Re: MISCELLANEOUS
In retrospect, I think I'm glad I didn't grow up with MTV.
(My family didn't have cable and I never had it until I was in my late 20's, living on my own). The reason is that I formed my own images of songs in my head, and it was those self-made images & associations that made certain songs special to me. Now, with YouTube, I can look up a song I like and see the video that was made for it... and I tell you, I'm often disappointed to see how some songs were interpreted visually. So many videos have little to nothing to do with the song or were just someone's attempt to add something flashy and visual to a tune. And so many are nothing like the images the songs evoked in my own head. If I'd seen some of the videos when I first heard the music, I more than likely would have grown up feeling completely different about those songs - and more times than not, would have had a negative association with many songs I grew up loving based solely on the melodies and lyrics. Just thought I'd share that! ;) |

Wasn't sure where to post this... but I was looking at YouTube and in a list of videos on the side I saw one announcing the death of Bill Murray "16 minutes ago".
I nearly freaked, but then clicked on the video (from May) and found someone had reported his death, but it was of a different person named Bill Murray that had died. Bill Murray, the actor & comedian is still alive & well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=greYn-NOkS8 |

Why? Not for the first madman/dictator the royals have met, entertained. Obviously that pic was taken long ago (I don't know when) but he's rarely not been 'problematic'.

Re: MISCELLANEOUS
I had a major Mandela-movie-effect.
Was watching Alien (1979) again because it was on TCM-OnDemand. I've seen it several times, but not recently. I kept thinking there was a scene where Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) was found, still barely alive, strung up in a kind of nest the alien had made aboard the Nostromo. I thought I remembered Dallas speaking to the crew (or at least Ripley) - perhaps asking them to put him out of his misery or blow up the ship. Now, I know there are scenes like this in Aliens (1986) where people are strung up on the base in alien nests, still alive, but being used as hosts for new aliens. And I realize Dallas would not have been a host because (as far as I know) only a face-hugger alien can "impregnate" a human with a new xenomorph. What lends to my apparently false memory is that, in Alien, we kind of see the demise of the other crew members at the hands of the xenomorph, but with Dallas, he's in the ducts, there's a jump scare with the first full shot of the alien's head, then we never see Dallas again - his death is not depicted in any way (thus I was waiting for him to show up in a scene that did not occur). Any clues on why I'm remembering this? Deleted scene maybe? Or am I just misconstruing scenes from other sequels from the Alien franchise? |

Re: MISCELLANEOUS
Good news - my memory isn't as bad as I thought it was.
My memory of Alien was not a Mandela effect. I looked it up, and in a Director's cut of the movie there was a scene (deleted from the original) where Dallas and Brett (Harry Dean Stanton) as well are found, still barely alive and cocooned into the alien's nest. Apparently, the men are being held because the xenomorph can lay eggs (I thought only the "Queen" laid eggs?) that could impregnate the men - according to one explanation. I must have seen the Director's cut at some point. The scene does give closure to Dallas's fate, and he does ask Ripley to kill him, which she does. It can be found on YouTube, but is an extremely disturbing scene. |
Re: MISCELLANEOUS
The New York Times tech team offered this very good tip last week.
If there’s something you want to buy online leave it in your cart for a couple of days. Even better, pull it out of your cart & put it back in a couple of times. Most very likely you will get an email from the seller offering a discount. Can’t remember if this only applies to first-time customers, but I think it must do. Anyway, I tried it buying a dress from a site I’d never bought from before. Eventually ended up with a discount of $49 when they saw me dithering about the purchase. Good tip IMO. |
Re: MISCELLANEOUS
Got a FedEx delivery this morning. Had to be thrown over the fence (as per usual) as front gate is locked. What surprised me today is that the driver was female, which is my first time seeing a female humping all those heavy boxes around. I could barely lift my box off the ground. Got chatting & she told me she’s been doing this for 30 years. Strong woman. Respect.

