What time zone? We seem to have more members that are closer to EDT.

Typed in "movie forums" in Google, and here I am...

Yeah, that's why this site gets so many new memebers per day. It has probably the best name to google when somebody is looking for a movie forum to chat movies. The other would be "movieforum" without the 's'.

BobbyB 05-14-06 06:16 PM

I typed in "Movie + Forums" on Google, and voila!

Sure, but it varies from day to day. Over the weekend, for example, there were about 15 members on throughout most of the afternoon. On weekdays, I think the peak time would be a little later, but it's not perfectly consistent.

I'm an audience of one and Holden is always here... somewhere. Shhhh..... If you are very very quiet and really listen. I mean really listen, you are able to hear him rattling through the threads.

I guess my point was that out of 11,000 registered members, you only managed to keep a handful coming back. I'm used to message boards with 50+ on at all hours.

Perhaps you should expand and revise the Site a little; maybe lighten up the colour scheme? Just a thought.

Most times I come on here there are a few dozen members on and, like, a few *hundred* guests. Right now it says 10 members and 203 guests. I have a nice handful of forums I visit and read a lot on, but that I've never joined. I'm a "guest" at those places but a regular one.

Well, anyway, I found this site because my son made me come here. ("Mom, become a member of my site, please? Do you think Grandma will sign up too?") :) :)

This is a fairly small site, but it has the considerable advantage of being a little community. People here generally feel freer to share more personal things than people on bigger forums do, and it's resulted in some great connections between people.

That is how i find MoFo, I have been to many other forums but that community feeling wasn't there for me. :nope:

I don't know what kind of standard you're using, but I've been doing this (and variations on it) for a very long time, and the turnonver here is above-average at worst, especially for its subject matter. I also don't know what other forums you're referring to, but I guarantee they either a) have higher levels of traffic to begin with, and thus more activity in general, or b) routinely prune their membership rolls.

Also, you seem to be operating under the assumption that our goals have to do with raw numbers. Maybe that's the case for some sites, but not this one. Quality comes first here; always has. If that turns off the hoards of teenagers who worship at the Alter of Keanu and have nothing of substance to say, all the better. I'll trade quantity for quality any day of the week.

I'm sorry if this seems defensive, but you've been a member for a grand total of 11 days, and you're already trying to tell me how to run the place?

I've made expansions; news, DVD updates, et cetera. And you know what? The members appreciated them, but were relatively uninterested. They came here (and still do) for the intelligent discussions, not the rehashed movie news you can get on literally hundreds of other sites.

Coming in and sharing your thoughts and any constructive criticism you might have is always welcome. But complaining about activity levels in a thread on an entirely different topic and making broad, sweeping suggestions devoid of perspective to people who have been here for years is, in my opinion, rather rude.

quality over quantity! only the pick of the litter come back...

I wouldn't expect politeness from someone calling himself 'judas69'...

Yikes, don't kill the messenger!

I know it's tough to keep people, but if you're going to take everything I say so defensively (especially when I'm trying to help) then I'll guess there's no reason to hang around.

Have a good one.

The messenger is delivering a message from...himself. So yeah, that's who you kill in that scenario.

No, it's really not tough to keep people. Like I said, I don't grant your premise. And after, I dunno, roughly 8 years of community management at roughly every rung on the totem pole, I think I'm in a position to rebut those sorts of things.

There's a line between trying to help and being downright haughty. You were (and are) on the wrong side of that line. Toss in a bunch of bizarre criticisms that wouldn't add up to anyone with any real experience running an online community (and the fact that you're posting this in a thread on a completely different topic), and the response your comments got was inevitable.
