Haha, that would be risking your life indeed :D

Just had a play and daaaamn my Freeagle is proper lightyears away.

Mind you the red nebula is even further, but it's mighty tempting ;)

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I've got Gamma 1.0 downloading but might not even get on today. The F1 title decider is this afternoon and DA Inquisition is proving as much of a time sink as Elite. I didn't even want to be at the pub quiz last night. ;)

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I've been playing around a bit with Gamma 1.0 and ..... all my credits have disappeared. I'd spent some time trading, exploring, smoking the odd incompetent pirate and built up around 50k. Just docked at a station and I'm showing 0C. :(

Hopefully a reboot will solve it but I hope this isn't some sort of server glitch. Otherwise the game's going well - Still getting the odd crash but performance is excellent.

EDIT - Phew. A reboot fixed it.

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I'm getting 5 sec hangs every few minutes, so staying solo for now. Kinda stuck in the Cosi system, with no FSDs for sale, so just trying to get some loyalty going with the locals (think that improves items as well as jobs). If that doesn't work guess I'll just strip down to a fuel scoop and see how far I can run ;)

*EDIT*

Actually, biting the bullet and buying the Brick-Hauler just for the extra jump range. Means I can get to the only tech system in the vicinity (and hopefully pimp it out there).

Quite enjoying getting the hang of the map's geekopoly of options now :D. Switching to faction view, panning out, and running the resulting 'spotlight' sphere over the populated world is cool :). Reckon once I've picked up my freebie I'm gonna head 'south' to the Empire layer there (I hear they have good tech), and then to a border region with the Feds to see what's kicking off ;) (Can't really see where the Alliance are, but I don't really understand the lore. Maybe they're off eating themselves on a mountain somewhere ;))

Seems like being marooned like this has been a good learning curve :)

Tacitus 11-24-14 05:07 AM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

My Freagle was very close to where the game started me. I picked it up and immediately junked the scanner for more cargo space.

One or two annoying glitches remain, like doing a mission only to find your docking request denied in order to finish it off. The only way I can resolve it other than storming the station (not really worth it for 1000 creds) is to cancel it, pay the fine and sell the now stolen goods at an Anarchy station.

This is the Elite I remember now - A real slow burn at the beginning.

Golgot 11-24-14 08:07 AM

If you're online the docking reject is normally coz the station is full. You can slip into solo to park - or just harangue everyone on comms ;)

Yep, does burn some at the mo ;) Finding the grind kinda awesome in terms of scale n small victories at the mo tho :) Just wouldn't wanna start over too many times!

Tacitus 11-24-14 09:17 AM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Yeah, that suddenly struck me when I was playing this morning - It only happens at small stations and, after watching a ship leave, they would grant my docking request. Doh! :D

I'm now on friendly terms with the Cosi Revolutionary Party, delivering little red books etc, and it's fascinating to see how my sphere of toleration is growing. I'm probably going to go down your route and buy a Hauler, now that I can afford one without trading in, and maximise some trading before getting that Cobra Mk III. ;)

Couldn't resist buying a new paint job for my Freagle:

I'm usually immune to microtransactions. :(

EDIT - Oh yeah, the Première. ;)

Poor old Ian Bell. He's become the victim of some history re-writing now that Dangerous is almost live. Davey B is now "The man who started it all"

I wondered what Jessica Chobot was up to these days. Corporate freelancing, it seems...

Oo, you started near Cosi too? I have learned one highly important thing from this stretch of space. Don't go to Dewikum. (Which should count as an inappropriate name surely? :D). The sole station is 230k fricking LS away. Think it took 20mins to complete that mission :|

PS Have found a really nice shortcut for the stellar drive stuff. Wait until the ETA (I think that's what is...) reads 0:06 and whack your speed down to the middle of blue zone. You'll maintain that speed ratio (?) and rocket it in quite nicely. Just have to add a bit more kick if they targets very near a grav source.

