They have a spotlight game (or two?) a few days early now.

The Mets are such a dumpster fire that I have to wait a day or two longer than everyone else for Conforto to be officially placed on the DL, during which time those extra roster spots have already been used to snatch up some players I was considering. Thanks, Mets.

I've only been following baseball a few years, has a home run ever been hit off the first pitch of the season before?

You know, you'd think the rush of articles written about this already would say, but none do!

That said, I would guess not, since depending on how you decide to count, there's only around ~100 opportunities, and in many of those years home runs were much rarer.

Listening to the Cubs Marlins game now I think they just said that it has definitely happenned once before on opening day. But they're not sure whether that would have been THE opening pitch of that day. If that makes sense.

Oh, yeah, if more than one game started around the same time, so they'd need more granular research to confirm.

Verlander with a 7-pitch first inning. Nice start to the, uh, start.

Yeah, they debuted it during the end of last season, I think. Super weird that it happened mid-season, but I think with baseball and roto in particular there's just way fewer people checking in on that near the end of the year, so maybe they saw it as a good low-stakes test period.

There's some things about it that aren't very good or intuitive, but it's a net improvement.

One of the best things about opening day in roto is when one guy steals a base and a team jumps like 9 points.

Update: this wasn't in reference to anyone in particular when I posted it, but it just happened to me. :laugh:

Yeah, roto is absolutely brutal for people like us (I assume you'll agree with this, about yourself) with a penchant for over-analysis. Baseball's super random from game to game, too, so you can make the right move every time, but that might just mean the choice was correct 60% of the time, and over the course of the season it feels like a total crapshoot.

And it doesn't get better! Yay!

The yellow note said his velocity was down yellow note said that's concerning I guess, and for some dumb reason I went with it WHY LITTLE YELLOW NOTE WHYYYYY.

And with this fancy new stat tracker I get to feel crushing regret in real time and with more precision!

I might just drop him again. But it made sense to nab him right away and give myself a day to think about it, at least.

New rule: if your first-round pick goes hitless on opening day, you have to trade them for any of the pitchers they couldn't get a hit off of.

Either way, it's a good call to scoop him up. Never know if you hit lightning.

I obviously didn't have to pay a huge price in the draft for him, but I'm kinda banking on Tanaka's second half and strong peripherals from last year presaging a big 2018, and innings like this one sure make me feel better about that:

Oh man, Polanco murdered this ball.

Had to spend a 5th rounder on him last year and it didn't go well; didn't find out until a month into the season that he had a lingering shoulder issue. Got him in the 12th this year. Hopefully I was just a year early on the breakout.

Welp, Nelson Cruz might go on the DL, and Correa just came out of the game early. Just 2nd and 3rd round picks, no big.

Probably not too serious, in either case, but we'll see.

I ran yesterday (https://tinyurl.com/y73rjdxu lol) and I can confirm that it was terrible. I called my dad after and he said that both the men's and women's races were really good yesterday. The men's winner, Yuki Kawauchi, isn't even a pro-runner!

How are you feeling today?

Pretty okay. I may run a couple of miles later to assess the damage. I was really sad that the Red Sox were ppd, I feel like I missed out on the full Patriots' Day experience. Hopefully we get better weather next year.

I general, I'm getting sick of all of this rain; my H2H fantasy team is getting killed because of all of these rainouts. This is another plus of roto for sure.

I just walked back to work after lunch, and it's pretty bitter out. I need some warmth!

Corbin strikes out the side, but the third one is dropped, batter reaches, next guy goes to 0-2...home run. Booooo. From striking out three, to nearly striking out four, instead giving up a couple of runs.

I'm gonna say this is still a net positive.

Manaea's probably gonna haunt me. I was in on him big last year, and he was brilliant at times but inconsistent. Might be another one of the many guys I end up just being a year too early on.

When I picked Lester I thought I got a steal and when I picked Manaea I thought I'd regret it but I wanted more green & gold and I liked his stuff last year (though you're right, he was inconsistent). So honestly I was off, but now I look smart!

I still feel like each time he starts I'll find out it was just a hot streak, but man he's just pitching well every time.

NOW IF I COULD JUST GET A DECENT SET-UP RELIEVER. I'm terrible at picking up Holds.

It's like that old Mitch Hedberg joke about how when he makes a shot in pool he has to act like he's not surprised.

I really enjoy this game. Thumbs up to all you owners for being so engaged. I read a lot of stuff on players and I think its a testament to how strong this league is, that invariably I feel like its about 50/50 that a guy I'm reading about will even be on the wire when I go to look him up. I like knowing that about this league ahead of times when making roster decisions. Acuna? Pfft!!! Tim drafted him in the 15th round! HA! Gonna have to do better Yahoo :yup:

Yeah, same. I mean, in the moment it's sooooo frustrating sometimes, but in the long-run it's obviously way better.

This is how I feel. I just know that whenever I say to myself "Ok, I wonder if this guy has managed to slip by and stay unclaimed." The answer is pretty much always no!.

Last night, Sanchez was going up against the Red Sox in Toronto. Sanchez has been rough at home so far this season, and the Sox are arguably the best hitting team in the league right now. The clear choice was to sit Sanchez vs this monster line-up. There was really no other choice! Aha! This is baseball, and nothing ever makes sense, so I left him in. Ends up with the QS and 8 Ks will posting a .083 WHIP.

Because of course he does! ;)

mikey's team had 24.5 points in 2012, though we only had ten categories. But as a points-to-categories ratio you're still higher.

I dunno if he was mostly absent or not though.

My dudes keep getting hurt, and my SAVES guys keep tossing meatballs and blowing up their metrics. The silver lining is that they are managing to still get some saves. I just changed out my HOLDS guys yet again...Let's see if these guys will work out!
