Memorable Facial Close Up Shots

I'm in the middle of assembling a video of close up shots in movies and, since I'm drawing blanks as to what else to include, I figured I'd ask you guys for suggestions. Here's a list of the films I already have:

The 400 Blows
Apocalypse Now
Battleship Potemkin
The Blair Witch Project
Brief Encounter
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
A Clockwork Orange
Come and See
Das Boot
Dead Man's Letters
Easy Rider
Full Metal Jacket
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Gummo
High Noon
Ivan, the Terrible, Part 1
Paris, Texas
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Persona
Requiem For a Dream
The Seventh Seal
Sunset Boulevard
Taxi Driver
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Third Man
Un Chien Andalou
Vampyr
The World of Apu

If you need more extreme closeups, there's Janet Leigh's eye in Psycho after the shower scene or Denueve's eye in Repulsion (opening credits)

I'd add Martyrs (2008). The most important shot of the film.

Since I haven't seen it yet, which shot are you referring to?

thracian dawg 07-30-22 12:39 PM

City Lights: the tramp holding onto a flower looking at the girl
The Shining: Here’s Jack!
Jaws: the first reveal of the shark and Brody’s reaction
Citizen Kane: Rosebud going into the fire
Casino: the poor slob’s head in a vise

I'm referring to a different close up, btw. It's the set of close ups during the Mexican standoff at the end.

A little off subject . . .

The movie is not one of my favorites but the music is superb! Especially the last two cuts:
The Ecstasy of Gold and The Trio (the scene you are referring to).

You'll know it when you see it. It would spoil it if I told you or posted a screencap of it.

There are hundreds. Westerns are particularly good at these shots like Leone's shots of the bad guys. Kurosawa's 'Stray Dog is the one that pops into my mind though:

No, I keep all the movie edits I make on my computer (I save them to Google Drive though) since I don't want to deal with copyright. Otherwise, I'd definitely post them online. For instance, I remember making a silent film stunt actor montage I really enjoyed that I would've liked to publish (sadly though, I lost the video years ago).

You're generally OK with montage clips / educational videos as long as there is no music in them.

Yeah Martyrs is disturbing but seminal for anybody who likes that kind of thing.

Well, it’s all relative/personal imo. Yes, there are far more disturbing and accomplished things, so what? It makes me think of what’s now referred to as “whataboutism”. I do actually like that sort of thing, for the most part, but there’s a balance to strike, as ever. Besides, I like the concept and have always been partial to other genre offerings that try to explore

afterlife
, eg The Veil, Flatliners, etc. So I judge Martyrs on a slightly different level (and I think it’s in many ways superior to those others). Certainly not in terms of whether or not it’s “disturbing”. To me it’s more philosophically horrifying.

Wow, you all just don't like actresses very much do you? Of all the face shots posted there's only been three female faces, sans the horror movie shots. Just an observation and one that I've made before here at MoFo. I do think that preference for male actors by both men and women is the reason actresses historically didn't get equally screen time compared to the men. There's some exceptions of course.

Out of curiosity, which close-ups of actresses would you recommend?

The one that first popped into mind was Ingrid Bergman from Casablanca (the end scene at the airport). Though Bette Davis had a number of memorable close-up face shots. Just a few:

Re: Memorable Facial Close Up Shots

Since Silence of the Lambs was mentioned, it is worth bringing up Philadelphia. Demme had a thing for filming facial close-ups/reactions, and the scene when Joe (Denzel) meets Andrew (Hanks), and the camera focuses on his face as he looks at everything that Andrew touches is brilliant.

Takoma11 07-31-22 02:03 AM

Orlando has some great ones, partly because the film frequently breaks the fourth wall. Mostly it's Tilda Swinton, but there's a romantic scene that consists of a lot of close ups of both characters.

This video includes some of them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZE7...eDarkProjector

This video is the final scene of the film, so sort of spoilers? (But it's not the kind of movie that really matters how it ends, if that makes sense). But it also has my favorite close-ups of Swinton at 0:32, at 0:57, and at 1:27.

Characters looking directly into the camera is a trademark of director Jonathan Demme. He uses it in most of his films, not just The Silence of the Lambs. Below are examples from Philadelphia, Married to the Mob, Something Wild, Melvin & Howard, Last Embrace, and Beloved...