I'm actually kinda happy with my little Fiesta, even if it does sound like Arnie passing a tin can. Replaced a few bits with more cargo and I can do 11LY unladen. Up to 100k+ fairly easily tho, so wouldn't say no to an upgrade soon ish...

http://i58.tinypic.com/16kdqw6.jpg

Maybe a Cobra if I'm lucky ;)

What changes have you noticed after communing with commies then? I've got one small mining colony all friended up, but haven't really noticed much beyond a greater spread of jobs, and maybe slightly lower prices. (They also seem to be annoyed with me now too [down red arrow], which I guess is because I'm giving some food to their starving unions?). Swaying a tech Coriolis seems to take a lot longer...

Tacitus 11-24-14 01:46 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Yep, the blue line thing while cruising was one of the first tips I gleaned - It moderates your speed. Not perfect in the you'll occasionally overshoot but a nice cruise control feature. ;)

One thing I've noticed from my Commie sympathising is that one of the other factions on Cosi has taken a dislike to me after I did a 'spread the word' mission (which I only use as fillers on trade runs because they take no hold space). I'm still neutral with the Federation but have a little blue arrow beside it so I'd call it Neutral+. ;)

Golgot 11-24-14 02:06 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Ahh that makes sense. Little mini feuds and such. Interesting that they can potentially exist within bases too. IE It seems I could overthrow the current 'conservatives' running the tech base by supporting the rebels & sneaking in arms. Tempting ;) (Would be nice if there were more repercussions than just roleplay etc - but I'll take roleplay until the main story & story 'injections' kick off).

*EDIT* On the blue mid-point, yeah it seems to be the ideal approach speed. 0:06 just seems to be the optimal point at which to adjust down to it. Or at least some fella reco'd it on the net and it's been working out nicely so far :)

Golgot 11-25-14 01:38 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Think I'm going to put operation 'The Freagle has Landed' to one side and try and aid a rebellion, just to see if I can change the allegiance of a system. (There's a lot of bitching on Reddit about inability to affect the world). It will involve sneaking guns in while frosty. And probably a fair amount of death ;)

Incidentally have you played with the population slider on the map? For some reason if you move the 'Max' slider down it doesn't discount the larger populations, just exaggerates the size of the system. Pretty handy for scouting out big fat rich locations from a distance :)

(Also helped me overcome my colour-blindness and I can now actually see the orange Alliance zones ;))

Tacitus 11-25-14 01:56 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I see enough orange zones on maps over here. :p

I've not touched the population slider. Was planning on putting some time in last night but the servers were down ... Reddit probably exploded with self-righteousness. ;)

Golgot 11-27-14 12:10 PM

I was trying to use Gamma wisely, by conducting an experiment: Flipping an entire system to a different faction :). Found one with a single base, and lots of independents who could undermine the incumbent Feds. Unfortunately the main rebels always seem to be of the same faction, so I just traded the hell out of the underdogs... and.... nuthing. Unless it takes the background sim more than 24hrs to catch up, my influence was too puny - they're still at 55% influence on the system map. I'm guessing I'd have to start taking down their trade/mili ships & funding an active rebellion to make a dent :|

---

Instead I've been getting my geek on, and genuinely enjoying using the map options & new trading info to plot my routes. It makes trading borderline fun ;) To the extent that I've now got a 40t-capacity one of these...

http://i62.tinypic.com/nnllhl.jpg

With bonus free paintjob thanks to an apparent glitch on the Frontier site :)

It's so much more enjoyable to have a ship that can shift again, and with a decent power set-up off the bat. The boost recharges in no time and it looks like it'll take a fair few weapons before baulking. Liking the deep bass growl when cruising in to park too.

I was intending to get back into combat, but that tonnage is just too tempting. Think I'm just gonna see if I can get some of the big 25t+ jobs rolling, and work a wee 1K-profit-per-ton route I think I've found. Then kit the beasty out and see what trouble I can cause in an asteroid field :)

(God I hope they leave us something post-wipe. Maybe just the base ship at least :))

Tacitus 11-27-14 01:37 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Lucky sod, I'm still 100k away from a Cobra. :p

I think the free paint jobs are a Black Friday special. On Thurday. Bloody Americans. ;D

I've snagged them, thanks, although am a bit annoyed with the whole paint job thing. Sure, have the fancy multicoloured ones as DLC but why not allow you to paint your ships solid colours in the outfitting bay with in-game credits? It's what 99% of car racing games do.

