Re: Hello101's 200 Favorite Movies

You're already unhappy with your last list? It's only been what, three months or something? Not that I'm complaining. I enjoy these lists, especially ones that go beyond 50 or 100, since we tend to get a more interesting selection of films.

Out of those first three, I've only seen One Hour Photo. Very good movie. Very creepy. Possibly my favorite non-comedic Robin Williams performance.

The Good Girl doesn't really interest me, but The Believer looks good. I'll add it to my watch list.

Six months to be exact, Spaulding. :D

197. The Mummy (1999)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../The_mummy.jpg

The Mummy is a ridiculously fun action-adventurer. Not very serious in its approach and that's what makes It work. The brother Jonathon had me laughing at his foolery.

http://www.tribute.ca/tribute_object.../themummy3.jpg

196. Ever After (1998)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...fterposter.jpg

A very good update on an age-old tail, Drew Barrymore is typical but suited as the role calls for her melodramatic nature. Bit of modern and medieval elements thrown in and all in all, an excellent adaption.

I'm not much of a fan of Ever After, despite Drew, because I just don't like fairy tales. Not that that's stopped me watching it a couple of times. I've not seen The Mummy.

I really like One Hour Photo and The Mummy is a lot of fun, but I didn't really like The Good Girl. Still 2 out of 3

I like The Mummy and One Hour Photo, but just a little.

I'm interested in seeing The Believer and The Good Girl.

I have the DVD for Ever After because my wife loves it. I've never seen it.

195. Alien: Resurrection (1997)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ion_poster.jpg

Alien: Resurrection may be the weakest of the series (not counting the AVPS) but it's still a heap of fun, mainly thanks to Ron Perlman, Winona Ryder and mutant Sigourney Weaver. Special Effects are the tops.

http://www.avpgalaxy.net/wordpress/w.../review013.jpg

194. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

http://www.jackasscritics.com/images...ynamite_01.jpg

After a few watches, I've actually grown fond of the offbeat, nihilistic humor that I first despised in Napoleon Dynamite. These laughs are not ones that make you burst out loud, but those that make you snigger and get funnier the more you think about them.

Re: Hello101's 200 Favorite Movies

I saw The Mummy in theaters when I was a kid. I loved it back then. I haven't watched it in many years, but I'm sure I'd still enjoy it. Most modern blockbusters are missing that adventurous spirit that made The Mummy so much fun. Having recently watched the Boris Karloff original, I can say that Brendan Fraser's version blows it out of the sand.

Not seen Ever After. It doesn't look too appealing.

In preparation for Prometheus, which was one of my most anticipated movies in recent memory (and thus one of my biggest disappointments), I re-watched each film in the series during the days leading up to its theatrical release. I had never before watched Alien: Resurrection, so I was stunned by how downright awful it is. Even the terrible Alien vs. Predator movies are better than that garbage.

Napoleon Dynamite is hilarious. I don't hear much about it anymore, but I still have tons of quotes from it in my head that make me chuckle.

honeykid 04-05-15 09:29 AM

Re: Hello101's 200 Favorite Movies

Two poor films for me there. I only made it 45 minutes into Napolean Dynamite, but I was only watching it because a friend put it on. I'd have watched it all if she hadn't turned it off, but I doubt I'd have been any more invested or interested by the end of it than I was at the start or when we turned it off.

Winona Ryder and the look of the film is the only good thing about that Alien film. That said, it's still better than Aliens.

hello101 04-05-15 06:13 PM

193. MouseHunt (1997)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._hunt_ver4.jpg

A childhood favourite, MouseHunt is still the film to put on when you're bored. It doesn't require an ounce moment of thought, just sit back and enjoy its characters and laugh at its implausibility.

http://i.factmonster.com/images/cine/01270301.jpg

192. End of Days (1999)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._days_ver5.jpg

End Days is extremely dark unlike most Arnie-Actioners and the action itself is quite restrained but don't fear, the story will have you compelled as will the nerve-trickling score. Arnold is very good as Jericho but the real star of the show is Gabriel Byrne in his frightening portrayal of The Devil.

http://www.virginmedia.com/images/mo...s1-590x350.jpg

191. A Time To Kill (1996)

http://www.shadowandact.com/wp-conte..._to_kill07.jpg

Despite some stereotypes, A Time To Kill is worth it for Matthew's hearty performance, a moving story and to watch the only other Joel Schumacher you'll ever need to.

