Who Likes Westerns?
I've been a massive fan of westerns for years; I like them almost as much as sci-fi films. I'm just wondering if anyone else shares my passion for this dying genre.
My Top 10 1. Once Upon a Time In The West 2. The Searchers 3. The Outlaw Josey Wales 4. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly 5. Unforgiven 6. True Grit (Original) 7. A Fistful of Dollars 8. Pale Rider 9. High Plains Drifter 10. Open Range |
I generally don't but I want to so I've been forcing myself to watch more. Started to find a few classics which have made me appreciate the genre more. My top 10 at the moment:
1. Johnny Guitar - Nicholas Ray 2. Django Unchained - Quentin Tarantino 3. The Ox-Bow Incident - William A Wellman 4. The Wild Bunch - Sam Peckinpah 5. The Gunfughter - Henry King 6. El Topo - Alejandro Jodorowsky 7. Rango - Gore Verbinski 8. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - John Huston 9. Meek's Cutoff - Kelly Reichardt 10. McCabe & Mrs Miller - Robert Altman |
Re: Who Likes Westerns?
I liked D'jango unchained, it did something really unique for the genre, I assume. Though, I really need to watch more westerns.
|
Re: Who Likes Westerns?
I like them quite a bit.
Unforgiven, Wyatt Earp, Young Guns, McCave & Mrs. Miller, True Grit (remake), Django Unchained, Appaloosa, and Open Range come to mind quick. Greatest Western of all time is Lonesome Dove. I know it's a mini-series but has to be mentioned. |

Re: Who Likes Westerns?
I like westerns, I grew up on them because my father loved John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. I can think of a few that are favorites of mine.
Dances With Wolves 3:10 to Yuma (I guess this was a remake?) A Fistful of Dollars True Grit (I like both, but prefer the Jeff Bridges one, it's closer to the novel) Tombstone (greatest western ever) Silverado Treasure of the Sierra Madre The Wild Bunch |

One of the first stories I ever wrote was an episode of The Virginian with Trampas as the main character (he was a supporting character on the show). On Sundays, my Dad (divorced) would pick me up and we'd go to the movies. We always saw whatever western was out and ALL John Wayne movies. I love westerns. :) I love Once Upon a Time in the West (even wrote a college paper), The Searchers, Red River, 3:10 to Yuma (the remake with Russell Crowe), Open Range, Unforgiven, Who Shot Liberty Valance?, The Magnificent Seven and probably some others. Dances With Wolves is my second favorite film of all time. Westerns are wonderful -- they explore the desire for civilization and companionship. I think they are lot like apocalyptic stories in that they study society. |

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 has a little homage to spaghetti westerns on a beach. Love it. The music by Ennio Morricone is a highlight of the spaghetti western. :)

I used to like some westerns when I was younger.. not so much as an adult.. but one I do enjoy is
A film I highly recommend. |
Re: Who Likes Westerns?

Anyone ever watched Heaven's Gate?
I've been curious about it since I've read it was such a box office bust, it created the modern trend of studios sticking to "safe" summer blockbusters instead of letting directors have free reign. |
Re: Who Likes Westerns?
Westerns are fantastic and have some of my favorite soundtracks from movies. Shout out to Ennio Morricone for some magnificent pieces.