No Irish flag in their Viper DLC either...

Golgot 11-27-14 04:29 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Yeah would be good, although it's not like you see the exterior that often. I think I'll be a bit more miffed if/when spacewalks come about.

I found stripping the Hauler of everything, including shields, made things quicker (and a bit more hair-raising ;)). Think I had a 20T limit (& 11ly range unloaded), which clocks up 100k pretty quick on a 1t/1k route.

Tried mining too, and I could see it being worthwhile once they get some form of ore-detection implemented. Need that in an early update really, coz right now it's a crap-shoot to actually find a node. (Would be nice to see the 'lichen' that you can trade which is supposed to colour the various ores). Very atmospheric though - and the mini-game of trying to match the asteroid's orientation so the ore flies off in a similar path could be absorbing (if you knew you knew there was a pot of gold at the end ;))

*EDIT* Still yet to try evading station defences to sneak some illegal goods in. Found some 'trade data' floating near a wreck which was tempting, but wasn't sure if it was worth risking my new ride over. It's a bit wide for posting!

Tacitus 11-28-14 04:23 AM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I've removed shields and scanner and replaced them with hold space (takes it up to 12T) but am a sitting duck during interdictions unless whoever's the pirate is a total eejit, like one guy in a Viper.... Which led to a really frustrating bug.

I'd reduced the guy's custom painted Viper to 15% Hull with my single pulse laser when the fuzz showed up. Usually they mop up the bad guy and go about their business but this time they turned on me! The pirate was wanted and started the fight so I wasn't in the wrong. ;)

I booked it out of there as fast as my frame shift could carry me then noticed I was wanted by basically everyone. Got close to a station and they took me down. I restarted and it happened again. And again.

Finally I rebooted the game and my wanted level was gone. And 100K credits. :(

I guess we're still testing the game, not playing it. ;)

Golgot 11-28-14 02:12 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Oh Jesus. Yeah, they've gotta a lootttt of scrubbing to do :|

There's def something really odd going on with fines. I keep getting random 400 ones - and at one point had a massive one with the Feds, which then disappeared when I logged in-and-out.

I know there are confusing issues where taking on a bounty in one location can still lead to security forces taking you on (I think if the bounty is with one system-faction but the security is from another). They say that stuff's all intentional though.

Finally got me Freagle. 140 light years later... includes Khhhhhaaaaan ;)

Tacitus 11-28-14 02:34 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

I'm finding performance has gotten worse with each Gamma revision. Hopefully it'll come together but if I'm interdicted near a planet then the frame hitching is so bad that there's no chance of evading it.

My Freagle was in my starting station. I figured that's where they all were.

Golgot 11-28-14 03:44 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Yep there was an initial f-up where they were spawned miles away - they did a server-side quick fix, but you needed to restart to get the benefit, and I'd made some cash already.

Made for a nice bit of 'make your own fun', so I'm cool with that. Bit confused by discovery data tho - I scanned like 20 suns on the trip over, but it only showed 3 items when I came to sell (3 systems that I'd scanned more thoroughly previously) - and it wasn't offering any more than the areas near those sites. I thought the further away you were the more it was worth? Could be because they were all pretty populated systems maybe.

Hmm, performance actually seems better for me. The 5 second lags are gone completely. I wonder if it's all this telemetry gubbins they're piling on with each update that's making it get worse again? They seem to be really hunting for the cause of some bug or other.

Tacitus 11-28-14 04:50 PM

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Tonight's update seems to have fixed my performance issues. It shows what a fine balancing act PC optimisation is, if that was the cause.

If I'd not mysteriously lost my 100K yesterday I'd have my Cobra now. On with the grind. ;)