I’ve had so much “designer coffee” this week, but the best coffee I’ve had was from DNKN. These places with their fancy coffee are so expensive & over-hyped. Had a latte today, not hot enough. Had Americano coffee yesterday, nice & hot, but too strong. And both of these places asked for an electronic tip before I’d even had a taste of the coffee. I declined to tip since I didn’t know what I was tipping for.

Strange interesting fact: we know how Taylor Swift’s new album has clobbered the charts this week, but did you know that 10,000 units were sold as cassettes? Seems that some folks still like a cassette player.
Turns out that many of her fans like something to hold onto as it were. Streaming accounts for most of her sales, but her fans also love CDs & vinyl. |

I'm not a Taylor Swift fan, but I still buy my music on CDs and my movies on DVDs. I prefer having a physical copy over streaming. But I usually buy them at garage sales and flea markets because they're much cheaper than in the stores. (I bought almost 100 DVDs at a garage sale this past weekend for only $85, and most of them were Blu-Rays. :)) |

I saw something on tv a few months ago about how, not only were records sales continuing to rise, but that Cassettes were now also starting to sell again.

The reasoning from Swift’s fans, apparently, is that they want something tangible to represent her. I can relate. |

That sound a lot like my DVD collection. They're all over the house, and most of them aren't in any order. I take pictures of all of my DVD shelves, and when I want to find one, I look through the pictures until I find it. I just found a DVD cataloging app that looks like it might help. I can scan the barcodes, and it fills in most of the information. It doesn't get everything, but what it does get definitely helps. Plus it has options for all sorts of stuff, including what shelf the discs are on, if I loaned the discs out to anyone, and more. It's VERY SLOW, but it's a free app, as long as I keep the data on my phone, but there's a paid option to save all the info to the cloud. I've only been using it for a few days, but I've already scanned in almost 300 DVDs. It's called DVD Library. |

Apart from Industry, I'm not sure I'd bother with the rest if I were you @Stirchley. :D
I have Irma Vep recorded and have watched the first episode. I didn't dislike it but it wasn't something which had me really eager to see the next episode. I'm still not sure how I feel about The White Lotus. I didn't think the first season was much cop, but as it's different (but the same) I'm undecided as to whether to bother with it or not. I just didn't 'get' The Rehearsal, Not only did I not get the humour, I wasn't sure where it was supposed to be. |

So weird today. Husband wanted a warmer blanket so I was digging around in the storage bags under our spare bedroom bed. Came across a large black storage bag that had a summer quilt inside it. A large reversible quilt.
What’s weird is that I have never in my life seen this quilt before. Unless I had it during my 10 years in Manhattan & have forgotten it, but I don’t think so since I still have & still use another quilt from that time. I rarely forget stupid stuff like this & I have somewhat of a photographic memory. Anyway, will drag it out again & use it next summer. Wherever it’s from, I like it. :) |

Changes in atmospheric pressure and/or temperature make my migraines worse (and are among the factors that trigger them). This weekend it suddenly got warmer in London, not by a lot, mind you, but I think that’s what it was. If only we all had the presence of mind to follow it through. I worked all night yesterday, not because I had to, but because when the migraine finally ended I couldn’t sleep, so I worried about everything humanly possible for the month ahead, work-related and not. How are you feeling, do you have any symptoms? It’s absurd that this thing just strikes and strikes again. I remember when the pandemic had only just started it struck me that if I hadn’t had my surgery I’d very likely be dead from this virus, literally among the first European victims, likely, as I had all the risk factors in terms of serious breathing issues. Chilled me to the bone, that. I will try again RE: one day at a time, I just need to apply myself. |

I've read that stress can make migraines worse, so if you have a competitive job, that might be affecting your migraines. Also, bright lights and loud noises can also cause migraines, so if you can find a way to relax in a dimly lit, quiet room, that might help too. I'm sorry you're going through that, and I hope you feel better soon. |