Heaven's Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980)
http://thisdistractedglobe.com/wp-co...980-poster.jpg I was one of those people who actually saw Heaven's Gate in 1980 in its original version before UA pulled it, recut it and dumped it back on the market five months later. At 219 minutes, it certainly is a formidable film and one which you have to be prepared for. (Of course, any movie over three-and-a-half hours needs your dedication, especially at the theatre.) What got Heaven's Gate into trouble with most viewers (and critics) is that it started out with several long, mostly-impressive (in and of themselves) set pieces which didn't especially seem to connect to each other and further the plot. In other words, the most-difficult part of the film was the beginning. Of course, several foreign epics have been structured similarly and hailed as masterpieces, and although I won't namedrop them right now, most of them are Italian. Then, there is the other thing which caused Heaven's Gate to bomb, and that was that there was a backlash against Cimino for winning the Oscar Best Picture (The Deer Hunter) with what some wrong-headed people (including Jane Fonda) thought was a pro-war, right-wing flick. http://thisdistractedglobe.com/wp-co...rson-pic-1.jpg Now, I went back in 1981 and rewatched the film, cut by 70 minutes, and it's true that it was faster-paced and that it seemed action-packed (most all of the action was rear-loaded originally), but it also seemed choppy because the set pieces which used to be 20 minutes were now five minutes long. It also eviscerated much of the character motivations, the acting, the thematic complexity, and left you wondering who some people were. Today, I rewatched the restored version, and although it's still something of a tough row to hoe, it's certainly the way to watch the film. For one thing, Vilmos Zsigmond's sepia-toned cinematography is both spectacular in the context of the film and in the way we see history often through old sepia photos of the West. The film is about the Johnson County Wars of Wyoming in 1892, and the scenery is impressive and makes you feel as if you were close to Heaven's Gate, but in this version, there's just as much hellfire as anything. http://por-img.cimcontent.net/api/as...c4f7a6b299.jpg Heaven's Gate is a big flick, and it has a big cast. The central character is obviously the man played by Kris Kristofferson who sides with the European immigrant settlers against the Cattleman's Association and eventually the U.S. Army. He meets and falls in love with a wild Frenchwoman (Isabelle Huppert), but she also loves Christopher Walken who's actually on the wrong side of the situation. Sam Waterston plays a scumbag who's basically in charge of arranging the killing of the settlers, and John Hurt, who doesn't believe in what he stands for, is also on his side just because he's too ineffectual. The cast is full of many other names, including Jeff Bridges, Brad Dourif, Joseph Cotten, Mickey Rourke, Terry O'Quinn, Geoffrey Lewis, Richard Masur, Tom Noonan, and a few others. David Mansfield's elegaic musical score is a strong asset (he's the violinist in the movie every time you see one), and the sets and costumes are spectacular. Ultimately, Heaven's Gate comes across as some strange melding of 1900, McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Soldier Blue. Some people will hate it, others will love it, and many will scratch their heads. But if you get through it to the end, it's obvious that it's trying to be about something important, and in more than one way, it succeeds. |

The Wild Bunch is fun, even if just for the fact that I pretend Pike Bishop is Holden Pike from MoFo.

Re: Who Likes Westerns?
I'm a Western fan, I wouldn't say I'm a die hard one though. My favorites are definitely The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Both made in the same year and same genre but different in their own way.

Some of my favorites:

1.The Outlaw Josey Wales
2.The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 3.The Magnificent Seven 4.Once Upon a Time in the West 5.For a Few Dollars More 6.Silverado 7.El Dorado 8.True Grit (2010) 9.The Searchers 10.The Wild Bunch Like Sci-Fi Slob, I'm a huge Western fan. Here's a list of some the best Westerns I've seen, and if you've not seen any from this list and are interested, I'll say that they are all at least worth a watch, and some are great. Just up to you to pick and choose and see what you're interested in. www.imdb.com is a good place to see what the rating on these movies are. Still love Open Range; agree with seanc that Lonesome Dove is a great Western and I'll say that Duvall's performance as Gus is probably the best portrayal of a cowboy I've ever seen; The Quick and the Dead (1995); Rio Bravo; Unforgiven; The Unforgiven; Young Guns; The Long Riders; The Naked Spur; Winchester '73; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; Pale Rider; High Plains Drifter; Fort Apache; Ride the High Country; True Grit (original); The Shootist; Shenandoah; The Man From Laramie; Broken Arrow (1950); Tom Horn; Jeremiah Johnson; Shane; Tombstone; The Big Country; How the West Was Won; The Bravados; The Gunfighter; The Man From Snowy River; The War Wagon; Along the Great Divide; Big Jake. EDIT: totally forgot Stagecoach, another classic Western. Thanks to bluedeed for the reminder. Another John Wayne Western that I enjoy is Angel and the Badman, where the Duke is a somewhat reformed outlaw, stalked by bad guys and a lawman, and tempted by the love a Quaker woman, played by the beautiful Gail Russell. Here's a pic of her, just to tempt those of you who like pretty women in their Westerns: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/73...8e34df2f55.jpg |
Re: Who Likes Westerns?
What do people around here think of Ron Howard's The Missing?
|
Mandwa, I really liked The Missing. I haven't seen it in a while so I suppose that's why I didn't include it, but it's a very worthy Western. Plus, with Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones, you can't go wrong.
I feel guilty for leaving off Hombre (1967), one of my favorite movies, as well as Westerns, starring Paul Newman. It's more of a character study but there is action. The dialogue is great and Newman is playing another one of his 60's anti-heroes. I'd love to quote some of the dialogue but it would spoil some humorous moments. Oh well, it's highly recommended. EDIT: Another John Wayne Western that is enjoyable is Cahill U.S. Marshal. It's a mildly diverting movie, but with the addition of Neville Brand and George Kennedy, who are super in the movie, it is elevated above the norm. Brand in particular is great and gets lots of laughs as Wayne's ever-complaining sidekick. There are several other very good Wayne Westerns, but I'd fill the page if I kept on. |
