Coincidentally the only Ramsay brothers' movie I've seen to date (and it was years ago). IIRC, my biggest issue was that the Nancy character was basically regulated to inconsequential, side-lined character at the end.

Huh? How's The Dead Pit an Elm Street rip-off? It's been a few years since I last watched it, but my recollection is more like a Fulci rip-off with a pinch of Hellbound. It's a decent film, though.

Right, you made that clear, I just didn't word my post properly. What I meant to say was that I was surprised/relieved to hear that you weren't always a fan prior to this viewing. I thought this was one that all of you encouraged me to watch, so I felt like a failure for not connecting with it.

The amount of support for Prom Night II pleases me.

I'm fairly sure I re-read my review of it in the last few months and found that I said something like, "If you want the best Elm Street-type film with a Fulci third act ever made, you at least have to consider The Dead Pit." Or words to that effect.

"WHAT WERE THEY WAITING FOR? HUH?! WHAT WERE THEY WAITING FOR?!"

Watched Abigail last night, found it fitfully entertaining. Despite how much of it's twist was basically out there already in the marketing I'm still going to discuss it with spoilers as the film itself clearly intends it to be a surprise.So from the start one of my gripes is that I think the whole thing would have played better if I didn't know that twist ahead of time but unfortunately the very first trailer I watched spoiled it.



So I'm pretty split on this, set up is fine and I like the interactions of the characters and Abigail for most of the film. There is some fun to be had when things go sideways but it also feels a bit too silly at times for me. I'd say check it out if you've been thinking of doing so and if you haven't seen any spoilers avoid them like the plague.

I came across this book I plan on ordering called Perverse Titillation: The Exploitation Cinema of Italy, Spain and France, 1960-1980.
Kind of wish it went up to the 90’s, since there’s an awful lot of Italian horror they’re leaving out, but it sounds interesting nonetheless.

The Church, 1989 (B)


A very messy, convoluted and disjointed film, peppered with some of the best imagery in any Italian horror movie I've seen. A whole 10-15 minutes feel cut off unfortunately. Characters just vanish from the last part of the plot with zero explanations.

Yeah, a lotta people seem to like The Church the most of Soavi's films, and I think I liked it more than it sounds like you did, but I preferred Stage Fright. And some small part of that at least was that it made sense and characters didn't just disappear. But I am used to that from the Italians so I just took it.

Anyone watch the show Evil? Is it good? Is it worth a watch?

Stage Fright was super fun! I loved how campy it was with the theater setup and all. B+ at least.

The Woods, 2006 (B-)

A lady who set fire to a forest gets sent to a weird boarding school. It's obviously about witches.

I imagine this one is a lot better if you're into Evil Dead, which I have yet to see, but there's a ton of references according to Imdb, including one that I spotted, plus the main actor being here. Still, an alright movie that opens with some great moody vibes.

Life of Belle (C+)

A sort of Paranormal Activity type setup but here it's the mom that's crazy and weird with the kids. Just did not vibe with it much myself, but I'll admit there's something there.

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times -

While I had a pretty good time with this movie, if I had to sum up my reaction in a few words, it would be "giallo by numbers" (no pun intended). I can't say anything bad about the mystery since the end result surprised me in a good way. I also approve that the possible motives delve into folklore and the supernatural, i.e. the titular legend, and the real in the plotlines involving an inheritance and a company takeover. As for the bits that get the adrenalin flowing, I'll credit the killer for having more than a knife at their disposal. Also, from its fashion industry backdrop to the cars, the particular style of movies like this that make a beeline for your brain's pleasure center from the beautiful colors to the even more beautiful people are intact. On that note, there are some memorably artistic shots, especially one featuring our killer running through a glass office building that could make Dario Argento say, "I wish I shot that."

Despite what I like about it, there's still too much cake and not enough icing. If my lack of compliments about the characters (beyond how they look) are of any indication, it’s because it favors plot over their development, so much so that there are exchanges that would not be out of place in the typical CBS procedural. The whole thing gives the impression that the filmmakers binged movies in this genre, mapped out all its common tropes and then formulated a screenplay, in other words. It’s a tried-and-true formula, though, so if you are in a giallo mood, you will most likely enjoy it. It’s just too bad that it does not do enough to think outside of it.

Late Night with the Devil, starring Polka-Dot Man. I was gonna save this for October but with so much buzz around it I was worried about being spoiled, since I knew so little otherwise. This was a lot of fun. Some shoddy CGI and not fully committing to the format wasn’t enough to ruin the experience for me. It’s a spooky good time.

Just wrote a little about this in “What are you watching tonight?” thread, but I’m planning on seeing In A Violent Nature, which is a Canadian slasher film described as an “ambient slasher”, and compares to slow cinema.
It’s unique where it’s told from the pov of the slasher

Intriguing premise. I wonder how the execution will end up going. I'll probably imagine and wish for a version directed by John Schlesinger akin to Midnight Cowboy and Marathon Man in terms of mental association flashbacks. Though I feel like movies that try to do that these days, feel the need to do full on flashbacks and lack the deftness of flashes of memory association.

If I can recommend a movie for people NOT to watch....Killer Book Club on Netflix. It's a Scream clone were the killer is in a clown masks and he records his killings instead of calling you. Boring as hell.
