? The movie. Watch it again.
|
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Im saving that one too
|
September 28th Talk about your marriages made in heaven, at least as far as MV is concerned. A poster for one of her favourite films in the world, featuring one of her favourite things in the world as part of its design. It's Martin Scorsese's tale of two rats, it's The Departed. |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
That's the best one yet!

September 30th It's the penultimate day of Miss Vicky Week. And usually I try to pick posters that I hope people will really like. I'll agonise over it. But today I just don't really care; I'm over it. If people don't like the poster, so what? It'll just be, like, their opinion man http://i.imgur.com/OvBqyQv.jpg The Big Lebowski (1998, d. Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee

October 1st Well it's the final day of Miss Vicky Week. And I think you'll all agree that I've certainly left the best to last. Now this is a piece of fine art. The likenesses, the texuring, the depth; it's truly astonishing. In all seriousness though I have a bit of a fondness for this poster and all of Ghana's movie poster art. I find the crude, naive work to be quite endearing. And it certainly gives them more personality than many a Hollywood studio, floating heads poster. Just in case you don't agree with me however here is something from the other end of the spectrum. If I remember the film correctly this poster is depicting Maximum picking up the dirt and running it through his hands just before the battle. I find it to be very moody and atmospheric, as well as just being a great bit of illustration |
October 1st (Bonus Poster) I am so angry with you Vicky! I can't believe you never told us that a biopic has been made about your life. And starring Joan Collins no less! How could you keep such a secret from me?! You're lucky I only just found out about this. Had I learned about it any earlier Miss Vicky Week would have been cancelled!!! :p To Miss Vicky, with love  http://i.imgur.com/bH6xkCa.jpg Joan Collins is Miss Vicky in... The Bitch (1979, d. Gerry O'Hara) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Definitely not crazy about that first Gladiator poster. The second is pretty great, though.
As for that other thing: WTF. |
In a surprise to no one, I have that film. In fact, I have them both. ;)
|
October 2nd While I enjoyed Miss Vicky Week it was all a bit mainstream and 'normal'. I think it's about time we returned to trashy and weird! And we begin with this rather lurid delight for an early 80s horror flick. The imagery is fantastic (particularly the mobile consisting of body parts) and I love the tagline at the top of the poster, especially because I can't read it without singing it like a nursery rhyme |
October 5th Two days without a poster and nobody even noticed?! Well that's nice! Nice to know I'm appreciated. :p Anyway I've had an idea for a new theme - 27 Days of Horror! Twenty-seven posters leading up to Halloween. And to help me choose the films I'm going to use the top 100 horror films list as compiled by this very forum. And yes it would make more sense if I did the whole month of October leading up to Halloween (so 31 Days of Horror) but I only just thouht about it! :D Now I don't know how exactly it's going to work out however; I've not looked ahead too far and there may not always be a good poster available. Today however I am able to deliver this astonishing piece of work by Jason Edmiston. If you're looking to convey a sense of sheer, unadulterated terror I don't think you could do much better than this. http://i.imgur.com/GRu67Us.jpg The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, d. Tobe Hooper / Artist - Jason Edmiston) |
October 6th The Top 100 Horror list dictates that today belongs to Ridley Scott's Alien. There are loads and loads of designs out there but as someone who is not overly familiar with the film I was struggling to choose which to go with. Then I saw this one and there was just something about it that caught my attention. It's a clean, simple, minimal design that I think just works terrifically well. I love the texturing of it. And the blood streaks are very cool, alluding to the three 'blood' types that feature in the film - human, alien and android. http://i.imgur.com/QACOnq1.jpg Alien (1979, d. Ridley Scott / Artist - Adam Rabalais) |
Re: Movie Poster a Day with JayDee
Oh! Android blood, thats what that was! Ok then ;)
