Forest films

I'm slightly obsessed with forests. Love 'em. Think it stems from where I grew up. Can anybody recommend some films set in forests or with a large amount of time in a forest?

I've seen:

Deliverance
Come and See
The Village
Cabin in the Woods
The VVitch
Land
The Revenant
Return of the Jedi
Blair Witch
The Survivalist
Leave no Trace
Rambo
Predator
Border
Apocalypse Now and many other Vietnam war films
Aguierre

Thanks

P.S. If anybody recommends Forrest Gump they get a virtual slap.

I bet you might enjoy the doc Fantastic Fungi.

Also:

Predators*
Alone
Hunter Hunter
Backcountry
Body at Brighton Rock*
Here Alone*
Those Who Wish Me Dead*
Annihilation*
Antichrist*
Hunt for the Wilderpeople*
The Silencing
Pilgrimage*
Rust Creek
Kings of Summer*

* = movies I really enjoyed and would most recommend.

I liked Without Name a lot, but I can't always be trusted. Most of Letterboxd disagrees with me.

It reminded me of the Blackwood story The Willows, which is to say that it's a "horror" film in which not much actually happens. But it was effective at making the woods seem menacing.

Apocalypto?

Rockatansky 01-16-22 10:14 PM

There are probably a lot of first wave slashers that fit the bill (Friday the 13th, Don't Go in the Woods, Just Before Dawn, The Final Terror to name a few). And cannibal movies, although that's not a genre I have much fondness for (Cannibal Holocaust, Last Cannibal World, The Man From Deep River are probably the only worthwhile ones).

cricket 01-16-22 10:27 PM

Fitzcarraldo
The Emerald Forest
Mosquito Coast
Gorillas in the Mist
Blood Diamond
Last of the Mohicans
Sorcerer
Romancing the Stone
Captain Fantastic
A River Runs Through It
Southern Comfort

The Hunter. An Australian film set in Tasmania, with some nice scenes in the forest. Stars Willem Dafoe.

"Jeremiah Johnson"

First Cow?

ynwtf 01-17-22 03:15 AM

The Last King of Scotland.
(hey, it wasn't gump and mine has more layers)

Seriously though, there are some nice jungle scenes within The Fountain. At least a nice tree in Pan's Labyrinth. Both Seraphim Falls and Ravenous are peppered with wooded scenes, but I think the themes are more about the wilderness.

Ooh. That’s a virtual slap.

John-Connor 01-17-22 03:37 AM

Eden Lake
Prospect
Dog Soldiers
Apocalypto
The New World
The Jungle Book
Jungle Cruise

The Sea of Trees is the best in my opinion. Great views of the forest, good color work

Re: Forest films

The film Gaia from 2021 is all about a forest ranger getting lost in a weird forest.

John Dumbear 01-17-22 09:47 AM

"Fire in the Sky"

AgrippinaX 01-17-22 10:36 AM

I love forests too. Never thought about it in relation to film, but I think there is some good woodland in:
The Damned (1964)
The Beguiled (either, but especially 2017)
The Lobster
The Woods (2020 Polish show)

Not a film but a TV series that just wrapped up...

Now that tv series have been brought up, I'll add Green Frontier (Frontera Verde) to the list. Pretty good Netflix miniseries.

WHITBISSELL! 01-17-22 02:13 PM

Here's an interesting factoid.

When they were filming the camping scene from Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier they kept losing track of Dr. McCoy. The DP finally figured it out though.

They couldn't see DeForest for de trees.

Re: Forest films

The Alchemist (1983) and both first Evil Dead are pretty woody. The Guardian (1990) is a little bit forest-themed, but not that much. The New Daughter (2009) too, if I remember well.

Chypmunk 01-17-22 03:08 PM

Not a great fillum (imo) but Daeho [The Tiger: An Old Hunter's Tale] is a bit foresty.

I'll also take any suitable opportunity to pimp out the much better (imo) Choi-jong-byeong-gi hwal [War Of The Arrows] which has foresty bits :)

edit:
Might as well throw Tucker and Dale vs Evil out there as well.

edit II - the sequel:
Presume you'll have already seen UK 2006 double feature Severance and Wilderness but just in case you haven't.

Boo! Boo this man!

If jungle can count, then films like Uncle Boonme or Tropical Malady.

Re: Forest films

I was listing some films yesterday but managed to lose that post somehow. Hopefully, today is better. Also, some that I had written have already been mentioned, so I'll leave them out this time. Bolded name means it recommended.

The jungle
Eyes of Fire
Sator
Charisma
Cut-Throats Nine (I'd remember, assuming the wintry mountain woods is OK)
Antrum (again, not 100% sure if this fits but I'd remember so)
The Dead Lands (both the film and the series)
Lord of the Flies (I'm pretty sure it was a forested island)
Monos
Dora and the Lost City of Gold
The Nightingale
The Head Hunter
Hagazussa
The Axiom
Hold the Dark (almost sure of this)
Blastfighter

ScarletLion 01-17-22 08:04 PM

Re: Forest films

Wow, loads to delve into here, thanks everyone. Loved Monos and a few others.

Apocalypto is a big gap for me so I think that will be watched soon.

That looks great, thanks.

Torgo 01-18-22 02:53 PM

Crap, someone already made a Forest Whitaker joke.

Check out the low-budget horror movie The Monster (2016). It only has a 5.4 on IMDB, but I really liked it.

Nobody's made a joke about all the wood in Debbie Does Dallas yet if that's any consolation?

Interesting, I had no idea that was filmed in a forest. I should check it out.

It was the 70's. There were forests as far as the eye could see.

"One Last Shot" (2013) w/ Sam Rockwell is pretty woodsy.

dadgumblah 01-22-22 02:59 AM

The Hunted (2003) starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro. By the way, I love movies set in forests or jungles also.