I reckon this trumps American History X because even though Gosling and Norton's performances are equally great. The Believer has more of a natural message and doesn't shove "the hate is bad" slogan down the viewer's throat. Also, the choice to dabble into the Jewish religion and its texts strengthen the film's basis and allows it to stands up against further rewatches. Powerful film with a striking ending.

 for A Time to Kill, but I think there's a lot more to like than just McConaughey's performance. I mean just look at that cast:

Matthew McConaughey
Samuel L. Jackson
Sandra Bulllock
Kevin Spacey
Kiefer Sutherland
Donald Sutherland
Oliver Platt
Ashley Judd

Quite a line up

hello101 04-06-15 02:31 PM

My net is currently too slow and won't load images but here are the next three.

190. Gangs of New York (2002)

189. Clockers (1995)

188. Bad Boys (1995)

+1 for Gangs of NY. I only watched it for the first time last week, and while it isn't one of Scorceses best I still thought it was pretty good. The only other ones I've seen of the last two sets are Mouse Hunt and Bad Boys and I disliked both.

cricket 04-07-15 10:56 PM

I love Bad Boys

187. Inherent Vice (2014)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ilm_poster.jpg

Inherent Vice is like a drug trip, you don't know what the f*ck's going on but just go along with it. Solacing is the pure fun and amusement which crosses out the stuff that don't make sense.

http://thefilmstage.com/wp-content/u...rent_vice.jpeg

186. Swimming Upstream (2003)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ilmPoster.jpeg

Swimming Upstream is a touching Australian drama, I haven't seen it in a good couple year but still remember scenes clearly and enough to recommend it to my fellow MoFos. Quite overlooked, even in the Australian scene.

http://guidatv.sky.it/app/guidatv/im...eri_visore.jpg

185. Hulk (2003)

http://estrenos10.com/img/portadas_o...-2003-2003.jpg

Ang Lee's psychological approach elevates what would've been a superficial action film into a thought-provoking and balanced superhero flick.

i hated The Hulk. Both Hulk movies pretty much sucked and it's the one Avengers character that I think Marvel got wrong. I love Thr Hulk in the actual Avengers movie, but The Hulk movies before hand had so much potential and they sucked.

hello101 04-09-15 02:35 PM

184. Matilda (1996)

http://www.kidsmomo.com/wordpress/wp...vie-poster.jpg

Childhood favourite which still connects to this day, great characters and wonderful, colourful direction.

http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/2/Ope...=allmovie_soap

183. Ransom (1996)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nsomPoster.jpg

Extremely tight and tense with a powerful performance from Mel Gibson. Much better than the remake, yeah it can happen.

http://www.mattfind.com/12345673215-...301_370797.jpg

182. Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas (1998)

https://www.movieposter.com/posters/...n/80/MPW-40399

In anyone else's hands, the style of the source material would've been misunderstood and a film unworthy to the exuberance of the novel released. Terry Gilliam was the best choice to direct FALILV, as his unique direction shares a lot with the novel. Johnny Depp was a great choice as well.

"Give me back my son!" (inside joke on Ransom) - I had a friend who said it was a great film, and I hadn't seen it yet, just remembered the trailer, and yelled it. The other friends around had a great laugh, and from then on, any time we saw Lance, I (or someone else) would yell, "Gimme back my son!"

Haven't seen Swimming Upstream, Matilda, or Inherent Vice, although I look forward to the latter.

Captain Spaulding 04-10-15 02:17 PM

Re: Hello101's 200 Favorite Movies

MouseHunt and Matilda are two movies I forgot even existed. You just brought back memories of my days in elementary school. Those are two movies that teachers threw in the VCR on a Friday afternoon if we had finished all our work.

I remember the soundtrack for End of Days better than I remember the film.

Not seen A Time to Kill or Inherent Vice and I've never even heard of Swimming Upstream.

Clockers is a good movie but too long. Bad Boys and Ransom are okay, but it's been a long time since I've watched either movie. I preferred Edward Norton's Hulk to Eric Bana's, but both were disappointing.

I want to read some of Hunter S. Thompson's work and return to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I think I watched it at too young an age to really appreciate it. Given my adulation for Johnny Depp and my interest in drug culture, it seems to have all the ingredients to become a favorite of mine.

Gangs of New York is the best movie to show up on the list so far.

181. Prometheus (2012)

https://lh5.ggpht.com/rzUwLHcomEVAK4...IruZ0hCGw=w300

Don't know how anyone could honestly dislike Prometheus yet adore 2001. Both have astonishing space imagery but one is entertaining, the other not. (cue stampede)

http://wp.patheos.com.s3.amazonaws.c...Fassbender.jpg

180. 127 Hours (2010)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...urs_Poster.jpg

James Franco proving he can be something other than Rogen's sidekick, an honest, visceral depiction of what can happen after a mere slip and fall in the canyons.

179. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...231cdf5d35.jpg

Even though it falls short of its tremendous praise, A Clockwork Orange is still made great by offering a unique take on dystopia and a stellar lead performance.

2001: A Space Odyssey may not be entertaining in the summer blockbuster sense, but it is awe-inspiring, thought-provoking, mesmerizing, mind-blowing, stupefying, astonishing, captivating, brilliant, momentous, transcendent and two thousand and one other adjectives. (And before honeykid or someone else makes a snide comment, "boring" is not of them.)

I wanted to love Prometheus, but it was a colossal disappointment. I agree with you about the great imagery. The movie looked amazing. I just wish they had put at least a small percentage of that energy into the script and the story.

I was impressed with Franco's performance in 127 Hours, but not the movie. What happened to that guy in real life is horrifying and the film makes you question what you would do in that same situation, but the subject was probably better suited for a short film than a full-length feature.

I like A Clockwork Orange, but not as much as I'm supposed to as a film buff and Kubrick fan. I watched it with friends, though, so there was a lot of talking and distractions during the movie, which probably hindered my enjoyment. One of these days I'm going to give it another shot. I keep telling myself that I'm going to read the book, too.

178. Cape Fear (1991)

https://40.media.tumblr.com/5e804bd5...no72o1_500.jpg

The original may be superior but that doesn't take away from the sinister fun of Scorsese's remake, if you can call it that. It strays so far from the slow burn of the original and seems almost self-aware of its excessiveness.

https://johnlinkmovies.files.wordpre...8/79826488.jpg

177. Milk (2008)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SC9HMdNAL.jpg

Like a funkier version of Brokeback Mountain with a splendid Penn performance which was much deserving of the Oscar despite popular opinion.

https://www.wodumedia.com/wp-content...-in-MILK-6.jpg

176. Mean Girls (2004)

https://playitagaindan.files.wordpre...vie-poster.jpg

Whenever Mean Girls is on TV, I just have to watch it, really entertaining stuff. As farfetched as it may sound, I get Goodfellas vibes from Mean Girls. Something about the way it's shot, the voiceovers and overall, how it aims for entertainment over technical achievement.

175. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

http://www.posterparty.com/images/an...r-PYR33150.jpg

I was in an up and down phase with Anchorman but I've finally settled on it being a fantastic comedy, and by far Apatow's best. I've yet to watch the second.

174. Con Air (1997)

http://theactionelite.com/site/wp-co...013/07/155.jpg

Nicholas Cage's accent would be a negative in any other film but it just adds to the ludicrous nature of Con Air and ultimately, adds to the fun. Its cult following is well deserved.

173. Chicken Run (2000)

I haven't seen the first two movies listed, but these three are great movies.

I'm not a big fan of Johnny Depp, but Edward Scissorhands is one of my favorites of his movies.

Twister is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. It's one of those movies that I just have to watch every time it's on TV.

Jamie Foxx gives the best performance of his career in Ray.

You're probably right. Mask has been on my watchlist for years, but It just seems to keep getting pushed down the list by other movies. I'll have to fix that.

She'll give it at least
. :)

From your last set I love Almost Famous, thought Ray was pretty good. Twister is just pure fun, and I really need to rewatch Edward Scissorhands.

What'd you give Mask mark? Assuming you've seen it.

What do you mean "assuming you've seen it"? It's mark. Of course he's seen it. It's 30 years old for crying out loud. :D The question should be, "in how many multiples of five have you seen it, mark?"

mark f 04-15-15 06:28 PM

I give it a 7.5/10 which translates to a
-. And two multiples of five. :)

... And how many times have you reviewed it here?

Hey guys, Mark gave it a high rating. It goes from a "looks interesting, will put on my watch list" to a "I MUST WATCH NOW!"

I've seen Mask, Twister, and at least some of Edward Scissorhands but I barley remember either of them it was so long ago. I remember not really liking Mask that much though.

I love Almost Famous, Twister, and especially Mask!

I thought Ray was good and I haven't seen Scissorshands yet.

A film which mark and myself agree on? Surely that's recommendation to everyone?

That's what suppose to happen but people tend to back away from films you like, honeykid. :)

Yes, which is why something which mark and I both agree on is so rare. It's also why everyone should watch Jaws. Even if they've seen it. Watch it again.

Almost Famous is like living vicariously through the character in the film, who's a young somewhat nerdy guy who hangs out with a rock band in the 70s and has quite the adventure! I thought it was way cool.

I thought I'd really like Almost Famous when it came out, but I've just never really gotten on with it.