I think tipping is getting out of control. There have been a lot of stories recently about delivery people screwing with peoples food orders because they don't think they're getting a big enough tip. Tipping should be optional, and only for a job well done, not a requirement regardless of how poor the service might be. |

Is this the second time you have Covid, or is it still the first time and your negative test was wrong? Are you still having any symptoms, or did you just test positive again?
Husband has never been tested and, knowing him, he may not be telling his doctors (he has several) that he has been exposed to someone with Covid (me). For all I know, he could have Covid & gave it to me. I’ve moved on to other worries now. Seems like everyone & his brother where I live has had Covid. FYI, here is the Covid thread I started. https://www.movieforums.com/communit...78#post2360578

I think tipping is getting out of control. There have been a lot of stories recently about delivery people screwing with peoples food orders because they don't think they're getting a big enough tip.

I’ve moved on to other worries now. Seems like everyone & his brother where I live has had Covid. I’ve arrived at a point where I’m watching something (usually TV shows) before as well as after work now, meaning around 6 am. Doesn’t sound very healthy, but I feel like it sets me up for the day with positive vibes. |

Subway just introduced tipping. Optional. I usually ignore it.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. I do think everyone has it and is just past caring. My entire office sneezes and coughs, but no one tests or mentions Covid.

Doesn’t sound very healthy, but I feel like it sets me up for the day with positive vibes. I couldn’t watch tv or a movie at 6 a.m. I get up around 5:30 a.m. & it’s the only time I can be alone for a couple of hours & I prize the time. I turn on a Philadelphia classical music radio station on my iPad in my office & only I can hear it downstairs. |
Re: MISCELLANEOUS
Leaving the USA to Europe is the most difficult challenge of my life and the most important decision of my life. I couldn't have made a better choice and I wonder how much more my life would be had I left the US ten or twenty years ago. All that good stuff I missed out on here is available in abundance over there. Simply sayin.

I live in New Jersey.

They thought confidently to themselves, "It's always gonna be like this." With a smug smile they continued on satisfied with their monopoly. Then one day I got away. Needless to say, it isn't like that anymore and I'm a free man.

I’m confused. Nobody has seen or wants to comment on The Last of Us?

It’s official! We have survived January & February & in 20 days’ time it will be Spring!
These 2 months weren’t too horrible in Connecticut. We had barely any snow & what we didn’t have hit us on Monday overnight & it was a LOT. All melting today. Even the ice will have gone by tomorrow. :) |
Re: MISCELLANEOUS
Somehow February felt even longer than January. Pleased it's over, though we're supposed to be getting some really cold weather next week.

Why do people always lose one glove or mitten on the sidewalk? If they lost both gloves or mittens someone else could use them. :)

I think the reason is you only need one hand to get something out of your pocket... so you take one glove off and stuff it in another pocket (from where it falls out) while you complete your ungloved task... only to later find that the glove you removed is now gone.

I've always been more bothered by the lone shoe on the motorway/highway meridian. Almost always seem to be men's shoes, too. Although if it's a trainer it could be a womans, but I'd still bet male.

First daffodils in bloom today. Just a few, but such a welcome sight.

We've had daffs for weeks here. Not that the planet's warming or anything....

Had to laugh yesterday. Reading the real estate section of the NYTimes. I guess nobody noticed the phallic artwork on the walls of this apartment.

I think I’ve created a monster. My Looby Loo has never had a treat before. I gave her a salmon one of these & she went mental! Thirty minutes later she’s still looking for another one. I thought I would give her one halfway through each day, but I don’t want her to get addicted to these. If I start this now I think she will always want one.

My calico loves her new floor mat & bowl. The bowl is pleasantly heavy. Both from Chewy.com. |

Complained about my Amazon service on Twitter trying to redeem a gift card. Been struggling with customer service all week to no avail. Tweeted once, answered a couple of questions & got my $20.
