I'll have to watch this film again, but I never got the impression that the machine did not work or that everything that Nolan was showing us was simply to fool us into thinking it did.

I'm reading that the last shot of the film is of Root and not a double....it'll be interesting to revisit for sure.


On the flip side - this film is based on a book and in the book, the machine works.
